Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

I really can't stand it now...

There are 25 000 enemis that pop up when alert is activated but they do little damage! Since you cannot take them all out, it takes forever to die.

I'm still at the red base and trying to figure out how I will be able to do it.

I hope I'm saying this because I am tired but I don't like it. And the camera angles are crap, the fences and trees are blocking everything.

Somehow the GS score seems justified.

I do think it's pretty funny that Snake can't take his eyes off EVA's cleavage though. The sad part is, neither can I.

Me too. =(

It took me a while to realize it, but you can just use the fake-death pill whenever you want to suicide. Then pick continue from the GO screen. Nice and fast.

The only rant I really have at this point are the VA's, as others have mentioned. They could have used a leftover Russian grunt from MGS2 and it would have sounded better than the hack they got to do Ocelot.

Does Ocelot still sound like an american highschool student? :(

Yeah, but it makes sense within the game.

Snake is speaking Russian when he talks to Ocelot, Sokolov, and the others. Ocelot doesn't have the accent because he isn't trying to speak English. They throw it out pretty fast, so some people might have missed it. Sokolov tells Snake that he speaks very good Russian when they first meet. It's sorta dumb, but it also makes sense. We didn't get the same sounding Ocelot because he is now speaking fluent Russian, not trying to speak English. Of course the player hears it all as English.

And my Metal Gear Solid skills must have been weak on Wednesday. That red base section took me almost an hour. I wanted to do it without being seen or killing anyone. I just kept on messing up. Some of my old tricks from MGS2 don't work on these guys... :(

This is going to be my personal GOTY. It's just been too much fun so far. I haven't so much as looked at another game since Wednesday. SNAKE EATER!

This is stupid: They should have kept the dialogue in russian when people actually speaks russian, with subtitles...

"Kept"? That seems to imply that they had Russian dialog to begin with. I'm not so sure it would have been an easy task to record that much Russian dialog.

Did you play the demo? If not, that's kinda why...

I didn't care much for the demo at first either. It takes some adjusting before it starts to feel right again. You need to approach the game a bit differently, but once you figure it out, it feels as good as it ever did...

The red base, is the same location as the ending location from the demo, right? That part was a bit difficult first time I played the demo, but later on you realize that you can just run from one guy to another and smack them down with circle button, until they are all dead. Considering how little damage their weapons are doing, you only have to watch out for the granades. You definitely have to know your way around if you don't want to be seen, but there are at least two particular routes where you can go that makes the job very easy. Overall, that location is pretty damn easy to me now.

Btw, that location is great to have fun throwing granades at them, and watch them run for cover or dive onto the ground, only to be blown away a second later (well, some of them at least) :P

Oh and yeah, some of the old tricks don't work. The guys are a lot smarter this time. They can see and hear you a lot better for example. If you are sneaking behind, make sure to use D-pad when you get close behind the guards.

Is anyone playing the game on Hard difficulty, and what are the differences? Are their weapons doing more damage? Are the boss fights a lot more difficult (I've heard a second boss fight is very easy, from the IGN preview)?

"Kept" as in "Kojima's idea was that they speak russian in that part of the story", but they don't. I hate when foreigners in movies suddenly speaks english like it was there first language!

I will have to try that next, thanks :)

I have to admit, my MGS skills have gotten rusty and the outside environments threw me off a bit at first but now it's all coming back to me. I'm loving this game... i still can't believe the PS2 is doing these graphics. Good god! Loving the story so far too.

Agreed. Not having a radar tell you exactly what all enemy lines of sight are will take quite a bit of getting used to, but the gameplay and cinematics are as good as ever. I'm only about 2 hours in, but yeah
that cutscene with ocelot, very, very cool. Watching ocelot kill that guy by ricocheting a bullet off of a metal beam, awesome. Watching snake take out 5 guys who have him surrounded and then kick ocelot's ass.. even better

Oh, and to the guy who can't get past the base at the beginning
you can crawl under the base, there are a few crawl holes around the outside. The soldiers won't follow you in.

Another review: GamePro - 5/5

Oh, and to the guy who can't get past the base at the beginning
You can also
get through crawling by the fence on the south of the ruined base, there's some tall grass there. Makes it pretty easy to get all the way to the east

So when they are speaking English, they are actually speaking in Russian? That's what I thought but it kinda confused me. I don't know why they even bother including that line...makes the production value cheaper or something

Yeah, there's one camoflage available so far, with more to come. Hopefully the'll put one of those I sent for the competition, since I didn't get selected to be among the four camos included on the game disc :(

Canada update:
EB stores now have the game, but he immediatelly asked me if I've preordered, which means that the number of copies they got could be small. I have preordered, and my wife is now on the way there to get the game, and the LE guide if they have it. She'll also ask about the price matching with Best Buy, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm in Ontario. The game is now in my wife's hands. They don't have the LE guide yet, but will have it in couple of days. They wouldn't do a price match as "that would be lower than the price they bought the game for" What kind of logic is that? Don't they actually have to pricematch by their store's policy? In any case, the game was only $60 in the store, so I won't bother getting it in BB now. I just wanna get home, open it and play it.

You are saying that the game is priced 59.99$ CDN at EB Games?

Yep, that's what she just told me. If it was 70, I would probably return it and get one from BB, but this way the difference is too small to bother. BB store is really far away from where I usually commute.

Picked up my copy today.
Best Buy stores had bunch of copies... and you can use $5 off coupon from that free "Holiday Video Games Buyer's Guide". Or you can always use Gamer's Gift Card coupon.

:lol

Man, Ocelot just can't catch a break.

