Official Halo 2 Thread

Just curious...

Why would you buy the 2nd one if you didnt like the original?

cause everyone else is playing online...i wanna be cool too

although i'll be getting call of duty tomorrow

Currently on the third last level on Legendary, and I have 2 little Grunts chasing after me shouting "Arbiter! Arbiter!" all the time. After a bit of friendly banter between them ("How you?", "I'm good") I give one a Fuel Rod Cannon, he proceeds to lay waste to a Spectre and a battalion of Brutes that come round the corner.

My girlfriend who walks into the room, seeing this bizarre little creature kill everything in its path asks for a closer look to see what it is. So I walk up to him and zoom in on his face, and then he starts bouncing up and down and shouts "Maybe me be sidekick... like Robin!", making my GF start pissing herself laughing. So now she plans to play on easy just to hear loads of the grunts talk :D

Also I'm 100% sure I heard this wrong but earlier I heard a marine say something along the lines of "you seen that movie leprechauns? Its awesome!". If anyone has the real quote I'd love to hear it.

The best human line I can remember is after killing off a group of enemys one of the marines shouted, "Ok, everyone to my place for pie."

here's more of my crappy thoughts on halo 2:

in the grand scope of things, i think a few factors got messed up just a tad...just enough to annoy me. the perspective seems a little closer than halo 1 (possibly due to master chief's new suit), and it seems like you can't really see as much as you could through peripheral vision. i'm not sure if it really is actually changed, but it definitely feels closer. the distinct lack of several things that bungie said they would include (sprinting, melee combinations...although the latter i don't really care about) was also a bit of a letdown. i've also got a bit of a problem with the balance of weapons (well, just a few of them)... the only weapon that really got fixed as far as balance was concerned was the pistol, and that's just because its less accurate. sniper rifle and rocket launcher are still just as overpowered as ever (well the rocket launcher is slightly less powerful, but still enough to tip the scales of a match depending on how good a shot you are). the fact that weapons like the smg have ridiculous recoil (which i like), while the sniper rifle, the one weapon that should have more recoil stays the same, was also disappointing. you really shouldn't be able to fire off two successive shots at essentially the exact same spot.

on the other hand, there's a lot of good too. the single player is worlds beyond halo 1's. immersive, impressive, just plain awesome. halo 1 was kind of vague, but halo 2's story is just great. the different enemies are pretty nice too, especially in their dialogue. actually i don't really care for those flying guys so much, they're kind of stupid. but everything else is great. vehicles, vehicle boarding (although i think vehicle boarding is a little too easy), all great. ally ai is much, much better (although still nowhere near as good as it should be)

multiplayer so far, despite the fact that i've been playing the hell out of it and xbox live (for the 2 days i've had it), has been a little disappointing. the new maps (which i for the most part hate with a passion, except coagulation), combined with the slightly closer perspective, makes for what i think is a little underwhelming. what i loved about halo 1 were the vast, open maps like sidewinder, hang em high, and blood gulch. now the only map with a really significant open space is coagulation. all the maps seem to have more of claustrophobic feel especially with a perspective that at least feels closer. long, epic games in huge maps were what i felt made halo 1 good, and halo 2 seems like it's lacking in those.

now i know it sounds like i really hate the game, but that's not true. it's still downright amazing...i just feel like i liked halo 1 a little bit more. i'm already pretty addicted to xbox live and system link games...it just feels a little less than what i had hoped for, which is probably what i should've expected after all this hype. :(

As freaky as that sounds, I've noticed that too, like they turned the FOV down.

I really thought it was just that I had to get re-acquainted with Halo but I felt like the screen was compressed, like that feeling when you're playing split screen. You're not getting enough of the screen like you used to.

I thought it was all in my mind because no one else mentioned it until now. I'm kinda relieved actually.

Does 15 levels count
Heretic
? (It's the name of the intro, so I don't think I'm spoiling anything...but what the hell, i'll tag it anyway.

I noticed it too, but I eventually decided it was because of the dual wielding cluttering up the screen a bit.

Dual wielding massively clutters the screen. I feel like I can't see anything if I'm carrying two Needlers.

this is where 16:9 widescreen comes in. if there is any way you can play it like that, do so! go into your xbox dashboard and set it to widescreen. on my 4:3 tv it will display as 16:9 if i set that setting.

the wide view is awesome in a first person shooter, more so than any other game i've played because it helps when you get in close quarters combat.

also the wide view is sooooo much less claustrophobic!

thats exactly what i meant. the field of vision. god why did they have to change the perfect aspects of the original halo. the weapons are so cluttered. im looking forward to playing some more tomorrow though. i just wish the field of view was bigger. :( game would be perfect that way

I just spent two goddam hours trying to get through one room on Legendary - on the first level. I counted eleven Elites in there at once!

