Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

The game is called Snake's Nightmare - Guy Savage. It's directed by Shuyo Murata (ZoE2). I don't know what "artwork" you're talkin about but in Guy Savage, you're basically a killer Para-medic. :D

So it's not an official game then?

just beat it...time was about 15:30

killed 257, seriously injured 60...i probably killed 50 alone during
the part where you're supposed to protect eva after the crash...she was just so damn slow and they kept catching up to us so i had to knife everybody.

i beat the boss by draining her stamina bar...but i forgot to pick up her camo because i ran to her instead of the box and triggered a cutscene. :lol dammit. the last 4 hours or so are just insane, anybody who's even started the game should finish it just for the final few hours.

edit: also, :lol at:
snake shooting ocelot with a blank

ocelot: hey, that was fun, seeya round! *jumps out of plane*

as far as the series goes though, i'm still debating whether or not i like mgs3 better than mgs.

so right now it's mgs3 = mgs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> mgs2

Have you got a link to any more info on this?

Er, uh...sorry if I spoiled anything important, I don't think I did. Either way, you should stay away from this thread until you finished the game, like I did. :P
Nah. There's a particular philosophy to these types of threads that everyone seems to get. I'd rather participate in discussion and trust that I won't have anything spoiled.

Fuck. I'm still so pissed that I exited the game without having saved for so long. How retarded...

Just picked the game up today, and so far I'm pretty impressed. I liked MGS1, but thought 2 was absolutely terrible. Three already seems better than two; CQC is just so fun. The lack of radar actually makes the game more enjoyable IMO. Stealth kills are just much more satisfying. I didn't really have any expectations for this game since MGS2 left such a bad taste in my mouth, and so far MGS3 seems like a really pleasant suprise. Hooray for low expectations!

what do you reckon kojima's going to do for mgs4? i'd really like to see mgs3's outdoor environments and general gameplay style return. i think it'd be cool to see the story of the original metal gear retold. a young solid snake going up against big boss would be amazing, given the first three mgs games as background.

After seeing how well Kojima handled doing a prequel with MGS3 I wouldn't mind remakes of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
This game gives a taste of what has been alluded to in the pervious to MGS titles; that Big Boss is very complex and dynamic character.
I wouldn't mind seeing more of the backstory from the older games fleshed out in modern form.

There might be a problem though. The whole series is very self-referential and much of what happened in the past repeats itself. So in a sense we've already experienced some of the critical events/themes from the older games.

It will be interesting to see what Kojima wants to do, should he decide to direct another MGS game.

Yeah, something like that would be cool. And maybe that would mean a different voice for Solid Snake too.

Because it's like I've heard David Hayter growl too many times now, his voice acting is limited. He can't scream in a dramatic way. Don't get me wrong though, the voice acting in MGS3 is pretty good (compared to many other games), but since the game has a clear cinematic style well above any other game today, they should get more serious about the voice acting too. Hire real (voice) actors and/or get a better voice acting director.

EDIT: And speaking of the voice acting, I was disappointed in the voice for The End. In the TGS 2004 trailer (with the Japanese voice) he sounded like an old, drunk geezer who barely could talk in a clear fashion. I thought it was a perfect voice, since he was supposed to be very, very old. But he doesn't sound crazy old to me in the English version, just somewhat old. Like he's in his 50's or something.

And I swear that sometimes, The Boss sounds EXACTLY like one of those friendly computer voices telling you the spaceship/powerplant/secret underground laboratory is about to explode in 30 seconds.

But I'll be fair now and say I liked the voice for Paramedic, very suitable and nice.

Just got it while christmas shopping. What is the deal with the "I like MGS1" or "I like MGS2" question?

As far as I know, it won't really change the game in any way, apart from the very beginning.

If you choose "I like MGS2", the difference will most probably become clear to you within 10 minutes or so (if you actually played MGS2, that is). :)

Not unless fans go CRAZY and flood all Konami boards with posts of how AWESOME it is! :lol

I seriously think Shuyo Murata needs to have a chance to direct another game, ZoE2 was awesome... too bad by then the series was doomed.

Owned...actually, it's quite possible.
His camouflage sometimes malfunctions and you can see sparks
. Use your sonar and your motion detector, too. I think the next MGS shouldn't have thermal goggles, it makes things too easy sometimes.

By the way...does anybody know where to *cough* acquire MGS3's soundtrack?

I beat him without using them. Press start and check out the map and it shows where he last took a shot. He stays there for a minute or two after each shot (trying to get off others) so point towards there and snipe away.

Yes,
just wait for his stamina to drain half-way and he'll have to eat to go invisible. Throw down poisoned food (like the red frogs nearby) and shoot him when he goes for the food, keep a lot of the frogs to repeat the process so he never eats good food. You can also throw food on traps.

Oh yeh, one more thing about MGS3. Harry Gregson Williams was owned by Norihiko Hibino. Next MGS soundtrack should be all Hibino.

Did anyone else just have emotions running through your body during credits with "Way to Fall" and that MGS song we all know was playing?

