well, cutting alex smith got me a little bit of cap room. i have $6.66 mil after my rookie pool is taken into account!

master, here are some things i can think of that you can do and can do right now:
1. re-sign the players that are available to re-sign for you. you can give them whatever contract you want but understand if you low ball them, it's possible they will cut off negotiations and hit the FA market. also, you can adjust the bonus money given to give them incentive to sign. lower salary but a higher bonus is tempting to them. be mindful of your cap #'s though!
2. you can choose your offensive and defensive "scheme". this is a superficial setting but it is useful regarding the ratings you see. for instance, i have my scheme for offense set to west coast. so whereas alex smith might be rated a 77 in a "spread" offense, he is rated an 84 in a west coast offense. it doesn't change a players actual rating, only lets you set what is important as far as what you are looking for.
can't think of anything else that you could currently do

lulz i never have and never will use a list. i mean wasting my first rounder on an offensive lineman
sucks too because i need help elsewhere but i have no money to sign a good FA and the other player i was looking at maybe getting is really a luxury. he's probably on bluemax's list anyways so i doubt he would've dropped to me at the end of the first even though he is predicted to be a late round pick

i cut alex smith so it gave me some more money. right now i have $6.66 million AFTER my picks are accounted for.
i'm confused if i will get some more cap space or not when we advance to FA because i haven't re-signed any of my guys on the list and i think they are still counting against my cap in the game right now. manningham and a few others have kinda high salaries (not astronomical but i think manningham has $3 mil salary)

Will i know right away if they accept my offer? I basically offered a guy what he was asking(1.7m vs 1.77m) and he said "thanks my agent will get back with you next week". Now he is listed as unavailable. Did i lose him already?

yep, he didn't like your offer. when you exit that screen, you will see a little message below that says "offer accepted/rejected". if he disappears from the list you know he accepted (without backing out). if he lists as unavailable then your money is no good to him!

Back out to the previous menu and it will tell you. Or look under the "available/unavailable" slot. If it says unavailable, he ditched you.

also post when you're done guys (as you have been doing). once i have confirmation that everyone has finished their re-signings (or letting whoever they didnt want leave) then i will advance to the next segment and we can get some more scouting in before the FA bidding period
