Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Well, there we go. I'll buy it after I get my paycheck.

Question though: How does it compare to Terranigma quality-wise?

It's a bit different, if I remember my Terranigma well enough (It's been years since I played it), but the game is broken into two segments. In one you control your helper angle, who commands the people to preform tasks, clearing trees, farming, building roads and houses. That sort of thing. The flaw some might find here is that the people always build based on a preset notion of what fits in that space. While doing so, you, as the cherub, will also be required to shoot approaching enemies to keep your town safe.

The other segment is the hack in slash aspect. At first, it's difficult to get used to the controls, but given time you'll be jumping and slashing your way through the 2 levels per area. This you must do to protect your people from the evils of this world. The action plays out in a side scrolling manner. You have your basic sword slash as an attack, but will slowly begin to learn magics, which are quite useful.

Well, I've never played Terranigma, but I'll say this about Actraiser.

The side-scrolling action segments are pretty generic and by-the-book, as side-scrolling action games go. Not too challenging, either. The sim parts are fairly simplistic, too. What you need to do is pretty much spelled out and overall, they're pretty formulaic. I don't think either half of the gameplay could carry a game on its own, but they're just balanced so well that the game becomes more than the sum of its parts. The excellent soundtrack doesn't hurt, either.

It's just too bad about that boss gauntlet at the end...

Oh shit, OFLC update!

1 SUPER MARIO RPG - LEGEND OF THE SEVEN STARS Computer Games
Multi Plat.. G 13/06/2008

Ooh, very interesting. If that does make it over then it sets a very promising precedent - there are plenty of fully translated (into English, at least) games that never made the jump from the US to Europe/Australia.

Hm. Great week for the VC, but disappointing that no new WiiWare games are showing up. It's also pretty damn obvious now that only the US is really getting the shaft on VC releases, but I still don't see why.
Could it be the value of the dollar?

NICE! I guess I'll finally be able to play it and see if the game lives up to all the hype. :D

OMFG????!!?!?! Posts in the VC thread with happiness? I don't know what to do!!?!?!?

Nice update for Europe. REAL nice update for Europe actually. Kick ass about Neo Turf Masters and King of Monsters getting rated. Been really wanting both of these on VC. And hopefully now that the circle is complete, we'll see a SMRPG release here in the states soon. Oh, and I would pick up Alex Kidd as well.. never got around to beating it back then (still have it in the closet actually).

It's basically the precursor to the Paper Mario/Allstar Saga style of RPG, only isometric and with crazier music.

I know that this entry is played out, but I really want the first two Mother games on VC.

Never too played out. I agree one hundred percent. Unfortunately, JSnake, our old advance PR guy, brought it to our attention that there are legal issues regarding the music that stand between Earthbound and release. So, while its release is certainly possible, I'm not holding my breath.

And what about Mario Paint?

Unfortunately, Nintendo shows no inclination towards releasing games that use any peripheral controllers. So no Zapper games, no Super Scope games, and no SNES mouse games. It's really too bad; heck, I'd buy Mario Paint for the bug-swatting minigame alone.

Yoshi's Safari with Wiimote upgrades would be the greatest thing ever.

Such a great game, I just finished it, it's seriosuly worth playing just for the awesome music. Buy it. Now. (But get a joystick first...)

Where can I get a joystick that works with C64 games on VC? The Last Ninja is pretty much unplayable with the classic controller.

What's ridiculous is that Mario Paint could effortlessly be put on the VC. Any mouse game on SNES could be played with the pointer.

The Hori Fighting stick?

Supporting the controller accessories would require writing new drivers, which would clearly be too much work.

If they won't use the Wiimote to support the Zapper, which you would think would be the most obvious application of the pointer functionality, I wouldn't expect the mouse too much. But yes, it absolutely would work. Which is why it sucks that Nintendo won't do it.

I don't know, i'd rather you know, use a mouse for Mario Paint than the wiimote. Drawing on thin air would seem like a huge hassle, and the only part of Mario Paint that might be even remotely playable is the bug swatting game.

In fairness, they should really get around to making a Mario Paint DS anyway; I've been wanting one practically since DS was announced. And I can't draw for anything, but just having a touchscreen-based music creator would be enough for me.

And the fly swatter game.

These. Mario Paint was never about the actual drawing for me, since "abhorrent" would be too kind an adjective for anything I've ever drawn. Mario Paint existed for the sole purpose of the addicting fly swatter game and fiddling around with the music composer.

Okay, the fly swatting part I would actually want on Wii instead of DS. >_> In fact, they should make a 500-point WiiWare game out of it, with co-op and variable difficulty levels. I'd certainly buy it.

Anyway, yeah. Predicting Not Dragon Slayer, Not EarthBound, Not Final Soldier, Not Gley Lancer, Not Shining Force II, Not Super Fantasy Zone, and Not Ys Book I & II for this week. Naturally! :( But will one of my other wanted games--one that wasn't rated by the ESRB or OFLC--magically show up to save the day as a surprise? Or will I make it to eight full weeks without buying a VC game, despite having a library of 54 so far? Stay tuned to the VC thread to find out! Alternatively, assume the answer is "no" and then consider yourself a psychic in nine hours or so. Your choice. :(

Well I feed on your pessimism, so go ahead and keep on keeping on.

Even if that week happend like I said you'd still have people in here complaing that they didn't get their fifteen year old import shooter or YS or Shining Force II or Earthbound or whatever other sacred cow they want to hold up.

Optimism? Guess this will be Castlevania Week, with Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, and Castlevania Bloodlines.

Ew, I don't go after minors like that. Final Soldier is seventeen years old and Star Parodier, Gley Lancer, and Super Fantasy Zone are each sixteen, perfectly at legal age for Japanese girls games! :D

Serious note, though: do I really come across as that bitter? D: I might need to randomly sprinkle more lightness into my posts if so.
