Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

I read the manual early on, and dicked around for hours in the Virtuous Mission part. Got the controls down pat, then moved on. It's making the ehole experience a lot less frustrating, and a lot more enjoyable.
Yep I noticed many of the negative impressions by people were were kinda based on the fact theyre not playing the game right. If you dont use your equipment as efficiently as you can, its going to be a hell of a lot more frustrating.

Sonar = awesome

Sorry if it's already emntioned in this thread, but anybody catch X-Play's "Top 5 reasons why Hideo Kojima is $@%'n nuts!"? It actually went to #8. I laughed my ass off.

Am I missing something, or is there absolutely no chance of using the sonar or motion detector on hard difficulty level? I don't have either of those two devices yet... Not that I've needed them so far, but Sonar could prove to be useful.
Yeah, I was told in a codec that I should use them at a particular stage in the game. Buuuut I didn't know what they were. I'm getting by fine with the mic, at any rate. Any more help and it'll probably hurt the experience.

For those that DO have sonar (or the motion detector), are you playing on Normal then?

Anybody else try this out?

Hit R1 button during various scenes in the ending to look around...might see something special! ;)

Sneaky Kojima...left the R1 button out in the ending...

Damn it,

Hard is really humbling. I've been trying to get through the game on hard without continuing, and not killing anybody.

So far the best I've managed was to get up to the Fear.

The biggest problem with tranquilizing bosses in hard is you tend to run out of darts relatively early.

I really think there's a problem with my game, this is about the The End fight.

There is NO SNIPER RIFLE, Eva keeps telling me it's in the armory in south Socrovenno, but it AIN'T THERE, what the hell is going on? I'm playing on hard, if that changes anything.

I couldn't find the sniper rifle where Eva said it was either. Apparently there's one at the warehouse. I'm past The Fury now without a sniper rifle, and I hate the thought of heading all the way back for one. I hope none of the upcoming bosses are too hard without it.

OMFG. I've just completed the game. It was great and the last 2 or 3 hrs of the game were O_O!

I can't remember the names of the areas, but the sniper rifle is after the caves, but before the warehouse. After going under the canopy of trees in the river, you can take a left before you go into the area that leads into the warehouse. The area is almost identical. It's in there. Doesn't matter if you're playing on Hard (so am I).

The sniper rifle isn't totally necessary, though. He falls asleep so you can just sneak up to him and use pretty much any gun.

I've heard you can actually use the sniper rifle to kill The End at the warehouse before he is wheeled in after the cut scene. You end up having to fight through a bunch of regular soldiers in the forest in his place.

I think I'm going to do that on my second run through. I might actually prefer a variety of enemy placement vs fighting The End again (who was an awesome boss, granted).

Damn the story
gets confusing now... I'm fighing The Sorrow - is Snake dead or what?

And fuck, the torture scene is one of the coolest i've seen in an videogame.. EVER!
Followed by the beautiful sewer/waterfall scene.

That torture sequences is one of the best in any game. I really wasn't thinking Volgin was that great of a villain till then, once I saw that then he turned into a good villain. And the animation in that sequence is stunning.

Does anyone remember the sequence in the first E3 trailer where Snake swims up to an enemy base and shoots some explosive barrels? Is that still in the game but not in a story sequences or was it removed completely?

Just wondering....is the sequnece in the e3 trailer where you fight the hover soldiers in mountains in the game? Also i didnt get on the machine gun and fired at the helicopter, is it possible?

The mounted machine gun is definetly in there. I did it and killed a few gaurds that were coming after me before jumping off and running up the rest of the mountain.

You can shoot the helicopters down with the heavy machine guns. But it's pointless since more will come and take their place.

I think you can fight the flying platforms on the mountain if you destroyed the helicopter at the base before the Ocelot/Pain fight

That sequence from the trailer can be done optionally at the warehouse docks, at some point the guards patrol they will be near barrels for you to shoot and kill most of them in a big chain of explosions.

Also, just spitballin here, but wouldn't it be cool if, in the future, Big Boss has battle damage rocket arm hand and giant horn growing out his head? Oh and along with that he has a dog with an eyepatch and a nearly naked babe that won't sass him and just do what he say?, And they were like, just fuckin pissed at the world? Man.. what a trailer and game that'd be

It's very possible. I stayed on one of the turrets at the base and took out 5 or 6 helicopters before they just stopped coming. Also took out a few with the turret on the path up to the mountain base.

I think it has been slightly altered from that trailer scene. Isn't it the area where you get the Sniper Rifle right after first meeting the GI Joe "hover chairs"?

Oh, what Vagrant said.

there is a finite number of helicopters. if you keep shooting them down, they'll stop coming. i make a point of pissing off the helicopters whenever i get the opportunity. shooting them down with the rpg's is just so damned fun.

mgs 3 is really terrifyingly good. i'm at groznyj grad right now. if the endgame is actually better than what precedes it, this might be goty in a very remarkable y.

Clear about 4-5 hours for the final act. You've got to play it in one sitting. Despite how many people hyped that final portion, my expectations were exceeded.

