Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

Yeah, they should have released this sucker on DVD9
Not so sure about that. If there are skipping problems like people reported, DVD9 would make the matter worse, as it has slightly slower acces on PS2.

Has anyone played the game and not see the skipping in the first longer codec with the Boss?

Damn, I wish I had that Canadian Microplay or Videogameplus store where I live. Waiting until saturday to pick it up from EB is just wrong...

how is the frame rate? Any slowdowns?

Posted by dark10x:
No, it has been improved greatly. The framerate can still slow down a bit, but it is VERY minor in comparison to the demo. When I approached the bridge section with all of the enemies firing and chasing me down, the framerate barely skipped a beat (just a little bit of tearing at a couple points). It's much smoother overall, though still not perfect (just much closer).

Off topic: Are Smackdown VS Raw and GTA:SA DVD9 games then? My PS2 seems to have difficulty reading them

Neither of those two games are DVD9, and even with DVD9 games, the reading/skipping problems should not occur if your PS2 is in good working order. The only exception to this is Champions of Norrath, which is DVD9 and which has reading problems confirmed by everyone including developers. Just try some lens cleaning.

I know that there is no radar, but I have heard that there are gadgets that replace the radar. can someone just tell me what the gadgets are and if they work well?

At the beginning of the game Snake gets a few different scanning tools. First is the AP sensor which acts the same as in MGS2(vibrates when enemies get closer).

You also get a motion detector which pretty much acts as you would think. A mini-radar appears and shows enemies and animals that are moving in the vicinity, stationary objects don't display.

Finally you get a sonar, which requires you to push L3 to activate, but pretty much detects anything nearby. It does make noise though, when you send out a ping.

All of these consume battery power, which naturally recharges over time when not in use. Also the higher your stamina level, the faster your battery recharges strangely enough.

Oh and it's amazing how long it really has been since MGS2 first released. 3 years ago, this forum was lit up and in full flame mode when the secrets of Raiden and the sword were revealed in the MGS2 manual. Gawd that was hilarious!

thatnks for that Brandon. How long does the battery last for?

Although i like the sound of all that, I'm worried that the gameplay might be slower than the previous two games, is that the case or is the gameplay still quick?

EB Canada update - Gave them a call a moment ago, and they said they should be getting it tomorrow. I didn't bother calling BB and Future Shop as in my experience, they always get games at least a day after EB does.

Bought the game last night from EB.

Brief Impressions:

Hey Konami thanks for upfrading my PS2!! Seriously how the hell do these guys do it? The game looks gorgeous, better than SH 3 and up there with the best games this gen. It was a little weird getting used to the controls after not playing mgs2 for a while, but once i got used to them it was smooth. I'm really digging the increased difficulty so far, much harder than the initial levels in both mgs1 and mgs2. Can't wait to get home and play some more....and i have hl2, mp2 and halo 2 ;)

One thing has to be said....DAVID HAYTER MUST DIE! This guy has no range whatsoever. Snake is hearing some fucked up shit from boss and hayter still has that horrible
fake sounding voice. The man simply has no gravity when he speaks. Its the same thing no matter whats going :( Either give me the original voices or the option to mute the cutscenes.

Damn you Hayter haters :lol

I love that guy's Snake voice. Loved it in MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 (trailers) I really don't see much of a difference in his delivery between these games, and his fake gravely voice is the staplemark of the series to me! I agree however that it's weird to have all those russian guys like Volgin talking in clean american English - but I'd much rather listen to that, than Japanese VOs where every couple of seconds someone seemed to be saying something in Engrish...

The pace really depends almost completely on the gamer. If you really get into the stealth mechanics, surveying your surroundings, switching camo, and taking every precaution available, then yea the game can slow to a crawl.

But that isn't necessary. The battery actually lasts a good deal of time(it drains at different speeds dependent on the tools you use, sonar takes larger chunks with each use than the constant stream that motion and AP tick away). But you get several minutes of constant use before complete drainage I have found. With max stamina, it actually recharges surprisingly quick. No need to concern yourself about any serious downtime. I actually find myself sticking almost exclusively to the AP sensor lately, only switching to motion/sonar for hunting critters.

