Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I know i'm late to the party but man, Titans of Space is glorious !

But i've got to make my VR legs cause demo like titans of space it's good but Lava Inc / HL² makes me sick quickly.

My girlfriend just sent me this:

I, uh... Suddenly feel like I'm coming down with something. Might have to go home early.

Dude, even from here I can tell you are sick. Go home and rest....

Also, is there a recommended graphics card to run things to a good standard in the rift? Like a 780 or R9 280 as minimum/recommended?

A lot, and I mean A LOT of performance ends up with being optimization. I have an R9 290 OC and in Beta 1 of Elite, I had "alright" performance, text wasn't readable and a lot of jutter (although I hadn't really messed with settings). After Beta 2 released and the updates, I've gotten better performance and after messing with settings it's amazing.

780 is a great start. It's a solid card, if you can, go for the 970 for 'future' around that price. Tbut 980 is where the big guns come out, along with the big price tags.

Here's a mostly honest solution: go home, try the worst possible demos, get some serious motion sickness: voila, you are now sick. Stay at home!

Mines arrived last night, I only really had about 3 hrs to test stuff out, very surprise I never experienced any VR sickness, I am sure that will come today.

Uk ordered 22nd August.

I'm so jealous of all of you guys... every time I go to gmail and see the "updates" tab has 1 new email I rush to it only to end up being disappointed by some iTunes Store receipt email or some other random shit :(

Aug 4th, US. Seems I missed the cutoff date by only a couple of days. If we start going ring a round the rosie through the geographical markets again, I'm just going to cancel it.

EDIT: It's time to untwist my panties. I just got charged. =)

They are sending stuff to US now so hopefully yours is ready soon.

Man, the way Oculus Rift does their shipping, separating regions... it's so damn weird. When you ordered seems to have little to no effect. Some guy in Germany that preordered on the 25th of August got it last week, some people that preordered it in July (in the US) still waiting.

Living in Japan, I guess I will have to wait until all the NA shipping is done. It better be this month (that's what their website said, they'd ship during October).

Edit: I see you got an update. Congrats!

Thank you, kind sir!

It's hard to get really excited when you don't know when you'll get it, but needless to say I'm thrilled right now! I haven't even so much as seen one with my own eyes, so hopefully I can keep the wonderment up, and the yacking down.

I don't have a rift but my buddy just got his last week and I popped over to try it and holy shit it's pretty amazing...I can't wait to see what the finished version is like. The demos that are made for VR from the ground up are amazing (the roller-coasters and that Titan space one especially) even using the virtual desktop where it makes it seem like your sitting in front of a giant curved screen was pretty awesome, I played some Shadows of Mordor and the new Borderlands and it was pretty fricking cool. Once the final version is out and you don't have to muck about so much to get things working this will be something I definitely pick up!

I wonder if anyone can help me out - I'm trying to run the Tuscany demo and although the app works (i.e. I can see it running on my laptop), there's no signal being received by the Rift itself. The head-tracking works (blue light) and the Rift is receiving power (orange light), and I know the hardware works because I can run the demo scene and view it properly under OculusConfigurationUtility. Has anyone else had this error?

Just for reference, I'm using a non-gaming laptop Dell Inspiron 5520, Intel HD 4000 Graphics (although that shouldn't really matter, I'm not using it for proper gaming at the moment).

It's not really an error, just that hardly anything works in Direct mode, which I believe you're on. Change it to Extend mode and the headset light should be blue all the time (showing your desktop as a second display). Then Tuscany should work.

Really? Huh, I didn't think of that. I thought it would work since the laptop is Windows 8(.1), should've thought of that I guess.

I've got separate issues with using Unity ('No HMD and sensor detected') but I need to experiment more with that before I know what's actually wrong.

Edit: Ok, that's really weird - the Rift can see my desktop as a second display, but it's rotated 90 degrees and when I try to run the Tuscany demo it splits into 2 like you'd normally see it running on your computer.

