Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Dear Nintendo,

I would like my points back. They have been sitting on your server doing nothing for a long time. I assume you are making interest on my money. I would like my points refunded so that I can make interest on my money. I will buy them again when you start releasing shit in North America that I want.

I get myself excited to see what new VC games come out every Monday only to be dissapointed......most of the time. Samurai Shodown was a nice change of pace even thought it was the only VC game last Monday.

Anyone want to take a stab at how many games we will get on Monday (VC and WiiWare).

I say 1 WiiWare and 2 (would like to see 3) VC games.

Good points. Though Jeremy might have had that countered when he said that in cases of series with numerous entries such as this, they would only give the thumbs up to the most essential entries, leaving the rest for series fans/completionists.
 
jarrod, just think of Retro Roundup as a service on two fronts. For less experienced gamers, it's a general guideline to finding the best retro-gaming value. For more hardcore gamers, we're providing something to go on message boards and be angry about.

I do. This whole idea of non-global releases makes next to nil sense to me when we're talking about digitally-distributed games which don't need new translations, and that applies to all three major regions. America shouldn't still be waiting for Final Soldier and Star Parodier when Europe and Japan have them; Europe shouldn't still be waiting for DoReMi Fantasy when America and Japan have that and they're clearly not doing any translation work aside from the credits; Japan itself needed to wait five months and eight months respectively before getting Bubble Bobble and Lords of Thunder, to name two examples. It's an unwieldy and insensible release schedule.



Edit: Prediction time. Since Nintendo's decided to put up Gyrostarr on Monday, which will either be the day I get Etrian Odyssey II or two days after I get it, I'll infer that they've specifically decided to release games I want at exactly the time when I also have something else to play. Therefore, along with Gyrostarr, clearly Monday will bring Adventures of Lolo 3 and one game out of Shining Force II, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, and Ys Book I & II. Yep. Between shooting, puzzle-solving, and number-crunching, clearly Monday will be one to remember and offer something for almost everybody.
 
Man I remember how hated SMRPG is around here, and now everyone can't wait to play it :D.

It was a fun little title - my first gateway into the RPG genre, and for whom I expect the game is aimed for - children/casuals who got gave the RPG genre a try with Mario named attached to the title.

Mallow, Geno, Booster, Valentina, Johnathan Jones...some pretty good memorable characters there too - shame Square/Nintendo went sour after that I would have really like to see some of those characters back in the Mario franchise
 
Well, I don't think Super Mario RPG is fantastic or anything--in fact, I sold it off probably six or seven years ago and have never regretted it. But it's good enough, and now that it can be had with save states and easier accessibility than hooking up my SNES I'd definitely say it hits "worthy of costing $8-9" territory pretty easily. There are many more games I'd prefer, though.
 
I just got a HDTV and all the super mario bros games (1, 2, lost levels) no longer work.... WTF , I want my money back..

Anyone else have these issues?

Are you EU or US? If EU, go to the home menu to one of those games, plug a nunchuk in and press Z + A + 2. That activates a mode that allows VC games to work on TVs that won't accept a 576i image via component.
 
I agree with Jiggy. There's simply no reason, outside of Nintendo's own bizarre sense of logic, for the different regions to have such different schedules. Okay, I can understand games that never recieved an English translation staying exclusively in Japan. And personally, I'd rather not see Cho Aniki in North America - that game creeps me out. But seriously, there's simply no good reason for Mega Man to be out in Europe but not North America. Or for Europe to not have a game that North America has. Digital distribution doesn't have the issues that retail games can have when it comes to release schedules.

I don't even see what Nintendo has to gain by giving Europe Vectorman or the first two entires in the Mega Man series but not North America. I honestly don't get it. Perhaps someone more insightful than myself could think of a reason, but I'm drawing a blank.

Yes, I certainly like Super Mario RPG, and I'd definitely buy it on VC, but it's not a phenomenal game. Still, it's the kind of game that definitely offers a lot of good gameplay for eight dollars and it would be an excellent ray of light in a austere VC release schedule. Besides, it would be the first VC game I've bought since....River City Ransom and Mega Turrican, I think. And that was two freaking months ago.

You're dealing with a lot of different companies in different regions in an ad-hoc way though. Not all the same publishers hold the rights to games in all regions, this can be a problem. PAL/NTSC format issues might arise. Local ratings boards rate differently and at different speeds. There may be legal barriers for some games in some areas.

You also have Wii/Wiiware/VC correlation issues. Disc games and Wiiware games also need to be taken into account to maximize sales. VC isn't inside a vacuum.

