Official Advance Wars: Dual Strike topic!

GDJustin

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
First off, a bit of a shameless plug- I used to run an AW fansite, but I gave it to my staff almost two years ago. With the impending release of AWDS I decided to become a little more hands on during my freetime, because I love the AW community and how incredibly hardcore it is. So anyway. http://www.advancewarsnet.com has full artwork for all the AWDS COs, the complete AWDS soundtrack, and the staffers are cooking up some other cool stuff for the next month or so. Anyway, onto the official thread...

~~~
We had a Famicom Wars topic, but the game is in English now, bitches. It also rules hard. I don't have a lot to say because my review copy just came in the mail today, but I have some general thoughts:
-For hardcore AW vets, the game takes a long time to ramp up, difficulty-wise. I have perfectly S-ranked (300 points) the first 8 campaign maps without even really trying. I made mistakes on some of them and still got a 300 pt S-rank. I'm not saying the game is EASY by any means, b/c I'm very, very into AW. I'm just saying...
-This game is the biggest leap in terms of added content of any single AW game yet. At least of the ones released in the US, and possibly of the entire series. Combat mode, in my opinion, is more of a gimicky addition than anything. Still, at least it's something genuinely new to the series for the first time, and I enjoyed my first go-round. It's also an EXCELLENT way to earn coins.
-The game includes a Smash Bros.-esque stats page that tracks ALL KINDS of shit including total turns taken, totals built and destroyed for every individual unit type, etc. It'll be interesting to look at once I've put 100 hours into the game.
-The new COs are a mixed bag so far, but like Combat mode, I can't fault Int Sys for the effort. There's only so many good ideas for COs. Jake's CO specialty is kind of a "WTF." His units are extra powerful on plains? Blah. That said, I'm LOVING all the new CO music mixes. Sonja's is probably my favorite of the moment, but I honestly like all of them.
- I haven't had the touch input problems some other people have reported. I haven't found the menus to be too small. Besides, the old D-Pad input works just as perfectly as it did on the GBA with no drawbacks, so there's no complaints there.
I put an INCREDIBLE amount of time into AW1, but I didn't feel like AW2 was a sequel as much as a cash-in, and I'm not even sure if I beat the game's campaign or not. With AWDS I can already tell that I'm re-hooked as all shit. So as a huge AW fan I'm probably more critical of the game than any of you will be, and I can safely say that at first glance the game seems to be 5 shades of awesome.
I'll definitely be buying Advance Wars: Dual-Strike, and Nintendogs this coming week. My DS will be getting quite a bit of attention from me in the weeks to follow.
I love the sounds and music now. There is just so much more oomph to everything. The tanks and artillery units sound so awesome when they fire.
Plus there is a shit load of little scaling, and 3d effects that keep the look more interesting than the previous titles.
I almost imported the Japanese one.. but I'm glad I waited. Fry's having some crazy discount on launch day (and for Nintendogs) would be icing on the cake.
pre-ordered 3 lol
1 of them is for my friend's wedding gift (I know.. I'm cheap lol)... but he's an online friend I think it would be nice hehe
I don't really like the music remixes (I listened to them on your site), save for Hawke and Flak
Some of the characters' music sounds exactly the same (Max), and some are marginally improved thanks to the DS' increased synthesizing ability (Kanbei and Grit).
Overall, though, I preferred the more primitive sounding music of the GBA AW games.
And may I ask WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH SASHA'S THEME?
I'll give you that, but that's part of why I like it so much. In a match with 3 tagged allied COs switching between two tagging black hole COs, you hear a lot of similar music, but then Sasha's turn comes around and it's just "ahhh..."
I dunno, I've always like the more unusual music tracks in the series. Kanbei's never fit very well either and I always love it as well.
Holy SHIT. OMG
On the title screen it used to say "Medals Collected: 0/300." I didn't pay much attention to it. When it flipped over to 1/300 I started looking around the menu.
It turns out the more lifetime AWDS milestones you reach, the more medals you earn! Remember how I mentioned in my first post that the game tracks fucking EVERY stat, including time played, how many of each unit you've built, merged, destroyed, sent to the top screen. How many steps you've taken, damage dealt, damage recieved, CO powers used, etc. It tracks ALL of it.
So anyway, once you reach a certain level, you can earn bronze, silver, and gold medals for EACH stat tracked. I guess there's 100 things being tracked, eh?
