Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

This is the month of May. Will Shining Force 2 come out this month? Or will I be left again. :lol Oh, Nintendo, you really are the master of making me wait on things. You dangle them out there at me and them hurl them through time to some unforeseeable future.

:lol Oh well, least I'm broke, so it's not like I could have picked it up anyway.

Now it actually is a competition to see who gets our game first! :D

Hey, either way we win.
Earthbound fans never win.

Since Mother was ESRB'd how long do you guys think Nintendo will sit on it before it's released?

jsnake was banned? I know the guy made some inappropriate posts in the past and annoyed me at times, but who's our source for early press releases now? Oh, and why was he banned if I may asked.

I'm guessing it's cause he kept making up stories to attention whore ("I came blood!", "Girlfriend wants to dump me cause I'm not christian" shit).. maybe I'm wrong though.

ESRB games may sit for a long time and it's actually exceeding rare to see a Nintendo game appear there (they are usually a lot stricter about rated games being announced to the public). Normally, these things will release within the month or fall into oblivion never to be heard from again (ie no time indicator).

Anyway it would seem that the regional releases are falling out of alignment, PPL was out of left field, especially when they could have released Tetris Attack.

He wasn't making those up.

It's apparently because he posted a pic making fun of wife/girlfriend beating in an OT thread.

They might have to pay the Tetris Company royalties for the Tetris Attack name to put it up.

Well, they could release one of their iterations of the game I assume. Pokemon Puzzle League would be good.

Can someone explain this one in more detail? I always though Tetris fell under some sort of public domain since the name is absolutely everywhere and used by dozens of companies (Nintendo being the primary one). I remember the creator couldn't keep a copyright due to communism in Russia and then he was later able to obtain it but it's all very confusing. In fact I remember Nintendo doing Tetris DS not too long ago. Who actually owns this property now?

BTW The original Panel De Pon as an import would have been interesting as well.

Tetris is controlled by the Tetris company. A board of 3 people, Henk Rogers, the original creator, and someone else, have ultimate say over all use of the Tetris license. They enforce uniform rules in all versions of Tetris-that is why all Tetris games now let you spin blocks endlessly.

Nintendo made Tetris DS by making a deal with THQ, who had licensed the rights to make a Tetris DS game.

So Tetris Attack is essentially black-balled unless they edit the game again? That sucks.

Incidentally, Jiggy, I would actually consider Lords of Thunder quite accessible. You get a health gauge, which is fairly rare in the genre, the shop system allows you to start with power-ups, and the game is one of the easier VC shooters I've played. Lords struck me as being quite accessible, actually. But otherwise, I agree with your points.
The only things that make me hesitate to call Lords of Thunder accessible are the reduced ship speed (compared to Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, Final Soldier, Blazing Lazers, and Gate of Thunder) and hitboxes that seemed slightly off to me. Individually either of those things wouldn't be a problem, but together I felt like I was taking more hits than what looked legitimate. Still a better game than Gate of Thunder pretty easily, but for accessibility I just wouldn't put it up there.

someone suggested Earthbound might release the day after MOTHER'S day on Starmen, I giggled. Obviously the reference is too obscure for us AMERIKANS but still would be cool!
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they released Earthbound on the same day as an WiiWare in an attempt to sabotage its sales and once again "justify" not translating Mother 3.
I think that plan would fail if they tried it, though--too many Earthbound devotees, and also I still don't think that VC and WiiWare will cannibalize each other--but I wouldn't be surprised if they were aiming for that. Maybe I'm too cynical.

