Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

That's great to hear about EWJ and its sequel, and less so (IMO) for Boogerman and Clayfighter, although I find it interesting that they'd be the Genesis versions, when all of the other multiplatform games so far (primarily the Street Fighter series) have been the SNES versions.

Now, where's Claymates? That was an interesting platformer.

Wait, Genesis versions? Why? The SNES versions of all four were most definitely better...

EWJ1's best console release was the Sega CD version, though. One more level and password save.

Something else I really, really liked about SF1 and SF2--- talking to all of your party members as they stand around your headquarters. Everybody says something different, and it changes pretty regularly as you pass various points in the story. While... half the characters in each are entirely skippable, and even more just aren't really relevant to the story, it's still a decent way to add characterization.

When are we getting Chrono Trigger?

...Terranigma?

...Earthbound, even?
Chrono Trigger never, because Square-Enix knows they could re-release it on DS for $40 and sell two million copies.
For the other two, hopefully one day. If we're lucky, Square-Enix views Terranigma on par with something like ActRaiser that they wouldn't bother to remake on a different system. And Earthbound is Nintendo first-party; presumably they'll get to it sooner or later.

Hmm my post was about double that I think.

I guess it's for the best.

If the giant post was an effort to claim PS3 isn't a bad game it's best for everyone.

Man I wish we could get a rerelease of SF III

A rerelease plus a professionally done translation of parts 2 and 3 would be awesome but probably only slightly more likely than a Panzer Dragoon Saga rerelease.

What are the differences between Genesis Earthworm Jim and SNES Earthworm Jim?

The fact that it's Genesis makes me sad. I really don't want to buy another horrible PAL conversion with massive borders and 20% slowdown.

Are you kidding?
I basically outlined everything that happens in the game along with what's wrong with it to dissuade people from buying it.

And yet...it wasn't to be.

In that case I support continued efforts on getting this information posted. To help you begin again, here is one of my favorite lines of dialog from the game. Notice the rich characterization and elegant prose:

WREN "I'm a Wren-type cyborg, programmed to serve you. I'm a technical systems and combat specialist." Wren joins your party.

The Genesis version of Earthworm Jim was superior in almost every way.

The Genesis version was faster and the controls were more fluid. Also, the SNES had stranger(but lamer) sound effects in certain areas.

The biggest flaw I have with the SNES version is the animation. For whatever reason, just about everything in that version of the game is lacking in animation frames. Some things don't even have any animation at all!(like the floating snot platforms in the last level. In the Genesis version they're dripping and moving, whereas in the SNES version they're just stagnant.)

Of course, the Genesis version also had the additional level 'Intestinal Distress'.

Most of the reasons why the Genny version was better was because EWJ was developed specifically for that platform. The SNES ver. was ported from that version.

If there is one good thing the Super Nintendo version had over the Genesis is that it had some nice effects scattered throughout the game, such as the little lens glare effect from the sun near the beginning of the game. It also had a brighter(and more varied) color palette(though, personaly, I think the 'grittier' colors of the Genesis version suit it better).

i just beat grimm reaper in castlevania nes. i'm ready to die now

I know how you feel, my friend. The bosses in the first Castlevania are nightmarish. I had enough trouble with The Creature and Igor (
I almost typed "IGA" there
) but Death just brought the pain to an entirely new level.

Beating those jerks was really satisfying, though. :D

I felt compelled. Bought 1000 Wii points. Was going to gift David Dayton SMB3, but he already had it. (No surprise)
So I got myself Kirby 64.

He was always a pain in the ass... always will be, and every other 'reaper in the 'vania series has paled in comparison. Have fun with the next level and boss... it's a test, that's for sure.

so, any news on zombies ate my neighbors yet?

you guys do realize this is the only game i truly want.

It was removed from the ESRB site a while ago. It could be the result of some ownership dispute between Konami and Lucasarts, who knows?

I really want Zombies too, but it's looking unlikely at this time. :(

it took me at least five tries. hearing bettenhausen tell that story over and over about hearing the kids talk about how they "couldn't beat grimm reaper" on his church playground inspired me to finally get around to beating it :lol

i have to say, that dude has some the most charming stories about nes games i've ever heard.

