Official Jade Empire Thread

But they did. KOTOR had some great dialogue. Each line delivered wonderfully

Why you hating on BioWare so much?

Sigh. I'm hating on all dialogue in video games. I usually skip through a majority of it because it's just not very good. Bioware are even worse about it because they usually have more dialogue than they do gameplay.

Btw, Kotor sucked. Gameplay and narrative.

Damnit.

I went to two places to buy Jade Empire today. First stop, Circuit City. I checked earlier in the week when Jade Empire would be in via their catalog... Thursday. I go there, no Jade Empire. I ask the guy at the counter. "We didn't get our shipment in." Oh really, asshat? Then I'm going to Best Buy (which is conveniently right down the street from this Circuit City). I go there, no Jade Empire. I am confused, dazed... I check my watch, which has the month and day on it... yeah, the game should be out. I ask the festively plump Best Buy clerk who loiters around the games aisle. "Do you guys have Jade Empire?" And I don't remember it exactly, but he said something to the means of 'the street date changed to the second of NEXT MONTH so he couldn't sell me a copy' (I'm thinking that's BS).

So I come on here to find this stickied thread and whattaya know? A bunch of people who have, and are enjoying, Jade Empire. Son of a bitch, what the hell happened? I guess I should've went to Gamestop.

Is the Limited Edition of Jade Empire really limited? Like say, to pre-orders or is a limited time offer? Or is it limited in the sense of Halo 2 limited edition... which is not limited at all.

So keep that in mind when telling others in a forum that a critically acclaimed game sucks. It might just be that it's your tastes that do.

HEY MODS, I WANNA BE PERMBANNED, OK? GREAT.

Uh, yeah, that's NSFW...

Also, I'm surprised this guy hasn't been banned already. Not that I'm for bannings or anything but he did say "fag" earlier. There must not be any mods who care about Bioware... (hey, that rhymed)

not true! I'm pretty sure Bish is friends with the guys at BW. But good riddance to stupid rubbish in the meantime.

My, what a charming fellow.

Oh well, quick question; is anyone aware how sizeable, big or small, the impact is of the conversation modifiers are tucked away in the stats? Intuition, charm, y'know all that nonsense.

what i found so funny was his insistance to keep claiming that the dialog sucked yet admitting he never read it. :lol how the fuck do you know it sucks if you don't even read it, moron? :lol

what's up with some of these gamers with all this pent up hate nowadays anyhow? by his contradiction, you could tell right off the bat he wasn't being honest; and i seen that banning coming from a mile away. kudos to the mod. :)

This is a good question. I have an amulet on that ups my Intuition factor and I've been getting more options to intimdate people into agreeing with me. Also, I have some bonuses which really boost my focus and I notice that I'm doing all sort of crazy focus jumps to get away from booby trapped chests where I'm taking minimal damage. I have the speedy chick (Forget her name right now. Zen Li?) so that may help. I believe in speed over power though! :D I always take the quick moving, fast hitting characters in Dynasty Warriors as well! You can't hit what you can't touch!

I picked the Chi focused character...although I seem to be going more towards Focus traits. Oh well, extra Chi never hurts...well, that's not really true, I have awful health due to my 60/40 split on Chi/Focus.

I did as well. How are you progressing? Having tough times with combat? I haven't played in 2 days due to work. I was thinking about restarting since the impressions I get is that the game is more combat based than magic.

I've always found lists to be a sign of fanboy desperation and immaturity which you unfortunatley conveyed, I'm sure to his glee. They rarely convince anyone of anything. Kotor was a great game. He would of posted it blew until eternity. Your list just wasted everyones bandwidth. Why bother? ... and that's not a question to be answered. I've learned long ago that you cannot convince the world of anything but only comfort yourself in the knowledge that others feel as you do.

ok mebbe im missing something

I just hit chapter 2 and all I seem to be doing is whacking the A button and when I get in trouble go into bullt time and hit X over and over?

Yeah you're missing most things.

I just poped in the extras disc and can we say SHIT? what is it, i'm being force fed this G4 crap? I was expecting more out of the Limited Edition. Oh well now to play the game.

Hang on there, he didnt list like a fanboy at all. He just pointed out that Bristow's opinion was so far out of the norm, that its obvious he is trolling.

I firmly believe that even if you dont like a particular title, you should at least have the ability to recognise its obvious quality. Its like saying ferraris suck, when in actualt fact they dont and are great cars - just not for me.

What what what?

What a way to completely miss the point.

Let me make it clearer... coming into a thread and announcing a widely critically acclaimed game sucks in at least most aspects, is simply stupid, and the list was simply a way to show him how completely clueless and out of touch he was with how most others think. Obviously, the intent is to show that while a game might not be for him, doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable for most others.

