Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

Normal is pretty easy, I got through the game without using Life Medicines. In fact, I refused to. Since you already have a regenerating life bar, it seemed pretty cheap. :P I wish I had started on hard mode. I'll remember that for MGS4.

Thanks, I will start on hard.

Beat Ace Combat V on hard as well, very satisfying.

in the particular sentence you mention, i like the two uses of "two."

The sentence struck me as off also, but that could be from the delivery (I don't think there was a pause to reflect the comma).

Though if you really want to nitpick, in Belfast's post, there are three uses of the sound - II, to, two, which is really pushing things :lol

so i finally started playing yesterday. if kojima ever wanted to make a james bond movie or game and take the license from EA he'd have my vote. hey!! are you listening UA?
evreything about this game oozes quality (and frogs) cutscenes are kinda boring so far (except the one were snake falls into the river and volgin nukes the abandoned factory)
but i'm only three hours into the game and i just beat ocelot's guards.

i may be rusty cause those guys gave me all sorts of troubles (they are pretty good fighters in their own right) and the camera angles dont help much. i wouldnt wanta full over the shoulder camera but maybe something that's not so hindering mayhaps?

about the characters:
why is naked snake in an area were it was just nuked a week ago? how's he gonna have kids?
and i guess we know were solid snake got his taste for the ladies. (talk about drooling funbags :D ) i had to watch that cutscene a couple of times. :lol

ocelot is young, he's real good, but he's a cocky young punk. but i guess snake is impressed enough that he'll hire him in the future.

the boss is my kind of lady though. a sweet voice and she can kick my ass, but doesnt the manual say that snake developed CQC along with her/ just how good is this lady?

HEY HEY LBJ!!! HOW MANY SNAKES DID YOU NUKE TODAY?

major zero and para-medic are cool so far and they let me do my job without getting in the way. i think i'll try to talk to paramedic more though. signit i havent talked to yet.

EVA...... never mind...... :D

the cobra unit: havent encountered any yet but they look like trouble. and fun.

sokolov may be the first hostage in metal gera history and wasnt a complete idiot (hey, where those ninja skills he was trying to break out? :lol :) )

the graphics....... wooowe wooo!!! so nice, i would go so far as to say that they are better than halo's in their own way. damn!!!

the story i'll comment on later cause i havent gotten into it.

as for gameplay i love it so far. got killed by a croc though. :(
i wish though that there would have been a way to not have to pause the game in order to perform field surgery on myself. are tere any items that let me heal like the c-rations from metal gear solid 1-2?
can anyone teach me the basics of CQC? or more specifically, how do i sneak up close to a guy by using the stalk technique? wasnt that a big feature form this game? what do i have to do exactly?

well, that's all for now. i'm three hours into the game, how long before i fight my first boss fight?

I just use the D-pad when sneaking up behind a guard.

drohne said:
you can crawl through a hole in the wall. it's obscured in a patch of grass. there's probably some way to get the door open from the outside -- one of the guards vaguely alluded to it when i interrogated him -- but i don't know what it is.
You can knock on the door. :D

So that's what the life medicine's used for. :( The only meds I used were for digestion when eva or snake would eat rotten food.

Damn great game I just picked it up yesterday and I can't stop playing it even though i'm rusty. Does everyone restart there mission everytime snake gets spotted or is that just me? I've been stuck at the red brick warehouse for awhile now and its quite fustrating but very fun!

i think i'm going to start a new game going for all the frogs today...

i saw one in the most ridiculous place,
during the freakin motorcycle chase at the end!! how the fuck am i supposed to shoot that!!?!??

Just remember that you have use the D-Pad to sneak around not the analog control.

I finished the game not knowing about it.
Quite frustrating...

Pretty crazy that they'd hide the sneak controls like that :p Good thing I'm not too far into the game, as I didn't know about that and I'll start using it. Thanks.

Poody said:

a couple times i just ran away until i triggered a cutscene when i got spotted. then i'd go back and check to see if i missed anything.

evil solrac v3.0 said:
doh, now i find out. thanks.do i have to interrogate every guard to get the special radio frequencies or can i input them if i find them by other means?

You're free to manually input frequencies (just press left or right), and regardless of whether you interrogate or not, you still have to input it yourself (the game doesn't remember bonus frequencies you haven't used just because a guard blurted it out)

Evil Solrac:
why is naked snake in an area were it was just nuked a week ago? how's he gonna have kids?

In one of the radio conversations Snake explains that he had already been exposed to nuclear radiation before. He was involved in the "Bravo Shot" nuclear test at Bikini Atoll, the single largest nuclear test that the U.S. conducted.

