Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I'm not sure if they will be a DK3. I mean there aren't any new features. Just better tech.

I'm skeptical that there will be a wide release DK3 as well. Likely will only be sent to their internal teams and select partners. I think the next wide release will be CV1.

I just hope this doesn't become an ongoing thing with Oculus.. I don't want to have to buy a new Rift every year or so. It's bad enough to do it with my phone.
It's *our* fault if we buy at each new iteration.

But I don't see yearly new product as a bad thing in itself, well at least if it's dealt like phones, where even new apps keep being compatible with older hardware.

Well even if my bank account doesn't agree, I'm far too excited about what each new improvement can bring to a new Oculus, to not hope for very frequent new hardware release.
They pretty much said what I thought about what is needed for a good desktop use, a 4k screen is pretty much needed, I hope we will see that in VR by 2018~2019, but that might be too optimistic I guess.

I can pretty much say with almost 100% certainty that this will be the case.. One of the strongest points of VR for PC is yearly iteration where there is a long road between VR good enough (CV1) and VR where it must go to (CV10 ) where you have a VR headset thats super compact with displays that are as highrez as your retina, at 120+ hz and very very low latency where the VR world almost 100% matches reality.

More surprising is that Kor-FX actually shipped. I was pretty shocked, I don't think I've ever seen a hardware kickstarter actually ship, especially only a month after the KS ended. Of course, they openly admitted that the design was final and they just needed to kickstart the production process, but damn.

We're going to implement haptic feedback into HL2VR, because valve actually left haptic feedback stubs in the source.

cool, you're planning to support stem then for half life VR ye? if so, do you know if it'll have like a hydra compatibility mode or if it'll need to be coded for specifically in the mod

Dk2 already obsolete...after 2 months...

What are you even talking about. It's quasi-misinformation like this that starts unnecessary rumours. Prototype vs devkit, please try to understand the difference. The DK2 is just as relevant as a devkit today as it was before the reveal of this prototype, and probably will be for quite a while yet. I would buy a DK3 today if they announced it, but most likely that won't happen (unless OVR deems audio and 360 tracking worthy of starting a complete new logistic cycle of sending out DKs) . So until we know, give it a rest.

Hey y'all, got my kit yesterday and started fooling around with it.

I can't get it to go, though. Everything is connected, the latest firmware is installed, and the blue lights show both camera and headset when I select the second option in the Display mode setting. (On the first one, I see nothing and the headset's light is orange.)

When I try the demo scene, the rendering is incredibly distorted and off-colour and is also horizontally positioned instead of vertically.

Sorry if this is a simple thing to sort...any guidance would be great, thanks!

If you buy a dev kit and bitch about how it is "obsolete" bunch of months later when you know full well they are working towards new prototypes I don't know what to tell you.

I guess You have to change display orientation for your Rift in the video drivers, and go through the Rift calibration after.

I don't have time to comb through it right now but I think I remember there's some useful information at the top of this link here:

I hope it has to do with supporting stuff like Oculus instead of trying to sell their own VR HMD.

Welp, looks like I'm gonna be on a local morning radio show next week demoing the Rift. I'm pretty nervous. I'm only going to have like 15 minutes, so I'm thinking of starting with the desk demo as an introduction, and jumping into the UE4 coaster and Cyberspace. Maybe Ocean Rift as a backup if there's time. What do you guys think? I figure I need to get the biggest wow factor as fast as possible, and something that will play well on the radio.

I have to say, promoting VR via the medium of sound seems like a pretty tough challenge!

Throw in a sucker punch at the end of the demo and say it's a part of the VR experience. That'll make an impact.

Seriously though, you're on the right track. Although the best would be to be able to demo Elite Dangerous and Live for Speed, but that would perhaps be a little tricky.

Thanks for the help.

Things are a little bit better, but not much. A few things I'm struggling with:

- Black borders (square-shaped) border the view in every demo/game I've tried. Plus, I can still see underneath the headset (as in my floor in the real world). I've tweaked the dials all the way in, although haven't changed lenses from the default yet.

- Playing Elite Dangerous is impossible. The text is incredibly blurry and there's loads of colour separation. Basically, I can barely read any of the text, and the frame rate when I manage to get in-game is awful. My PC should run this fine, especially on low.