The point was never to post a 'fanboy' list to show the game being the best thing ever, or anything for that matter.

Oh it was clear and I didn't miss the point and did you convince him? I think he knew how popular the game was and I think he knew he was pushing buttons. Lists are stupid. My opinion. Live with it.

.... and to add. I don't want to insult you unlike the treatment you afforded me yesterday but on the Jade Empire box it says from the developer of the 2003 GOTY. Do you think he did not know how Kotor was regarded? Yea, you showed him.

his list wasn't anything even remotely to be considered as "fanboy'ish" and especially not immature (scratches head on that one). and you probably should of took your own last sentence of advice instead of making this weird post.

p.s. i seen how everyone piled on you today in that other thread and imo that was very lame of them. it's when i see that kind of stuff i start thinking about taking a break from here.

Are technques you buy automatically applied to your character? I hope so because I just bought balance of nature which cost me 4250 silver!

Yes. Go to the character stats window, and press X. You should see the technique bonuses there.

shpankey, how many lists do you see on this board to prove a point?

As far as yesterday hey, it's no big deal. There was a misunderstanding sparked by a mod no less that made an inflamatory remark that incited the inmates. I like this board for the most part. In fact I think it's the best on the internet. When you run into a mob like that you can take a break. As for me. I like to post and mix it up, as you should know based on our time at VoodooExtreme. I think I'll stay. Thanks for the concern though. As for IJoel I owe you an apology. My mistake.

Here are some just finished the game and watched the documentary thoughts..

The combat was fun, and there were some great boss battles, but overall it was kind of easy. It definitely seemed that there was less things to do than in previous Bioware games, and the whole follower influence thing from the Obsidian boys in KOTOR2 would have been a cool addition as well. It was a fun ride however, making me stay up wayy too late at night trying to get as far as possible, and i look forward to further games set in this world.

Here are some suggestions for Jade Empire 2:

Less styles, more moves - Combat is fun, but I only ended up using a few of the styles I picked up, and since each style only has 2 moves more or less, combat was kind of simplistic in that regard. I did however feel like a badass swordsman in the end though, mowing down legions of enemies.

Better role for magic styles - I relied mostly upon martial and weapon styles, since it didn’t seem that magic was doing anything that great for me. Even though it is ranged, enemies would close the space pretty quickly on me anyways.

Less linear story - The game was a great rollercoaster ride, but it really felt that you were being pushed in a certain direction unlike KOTOR. Of course, most non-linearity in games are illusionary, but its nice to feel like you could do other things instead of where the story is pushing you. The sense of urgency is good though.

The lack of inventory actually didn’t bother me that much, because I had a good time messing with my gems, but it did make the game feel sorta RPG-lite (well besides the combat). It’s all about endgame in RPGs when you’re rolling deep in some crazy armor and badass weaponry.

Features from Previous Games, such as multiple locations to re-visit over time and Strongholds

Can’t wait to see Bioware’s next game, Dragon Age, but in the meantime, I’m going to have to learn the Way of the Closed Fist ;)

I'm a good 6 hours in the game ---- does openfist/closedpalm have any visual impact on your character??? You would think that it might, seing has how the lack of inventory keeps your character looking the exact same.

I'm just not seeing a reason to go OpenFist or ClosedPalm, since you get to see a lot of the dialoge --- mostly in getting to see your selectable responses.

The beads are nice --- very PaperMario --- but they're just mathematical tweaks, nothing too insanely special......

I managed to get a 'rare' spirit orb from one of the big froggies, it's fun turning into him and laying the smack-down.

I'm going the way of the 'closed-fist' .... and not really seeing its impact on anything outside of the menue-screen.

Can someone answer my question, pretty please?:

Is the Limited Edition of Jade Empire really limited? Like say, to pre-orders or is a limited time offer? Or is it limited in the sense of Halo 2 limited edition... which is not limited at all.

It doesn't seem to be limited at all right now. Every store I've been to has carried either only copies of it, or mainly copies of it.

Is anyone else that's using a female character feeling like the game was "intended" to be played through with a male character? Dialogue seems very...awkward at times with a female. (I picked the balanced type; the balanced male looks goofy) I'm thinking of starting over using the monk character (fast type).

It's limited to specialty retailers like EBgames and Gamestop AFAIK; that's all they are stocking. The game itself is actually the same in both versions; the LE comes with a second disc, which contains the making of video and the extra character, so even if you got a regular version, you could get the extra character from a friend that has the LE.