My timer says I've played for 4 hours and 33 minutes, and I've only earned two of the 300 so far. Funds spent (for spending 500,000 G) and damage inflicted (for inflicting 500,000 worth of damage).
It's gonna take AW nuts a loooooong time to earn all 300. There's entire catagories that after 4 and a half hours of play are still sitting at ZERO on my copy (I still haven't built any cruisers and some other units, etc).
Grit has my favorite music. I'm seriously fiending for this game. I have a shitty job and no money so I'm selling mad shit on ebay to get ready for PAX and AWDS. sigh.
oh man....finally a timer in Advance Wars. Now I can see how many crazy hours I actually put into the game. I can only imagine how many hours I sank into Advance Wars 1 and 2 over that past 4 years (or however long its been).
I cant wait for AWDS, damnit only a couple more days....
oh this is going to be a murderous wait. I dont have a permanent address in europe to import to for a few more weeks. faaark. so looking forward to this. this in 1 slot. one of the various mario games in the other (Im on a mario platformer binge) perfect match of indepth and quick games.
No work address? I get all my games delivered to work these days, especially handheld. :)
BUY THIS GAME NOW! Im over 55 hours into the game and it feels like I just got started (hard mode). IF you even slighly, teeny, tiny bit like this game series or even the concept of a turn based RTS...
buy the fucking game already!!
hold on a sec....Gamespot says this game has WI-FI support?!! wtf, can anyone confirm this?
I can confirm that using the same phrase for local wifi and internet wifi was a really stupid decision, yes.
Damn it, I'm going to have to buy a DS just for this game. (I bought a GBA SP just for AW1, and honestly, I wouldn't have complained if the cartridge had been permanently soldered into the thing.)
Please anyone can try if changing the language on NDS "dashboard" the game has an "hidden" switch to change the language in the game?
I'd like to import the game a month before euro release, but I'd like to know if the US game is multilanguage.
Thank you.
As a HUGE Advance Wars fan, but not totally in love with AW2, I can safely say this game is EVERYTHING I could have hoped it would be. Everything is polished and just ass kicking. I love the dynamics of the new interface and the new music, the new characters are very cool and everything is just polished like crazy. I can see playing this game until all 300 medals are collected, this is exactly what I have been waiting for and the entire reason I bought a DS. Its simply a joy to play, one of the most complete polished games I have played in recent memory. Thank you Nintendo!!
How is the map maker? Someone needs to come up with a way to save them this time so we can actually swap them online, etc.
My anticipation for this title is incredible. I bought a few imports that will arrive the same day. Next week is all about the DS!
Hey Jake :)
Even for hardened AW players, the CPU still kicks some ass when the COs start tagging. It takes a while to work out new strategies. As for the medals you can get... even after beating the main campaign, I only have about 20 or so, and a big Bronze medal in total. It's gonna take a hell of a long time to fill up everything,
Oh yeah. the end song is the track of the year for NDS! Something I actually booted up and gave to the girlfriend to listen to with earphones
Just got a friend to watch the video review(GameSpot), and I just finished placing an order for a DS AND AWDS for him :D
he was wating for CV and MK.. but he said "hell this game is so coooool" lol...
so far I placed orders for FOUR copies of AWDS :D :D
isnt that for EMU's only?
Nah, the AW community is incredibly hardcore (as I think I may have mentioned before) ;)
People have made AW1 and AW2 map editors that allow you to easily create and save maps as their own file format. The link above is just sorta the hub of where the most/best of them are made and shared. The map editors can be found here:
http://www.advancewarsnet.com/designmaps/editor.php
You should give it a DL. It's true you can't just load the maps into your GBA/DS, but it takes less time to recreate a map than you'd guess, if you come across one that's especially cool that you decide you wanna play.
nice...
but I think the DS will make it very easy to create maps, the only thing we need is how to ditribute it, which will be easy (I guess) with the WiFi
Yeah, there is a Wifi map share feature.
what? ok...how can this be saved someplace, transferred online, etc. I agree your site is awesome for having a map builder, but a quicker way of accomplishing this on the DS would be the greatest thing ever.
Not online Wifi. Goddamn Nintendo for their local/global wifi naming shit.
Basically, maps you've made can be tranferred wirelessly between DS units, if you're both in the same place. You can still only have three custom maps on your cart though :(
This must be hacked. They are stupid. Those are two points I'd like to stress.
Doesn't Polarium generate some sort of unique code for puzzles, etc? Why couldn't it be something like that?