It's not weird, if you are in extended mode you have to switch landscade to portrait mode in windows ou nvidia whatever screen settings for the rift.

But me too i thought that nothing worked in direct mode but i've managed to launch almosteveything in direct with VR game manager (with force Dx11 option as a reminder you have to add the game_direct to rift.exe).

I ran tuscany on my DK2 in direct mode with the version found here.

I didn't realise that the Rift actually uses mobile screens i.e. they're portrait-oriented.

The Tuscany demo I've downloaded does have the animated fireplace, waves etc albeit it runs at 15fps xD I'll have to figure out how to get it running in Direct mode rather than Extended.

i really have a problem with this and I need your help.

I used to have DK 1 and everything was smooth. now I got DK2 and when I try a demo, it shows the demo on the main screen and the rift screen. I can tilt the rift and it will tilt on the main screen.

its really annoying. how can I let it know that it should show on the rift. if I right click from the desktop and put it to duplicate display, the screen will turn in resolution to something lower than 720p even " some weird ass resolution.

the lights are blue in the dk2.

can someone help ?

just to clrarify something, if I use the oculus configuration utility. if I put the rift display mode to direct HMD, my rift will turn orange and never blue no matter what
this problem accrue when I have in extended desktop to HMD

also, in extended mode. I have to put my screen on landscape flipped. lol.. is this normal ? " and yet it wont work with all the games. some will only be working on the main screen

Did you try with VR games manager (and by forcing the Dx11 mode) ?

Everything is normal. DK2 is janky. Direct works for some people/some demos. Extend mode works for most. My DK2 output is also 'landscape (flipped)'. Sometimes you need to make the Rift the primary display in order to prevent it from displaying on your monitor. Sometimes you need to make the EXE windowed, and physically drag it to the other display and then alt-enter it. Sometimes you have to copy a directtorift.exe from a different demo to use in another folder. Sometimes it will display on the Rift but at the wrong refresh rate and you have to do a combination of these things in order get it to do 75. Hmmm... what else... I think there are other workarounds I've had to use too. The situation is improving, but it really depends on the state of each demo you're trying.

You'll likely get it before Christmas. 2 months seems to be the current waiting time, and I have to imagine there will be less strain on shipments now that most of the summer orders are dispatched.

Cool, that is what the site said, 6-8 weeks so hopefully that is the case. Orders might pick up again for christmas though and ruin everything. :D

I have an R9 280, and it runs most of the demo's (which are relatively undemanding unity demo's) fine at 75fps. For AAA games like Alien and Elite, you might want something a bit beefier if you want higher graphical settings (I haven't tried either yet so I can't say for sure) and for future proofing. Go for a 970 or 980 if you can afford it.

Awesome, that is all along the lines of what I am hoping to get. So depending on when this is shipped I will hopefully have more money to throw down on a card. If it ships before end of November I might have to go with an R80, but that seems very unlikely. If it gets shipped after I should be able to afford an 970, I would be going for the more expensive MSI card if the case as it has a higher out of box clock and quieter apparently. Should realistically be able to get a 970 then, yay! :) Prices might even drop by then.

It's actually a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 screen.

Haha, that is brilliant with the samsung logo still on there. So the question is, has anyone modded a Rift with a better screen with higher resolutions/frequency?

It's not a stock, unmodified screen. Carmack outlined the problems if someone wants to drop, say, a note 4 screen into a DK2.

Time Rifters runs fantastic on the Oculus Rift. No screen tearing, no jitters, and a consistent high FPS count resulting in a wonderful motion sick free experience. The graphics really come alive when looking through the Rift and the art style is well suited for a VR experience.
Since the launch of the Oculus Rift most of the available "games" fall into one of three categories. They are either a small snippet of a demo like Dread Halls, a shallow novelty experience like Riftcoaster, or a previously made game with Rift support shoe horned in.
It's the first game for the Rift that I want to play more than 30 minutes of.