On the first encounter with Snake, he get's whooped and scolded by Snake for being cocky and using a handgun. Now I just met with him again, this time he has a fancy looking revolver and again Snake scolds him telling him that the fancy engravings the revolver has all over will not favor his aim or technique, and basically punks him out cause Ocelot forgot to load bullets into the revolver. That leads to Eva putting the hurt on him.

What a puny bitch.

Now after going through a section where you have to
crawl under electrified barbwire fences, and use the mine locator to avoid claymores, I had to put a poor guard dog down with a single headshot and arrived at another small base where there's a chopper

how large are the areas so far? and how much of the game has anyone completed?

The areas are surprisingly large in some places (like the various areas of the jungle or mountain for example) and then some can be quite small when they're simply just a path from one section to the next. So far, I've beaten The End and on my way to the mountain summit.

I'll say this for The End battle that I didn't read in any reviews...
Watch out for the sneaky old bastard. He'll sneak up on you sometimes when you're trying to find him via FPV or the scope of the sniper rifle. If he manages to sneak up on you, he'll put a Tranq.Dart into your head triggering a cutscene where you wake up quite a few areas back in the Lab....

All i have to say is that the zoom feature in cutscenes is the best thing ever created. Man, that cutscene with EVA was hilarioius :lol :lol

Either this game is really hard or i just suck, because i tried it on hard my first try and i got killed so many times i had to start over on medium. Also, CQC is godly. The technique when Snake grabs the guy by the head and throws him down, knocking him unconcious is just sick. Ive cleared a whole room, with about 20 guys in it, just using that technique. I really should work on my sneaking and shooting ability though since i suck at them. But damn, CQC just rules to much

From the begining of the game...

is there any way to keep the gun that's underneath the bridge? I can get down there but I can't get back up

OK, here's couple of questions for you:
- Did you play MGS1 and MGS2, and how would you compare difficulty level on MGS3/Hard to MGS2/Hard?
- Since you've figured out that you can blast through those poor souls by using CQC, how come you've been dying so much when playing on the hard level?

Damn, this
The End
boss battle is pissing me off. 45 minutes and I still haven't beaten it

lol I killed his parrot and now he's crying about it

and what the hell is up with all these bosses exploding when they die?

Wario:
apparently, if you spam the sonar, he'll give away his position, and you can kill him in under 10 minutes...or so I heard.

Wario, so are you having those problems on a Normal difficulty level? Seriously, can someone break it down and say if the game is difficult enough on normal, for someone who played MGS2 a lot, and how is hard difficulty different?

It's difficult if you relied on the radar all the time in the first two MGS's. It seems more difficult to get out of alert mode once you get caught. Haven't played hard mode yet, but I think playing on normal first is good idea unless you can breeze through MGS2 without a radar

It's just that once you get caught, there aren't really many places to hide at all. But you can take a lot of hits before dying

I have played mgs1 and mgs2 and i beat mgs2 on hard. the thing is that i played on hard first and didnt realize that CQC ruled so much. I tried to sneak my way past or shoot the guys while playing on hard, which didnt work out to well because when there are a ton of guys, aiming in first person mode gets tricky. Guess im not very accurate, plus those guys can take a ton of shots. You pretty much need a heart or head shot to kill them it seems like.

A few reasons why Hard on mgs3 is a lot harder than hard on mgs2 is because that the Alert does not shut off when you change areas. Also, i was not used to the fact the enemies can see you from really far on away and can hear you a lot easier.

So far, the game seems dificult enough to me on normal, though i was never an expert at mgs(never beat mgs2 on extreme),

Yea, i agree with Wario. I relied on radar in previous mgs games, so thats one of the reasons why its difficult. Also, like Wario, its hard to find a hiding spot once the alert goes off because their arent many places to hide and the bad guys are running all over the place with great vision and hearing.

One more thing, so far ive beaten 3 boses on the normal setting and the have given me a challenge. I think they could be a bit harder because i havent died on a boss yet, though i got close each time. However, for me, i think that the bosses on hard would be way too hard for me on my first play through and would just end up frustraiting me. Keep in mind i havent fought a boss on hard. Its just a feeling i got while playing hard

Hint: When enemies surround you, jump into them and knock them down. Run into the next area and you will shave about 20-30 seconds off of the timer.

Just got it. Played about 30 minutes.

So far it's pretty shitty. The camera is crap, and the codec conversations are already getting on my nerves.

That's funny, considering the first 30 minutes is basically the introduction

There's alot less codec conversations too, compared to past MGS titles

It's even funnier when people complain how codec conversations get on their nerves. Are some folks playing on PS2 controllers that lack the X button?

No, I PLAYED 30 minutes.

I watched for equally as long, if not longer.

I laughed at a very bizarre conversation about Godzilla. I rolled my eyes at a drawn out conversation between (spoiler) and Snake.

Then I killed some alligators, and messed around with some guards. I got bored and turned it off.

Well, the game apparently starts out very slow so...

Uh oh! Caught! :lol

I just bought MGS3. But after reading Docpans negative impressions I don't think I can play this game anymore....

:lol Docpan is a douche.

This calls for a ban.

B. Trolling

Trolling is considered to be the act of purposely being disingenuous to an active discussion. Negative commentary on given topics is by no means disallowed; however, such comments should attempt to be substantiated. No matter your supposed intent, if the forum administrators perceive you as a troll making unsubstantiated comments in an attempt to provoke the forum body, actions may be taken by the administrators

I dunno if I would even consider that a real troll. IF anything, he should be banned for bringing such a weak troll.

The first rule of trolling is to not make any previous statements which give the people you are trolling counter ammunition!

He blew rule one. Banneded it should be.