The surprisingly most beneficial change I find is the close-combat stuff. In past MGS games, grabbing an enemy can be a duanting task at times. Success meant grabbing the guard while the stick was neutral(to avoid flipping them) which was always a stressful experience trying to pinpoint exactly when to hit that square button; too far away and you risk alerting the guard/alarm while going through that whiffing animation, too close and you risk bumping into the enemy.

Now, grabbing fools, choking, interrogating, and creating meat shields is an entirely painless procedure. No bumbling guesstimation, just get close and hit the circle button at any angle(while equipping any weapon labeled CQC) and the fun begins. This not only makes stealth feel more fluid, but in alert status, you no longer feel so helpless. After being alerted in the intro area, I just ran from grunt to grunt slicing everyone's throats until they all lay dead. It actually feels dramatically overpowering, but it does help keep the pace moving. (I'm of the type that usually lets myself be killed the moment I'm spotted in past MGS games, if only to avoid the downtime in most situations)

This does bring up another concern, I didn't play very far beyond the demo areas last night, but I did test out the AI(normal difficulty) by just standing in the open jungle, shirtless with the Raiden mask on just to gauge the AI response to my bumbling stealth tactics. What I discovered is that the enemy takes a very cautious approach...slowly circling me and taking potshots every few seconds that does -extremely meager- damage. It took a couple clips to full on kill me, and I just had the controller sitting on the coffee table. Granted this was super early in the game where the AI is likely set to "gentle touch" but it bears mention.

Is it still true that with this sensor you don't get any other vibrations from the controller (like from shooting the gun, etc). I think that was the case in MGS2.

I've been saying this since I've first tried the demo - CQC completely changes the dynamics of the game if you decide to use it extensively. I can't even begin to understand how come some reviewers delegated it to status of not being very useful.

I too am worried that this feature might be too overpowering. Once you realize how much damage you can do with it, there's barely even need for weapons in the demo, much less stealth! You can just run from one guy to another, knocking them down by pressing O, and that'd be the end of them in couple of seconds. I wonder if later in the game this changes and if the damage you receive increases, otherwise, CQC would maybe make the game too easy.

Btw, I've noticed in the demo - to wake guards up from the unconsciousness, you can no longer lift and drop them like in MGS2. You have to stand next to them and do a CQC move kick (just keep pressing O untill Snake starts kicking them) That wakes them up after couple of kicks.

Still true.

Nah, you can still pick em up the old fashioned way as well. You just have to unequip your weapon to do it. Move em around a bit and they drop items as in past games. I didn't realize the kicking thing though, gonna have to try that out later.

I will add that I find the CQC interrogation almost as enjoyable as collecting dogtags in MGS2, gives more purpose to actually being stealthy, but the amount of repeat phrases gets kinda grating. Does this game even have dogtag hunting anymore?

I don't think there are dogtags anymore. I've heard there's something about frogs, though.

Oh, I know you can still pick them up, drag them around and drop them down - but it wont wake them up, no matter how many times you lift and drop them!

Damn, I can't wait to get home and play this again tonight. I'm really pumped for more.

I did try out that Snake VS Monkey thing, BTW. That is actually pretty damn funny, I gotta admit. The phrases and dialog are all very Ape Escape and the references to all of the Ape Escape characters is rather comical (and they actually renamed Hikaru to Jimmy, which was an Ubisoft change). Good stuff...

Ha ha, no, you don't actually do that. That mode works just like SaruGetchu/Ape Escape. You have a cartoony looking gun, and when you shoot them, they get knocked out briefly. You simply run over them to collect each one and Snake yells stuff like "You're mine!" and other similar tag lines from the game. It's quite fun, though, and obviously integrates the stealth mechanics of MGS into the gameplay.

Is there a spoiler about the story in the manual (like there was in MGS2)?

I wasn't excited at first about this game although I love MGS but I'm starting to get nervous about it, EB will only have it tomorrow...

My gf is gonna hate me for that. Since I overplayed MGS2 in an entire night (which I usually never do), she hates everything related to MGS... which sucks because it's one of my favorite series. :D

EDIT: F*** that! We just received our review copy! Looks like I'm gonna play tonight!

Yay!

