Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

Spoiler warning for those who have not beaten the game yet.

Now I really want some short prequel to Metal Gear Solid 3, starring The Boss. She was just a great character...and her story was so sad. I almost cried when they explained how she would go down in history as a criminal. It's easy to fight or even die for something when you know you'll go down as a hero, but she did it knowing everyone would label her as a traitor.

Something about The Boss was special, I knew that when she first appeared. She wasn't just some weird villian, something deeper was going on with her. You could even see it in her eyes during the cutscenes. Amazing how they even managed to give her that much personality, where you could even sense the internal struggle within her. God only knows what they'll be able to do with future consoles.

My total time was like 25 hours. I tried to kill as few people as possible and would restart during some sections if I was spotted (like planting the C3 or finding Sokolov). I ended up getting the Patriot gun, Tuxedo, and camera. I got a few of the boss camos. I got The Fury's, The Sorrow's, Volgin's, and The Boss'. So I'm going to play again to get Ocelot's, The Pain's, and The End's. Not to mention there are still 1001 things I haven't seen or want to try out.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is easily my personal Game of the Year. I pray Kojima stays around for the next game...but I would also like to see some more games like Ac!d where different people take a stab at it, like maybe the director of Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner. But for the main games, it has to be Kojima.

Yes, being able to have a game with you playing as The Boss is a must. They've got a set up for her to do some sort of back story with so it wouldn't be hard. Plus unlike Raiden, alot of people really like her. So I don't think there'd be an uproad about having to play as a female character.

I mean we totally have Big Boss set up, his character, his story...but Metal Gear no longer does him any justice after MGS3. We need to change that.

I mean imagine Outer Heaven and Zanzibar with MGS3's gameplay and cinematic flair!

Grey Fox! Solid Snake! Big Boss! So much goodness could be had.

I agree, Kojima needs to close this valve completely before opening another one...
 
Yeah, we really need to finalize the ties between MGS3 and MGS1.

I think they can make a very compelling story without revealing what is revealed in MGS1.
 
Agreed on the front of having a MG1+2 remake in one game. MGS3 has deinfately set things up nicely for those two to be remade. And again, it would bring everything full circle.

(Although I am all up for what was also mentioned earlier in terms of a MGS that takes place after 2 with Solid Snake setting up his own Outer Heaven.)

But, on a side note, was there ever an explanation as to why Solid Snake never used a knife? Because I would seriously miss that piece of the gameplay from MGS3 to whatever comes next.

Kojima already made history-repeating with Liquid Snake, there is no need to make Solid Snake the bad guy. As far as we know, maybe Big Boss set up Outer Heaven to prevent the world to collapse, but The Patriots alternate his motivation to make him look bad...

I haven't complete MG and MG2, I could be wrong in my theory...

Yeah, I'd like to know too. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the knife seems to be Big Boss's weapon of choice?

I wouldn't mind seeing a spin off game from that certain female character. But I'd rather see a new game that closes the gap between MGS3 and Metal Gear 1 + 2 first. I want to play Metal Gear 1 + 2 badly right now. Never played them before....! However, if there is a shot we can get a new game/remix Metal Gear 1 + 2 together I'd love to wait for that first. Hell I'd take a Metal Gear 1 + 2 remake on GBA right now..! But I'd rather have it done on next gen consoles with all that sweet cinematic direction.
 
Whoa...I got my copy of MGS3 signed by both Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa today at the Glendale Galleria..:) It was nice meeting the creators who developed one of the finest games this generation. However, the gamespot/planet X managers only allowed signatures for one game or poster and we were not allowed to ask questions. But I did scream, " Zone of the Enders 3...MAKE IT HAPPEN KOJIMA!!!"

The idea here is that the Outer Heaven thing isn't necessarily bad and nor would Snake be the bad guy. Setting up a state that's independent of the Patriots isn't necessarily a villainous act. Of course the Patriots would send someone in to get him and that agent would think Snake is the villain at the outset. This is effectively the same setup as MG 1 and 2 but, knowing what we not know about Big Boss and the Patriots, changes the perspective on the scenario entirely.

Liquid wanted Outer Heaven because he felt outcast from the world as the role of the soldier diminished. Solidus wanted independence from the Patriots, which is noble, but also for all of the power himself, which wasn't noble. After MGS 3 it can be speculated that
Big Boss felt like he could no longer trust his or any other country and set up Outer Heaven as a defense against the Philosophers/Patriots and wasn't necessarily a villain himself. Hell, Gray Fox even ends up defecting so there must have been something persuasive in BB's argument
. Did Big Boss even do anything villainous in MG 1 & 2 outside of capturing Dr Pettrovich?