Once the final part really kicks in its hard to put the game down. It's like one awesome thing being topped by another within moments of one another.

Yet another question about the ending:

Is it possible to finish the game without Eva(and if so, how does the last bit play out)? I had very limited rations, and Para-medic suggested that I could leave her behind after the motorcycle crash. I just couldn't bring myself to do it, though. :)

You can't. Snake won't pull himself up at the cliffs unless she's there. My first time through I tried when I ran out of food for Eva but Snake wouldn't do anything at those cliffs.

Limited rations or limited medical supplies?! If so, I NEVER run out of medical supplies although I cure myself everytime. And if that's what you meant by "rations", STOP TALKING IN PRE-MGS3 LANGUAGE! :lol

If you really meant food, then just haunt for some more! She will learn to love the taste of snakes...

That's what I figured. And damn, it was a CHORE feeding her, with that draining stamina bar. Until I figured out the Goliva fruit from the trees gave her so much energy.

So when does these final 4-5 hours begin?
Just beat Volgin

I've played for about 10 hours now, and I have to say the game is great so far. I was somewhat disappointed by the demo, and also the first part of the full game (ie the demo + a bit more).

But as I played, I got used to the controls and features of MGS3. The camera doesn't bother me much at all anymore, all the gears (like radars and such) aren't just there, I actually USE them frequently to my advantage (apart from the AP sensor). I thought the lack of a radar would make the game a chore, but as it turns out I've become much better at sneaking around than I ever was in an MGS game before! The game really encourages you to sneak around.

Lying camoflagued on the ground and swiftly standing up doing some CQC is really satisfying. :D
But I have to say it's really hard to avoid the guards long enough if you're discovered. There are usually no defined places to hide (like in MGS2), and it doesn't work by just running to the next area or lying down being camoflagued either. Usually I just die or kill every soldier. Is there anything I'm missing? :/

I really appreciate them cutting down on the "codec" talk, it's VERY reduced compared to MGS2 (or better managed, I don't know), and there's a LOT of gameplay without interruptions at times.
Maybe this will sound strange, but it almost feels like there aren't ENOUGH cutscenes in the game, especially for all the different bosses...I remember when you got the background on all of them, but now you barely get to know anything. Doesn't bother me much though, but still...

Hehe, I really like all those things you can do at the title screen. But I also noticed you can play around with that opening credits movie (with the Snake Eater theme song), changing the text to different languages or bringing up the "Snake Eater" voice sample. I just discovered that now...man, Kojima never ceases to surprise me with his funky little details. :P

EDIT: WTF, I noticed you can actually control the text...and those parachutes in the beginning too. :lol

Just saw the tv commercial, pretty good...all cutscene footage with a voice over saying how the world is gonna be in destruction but one man is gonna save it...and it uses music from the game, although it's hard to hear. At least they are advertising the game

Have any of you guys seen the "hidden" cutscene where
EVA takes out the transmitter from Snakes body
Weirdest cutscene EVER!!!

Not only that. Also try R3 (when moving the the right stick) and L1 ;)

You can also change the language of the credits text by pressing L3. And R1 triggers a sound byte "Snake Eateeeeeerrrr"

Ok I get about 7 hours into this game now and I'm not missing the radar at all! Between swapping between first person and the ability to lock the camera in a further direction it is all I need! In fact I hope future Metal Gear games go this route (No Radar)! However I'd still rather have that other the shoulder 3rd person option. Or even the ability to move in first person would be fine with me. If you need a radar just use the motion detector it works fine. This game is awesome good fun. Anyone who even remotely liked Metal Gear Solid should try it out.

How the hell am I supposed to beat
The Boss? Is she the final boss?

And another question - the Snake in this game, is he The Boss they talk about in the other two MGS titles??

u-neek:

everytime she grabs as you hear snake grunt hold the CQC button, you will parry her..then grab her from the side and throw her down. Kick in the head twice when shes down then run away...repeat.

If you feel like being a bastard, go in kneeling position with sniper rifle and thermal goggles. Kind of takes away the fun of the battle but you can drop her in no time

I had to use the sniper for that
because of the time limit
but you're only able to take just a bit of it off because
she
starts attacking more quickly and so I had to use CQC to kill
her
off (more than half
her
life bar.)

Affirmative. This is what I did after several unsuccessful attempts of handling the situation by other means. For good measure, I also planted a claymore a few meters in front of me :P

How do I get the cutscene with Johnny like in the TGS trailer.

There will be some rations inside your jail cell, pick them up, and throw them out the cell door near Johnny. Repeat until you see cutscene.

Hey I need help guys....I am stuck about 3 hours into the game when you are trying to get into some cave....I come to the third electrified fence and there does not seem to be any trees or passages or ways to clime under the fence. I need to get over somehow. Zero offers no help either. Do I have to turn back?

If I'm thinking of the right fence, look for a tree to climb.

Or if it's past that, and there is a hole in the fence at your waist, run and dive through it.

-edit- I think it's pretty obvious that I didn't read your post very carefully.

There's got to be SOMETHING. Keep looking.