Where do you live, BTW? It wouldn't happen to be in Atlanta, would it? (There's a Circuit City and Best Buy right down the road from each other and the mall is also there) If so, just go to the Perimeter Mall EBgames. They should still have some copies left.

Haven't noted anything like that so far, I'm in Chapter 2 though.

There was a point in the game early on when Dawn Star and my character (Jen Zi) are in the same camera shot, and the camera makes it so it looks like they're about an inch from each other, staring into one another's eyes. I thought they were both going to go at it at that point. :lol

No, actually I thought it was handled better in JE than KOTOR and KOTOR II. People have actually been refering to me as a woman instead of it always being vague like in the others.

You can be in a lesbian relationship.
If you talk to Silk Fox enough the right way she'll start talking about how she's never felt this way towards a man and how much you mean to her. In Chapter 6 we finally kissed. I've heard you can fall in love with Sky if you're a guy.

I've been wary of Sky lol. Looks like it's a closed fisted lesbian for the second play-through.

Picked this up today... this is my first Bioware game and it's pretty damn good. If it keeps up, this'll be my favorite game on the Xbox. Got the limited edition and the guide (the regular guide, not the one with the DVD of it, since they didn't have that in stock). There was only one copy of the limited edition in my store.

Graphics are really nice, even though I don't like the fluctuating framerate... a consistent 60FPS would have made this game look phenominal. The architecture is pretty varied and the towns remind me of what a Suikoden game *SHOULD* look like in 3D.

The fighting styles are kind of unique and an interesting addition, but the combat feels a bit too slow paced and lethargic for me. Even compared to say, Fable... It has more depth than Fable but still I prefer the latter's combat. Certainly the overall game is a *LOT* better. The combat actually reminds me of those old N64 AKI wrestlers, though sometimes the hit detection just seems off. A lot of people seem to be enjoying it but I think that's the weakest part of the game.

The story seems pretty decent, but lots of elements remind me of a typical Japanese RPG plot.
Collecting pieces of the Amulet, your village burning, your ship crashing in the middle of nowhere and you have to rebuild it...
There's a LOT of dialogue (almost excessive amount, Xenogears level even!) though I like how you have more control over your choice. And yes it seems that inrcreasing your intimidation/charm/etc and you get some different dialogue options laid out for you that you can take advantage of. I'm wondering how subtle some of the responses are - like, if you answer intimidatingly/sarcastically a lot, does your intimidation factor go up? Not too far, just made it to Tien town or whatever it's called, in Ch 2. (about 5 or so hours in). I'm using Radiant Jen Zi, cuz she's pretty cute, and I like more agile characters. I like girl characters in games.

The shooting minigame is pretty cool, but a bit more sophistication would be awesome (maybe for the sequel, have it so you get bonuses based on how well you do - I'm better at 2D shooters than 3D action by far).

Overall, I'm enjoying the game. Well, now I can see why Bioware has got the support they do, this game is definitely one of the better Western RPGs. Though it still feels rather linear in terms of story. I think my perfect RPG would have Western style character development, semi-linearity, lots of subquests, with Japanese style overall plot, polish, battle systems, and character designs.

Uh... okay, it's in the MS retail site thing, but there's something about its availability?

EDIT: Ah, it WILL be available, but they don't know how many copies. Better fill out all those quizzes tonight. :D

I picked up the Limited Edition at Best Buy today and all they had at Target was the LE so it's not just at the specialty retailers.

Considering that there was a flame war in here it's pretty pathetic that this thread does not have more particpation. Do most people on this forum not play AAA Xbox games? Seems that way.

I figured as much. When the game came out there was one person on my friends list online where there is usually many. The game is not XBL aware. Reminded me of Halo 2 where everyone was online, just the opposite.

Too busy with school and work but this game fucking rocks. I am deeply enjoying it and I love admiring the environments.

I'm at Tien's landing and I'm about to
fix the dam and find the second piece of the amulet
. I just cleared up all the side events in the village and went through a series of entertaining events. The combat is simple yet elegant; I can see the game hinting at the depth of the combo system and attack variations. So far it's a winner on all accounts, hopefully the game keeps up the pace and doesn't let down.

One of my favorite moments was acquiring
the Toad demon attack style and being absolutely surprised that I actually turned into the beast I just slaughtered
. I kept myself in the dark as much as I could and I wasn't aware that you could do that. I always assumed that you would
summon creatures or have them as followers not actually turn into them
. That brought a huge smile on my face.

10.5 hours into it and I just got past Tien's Landing. I'm trying to finish as many quests as I come across though.

Quick question:
Did you clear the forest before you got the amulet and fixed the dam? Of can you do the forest after?

Just trying to figure out in which order to do this stuff.