I was yelling Snake and thinking of The Boss. lol

(as usual)

I can't hate HGW's work, but since he can only do cutscene stuff, it's really hard to keep up with the quality and exposure that Hibino has with every game.

As far as the rest of the game goes, I like it, and quite possibly GOTY, but it really feels like a different game as opposed to a sequel. I mean, all of the real gameplay staples of the previous two games seem to have been tossed aside. Quick movement doesn't work, knocking and leaning are hardly used, there's no view-explanation radar, and autotargeting really is stripped down compared to previous games.

And I think I used hanging even less than in Twin Snakes.

So in that sense, MGS2 is my favorite sneak game, and MGS3 is my favorite survival game. I just really hope the sneaking style doesn't gather dust, because it's a lot of fun (no matter how many times Ubi tries to compare with Splinter Cell...)

My only big beefs with the game:

-Load stuttering for radio. This is a pretty embarassing flaw, and will probably force me to seek out HDloader/HDadvance, but they could have pretty easily worked around it, instead of letting the PS2 noisily grind and drop out the background audio 2-4 times to start a conversation.

-Difficulty. I don't mind the maingame. The chase is kinda long, but I can probably deal with it. But two of the boss fights -
The End and The Boss
- require some knowledge of gameplay mechanics that the game doesn't want to give you. (They're still pretty inspiring fights, but both have some supernatural "cheating" elements that work against you) Even the Ape Escape minigame has the top times at pretty obscenely low levels (makes most of Substance look like a joke)

Shit I didn't know you being weaksauce was a flaw in MGS3!

Oh well, SELL YOUR PS2S ITS ALL OVER! :lol

This basically only happened when I talked to Major Zero

I think this game sets a new record for the longest amount of time you play before the actual title credits roll. :lol

Hot damn, I just watched the ending once again...and it seems to me that Big Boss' intentions are quite clear as to why his dream was Outer Heaven. It wasn't clear the first time, but for whatever reason, its more apparent to me watching it again...

...speaking of which, does anyone have a hi-res pic of Big Boss saluting (the last shot before the credits roll) with a tear in his eye?

I miss the Cutscene Demo Theater...

yeah, i wish they'd kept the demo theater from twin snakes. but i guess they're going to sell it to us separately in document of mgs3 or mgs3 substance. i've kept saves right before most of the big cutscenes, though.

duckroll said:

*hands duckroll the Jar-Jar award

Irregular difficulty flow is definitely a flaw in game design to keep an eye out for. Hiding behind the weaksauce argument is very GAF of you, though.

Kenobi: yeah, cutscene theater would have rocked. Especially if Konami had the time to add a 1980s/90s era Big Boss model, or, say, Jimmy from Ape Escape 2.

I've killed The End when he was still on the wheelchair (lol at the "explosive sequence") and done a whole new section insted of the one you fight him. Damn, that was fun as hell. New, huge environments with Ocelot's soldiers hidind and sniping everywhere. It took me more time to beat that section than it first took with The End.

BTW, after the sequence where EVA jumps with her bike over the cliff to reach the "very big military base" (the one the Shadohog is in - forgot the name), before going back to the mountains I was able to snipe down a couple of guards from afar. Does this have any effects on the game afterwards?

i liked most of the voices in mgs3. hayter occasionally goes for the gruff voice and misses, in which case he ends up with this ridiculous wheeze. i strongly identify his voice with snake, though, so i don't think he should be replaced. although if he is, i can do a pretty decent impression! volgin was ridiculous. the boss and ocelot initially sounded miscast, but i warmed to both of them. young ocelot was just a great character generally. para-medic was cute. i ended up listening to practically all her movie synopses. and i liked how they'd occasionally comment on the game, or how kojima feels the game should be viewed. major zero was perfect.

some of the dialogue was either badly written or translated, though. it particularly degenerated to pompous nonsense when the boss tried to wax philosophical or political. i wonder if the original japanese is any better. fair number of solecisms and fudged idiomatic expressions too. there are so many games that just need a writer to look over the script.

ending question:
how did ocelot/the patriots end up with the philosopher's legacy? there are a few possibilities, i guess. ocelot could have taken it off of snake while they grappled on the plane, but i'd like to think this would have been visible if you were looking for it. while snake's listening to eva's tape, you see him fidgeting with what looks like the microfilm...so i guess it's remotely possible that he also had a fake, which eva stole, and that he then turned over the real one to some representative of the patriots. but i don't know where snake would've gotten the fake, so it's more likely the microfilm he ends up with is a fake that eva planted...although i don't know why she'd bother planting a fake at all. or perhaps the boss knew that eva intended to steal the microfilm from snake, so she gave him a fake, and gave the real one to ocelot at some point off camera...though there's nothing that explicitly points to this, it's the version i favor. i guess it's a sign of how much i like this game that i'm indulging kojima's convolutions at all. normally i tune them out after a certain point.

groznyj grad. i did that too. took out a few explosive barrels and one of those frog dolls while i was at it. that view was cool in and of itself, but it's even cooler that there was stuff down there to shoot. if you wound one of the soldiers without killing him, you'll set off an alert, and helicopters will come after you. the second one stays far away and lobs missiles at you, and is really difficult to hit. i never managed to do it, actually.

