Woohoo -- I'm holding it in my hands right now! Waltzed into my local Dick Smith PowerHouse (an Aussie electronics store) before close and they were just stocking them on the shelves for tomorrows trade, so I politely asked one of the lovely sales assisstant if I could nab a copy and she gave me a smile, grabbed one of them and rang it up for me at the check out. Scored it for AU$49 too -- pretty cheap considering most stores have been pre-ordering them for about $55-65.

I'm itching to watch it but I promised myself that I'd sit through the extended editions of FotR and TT again then watch the extended edition RotK.

...

Oh fuck it -- see ya's in 4 hours!

I was just about to post this , mine just arrived by mail 3 minutes ago.

Can't watch it though, as my "better half" has made me promise to leave it sealed until she gets home. :(

She's adamant that we're watching all 3 extended editions back to back... 12 hours... I can't even comprehend watching 1 story for that long.

Watched it already, as ive had it for a little while now. It gets the job done, although i noticed a few scenes which are changed in the way words are spoken even though the words are the same. Odd.

Some of the added scenes like
faramir and eowyn talking at the house of healing and they hold hands
seem to come out of nowhere and then dont further develop the situation.

Just finished it. Pretty sleepy (it's 3am) to give full impressions, but here's some added/extended scenes I remember were most notable:

* Confrontation between Gandalf (and co.) and Saruman at Isengard. IIRC, Christopher Lee (Saruman) was pissed off with Peter Jackson for deleting his only scene in the final installment, and refused to attend the premiers.

* Short faceoff between Gandalf and The Witch King. This was the scene in the trailer that got me all excited, hence I was rather letdown to see it was left out in the original cut.

* Before the final battle, the Fellowship being told that Frodo was dead thus they were fighting a lost cause. Now I understand why Aragorn looked so teary when he said, "For Frodo."

* Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the Dead hijacking the pirates' boats. There's also a cool avalanche (of skulls) scene before it inside the haunted mountain, and a couple of rather annoying and painful Gimli moments and one-liners that you'd wish he would just die by the end of the film.

* Little extended scenes that emphasises the torture Frodo was enduring due to the ring. Although I was kinda hoping that we'd see Frodo dragging himself towards the centre of Mt. Doom, 'cause I always thought there was a chunk missing from that scene. You'd see Sam further back watching Frodo entering the mountain -- and then *poof* there they were inside. It's a bit stretched out in the extended edition but it still didn't feel right.

Oh and BTW, I discovered the easter egg similar to the ones found in the extended editions of FotR and TT. On the second disc, go to scene selections -> scenes 77-78 -> scroll down until an icon of the ring appears.
Like the previous two, it's a skit taken from the MTV Movie Awards -- this one where Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller (as studio managers or whatever) try convincing Peter Jackson to make the series into a "quadrilogy". Not as funny as the other two skits I thought, but it still made me laugh.

Does it have Frodo and Sam marching with the orcs? Not important but I for some reason was pissed off that it wasn't in the movie.

Yeah but i find the way they executed that scene rather unconvincing.

I'll repeat what I said in the OTHER thread.

I enjoyed the original more than the extended edition. Though there are a couple of new scenes I really enjoyed, I'm happy they cut out what they did.

:lol

I tend to fast forward their scenes in this movie now. It's very annoying to hear and see over and over and over....

Just want to make a plug for the 30 minute documentary about Cameron Duncan - very talented young film maker who died from cancer, and was the inrpiration for 'Into the West'. Worth a look in.

Yeah watched it last night and thought it was really moving. My gf was balling her eyes watching the Strike Zone short film.

Very sad that he passed away especially at such a young age (16? 18?). He had a very bright future in the film making industry ahead of him.

Heh, truly sorry guys, didn't even consider it could've been a spoiler - it's speculation as far as I know (and I know nothing). Probably good if you removed the quote as well, lest more trouble persists...

I just picked it up...Extended Edition, not Gift Set. Just came out today in the US. So excited. I have not watched the whole thing..but did watch the voice of saruman, the mouth of sauron and the house of healing. so glad to see that they have integrated that back into the movie as i think it really helps to explain a lot. will be watching the whole thing tonight and will have to make sure to check out the documentary. that sounds special.

OMG the Easter Egg on disc one is the funniest shit ever. The disc two one (the MTV skit) is retarded. The disc one hidden video is funny as hell. :lol :lol :lol :lol

goddamit, Griese!
new stuff i really liked:

The avalanche of skulls was freakin' badass. I loved that.

I was a little surprised to see grima kill saruman. i had no idea how they were gonna work that since they didn't film the scouring of the shire. thought that was cool.

the mouth of sauron was simply AWESOME. Easily the best thing they added. That was so fucking cool. That alone was worth me buying 2 versions of this movie.

And I dunno why, but this was the first time this movie just flew by for me. I always loved it, but I always ended up getting bored at one part or another the first 5 times i watched the movie.
Now i watch the version that's 50 minutes longer and it seemed like the movie was only 2 hours :lol I don't get it.

Yep, I found that as well. The pacing just seems far better in the EE.

Really enjoying it so far, some of the documentaries are heart-breaking. Love the little speech Christopher Lee gives on his final day, he just commands respects. Great to see him back in as well.

I bought this last week and upon watching it felt that the additions really helped strengthen the movie as a whole. Everything seems much more fleshed out compared to the theatrical release with many aspects greatly expanded upon and loose ends tied up. I suppose some additions could have been done without, such as the witch king confrontation.
But upon seeing this scene with the witch king saying what has to be one of the most bad arse things ever said in a movie as his sword turns to flame and Ghandalfs staff is smashed to bits, it all just adds so much fucking impact to the movie as a whole.
One thing that was missed though should have been Denathor looking into the Palantir, which was only hinted at. It would have been nice to see the other important source of his eventual turn to madness (the other which was shown was the death of Boromir).

I started watching the four-disc set at noon yesterday and the credits are rolling on disc four now.

I'll start watching the commentaries later today and then this weekend I'll watch all three extended cuts in one sitting.

gothmog? isn't that the name of a balrog?

Yes it was, but it was also the name of the orc commander in the movie. He is mentioned, but never seen in the book (and the book doesn't specify whether or not he actually is an orc).