Beat it though. At this rate I'll beat it on Legendary right in time for Halo 3.

is it just me or do 99% of the people on xbox live have no FUCKING IDEA HOW TO DEFEND A FUCKING BASE? i mean shit, 9 times out of ten im the only asshole guarding the base on defense.

Keep posting what the Grunts and Marines say when you play, i can't get enough. This is definately one of the greatly improved things from Halo to Halo 2. :D

No, i did mention it, like in page 13 of this thread, and someone came to back me up.
Which was a relief in the same way.
I wrote "The first person view feels slightly 'narrowed' and gives quite a claustrophobic feeling compared to halo 1 (split screen especially)"

Our first system link, 2 vs 2 split screen match had me and my brother yell, at the exactly same time "wtf, i can't see shit !"..."what ? you noticed too ?"
Actually, he noticed at first glance, right away that there was something different about the perspective when he launched the campaign mode, but while in single player-full screen it really doesn't bother you much, and he actually thought it looked cooler.
But it can really get frustrating in split screen; you'll get used to it eventually, though.

I think they had to reduce the 'fisheye' effect to lower the # of polys displayed on screen in 16:9. I think the fov in widescreen is about as wide as halo 1 4:3.

I agree, when the screen is split into 3 or 4 sections, aiming is virtually impossible. I got owned time and time again when i was playing with 3 or 4 other people on the same TV.

:lol no i didnt keep track rofl ;D ^_^ faggy internet talk etc

edit: HOW are you supposed to beat the first area in that later level where you're transported (as master chief) into the room with Brutes (and more Brutes and Jackals flood in) when you're given a needler on Legendary? Good God that level is unforgiving right off the bat.

i've only done it on heroic, but there's another needler on the floor quite near your spawn point, and dual-wielded needlers are pretty decent against brutes. you'll also get a carbine shortly, and those are great against brutes. if you need to recharge your shields, you can duck into the little closets the grunts come out of and sometimes hide in.

I think it was in the level Uprising where some grunts said:

"they're easier to deal with when they're dead"

Not particularly funny, except that they appeared after I had cleaned an entire area of Brutes. Seemed perfectly Grunt-ish. :)

In one of the early Arbiter levels, I also like when those rebellious Grunts scream "where are your prophets now?", a clear Christian reference.

That section and the first level are probably the most frustrating and daunting parts of Legendary. And both times it is because of the high enemy count and limited weapon selection.

Even a single needler is pretty good against Brutes though. I usually just hang out at either one of the the far ends of the room where there is plenty of cover and you can only really be attacked from one direction. Slowly pick off the grunts with a plasma rifle, then prepare for an assault on the Brutes with needlers. Even if you don't die, the area would probably still take 10 or 20 minutes to get through. Enemies will just keep coming and coming after you kill a wave of them.....there's at least twice as many waves as you find in Normal/Heroic.

wtf Halo 2 has crashed twice allready in the span of just a few days. Once in title screen and the other time when I was going to escape from some elites I believe. No disc read error or anything, it just freezes. Has similiar things happened to anyone?

I've had some great stuff from the grunts playing Uprising. I came across one cowering in a corner in a room i'd just emptied earlier, and it said something along the lines of:

"No! Don't hurt! Me like Elites! Brutes nasty, smelly things! You go on ahead, me stay here, make sure none come from behind you."

:lol

NO it hasn't....your xbox is just stupid...nah i don't know haven't had it happen yet. On another note I just bought the soundtrack and I am impressed and stunned and anything else that is amazed.

I haven't noticed any pop-up. Maybe it's because I have a samsung drive or maybe I just haven't been paying close enough attention.

Anyhow, I beat the single player on Heroic. Didn't get the unlockable thing. So I played through the last level on Co-Op on Easy as Bungie recommended in the workaround and got the unlockable thing.

Now my profile says that the highest level I've beaten in single player is the last level on easy! WTF Bungie! I beat the game on Heroic!

New patch tommrow (possibly tonight)

The downloads will be available Thursday, November 17, 2004 after 3:00pm ET/12:00pm PT.
You may have the download available before this time, but everyone will have access to it by the time posted above.

Where:
This auto update will be available to Xbox Live members in all countries that Xbox Live is sold.

Details on the downloads:
This auto update will address the slow matchmaking issues that some members are experiencing. In addition, this auto update provides a fix to the issue where certain Television displays were clipping off the sides of the HUD. Finally, this auto update should decrease the “Dirty Disc/Failed to load map" errors that some members are experiencing.

That is all the information that I have at this time.