When the above things scramble the lineup then more stable things like Nintendo's own VC lineup can get mixed up too to compensate.

In general it's rarely an issue, a couple weeks and everything evens up again and the ones that don't usually have bigger problems to overcome.
 
Yes, in the case of games with strange ownership issues it's justified not to simultaneously release in every region. I just don't think that's usually the case. Mega Man, Mega Man 2, Vectorman, Final Soldier, Star Parodier, Bubble Bobble, Lords of Thunder, DoReMi Fantasy... I don't think games such as these and more are in any kind of dispute, though I could be wrong.

As for different speeds for different ratings boards, yes, that makes some sense. I don't know if it explains away months of difference, but it would cover some of the situations with two or three weeks between releases in different regions.

I take a look here from time to time and if there's a cool update i connect my Wii online. That's all, i don't care for anything else anymore. I just hope they won't give up the service even if it's quite shitty.
 
I'm really disappointed/upset at the situation because I have a good amount of Wii points stockpiled and sitting there, but there hasn't been anything worthwhile lately to spend them on, when right now I could put that cash towards gas :lol
 
This thread is getting way too dramatic.

I still check this thread on Mondays. Lately there hasn't been much to get excited about, but I haven't "given up" on VC by any stretch.

I'm basically in the same situation with EB taking all precedence, but I'll buy SMRPG, Yoshis Island, some N64 games, etc. There just hasn't been much out there that I want :/

Question for those in Europe who have Star Parodier, was there any Devil's Crush style editing done to the game? I used to own it and later in the game you fight a *mini spoiler*..................."Devil Bomberman" boss which IIRC was floating over a pentagram.

Not only is Mario Kart Wii sold out in my city (despite the Sunday ads portraying they'd be restocked), but there were NO cashiers at my local Circuit City when I had a damn Wii Points card in my hand and an unused $10 Gift Card in the other.

What would have led to the purchase of Pokemon Puzzle League, Gyrostarr, and Adventures of Lolo only led to me frustratingly putting the Points Card back and driving home, as I was hungry and the mother had been cooking. :/

Now that I think about it, I should pick up two cards next time. Phantasy Star IV, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound are BOUND to hit within the next month... right?

If it's bad or hasn't stood the test of time, don't recommend it.

Seems simple enough.

If every game in a series is good, why give any of them a thumbs down? Good is good. Period.

PS IV is almost a lock for this week or next in the States anyways based on the difference between the JPN and US launches of PS II and III.

Believe it or not, Nintendo's treatment of VC is probably only the eighth or ninth or so most-baffling aspect of the game industry this gen; if I come across as complaining a lot and/or criticizing too harshly, that's probably because this is one of the few subjects that annoys me enough that I want to talk about it, but not to such a degree that I want to avoid the problem because it's so severe that I don't even want to think about it.

I have a Japanese Wii too (won it at a Brawl tourney) yet the combination of poor Japanese reading ability combined with me being too damn cheap to get points for my domestic system most of time, let alone a foreign system have kept me from doing any VC on it.

It's basically just my import anime fighter box.

Somnid - Didn't you say a month ago that we would have all or almost all of the European Hanabi Fesitval titles by now? By my count, we've received none. While I wish you were the one in charge of the North American VC release schedule, I think I have to politely ask you to be more careful in your prognostications since you may be jinxing us. :P

I'm not a big fan of Super Mario RPG. I was underwhelmed when I originally played it, and my conclusion at the time was that it was Square's worst SNES offering (that I had played). It probably didn't help that I held a grudge against the game either - I partially blamed it for the cancellation of Secret of Mana 2.

I replayed SMRPG last year though, and it sorta grew on me like fungus. Nice music. Charming, at times. Battle system still didn't win me over, although you can see the roots for the superior Paper Mario. It's certainly worth of the cost of a VC download if you haven't played it before, but I'll be curious to see first-timers' impressions when they finally do get the chance to get their mitts on it. I'm not sure it will be wholly positive.

I think we're seeing a definite pattern emerge in both North America and Europe. For North America, it seems like they're intent on releasing three games a week, alternating weeks between one WiiWare title & two VC titles and two WiiWare titles & one VC title. They might start leaning more heavily on the former if they run low on WiiWare titles, but I'm starting to doubt we'll see very many weeks where the total number of games between the two services are higher than three.

For Europe, they seem to have decided to alternate weeks between WiiWare (1 -2 games) & the VC (3 - 6 games). If NoE keeps releasing a large number of VC titles on the VC week though, Europe is going to end up with the better bargain.