The viewing angle doesn't seem 100% right either. The logo and trademark text before the menu seem somewhat zoomed in too; and the menus in general seem way too vertical, if you get me.

The best experience I've had so far is the demo and the latest rollercoaster one, but they're still more blurry and jaggy than I'd expect.

Any more guidance would be awesome, thanks!

You could use a cloth or something to cover the ventilation spots if you really want to. It was actually one of the first things I noticed as well when I got my DK2 but I got used to it and actually appreciate it since I can do simple stuff like aligning my fingers on the keyboard without taking the whole headset off by looking underneath it.

Relax dude. Sorry if the truth hurts.
How is that "the truth"? The problem with your post is that it is NOT true, until SDK support is discontinued for the DK2, and the DK2 is no longer available.

Is the DK2 still available for purchase?

Does the latest available version of the SDK still support the DK2?

If a DK3 went on sale, and the SDK stopped supporting DK2 (as happened with the DK2 when DK1 became unsupported, correct?) then one could say the DK2 is obsolete.

I understand the sentiment. I need a dk2 though for a demo im doing, it does burn a little to see the dk3 already looking ready for another round of pre-orders, BUT, at the end of the day the Dk1 is adequate for the demo. the Dk2 will be better, and the future of VR is bright. I can't feel too slighted, because I bought exactly what I thought I needed. Its the wild west of VR development, this is a learning lesson for other VR headset devkit purchases.

It does look more advanced, and it is sure to be an improvement over the Dk2, but I just have to think what my goal is. My goal is to demo this vr project, and have people see the possibilities. It could be done with the Dk1, just as well as the dk2, and now the Dk3 will be the better concept selling point of the DK2's shortcomings as they are now.

I could get bummed out, but when I think about the goal, well.. its not as if the Dk3 is the consumer version at the same price I paid for the dk2. That would be a little irritating..

There is no DK3.

Sean, you understand the point. Whatever the crystal crescent thing is.. I mean, being literally correct about what that new unit is aside, I can understand how you'd be miffed.. But that depends on what you were thinking you were buying with the dev kit to begin with.

Using the Dk2, you can see clear as day that there is still room for improvement. Everything is very much a work in progress. So you can't really be too upset at what you are buying/being a part of.

But, its not absurd to get a feeling of "damn, shoulda waited." If you wanted the best dev kit for the $ you're paying. I'm having investors pay for the kits. Now with this news, I hope they don't jump to the same conclusion, but I can understand where its coming from.

I'm okay if a DK3 does suface, it makes sense if it resembles the consumer one more, but I just hope the DK2 would still be compatible...mine still hasn't shipped yet, got a while to go according to the initial estimate.

Got a glimpse of what it's like to have slightly more immersion with headtracking and now I can't wait to see what it's like when you actually jump into the game.

Is the DK1 still supported with DK2 made VR games? ...Does it vary?

It seems like DK2 is still feature complete in terms of what will be in the consumer version, it's just that CB uses components of higher quality.

I guess there's the integrated audio, but it seems sort of extreme to ship out a new round of devkits just for that. Maybe not, who knows.

Relax dude. Sorry if the truth hurts.

That rhetoric.. What, are you like eight years old?

Have to say, if you buy a devkit just to mess around with and you're still surprised that they become obsolete at some time then you wouldn't be smart enough to be able to get it running in the first place.

Most of those of us that bought DK1s and DK2s would actually love to buy a DK3. But they don't exist, and most likely won't exist unless the CV1 is pushed further ahead, or new tech is implemented. A DK3 will eventually exist, but not in the same format nor context as today.

But, its not absurd to get a feeling of "damn, shoulda waited."

It is not only absurd but also utterly idiotic considering the circumstances and disclaimers that has been put on these since day one. I can't even believe we're discussing it - Especially since there is no DK3 yet

No idea about the black borders (never had that issue) but I hope you remembered to:
A) Dowload the latest software
B) Update the DK2's firmware

As for Elite:Dangerous, to play it right now you first need to "pause service" from withing the Oculus tool.

