Official Fable II Thread

So can someone point me to what has happened to co-op that is now a letdown to some people. Is it that you can no longer bring your own character into a co-op game, but have to choose a pre-fab character to play co-op? Is that online and offline co-op, or offline co-op only?

On the bright side this will help convince my room-mate to return his 360. All he does is whine about how he never plays it and all I ever play is singleplayer games.

I don't see that as being a "feature" especially when it doesn't truly effect your gameplay, also it has been stated time and time again, that npc's would react to your past doings.

The game seriously would be better off with no co-op, and I sincerely believe that it was left out until after it shipped to get better reviews.
I think you're on to something there.

I really don't get this. You can still play co-op with your characters' stats, and anything earned transfers back over. So you can still do it. Why it's "both characters on the same screen is simple, I think - Fable isn't one big open world, it's a series of large 'regions', and it'd be difficult to track characters' progress in regions you're not in. This game isn't like Crackdown or Saints Row, it's not the type of genre that lends itself well to Co-Op like that. It 'rubber bands' you together because any other way and it'd defeat the point of playing co-op - that is to play together.

The rubber banding together of co-op partners places an emphasis on pulling off special co-op combat moves (which are great, btw) and fighting together. It hardly kills it. And I understand why people think the henchman thing sucks, but it's purely cosmetic so whatever, the game plays exactly like it would if i was using my own character.
They did make the mistake of not giving the both of you free reign of your own camera, unless Im mistaken...

so, how bad is the texture reloading (compared to mass effect (fucking awful), bioshock (not as bad as me but very annoying)?

PC MMORPGs do this all the time.

I still want a full-on GTA-size Fable-type sandbox game. But with good story missions (which Fable 2 allegedly has, unlike GTA4, which could have been good but was poorly executed).

That would be my dream game.

Of course you'd need to add jumping. Crackdown-style. LEAP FORTH YOUNG WARRIOR.

EDIT: And of course Crackdown-style co-op.

In theory, this should be the case. Like I said, after the initial shock my friend and I had after coming to the realization we had to share a screen in an ONLINE mode, we managed to regain some hope. "Oh, well it can't be THAT bad, ultimate alliance shares a screen and that's pretty fun." Well, try playing co-op for more than 15 minutes and not wish you were back in single player. I dare you. The main problem with the current setup isn't the henchman thing. It's how the shared screen is executed. The camera is just awful. It's near impossible to play...ok scratch that. It's near impossible to enjoy. I felt chained and tethered at the mercy of a shitty camera angle at all times. This is an open world RPG, I should feel free, not imprisoned. Don't you think it would be nice to see where things are? Like, where you're supposed to walk, what's shooting you, etc? I sure would.

Yeah, that is a mistake, and they should and probably will patch it. The shared screen thing is a design flaw not because of the shared screen, but because of the way it has been executed. I think the idea of shared screen is fine, it's just the way they DID it that was terrible. And I think it'll be patched.

Sure it is.

It's a game.

Just becase a game is a game doesn't mean it's particularly suited to any given style of gameplay. Phoenix Wright is a game, but there'd be no feasable way to make Co-Op work. I was forced to play through FF9 once using the shitty excuse for Co-Op, but you know Co-Op turn based battles just don't work.

Co-Op generally is best left to shooters and free roam games, and while Fable has elements of both, at its core it's neither. Props to them for trying to add a strange game mode for this genre - and next week Red Alert 3 will be trying to do the same with an RTS campaign - but it's a weird genre for co-op to go in, and so what they've done witht he rubber banding is something that I believe probably was and is a neccessity.

I agree the henchmen thing is dumb, but at the end of the day it doesn't have any impact AT ALL on the actual gameplay. You'll still have the strength and moves of your character, just on a different template. And you still get to keep your exp and gold.

Anyone saying "I'm now not buying this because of the way co-op turned out" is frankly a god damn retard and is missing out on one awesome single player experience.

I don't see why people are shocked, same screen co-op goes with the whole mantra on the henchmen. Namely it's the heroes story, everything revolves around them and the henchmen are merely there to support them. Given the focus in the game is on the world and the heroes actions in it I don't see why people are so shocked by the move. I'm sure there will be an implementation of other heroes in your game in one Fable, but I'd imagine it's more likely to be something akin to species in Spoor rather than full on co-op or competitive given it would conflict with the games negative.

I think people are over-reacting far too much, when I show off my hero I want to show off the world they've forged, when I see my friends heroes I want to see how they've influenced the land. The tech for the franchise isn't far enough along to have me influence their world so I don't care much about playing my hero in it, people are getting way to worked up over what's essentially an tiny aesthetic issue. Fable isn't Too Human where it's just about showing off your equip.

Yeah I'd say it was very intentional due to the story/game structure. The game can keep track of player orbs anywhere in the Fable land already so it's not like it would be impossible for them to implement.

I really don't care regardless as the game is way too awesome as it is.

Well, it looks like the tables have turned on the game.

I'm about to leave and go get it. Should I?

BTW, I am not interested AT ALL in Coop in any variety or form.