I like this idea for MGS 4 because Kojima seems to really like a lot of parallels through the stories. After having Big Boss confront Boss and Solid Snake confront Big Boss, I think it would be pretty fitting to see Snake confronted by an apprentice. There was some setup for this in MGS 2 but the mentoring was effectively split between Snake and Solidus.
 
I want to know if anyone played through the first time as action packed as I did. When that alert hit and I got caught I HAD to take out everyone in the area. I ended the game with 493 kills.

I had 373 and my title was Shark. What was your title Mrbob?
 
I still had a Shark title rating too. Time to shoot for 500 in my next playthrough...!

I don't do this often but I <3 CQC. Most of those kills I had were from CQC. Future Metal Gear games *have* to, at the very least, have a varation of CQC in it.
 
Hmm, well, that sucks. Now I'm going to plan B right away instead of Plan A: Try to get through the game killing as few people as I can.
 
I also got a Shark rating. But mine is for a even dumber reason. I would use stealth 95% of the time, but I would kill the guards after putting them to sleep...maybe I shouldn't have done that. I'm just paranoid about them waking up while I'm doing something else. Finishing time was around 25 hours, I would restart if I was spotted in some areas. I just hated the idea of being seen and then hiding.

I'm going through the game again with all my awesome camos.
Let's see those Russians fire on me while I'm wearing my Cold War camo pattern. Or hear me sneaking behind them with my silent Spirit camo from The Sorrow. Hell, take fire on me. My awesome Sneaking suit takes damage like a tank. I AM THE REAL METAL GEAR!!!!
But I'm doing a lot better this time around. I'm getting around all the first areas without being seen at all. I must have been rusty with my Metal Gear Solid skills during my first playthrough. Now I'm taking these babies out like cheap high school girls.

I wish The Boss would have given up a better camo. The Snake suit is awesome, but I was hoping that I would get her white Sneaking suit, that thing is awesome.

Oh, and I believe all the stuff from the trailer is indeed in the game. The conversation with Johnny is there for sure, I got it. You have to throw the food he gives you back, or just give him some of yours. Then he will say "Hey, you're not such a bad guy.." and then they have their little talk. I restarted during that section a few times just to make sure I got that. I've done that section a couple of ways. I made myself vomit so he would think I was sick, I used the frequency The Sorrow gave me to open the door, and I've played dead.

Snake's Nightmare game > Chaos Legion

Metal Gear Solid 3 has so much freaking replay value. Jeez, I don't even know what cool little secret I want to try first.
 
I got Panther, I don't know if that's good or not.

I'm the type that sneaks around guards, or if there's a situation where I can't find a way past the guard without being caught, I'll snipe them in the head each individually.

I was prone a lot of the game (either to evaluate the situation w/ scope, to crawl past guards slowly or to snipe them in the head)

Oh wait, I also snuck up on a lot of guards and slit their throats, then hid their bodies.
 
Ok, question about the bonus minigame that is hard to find:

Does anyone know how Snakes Nightmare loads up? It didn't happen for me once during the game

I think I may go out and buy the strategy guide now to find all the secrets.

I thought it was easy. After being tortured and thrown into the jailcell, save. Then you just need to load the save file (don't know if you need to restart the game).

And I think I know how to wake up from the game.
I kept playing the hidden game as long as I could. Eventually I got the red PS2 screen saying "insert a PS2 disc" or something and had to restart. But when I tried another time and died, Snake woke up.
 
Just finally beat this game. This was easily my GOTY. What an ending! Now it's time to go back through and pick up some cool stuff.

haha, same here, i havent finished the game yet, i only got to "the end" but i'll get a shitty rating since i've been doing exactly that, killing them once they're asleep "that bitch will never wake up and fuck up the path i cleared" :lol

Btw, im not sure if i'll ever kill the end by the end of the week, i dont know how any full time worker with little to no time left for their hobby could. That motherfucker is hard to find >_<

Seems like camo % doesnt always work either, i dont know why but i was at ~80%, moving and he spotted me, sometimes im 90%, in the grass, not moving and the fucker comes from behind and shoots me in the ass >_<

As for my strategy when fighting The End,
it became kind of easy once you start using the map. As soon as he fires a shot, he's marked on the map...so I just used the map for reference and figured out where he was. Then it was sniper rifle + thermal googles for me. Somewhat cheap, I'll admit. :/ But the last two shots were kinda funny. I bumped into him, and shot him once with the shotgun. He used a stun grenade and tried to run away, but I could faintly see him running and fired another shot before he got away. Damn, it's gonna be fun replaying that boss again. :P

Oh, I've just discovered dogs like those russian rations more than Snake. Cool.