Here's an interesting take on Oculus from a guy who you've probably all heard of and hate... Glenn Beck!

http://www.glennbeck.com/2014/09/22...y-you-watch-movies-play-video-games-and-more/

He praises it but also has to make us scared of our sci-fi future... I think it's interesting since we are all looking at it from a gamer's standpoint, but he's talking about all the other uses it can have, like seeing and interacting with movies from the perspective of the main character and holding meetings in a virtual space. I don't know if the first consumer version will be quite there yet, but it's exciting to think how far it can possibly go when they introduce body suits that simulate touch and create a full sensory experience.

Eh. I dunno. If somebody who bought a DK2 is actually upset about Oculus showing off a new prototype, I can only conclude that their purchase was made under the wrong impression or unreasonable expectations. Crescent Bay isn't a publically available development kit, nor is there any reason to think that Oculus would be able to do another large manufacturing run of them for $350. They could be entirely supply limited for a while and the parts may cost more than we imagine at the moment. .

I can understand the thinking behind being upset by it, but it doesn't necessarily mean I agree with it or think its reasonable.

I'm definitely not just seeing it as a gaming device. I'm probably equally, if not more, excited about the non-gaming applications that will be possible.

I must say I wasn't reallt thinking about non gaming applications until I got my hand on the DK2. Resolution wass too low et screendoor effect too strong for me to enjoy watching video or use it as a virtual desktop, but it definitly convinced me that once those aspect would be at a decent state ( CV1 for video I hope ) it could become huge and those non gaming aspect.

My Oculus arrived ... at my neighbor. She's not at home now :( Waiting game :(
I got it. Wow! It's a lot better than DK1 but I'm feeling ill too soon. I need me some more practice :D

Hahaha had to share this video, the reactions to DK2 are priceless, and reading about crescent bay being superior in every aspect is awesome, still not any estimate for the CV?

I saw the gif of that earlier today. Ouch! The worst I have seen first-hand is a girl slamming her head into the desk while playing The Matrix VR. The headset protected her face, and fortunately both were OK.

I took my Oculus DK2 to Georgia earlier this month and recorded reactions from six different people playing various demos including Cyber Space, The Matrix VR, Ocean Rift, Proton Pulse, Vanguard V, and Temple of Merk. Tomorrow I am going to Charlotte, NC to film even more people trying it out, in the hopes to eventually put all the footage together into an awesome Oculus reactions compilation.

I haven't been as prudent in trying out every demo for the DK2 that's available as I should have, but I just downloaded a handful and am about to try them out to see if they are good demos to show off or not. Right now I have:

Don't Let Go
Faceted Flight
Laserface
Pixel Rift
SightLine: The Chair
Time Rifters
Windlands
ZVR Apocalypse

Anything else you guys think would be good to show to first-timers? I haven't tried any of these out yet, and a couple of them might not work since I haven't upgraded to 0.4.2 as I'm worried how it may affect older demos tomorrow and I won't have enough time to test it out. I am avoiding things that don't run 100% smoothly, so based on reports, SightLine might be off the list, and I'm not even bothering with Senza Peso right now. I'm just wondering if anyone feels I am missing something particularly awesome. I've had issues with Titans of Space and Radial-G so I am not including those right now.

I just tried Windlands and its by far the best VR game(!) I have played yet. It feels comfortable, looks nice and has good gameplay. Really recommend it to anyone! Right now the official mirror is down but on the Oculus forums there was a mega download posted:
https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=5672&p=196844#p196844

For first timers I have very good experience with OceanRift:
https://share.oculusvr.com/app/ocean-rift

Most people can enjoy it and it is a slow but still non passive entry to VR.

Edit: Titans of Space (and Windlands) only works for me with the rift set in direct mode.

When people are demoing this, do you guys make custom IPD's and such in the profile or stick to one avg?

I ended up spending an hour with Windlands before leaving for Charlotte. It's great! You feel so damn cool when you are pulling off crazy maneuvers and not falling to the ground. I like to believe my experience playing Spider-Man 2 on the Xbox helped me.

I found that using Monitor Capture is the only way to get it to appear on Open Broadcaster Software.

I showed Ocean Rift to a few people yesterday and was surprised how big of a hit it was. It was after showing things like Cyber Space, The Matrix VR, and SightLine: The Chair. The seeming vastness of the ocean is what people seemed to enjoy most. They said they felt like they were in a huge environment that they could freely explore, which is true compared to most demos.