Also, can anyone confirm Circuit City doing the $15 iTunes cards in store and not just online?

just found this. ugh

Some copies of Fable II Limited Collector's Edition missing downloadable content cards

October 20, 2008

We have identified that some copies of the "Fable II" Limited Collector's Edition are missing the downloadable content (DLC) cards, which give access to in-game bonus content. This represents a small fraction of the total number of "Fable II" games shipped and sold, and is contained to the Limited Collector's Edition of the game in North America. We are currently investigating the scope of this situation and regardless the outcome of the investigation, we are implementing a plan to address it. We will have a means to deliver replacement codes by Oct 28th so please check back then. We apologize for the inconvenience.

But this IS a game designed with co-op in mind. Or it was supposed to be.

From almost the very beginning, the co-op was hyped to hell and back. There's no reason a fully functional co-op shouldn't exist. None. I should be able to hop into my buddy's game, with my own character, not a henchman. I should be able to leave the screen he's on, with the only restriction being if there's something in his game preventing me from doing so (i.e. story-unlocked areas or summat).

This isn't a matter of Peter Molyneux over-hype, either. This is a matter of straight up poor game design.

EDIT: Also this is an ACTION RPG, not just an RPG. There have been plenty of successfully-implemented co-op modes in action RPGs.

One of the most popular is Diablo 2.

This I agree with. Well, insofar as I haven't actually played the game yet, but I am going to as soon as Amazon ships it to me.

So you can still pork the host's wife as a henchman?

Also, regarding the camera, does the host control the camera in the end? Who does it ultimately follow, or is it that you can't move without you both moving in the same general direction? So, for example, I can get into your game and just stand there, and you can't move forward because I am not moving with you as well?

So the weird part is, if you still retain all your stats, spells and abilities, just your looks change when you are a henchman, there is nothing more there than a technical hurdle of putting the exact character in. Why haven't they done it? Also, you can do it in Offline, but not online, is that it?

you dont have your weapons or items though i believe.

I'm about to log on and download the patch... I really hope that this fixes my problem of not being able to talk to my friends. : /

Is that for online co-op only, or for offline co-op as well? I just want to know because I have a cousin who lives nearby who I'm trying to convince to buy this game because we wanted to play co-op together. He can come over and we can play that way, but if its the same online and offline, then there's no difference if he just stays home and plays.

What the fuck is up with GameStop and not wanting to sell games (they have in stock) to you?

I'm all like, "hey, gamestop, here is my money... please take it."
And they are all like, "oh you want the liiiiimited edition? Sorry sir, store policy is if you did not pre order it I cannot sell LE or CE to you."

wtf? ive called 3 stores already, who the hell turns down money when you have the product?

I just pre-ordered the LE at Best Buy this weekend. Hopefully they have the non-retarded stock. But yea, where is quality control on this shit?

Anyone have any good pics of the LE yet though? Is the case a tin or anything?

Cardboard slipcase and a regular DVD case with sideways box art. 2 discs with individual holders inside.

Weird! The girl I know at Blockbuster just texted me and the head office apparently just reduced the price of the LE by $10 so she put a credit on my account!!!

AWESOME! That really makes up for not getting the extra content yet!

How long does the patch take to download?
I'm having some real issues downloading lately. Everything is taking me 10x longer than usual, no exageration.

Not to shit on people that bought the LE and didn't receive a card, but if MS keeps telling people to check Xbox.com maybe EVERYONE will get an LE code. How the hell is MS supposed to know who has a regular edition or a limited?

No dice. I can still talk to everyone NOT on my friends list just fine, but none of my friends can hear me.

Quick question, what happens if you have debt from the pub games? I won all the items from the tournaments but I'm about 60k in debt (lol). I have no desire to grind out to neutral, I have no intention of transferring money even if I had a bunch, I just want the items. Is there a way to get the items but not the money? Or if I did get the money how does the debt affect the game?

Wow, no tin? This is the biggest LE scam since Assassin's Creed and Halo 3 last year. Here's hoping the Fallout 3 and Gears 2 LE's don't equally suck.

If this is true, is there any reason to get the LE?
What else is there?

Honestly I'm having a bitch time trying to find one, stupid nyc

Yeah, I'm in a DMZ.

I even tried switching it OUT of the DMZ last night, haha. And forwarding the correct ports. And not forwarding them. No luck with any of those.

OK, not playing your custom character in co-op is bullocks. If they haven't fixed it by X-mas, I'm getting 360 + Gears 2 instead.

Has there been a definitive answer as to whether or not your "henchman" character brings his weapons/armor over into a buddy's game? I realize the skills/spells/stats carry over, but I haven't seen anyone comment definitively on equipment.

You don't bring anything over.

My Amazon LE copy has the code card! Sorry to those who do not have it.

Sweet, this gives me some hope. Mine should be arriving in a bit.

As for co-op, the henchmen thing was definitely said in the past. Having to share a screen though, I don't remember ever reading about. Not that it matter to me, this game is all about the single-player experience (something that hopefully is not a dying trend as everyone has become obsessed with having co-op in every game.)

I had crazy debt myself, but ended up breaking down and using the Fortune Tower glitch to clear it all away AND bankroll about 100k for myself. Only took like 20 minutes.

Supposedly there is no real penalty for cheating, and having debt will cause some frustration with pub owners in the real game supposedly.

Now if only I can someday get that 'Big Spinner' achievement in Pub Games I'd have all 200...god what bullshit that game is.