Not yet, I'll try that next.

DK2 does seem a little janky if it's got so many workarounds to a common problem.

Tried it with the VR Game Manager by Bilago, I can run the Tuscany demo in Direct mode now. It's very handy, thanks for the tip.

Now for a long-shot - has anyone who's developing a game for the Rift managed to get a demo/scene/anything running in Unity Standard (4.5+) instead of Unity Pro?

So Thursday is delivery day for me.

Any must-have accoutrements? I just placed an order for lens protectors. Any common hardware mods for headset comfort?

I've got non-Rift specific peripherals and games. I need to start collecting demos and such however. I need to brush up on the potential hoops I'll need to jump through too. I think I've seen some beginner's guides with software lists and such. Can anybody point me in the right direction for those?

So, you guys know how we were saying get a HOTaS for Elite? Well, get your wallets out!! Get a wheel for AC and LFS!!

My gaming chair looks absolutely ridiculous now. Ikea Poang with mounted X55 and a Fanatec GT2 on a Wheelstand Pro that I can move in front of it ... I'm lucky I have a fiance' already because even I can barely keep a straight face looking at my setup.

Honestly, it depends on the game. Extended vs Direct, Primary vs Secondary ... your best bet is to check the Oculus subreddit and do a search for the game/demo you're working with. It gets to the point you have to change your setup for each particular one. I don't even know if the -force-d3d11 trick works for most things or they patched that in. Check specific gaming forums, Elite's forum has a great thread of DK2 as well the Assetto Corsa subreddit (and the Oculus reddit).

My best experiences, in the order I would rank them, and not 'when' I tried them:

Elite Dangerous
Assetto Corsa
Senzo Pesa (sp)
Ocean Rift
ChillingSpace
World of Diving (though still a bit buggy)
My Neighbor Tottoro/Spirited Away
EuroTruck 2 (it's pretty good, but not that fun)
Half Life 2 (awesome at first, but I couldn't play like that, got sick)

Those are off the top of my head but there has been quite a few NEW demos out that I honestly haven't tried because I've been looking for more 'games'.

And I also ordered these a while back: Still no shipping update but they said Oct 22nd so I'll have to wait: http://vrcover.com/

I ordered those because I still get some fogging due to my big ole' head just causing heat inside the low air flow goggles. But a fan on me fixes it pretty well, hoping those allow for a little more air flow and absorb a little more of the minor sweat that sometimes happens. Like wearing snowboarding goggles.

EDIT: Oh, take the lens cloth that comes with it (if they haven't replaced it) and don't use it, just get one from a glasses place or something. Wrap it up and put it around the cord at the back of the head and then take that elastic thing and stretch it around that, it will keep the cord from sliding up and down at the back of the headset which will take pressure off the connectors.

See how the cord goes through the back? There is a little elastic loop it goes through and if you wrap the cord with the cloth, then pull the elastic around it keeps the cord from pulling on the front. If you look in pictures, you almost always see the cord being pulled tight across their head, it shouldn't be like that and the connectors take that pressure.

A big thank you for taking the time to write that up. I really do appreciate it.

So everything is game specific more or less. OK, chasing down info shouldn't be too tough. I should probably start a spreadsheet to keep track of it all.

I thought perhaps the best demos list was a bit more fluid, so it's good to know some of them have stood the test of time. The race sims, ETS2, Elite, Alien, HL2, etc. that's all in my wheelhouse. Covered.

Cool looking covers. 20 bucks, sure why not.

Fan, yeah that's something I should pick up. I know people have experimented with usb ones plugged into the headset, but my general sense from impressions was that it really wasn't that great. Would a small desk mounted one be better?

Great tip about the lens cloth. I wear glasses so I've got plenty of better ones. Speaking of which, I'm nearsighted, but not blind as a bat. I'm hopeful that one of the two lenses will be enough to cover me. Glasses wearers, should I be worried?

One last question - the camera mount.