I just stick to the default for everything. I have shown it to 14 people, some who wear glasses that I have them remove, and all have been completely blown away. In fact, my 12th person is the first time I've ever even adjusted the straps. I feel trying to create a custom profile will take away some of the magic of experiencing it for the first time. I have found Cyber Space to be the perfect demo to start people off with. Then I go to The Matrix VR, and then give them any choices they want, while making sure SightLine: The Chair is thrown in there. That seems to be the most popular one, though every demo has been a hit.

I have so much amazing footage. I recorded 5 hours, or 46 gigs, of video yesterday. I am having trouble sleeping at my friend's house right now because I'm so excited about the reaction compilations that will come out of this. Definitely a lot of editing in my future. People's response to this has been more than I ever hoped for.

Only thing wrong with this is there's no Elite Dangerous in there. :p

Sillyfun thing I did with video for the Rift recently. The old PS2 release "Space Venus" had a panoramic Morning Musume video filmed around a central group of cameras. The player could then change which direction they were looking with the analog stick. I found a copy of the footage on YouTube, did a bit of conversion so it was properly in its wiiiiide format, and then played it on the surface of a cylinder in LiveView Rift. Worked pretty well, other than the source material being very low resolution.

I know! The rest of my spending money went to the DK2. I really need to save up to get Elite Dangerous and a controller for it soon.

That's pretty interesting! I'm hoping to see future music videos or concerts filmed like this for VR that allow the player to look around at anytime.

So after three days of awesome VR parties, I have ~86 gigs of video or what I'm estimating to be 9 hours or so. This is one of my favorite shots, as we watched a friend play Ocean Rift for a good 28 minutes. He was terrified of being eaten by a shark the whole time.

nHJBHac.jpg

My favorite reactions have to be from Don't Let Go, though. We used a wrinkled receipt and glided it across the right hand of a couple of players during the spider section. So perfect.

So I recently upgraded to a 970 from my 7870 and now I experience right-eye tearing in SteamVR and Dolphin VR. Any idea how to fix it guys? Rift as primary and prefered display, force vsync on, disable aero didn't help - and for some reason I cannot turn aero back on when my Rift is connected in extended mode.

Hopefully someone can help me with some set up, please?

I moved from GTX 670 sli to 970 sli, and with the upgrade I needed to install new drivers for the cards. This has been a bad move for my DK2 and I'm struggling getting things working.

The old way with my two 670s:-

I turn the Rift on. The computer would recognise the Rift as another display, recall the settings I'd previously used and set the refresh rate to 75hz, while keeping my desktop at 60hz.
All I needed to do to run a demo was open the file, right click the desktop and in the "screen resolution" tab I switched the DK2 to my main monitor and away it went.

In Elite: Dangerous, the game would recognise the DK2 as a second display and let me send the game to this display with all the correct settings and everything would work perfectly.

With my two 970s.

I turn on the Rift and now I get a pop-up telling me I now have two displays connected and need to change my SLI profile. which means first I have to fuck about closing a couple of background services in windows before I continue.
Once done, windows has forgot that the rift is portrait mode and I have to do some eye gymnastics through the DK2 lens to get the screen orientation correct.
When I have the screen set up correctly I discover it now cannot send one screen a 75hz signal while sending another a 60hz signal. If I turn the main screen off I have to return to the start because my SLI profile has changed once more.

Onto Elite: Dangerous. I no longer get the option to send the game to a second display. The option is visible but nothing happens when I click it. Elite also refuses to go to 75hz mode. I have had this game working with the 970s but I think it was a fluke.

Can someone with 344.16 nvidia drivers please point me down the path to get my DK2 working nice again?

TL:DR New Nvidia drivers make my dk2 unusable. Please help before I decide to sell it.

Not sure, but I don't think that Nvidia has released drivers that activate VR support for SLI cards.

It doesn't matter. DK2 is just a display. It's the software that works or doesn't with SLI.

For eg. The River demo (LOTR) is quite choppy with one card, but in SLI it's completely smooth. SLI is sometimes working in the rift, even it's not supported.

My problem isn't to do with that. My problem is that each time I turn on my DK2 I have to start from scratch with my display settings, where with older drivers my settings were saved and I didn't have to. I can't roll back drivers because the new cards aren't supported with the older drivers and it's becoming a chore having to guess at the locations of the click boxes to rotate screens and switch primary displays.
