You can trade online. You just have to have the other person submit it and you accept it online.
I think you can accept trades online if the person proposes it in-game.
I had to do that once. It was pretty awkward since they had to search everything. It held up the line a lot more than it should have.

My cap space surprisingly opened up since last year.
I had about 4m in spending money last year and that all went away with rookie signings. After trading Pierre, taking on MJD's contract, and releasing a few randoms, I now have a bit of room to deal with. It feels good. I also decided to sign a lot of my rookies to long term contracts so they don't screw me over with your exact problem. I had that happen to me last year and I lost a few good backups.