Oh daaaamn, Alex Kidd! That shit was built into our Master System 2s in NZ... everyone knows and loves that game here! :lol

I remember being all surprised when I realized it was actually released as a cart in other places in the world.

Dracula X is gonna be so hot, when Turbo CD thingy was announced as being supported that was really one of the dream titles.

<3 VC.

Shining Force III is fantastic, but good luck seeing that one on here.
Yeah... we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves considering we still don't even have SF2 up. :lol

SF3 is notoriously hard to emulate though iirc, partly because Camelot used the Saturn's monster sound chip to help draw it's "curved quads" backgrounds. Even if we get Saturn games on VC eventually, I think SF3 may just be too much for the system. Wisdom and Holy Ark shouldn't be much problem though.

You can still gift me stuff.

Honest.

Might I suggest Super Mario Bros. 2?

Hi guys!

I have an NTSC-U Wii console. Is there anyway I can download Dracula X onto my Wii? Or do I need a Japanese Wii console?

Modchip or anything that can enable me to PURCHASE it?

Just wondering. Thanks to anyone that answers...

My biggest problem with the game was a bit different: There was a door missing that led to the final boss of the game. Like ... a door. An opening by which you move from one room to another, and it was just mysteriously fucking missing from my copy of the game. Called Sega's customer service back in the day and they were like, "Yeah, there were about 1,000 copies produced that didn't have that door. Tough luck, huh?"

To this day, I still count it as a game I've beaten. Seriously. No boss is tough enough to beat that damn team; they were like an assortment of gods out to rip off faces and shit in throats.

EU VC update:

-Double Dragon (NES)
-The Last Ninja (C64)
-World Games (C64)

I figured as much. Looks like at least for right now the European schedual includes 2 C64 games every 2 weeks. I think this is also more definative proof that 3rd party publishers are responsable for the recent decline in VC games. With D4 and Hudson not releasing games, and Sega cutting back the output has been scaled back.

Even if that were true, it would be one link in a causal chain. The only reason they would cut back is if they weren't seeing sufficient returns (or were just dumb, but I'd prefer not to lean toward that way of thinking), which once again raises that question of how to give VC more visibility.

Hudson released DoReMi Fantasy and Sega was getting VC emulation for another system working, but I do agree that D4 truly doesn't have an excuse. :/

So does anyone who's more obsessed than I am know when they put VC games up on the Japan servers? I gots to get all up on that Dracula X.

I Beleive they put new vc games on the jp servers at Midnight CST.

Because WiiWare was launched the same day as a vc week in Japan and WiiWare came out at 12AM CST. I knew this because I stayed up for it. Im pretty sure all other weeks should be the same.

Oh and before I forget: Will this thread be renamed to "Utimate VC & WiiWare" Thread? Since new WiiWare games and VC games in NA will be released at the same time I just figured...

There'll probably be a lot of people who I doubt would want to sift through all the VC news and would instead only want to see the WiiWare stuff. For example, groups such as these:

-The "lol I can't believe you guys pay for rom dumps" crowd.
-Those who are heavily opposed to deleting games to clear up space and will be very picky about which digitally-distributed titles they'll buy.
-People only wanting to pay for original titles.
-Gamers who still own or once owned working copies of every system they care about that's supported on VC.
-Younger gamers who don't identify with games that came from a period of time before the one they grew up in. (Not all of them are like this. I'm saying that the ones who are may not care about VC.)

Personally, I'm hoping there'll be separate threads for WiiWare and VC, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they ended up being combined.

I agree with Jiggy, I think the VC and WiiWare threads should be separate. I think there's a significant enough difference between the audiences of each respective thread that they're best as different threads. Plus, it's just a lot easier to find news for each respective service without having to sift through the posts of one single mega-thread.

In fairness, probably the greatest reason I'm hoping they aren't benefit from having them combined would be that with separate threads people would have twice as many outlets to complain about staggered releases and the lack of a hard drive on a weekly basis.

Edit: Wait, I forgot to include the serious part of my reply. I had originally said I was both hoping and expecting that VC and WiiWare would be separate threads, but stealth edited that out. XBLA doesn't have separate threads, as far as I know--but with that said, it also has far fewer classic games available than VC. It could go either way, but I'd prefer the separate route.