I foolishly stand by my earlier prediction of May 19th. :(

Good enough week, since Puzzle League is a pretty good game (Renegade is not, however). Still, it's hard to not be a little miffed when Europe got Gradius 2 and Final Soldier, and will be getting Gley Lancer, Star Parodier, and Cho Aniki in the coming weeks.
I'm not too concerned about the specific games so much as that we're still stuck in the territory of two games a week--especially with WiiWare looming and potentially keeping the VC releases slow for the forseeable future. Also, if ever there was a time for Final Soldier or Star Parodier in NA, I would imagine that would be the week before Star Soldier R launches on WiiWare. Having neither one show on Monday baffles me.

womp said:
[Star Parodier] better make it to the US or there will be blood.
Final Soldier is ESRB-rated, so right now I'd call Star Parodier a lock.

Another two game week... :(

Star Parodier... why not Fantasy Star Soldier, the unreleased US version of the game? It was made, you can even find it (Fantasy Star Soldier) online if you look, because the disc's been ripped... I'm sure they have it. I mean, the only "localization" was probably changing the words of the logo (on the main menu) and nothing else, but still. Seems a bit odd.

Weird. I almost bought a PPL cartridge today for $15. I'd much rather purchase it for VC, so I'll definitely pick it up on monday.

Honestly, I never experienced any of the hitbox issues you did, but I agree that the slower ship speed could be a factor. Still, the game overall strikes me as being pretty neophyte-friendly, if only for the fact that it's one of the only shooters I've played that lets you touch surfaces without dying. You're absolutely right about the slower ship speed, though.

Earthbound fans are far too devoted and vocal to allow a minor thing such as WiiWare overshadow the grand masterpiece of game design that is Earthbound.

I'm actually looking forward to WiiWare quite a bit.

They could probably just rename it as it's basically Mario/Yoshi Puzzle League. How does Pokemon Puzzle League compare to Tetris Attack in terms of content?

Pretty much identical, but with some new modes and features like the awesome 3d puzzles. PPL is a great game...

And yeah, they could just call the SNES one Yoshi's Puzzle League... simple title change would fix the "Tetris" issue.

PPL?! That's a surprise! I must say I am tempted (Even though I have every single version of the game except the SNES/SFC one!)

I might hold out and see if the original SFC game gets put up as an import game though since I much prefer the original fairy characters. Or better yet, see if a Wii Ware version with the original fairy characters gets put up!

For anyone who has never experienced Panel de Pon in any form, I URGE YOU TO BUY THIS GAME!!! IT IS THE SINGLE GREATEST PUZZLE GAME OF ALL TIME!!!

Well, I mean, he called me out--in the very first word of his post, even. And it was only about two months ago. <_< But more importantly, Firestorm makes points that I agree with on a pretty regular basis, so his posts tend to make me take notice.

Same boat as Pureauthor, Aeana, Iam Canadian, Dragona, and many others I don't have time to list, really. Just off the top of my head I remember Pureauthor's "I dance on the graves of next-gen" comment from a few months back in a Media-Create thread, or another time when he pretended that he'd been wondering whether he'd become me after reading one of my posts where I talked about how I really loved DS and was about to buy a PSP. And I remember Dragona selling me on Baten Kaitos Origins with a six-word post where each word was either "buy" or "it" (great recommendation, by the way), and I also vaguely remember her using a cow analogy to explain why Lapsed got permabanned.

I think I even remember a post by Hcoregamer saying, if I can paraphrase, that reviewers shouldn't score down games because of personal agendas they're pushing for, and that if he were a reviewer he wouldn't dock points for not having a playable female character even though he thinks every game should. (I think that was him... Less certain about this one than the above four posts, but I know I saw somebody post something along those lines and I'm pretty sure that person had an avatar of a girl in pink.)

I selectively remember strange things, I guess.

I'm more concerned about why he oddly censored out HOLY SHIT for no reason.

There's a moderator on another board I frequent who edits quotes regularly to remove profanity, and who refuses to use it even to refer to the proper name of game terms. He has a reputation for calling "damnation" "darnation" instead. :lol

Actually, true story: when I was 16 I met this girl and liked her and thought I'd stop using profanity for her sake because she was nice (at the time I was agnostic, so I have no other explanation), and so I did. Just kind of quit cold turkey: dead serious about that, I just kind of thought "eh, let's not" and then I proceeded to do it. (I had a lot more willpower than I do now, I should say.) Incidentally, it's actually fairly bizarre being the one student in a full school who doesn't curse and has to find linguistic workarounds for the sake of communication, but yeah, I managed somehow.