I've got a relatively shallow desk at two feet deep (add, say, +1 foot to my face). Behind that, a wall. Should I be looking at mounting the camera on the wall straight away? I've got monitors on vesa arms, but if mounted on one of those that's an additional three or four inches closer, even when pushed back as far as they will go. I can pull the desk away from the wall, but I've got to be sitting at the desk for wheel and hotas use. Would that be better?

Anyone got any advice on the best practice to have the monitor show what's on the Rift? Worked great in direct mode, but on extended mode, giving someone a demo requires a a lot of asking them to describe what they see.

My desk is about 3 feet deep, the camera is on the wall, about a foot above the height of my monitor, angled down a bit. I had it on top of my monitor initially but it was a bit close, and then I realised that any strong FFB wheel movement shook the camera and mucked up the tracking. So I'd recommend taping it to the wall, and you may want to move a bit further back in order to stay in the camera bounds, particularly when you have the urge to lean about the cockpits like you've never seen a car before. :) The desk demo scene has a 'show camera bounds' toggle that is useful. It's worth spending some time with that - it seems to be the least demanding and most reliable demo to show how smoothly DK2 should be performing everywhere. Setting a deliberately incorrect IPD is a good idea just to see the differences too.

You can run OBS, a free capture software. You can set it to 'preview' so that the DK2 feed shows on your monitor, without recording anything. It hurts performance though, so I wouldn't recommend running it all the time unless you have a powerful machine with a big framerate overhead.

Perfect. Exactly what I looking for. I probably would have started with it on the monitor, so you saved me from wasting my time.

Thanks, and oh yeah, I'll absolutely be turning the fan on high, and doing the doggie sim :)

3' is fine really, it can be pointed way down. In the desk demo you can turn on the grid to see where you'll be. I forgot I had a bunch of camera equipment from my macro addiction and found an arm and such. Kind of depends on what you're running. For example Assetto Corsa will 'recenter' but it stays straight. Like you have to have your camera pointed at you directly. In Elite Dangerous I can hit recenter and it just points 'straight' wherever your head is pointing. So the camera can be off to the left and I'll be straight in my chair.

As for glasses, I have prescription glasses but with the A lenses I don't wear them. I think I'm -1.5/-1.25. But glasses will fit, it's just annoying as shit (at least I found them to be) because you WILL be constantly taking the thing off and on until you start 'knowing' how stuff will launch and setup.

And just use a small desk fan. My upstairs TV room is a bit 'stuffy' without the AC since it's closing on winter so it's a little worse in the summer with the fogging but a desk fan would be perfect. Don't mount something on the Rift, I thought about it, but it's already awkward and it wouldn't help as much as something blowing on your face to dry the minor sweat on everything. Plus, convertible racing! EXTRA IMMERSION!

Seriously, I know you're a huge race fan and you're in for a damned treat. Just take it slow and don't jump straight into flying, racing, rollercoaster shit or you may get a bit nauseous and your body will associate the Rift with it and you'll have to acclimate. Start off with the Chair, Spirited Away, Titans of Space and just give yourself time. I wish I did ... I'm back to being able to enjoy it but I jumped straight in and it's like getting drunk on Tequila ... you can do it again, but it won't be the next day.

I'm so fucking excited to have finally ordered this....now the wait...This holiday season should be fun :)

Remember to have a look at this:

Oculus VR might not be incompetent when it comes to making hardware, but when it comes to shipping stuff and releasing information regarding it, they are at the same level as a bunch of 13 year-old kids sending stuff to people online for their first time. No specific order, no info at all, they keep skipping people like crazy, if there's some issue with your credit card they won't notify and just leave you waiting, etc...

On the boards there is now this guy that ordered in May and he's still waiting. Some people living in the same are as others that ordered days or weeks earlier still waiting, etc...

So yeah, make sure your credit card stuff is all correct at all times and then pay attention to what area they are sending and if they skip you, notify the mod over there and hope he doesn't ignore your post.