Did you know?!
..that Snake on the Metal Gear cover is based off Kyle Reese from Terminator?

kylereeseandsolidsnake.png

I remember Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 'artwork' was a complete ripoff of several movie scenes and actors. Big Boss for example was a carbon copy of Sean Connery, and I know there's more.

Does anyone have any new impressions from the game? Not spoilers, just general stuff like what's the difficulty level like, and such.

Konami based a lot of their old covers on 80's action movies. Contra is another example, taken from Predator.

I got the game today, so far so great, I already reached the part where the actual game begins, and I was beginning to wonder why there was no intro when I first booted it up and began playing.

The Snake Eater intro we saw a while back with the snake skeletons gets unlocked for the main title screen when you reach the part of the game where it plays, pretty cool
.

I don't remember if this was in SOL. but when you get affected or hit by a stun grenade you partially lose your hearing for a bit. I was under a bed in First Person mode when it happened so I'm not sure if it happens in regular overhead, third person camera.

The only thing that bugs me so far is the serious lack of any sort of accents for certain characters. This is the Soviet Union and there's not a single russian sounding person so far.

Also, reading the manual, it seems like you can use a
fork
to attack enemies, how awesome is that.

Regarding the Snake Eater Theme/Montage...
You can also manipulate the Snake Eater Theme/Montage by using the Left & Right Analogue sticks that controls the movement and speed of the developer's names as they scroll across the screen as well as other effects like the Para-Jumpers. Pressing R1 causes a whisper of "Snake Eater" too but I don't what I did or how to get it back but I did something that changed all the developer's names from English to Japanese.. :lol

After I
die, the letters in SNAKE IS DEAD redraw themselves as TIME PARADOX.
What does that mean? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!

Ever seen Back to the Future? What would happen is George McFly died in 1955?

Yeah, I love the interactive intro. I just experimented with it, you must have pushed L3. That changes it from English then to what I assume is Korean, then possibly Russian, and then just snakes.

Well I got it today, haven't had time to play it much yet. Also, Halo 2 Live is the devil...sucking away time from other worth games.

BTW, does it make a difference at the start when it says:

"never played MGS before"

"loved MGS1"

"loved MGS2"

I think "never played MGS" and "Loved MGS2" add a lot more of tutorials, and explanations.

I heard someone say that some of the cutscenes like the one where....
Major Zero explains the Cuba incident at the beginning of the game are shorter

Can't say if it's true or not, I started to play on Normal and "Loved MGS2" modes.

So for those that have passed the game or at least gotten close... can you just answer me one simple question...

Does this game answer any of the questions or continue on from where MGS2 left off? Do we get to know more about the patriots or anything else in MGS2.

Without spoiling too much, let me know!

PREQUEL

It'd imagine it'll fill in some of the questions via backstory, but nothing picks up from where MGS2 left off.

I love the little in-jokes.

"That's a revolver technique"

"This fox is still a couple steps ahead of the hounds."

:lol

I played some of the monkey game and in it Snake tells Tom that he should send Sam or Gabe for the mission instead. :lol

Thanks for that, I also noticed you could manipulate the title screen in a similar way by...
pressing R1 to speed up the Snake/CQC animation and pressing L3 or moving the Right Analogue stick to change the colors. L1 zooms in on the animation while the Left Analogue stick moves the background around. I love this attention to detail! :D

I like the title screen. Animation is awesome, I could watch it all day :P

Anyone notice any cameos from other Kojima games? All I've seen so far is a
model of a 'runner'/mech from Zone of the Enders

The remixed Metal Gear Solid theme played during the scene was pretty sweet too

Wow. 5 hours. This game is fantastic. GOTY so far, baby. It's like sex on a disk.

Me too.
Two in a row which is kinda cool.

Right now I'm kind of regretting not pre-ordering. I'll never forgive myself if every copy is accounted for. :\

Chances are though that I'll walk into EB or Future Shop tomorrow and find it no problem.

I didn't pre-order; picked the game up on Wed. from one of the smaller EB stores here in town, and even they had TONS of them ready to sell.

I picked it up at We Got Games in Shoppers World Brampton...they don't really do pre-ordering, so it's never a big deal getting games on release from them. Unlike EB, with the "you shoulda pre-ordered!" BS.