Anyway, in much later years, well after we had stopped knowing each other, I would find out through the grapevine that she actually swore quite often and had no qualms with it--woo, plot twist--but I was too far out of the habit to switch back. And, even if I did, I would kind of feel as if I was reverting closer to my junior high self, which is nothing I particularly want to think about since--as I think I've said on GAF somewhere or other--I really don't like quasi-humans children under the age of maybe 15 at lowest, including myself. (I like to pretend I didn't exist until I was at least in high school, but barring that I'd at least like to disown any and all activities I did when I was that young--ah, that is, except for a select few activities like criticizing Final Fantasy VII and Ocarina of Time long before the rest of the Internet started doing so as well.)

Besides that, people tend to notice when a person has different speech patterns from everybody else--for example, a peculiar affinity for immense compound sentences and overuse of the em dash, as seen in this post--and I rather prefer to be non-standard since I generally have little respect or, at the least, little desire for what might be called an "average lifestyle," as I understand "average lifestyle" to mean. I suppose a non-professional psychoanalytical type could internally translate my words into "I'm shilling for attention by filling my life with wacky and gimmick, lol"; not that I don't think that would be a misrepresentation and/or an oversimplification, but I can see how someone else might come to that conclusion, which may or may not be incorrect. I believe it was crowphoenix who once posted "Jiggy sure is an enigma," and this is how I'd like to stay. Sometimes, purely for variety's sake, I'll even cast aside my own writing style and borrow the styles of other quirky personalities like Amir0x or The Take Out Bandit, who both tend to speak hyperbolically and love exclamation points a great deal. Actually, I'm not sure I have a consistent writing style--though others have claimed that I do--but just run with whatever comes to me when I decide to post at the time I decide to post. For example, today is not one of those days where I've decided that I can't allow myself to reuse the same word more than three times in a single paragraph, even if that word is an article, though that kind of thing often bothers me for no discernible reason.

Also, "damnation" is not profane, nor is "bitching" (and only that variant). Other words, however, are. In fact, I won't even use a certain word that's somewhat similar to "crud" except that the "u" and the "d" are not a "u" and a "d," which is highly stringent since I've never encountered anybody else who considers it to be a vulgarity--or anything, really, other than an equivalent to "trash."

But that's enough about me. Back to Virtual Console, and the 4.6% chance that NA will see any VC games released on May 12th while Europe is partying with import games all over the place. >:( Again, not to begrudge Europe getting something good for once, considering how abused that region is, but I demand love here too. This though I'll be buying like 4-7 games at WiiWare launch, maybe more if there are a bunch of unannounced surprise projects totally ready for launch. (Which is a perfect possibility, but this isn't the WiiWare thread, so I'm not going there.)

shit is just another way of saying poop dude

it's just an anglo-saxon four-letter word that fancy frenchy-type people thought was "below" them so they called it "vulgar" (common)

it's not actually "a bad word"

Thinking of downloading one of the following tonight:

Street Gangs (River City Ransom, damn the EU inferior name!)
StarTropics (Though I might leave long games like this until after my exams)
The Last Ninja
Impossible Mission
Wonderboy
Fantasy Zone
Gradius II
Final Soldier

Anyone care to make a suggestion? :)

You know, Jiggy might have an exceptionally good memory for posts, but I think habeem4999 has him permanently beaten. :P

Actually, I tend to remember completely random assorted posts months after they were written too, but not to the extent of Jiggy. Though I do remember a time where I had posted something about why handhelds are awesome and Jiggy had initially thought he had posted it himself (though he may have been speaking metaphorically) and added me to the "GAF Posters of the Year" document. I don't think anything ever came of that....