I thought it was a good informative review that covered all of the gameplay elements, and it acutally touted the awesomeness of CQC. For some strange reason, the other reviews ive read say CQC is not a necessity and just put in the game for the hell of it. The only thing i thought was missing in the review was any mention of the music, sound and VA in the game.

Yeah, it would have been really hard to mention that in a creative piece. "Don't you think your comrades and enemies sound weird, Snake?"

Someone was talking a few posts ago about finding the Sorrow's corpse. I just confirmed, if you're quick after healing Snake's wounds after Boss pounds on him in the beginning, you can do the whole R1 thing to view in first person, and if you go all the way to the left, you'll find the corpse wedged between the rocks. Very interesting stuff.
 
What this thread is missing are screenshots... Too bad I don't have a capture card in my computer, otherwise I would have published screens related to what I am saying...

Like The Sorrow corpse. I find it hard to beleive... No screenshots?
 
Just doublechecked, and what I wrote is legit. You only see the skeleton still, but around the skeleton are the remains of his outfit... pretty freakin' sweet stuff.
 
When I fought The End I just ran around and waited for him to shoot at me. I would then drop down onto the ground and look for him with my binoculars and then pull out the sniper and give him two quick shots and then anothe one as he was getting up. I found him to be really easy.
 
Just so you know, if you save during The End than don't play for a week, he'll be dead when you load the game.

So make sure not to let the game wait for too long.

heh. i kept a save right before that fight, in case i wanted to replay it. so much for that, i guess!
 
Question -
In the mountain section, when you first find that stationary AA gun, is it even possible to kill everything and everyone to a point that the alert ends? I think I've downed around three helicopters, and killed numerous soldiers before they finally killed me. Next time I just decided to screw that gun and helicopters, and sneaked through the whole section

At the mountain section, some unexpected events are starting to unroll. Can't wait to see how all this pans out.
Am I the only one who couldn't initially figure out that EVA and Sokolov's wife are one and the same? The boots gave her away in that one cuscene, but I was completely ignorant up until that point :P

is great! Gives you the sense of how big that place really is. Can't wait to get there and see what happens next.
The guys with the flamethrowers at the mountain top (that's basically where I saved and quit for the day) are fun to fool around. I remember someone saying that you can shoot at their fuel tanks and blow them up, but I didn't managed to do that - I would shoot at the tanks, but they wouldn't explode, and he would just get alerted

i think there are five or six helicopters total. they're much easier to take down with the rpgs than with the stationary guns. and break out your sniper rifle at that groznyj grad vista. there are a couple guards and several explosive barrels to snipe. plus if you screw up, you get to fight more helicopters.
 
Well I played last night for a few hours...
I thought that was all the time I would need to finish the game, but little did I know, after downing the shagohod, there's still more to be played. I was so tempted just to stay up and finish it, but work today would have been torture. I just healed up me and eva and quit right before heading to the river (after that awesome motorcycle chase) There can't be more than an hour or so left right?

Nah, I thought that was the game's most obvious twist (other than the Boss defection for those who hadn't seen any previews). Especially when EVA wasn't available to contact after you see her get pushed around at the warehouse.

I'm very glad to hear he is moving on now :) I'd love for him to do something sci-fi next, he deserves credit, he's made an amazing trilogy but now he just wants to do something new.
 
I won't believe MGS4 is being made by someone other than him till it's done. He's gone back and forth on the directing issue so much that it could go either way. Given the positive response to MGS3, and his comments on how if fans wanted him to direct the next one he would, it seems like he'll be back in the seat.

Other games can wait. :)

This has been bothering me...

Why do I keep wanting to look around while in 1st person, w/ the right analog stick? I could've sworn you were allowed to use the right analog to look around, instead of the left in MGS2:SoL.

Did they change that?
 
Do game designers know that the DVD full excuse is BS? Simply go double-layer or make another single layer disc.

I really wanted to know what else was cut out of the game, but as usual, the interview was skimpy on the details.