Thanks for using Xbox Live

sides of the hud? what does this mean? does this by chance have anything to do with the field of vision or point of view? well im about to go play =)

I'm betting yes. I have a strong suspician that the narrow field of view some of you were complaining about earlier in the thread has to do with the clipped HUD. If you think about this it makes sense... the HUD was "clipped" because they were zoomed in on the screen. By fixing the clipped HUD they have no doubt zoomed back out. This also would make sense because since to me, Halo 2 had the exact same FOV to me on my TV and I would know because I have been playing a ton of Halo 1 just prior to Halo 2 and I can say without a doubt on my setup the field of view between Halo 1 and 2 are identical. Last night after reading those complaints I even did and A-B comparison of them and observed them to be the same. But since I did not have the clipped HUD issue on my set, this is logical.

A clipped HUD would definately show a narrower field of view. So now that they fixed the HUD issue I'm betting they narrow field of view issue some of you observed will also be fixed.

P.S. I am also curious if the reason I didn't have a clipped HUD is because I had my TV ISF calibrated (?) since I noticed on the Bungie forums a couple of people that had my exact TV had the HUD clip issue though I did not. Anyhow... food for thought.

Yeah, Foundation is unlocked. Messed around in there for a few minutes...seems best-suited for Slayer/Team Slayer matches...maybe Oddball.

Team King of the Hill and 4-Flag CTF! Add vehicles for extra zing!

I can't stop playing Halo 2... the multi-player rox and the single-player is epic. GOTY without a fucking doubt. Go Bungie!!!

I've been playing Team Skirmishes with a friend for the past 2 days,we hardly ever lose and when we do its because of teammates either sucking or dropping...we had 3 games in a row today where both of our other teammates dropped :( Then the other team would brag when they would beat us,ugh.

I have never been online with xbox. the free 2 months that comes with halo2... i assume this is all i need to play online? what's the story here. i got cable already. so am i pretty much set? is it an easy process?

can anyone tell me if the HUD download fixed field of view problems? fixed the view from being too zoomed in or narrow? this would be great.

also I am going to pick up s-video cable soon. this friday or this weekend.

for those of you who have tried s-video is it a substancial improvemnt?

because when i play halo2 on the big pretty new jvc tv we have there it is jaggy like hell. jaggies almost everywhere. low resolution seems like. game looks ok but nothing special. I reached the 3rd level. so i seen basically 3 environments. low resolution and jaggies are the big issues on this television set.

For those wondering what the 480p bug is, here's a pic, shamelessly stolen from the bungie.net forum:

Cut-off.jpg

HOLY CRAP. this difference is going to be huge. this was the only issue i had with the game basically. well mostly. i need to get this tasty patch =).

i need to go online. i hope its an easy process =)

theres a way to leave all the multiplayer maps. you need 2 people and a plasma sword. cant explain how to do it but me and my friends have been doing it on custom games just to fuck around, its pretty cool. you can get REALLY high up especially in headlong.

adam20 said:
Does the patch increase the hud view even on non 480 displays?? thanks
No, the patch fixes a bug that occurs on some TVs with 480p support, where the display is cut off on the corners. It's not an increase in the HUD view or a more zoomed view. If you don't have this bug, the patch will do nothing for you.

Just finished the game on Heroic. I remember a big spoiler from Tuesday Nov 9th when CNBC ran an story on the huge sales. They showed a scene from the game with
The Arbiter hugging either the Sarge or Miranda Keyes on Delta Halo
. Is this a scene that is played if you beat it on Legendary?

Also, what is
Gravemind? The source of the Flood? Is the game's plot that the Forerunners were humans who became too advanced and created a biological weapon too powerful for its own good?
. Still kinda shocked that Bungie took a cue from
MGS2, having you play as MC for 8 levels and The Arbiter for 6, and even more surprised that you finish off playing as The Arbiter!
.

Oh and I just got the joke...haha, Bungie!
The Ark of the Covenant
. So what will
The Ark on Earth be?
Gentlemen, any guesses?

Going off of the spoilers I posted above,
if Gravemind is trying to milk Cortana for info, is it trying to find out Cortana's secrets (i.e., the location of Earth and The Ark) to obtain the killswitch for all 11 (I think I counted 11) Halos? Thereby allowing the Flood free reign over the galaxy/universe?

You can edit your posts ya know.....

I think Gravemind is
what the Flood becomes when it has collected enough mass
. On the documentary on the LE disc, Joe Staten says "
We must be like the Flood: One body, one mind."

There are
seven Halo's
. This should come as no surprise to Bungie fans... :lol

Oh, and you
play as the Arbiter for four levels and the MC for 11
.