A remake of the original would be great now. Since we have more info on Big Boss and more of a connection to him and Solid Snake it'd be cool to see how Kojima would pull everything off with those 2. It's no longer about Big Boss being this evil guy since you can now understand exactly where he's coming from.

Other than a remake i'd like to see a game done on the mission that The Boss mentions she went on with the Cobras.

Yeah, I mean of the voice cast, I only really had problems with Major Zero and The Boss, but they had such long lines at times that it was hard to blame them for putting any emotion into it. There was more than a few bits of dialogue that sounded just awkward or could have used cutting down; sort of like the translation crew was too busy trying to keep it accurate to the original instead of talking it out and adjusting accordingly.

Probably not a big deal for the casual gamer, though.

As for the microfilm, I agree it takes some guesses to figure it out, but the one thing I would say is that Eva didn't see The Boss give Snake the microfilm, so it's entirely possible she didn't know he had it. At that point (and since Snake still hasn't completely tossed his government in the trash), it's possible he willingly gave the film.

Another possibility, of course, is that it was in the item bag that Ocelot tossed out the window.

Kojima has definitely left an uncomfortable amount of questions this time, and sadly I don't get the impression that is very motivated to remake MG1/2 yet.

The graphics in the cave are unbelievable, and I say this having just played Half-Life 2 on a 9800 Pro. Here come the floating segways. :lol

I have another question, about Colonel Volgin. Why is he saying "kuwabara, kuwabara"? If it meant something they surely would've translated it methinks, so I'm guessing it's a name of something...but is it ever revealed exactly why he says that and what it means?

In MGS2, Kojima was hoping to leave the series in his successor's hands, but no one wanting to take his mantle and him not wantinh to end on a sour note led him to making this game. Man, now I'm sooo grateful for MGS2 being so underwhelming. I didn't think a game would ever top MGS in my personal experience, but MGS3 just totally did that. He ends it so well. Like, I'd be completely content if this was the last Metal Gear game. Well, aside from a MG1+2 compilation showing liquid and snake being raised. But yeah, this is what most artists aspire to create, a masterpiece. And it's not a masterpiece just by videogaming's standards. I don't know how to put it. It's a supersaturated game that leaves those that have understood it's message and theme with such satisfaction. What a true patriot should be.

The dialogue, to me, sounded a lot like the dialogue in ZOE2. They have this weird thing about not using pronouns or something. Like in the beginning when they said something like "After World War I and II, the world was split into two" When you repeat "two" twice in the same sentence it sounds kind of silly. Its just bad writing. Like I said ZOE2 did this, as well, especially with the liberal use of Aumann. The quote in particular could've been changed to, say.... "After World War I and II, the world was torn in half" or something to that effect. Its just one of those little things that really makes the dialogue sound stiff.

the repetition of a word in a sentence or a paragraph is not bad writing. that's just a grade-school superstition perpetuated by inept teachers. follow the repetitions in a piece of writing you particularly like, and note their music. the use of synonyms purely to avoid repeating a word -- i've heard it called "elegant variation" -- is a mark of bad or at least amateurish writing. use the word you want. don't worry about whether you've used it already.

in the particular sentence you mention, i like the two uses of "two."

From what i've gathered, "Kuwabara Kuwabara" means "Heaven forbid lightning from striking us". In a Japanese myth you'd say it to prevent yourself from being struck by the god of lightning.
I guess Volgin forgot that at a certain point in the game. :p

Really? Because I found it grating. I agree with the principle of elegant variation, though I don't think it needs to be used all of the time. Besides, it mostly applies to adjectives and other descriptive terms. We're talking about numbers, basic nouns, and proper nouns here. It honestly wouldn't hurt to throw a pronoun or two in there once in awhile. Now, if you're purposefully using the repetition of word to a certain effect, fine, but I honestly don't think that was the case here. While the MGS have had decent scripts and complex plots, I hardly believe its meant to be written like fine literature. In the case of the "two"s, maybe it was just Hayter's delivery, but it definitely made the line sound unnatural. It probably wasn't meant to be some form of musical writing.

This didn't jump out at me.

Perhaps you're being a bit too"..." anal "or something". "Its" okay to relax and cut them the same slack many have shown your poorly written replies. :D

Reflecting surfaces, mirror like water, everything is wonderful. The lighting with the torch is also awesome.

Even if you don't use the torch which lights the environment convincingly, what little light makes it into the cave system gives the walls a shimmering Crystalline texture that reminded me of the shiny-shingle demo from Half Life 2.

Also, the light-hitting-water effect with rippling reflection on the cave walls and refraction underneath the pool is pretty stunning.

I'm sure tech-heads could point out how it was all "faked", but the environment is still impressive.

I didn't even find the torch. :lol

How do you get into gorki lab? I kill all the guards and dogs outside but the door doesn't open. I tried the scientist camo but that has nothing to do with getting into the place.

you can crawl through a hole in the wall. it's obscured in a patch of grass. there's probably some way to get the door open from the outside -- one of the guards vaguely alluded to it when i interrogated him -- but i don't know what it is.