Yeah, cleverly hidden away in the manual! ;)

You guys do know that they show you techniques in the 'special' menu in the main menu? Similiar to MGS2's demo

I can't speak for him, but a lot of renters have to go without the manual. I know first-hand Hollywood Video's control summary on the back of the rental box was pretty sparse.

But what Wario suggested is the perfect way to brush up.

Yeah, I just remembered I learned about it in the "special" menu as well. I also learned that you can roll over certain objects, like logs, in there. Proved to be quite useful.

Loved every minute of mgs3 but i have one thing to say kojima....

Fix the god damn control!!!!! I dont know about you guys but there has to be a more intuitive way to control Snake. You know how many times he wouldn't crawl in the direction i wanted him to, Having no idea which direction i was facing in first person view, crawling when i wanted to run, and just overall god damn cumbersome. I'ts gets easier but i just kojima needs to rethink the whole system for the next game.

agreed, the control in the mgs series needs major reworking - sometimes it's camera dependent, sometimes it's based on snake's pov. consistency is needed.

Ok, just beat The Fear. What an awesome battle, but the camera and controls need to be cleaned up for the next Metal Gear. He jumps so high on those trees you gotta battle with the camera to try and find his position! Good fun though!

Got to the 2nd intro sort of speak, not sure whats going on but i have trouble getting "into" it, its mainly the factory that turned me off, fighting against the controls and camera when sliding along the wall, then for god knows what reason snakes starts to crawl, lowering the camo way too low and also because the damn level left no room to experiment, always some goddamn alert and no hiding places (outside of the roof of course).

I too have difficulty with "crawling when I want to run". That problem has haunted me in every Metal Gear Solid release. I'm not sure how they could fix this, though, since it's logical that the moves are mapped to the same button. Maybe they need to improve the response time? The animations take a bit too long perhaps...

That's the only complaint I can really level at the controls.

A third-person camera system that still "snapped" to helpful perspectives when you lean on walls is what the series needs most, though, imho.

I've never really had a complaint about MGS controls, although from my perspective Splinter Cell style setups are terrible, so ymmv.

For those who have beat the game, this theory passing the rounds on Gamefaqs suddenly makes far too much sense:

Ocelot being the missing child of The Boss. Somewhat similar appearance, they seem to be weirdly agreeable with each other, and with The Sorrow being the father, it seems likely that Ocelot would be able to communicate with the dead, which would do a lot for explaining the whole Liquid-arm thing in MGS2...

Hmm...

i agree, it makes a lot of sense. The ages match up too because The Boss said she gave birth 20 years ago, and Ocelot should be about 20 years old now. If i remember correctly the picture of her son(their was a picture right?) looked like Ocelot too. Plus it explains why Liquids arm took over Ocelot, because his father, The Sorrow, was powerful in ESP and as a medium.

This is confirmed by the casting call with character descriptions, found earlier in the thread.

Go figure, you're right. I could have sworn I've gone through the entire thread but somehow have never seen that page before. -_-; (
Maybe it's just me, but this seemed like such an important bit of information I'm kind of surprised Kojima didn't do something more to set it in stone during the game. The endgame phone conversation doesn't have quite the same impact. Just nitpicking though - I have to say it's pretty cool of Kojima to actually have a reasoning behind the arm thing
)

The casting call is interesting but has a weird glitch (
VR missions? huh?
)

Ahh, shit! I gotta take a break from this game!

Was fighting The End and something weird happened! I had 3/4 of his energy gone, and like an hour invested in this damn fight, when out of nowhere in a prone position not moving with 90 precent camo index and full health I took a shot and got thrown back in jail! He said it wasn't my time to go yet or something like that! WTF!

That happened to me twice. Until I killed his fucking bird.

Sometimes he turns into a real sneaky bastard, get's up, walks up behind you (you can hear some muffled footsteps right then) and plugs you in the back of the head with his tranquilizer rifle. It can be fairly annoying when he telegraphs what to do from a long way away, but usually it only happens when you get caught looking in the wrong place for too long.

Killing the parrot didn't seem to change his sneaking tendency for me. In any case, when you come back from the jail his health and stamina are just as you left it - the battle continues.

Yah it's a big improvement over Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday.

Way to Fall is also a great song.

Yeah, it's awesome too, I downloaded it yesterday, along with the Snake Eater single. Man, when
the instrumental version starts during The Boss fight, I got such an awesome "feeling". That was genius of Kojima to use Snake Eater as the countdown.
This truly is one of the best games ever made. Fuck Halo 2, Half Life 2 and San Andreas.

Hehe, that happened to me once during the fight.
Don't fret, his life bar doesn't regenerate, the fight will resume as if nothing had happened.

The only thing I dislike about this game is that you can't change the difficulty when you restart a finished game. I really don't like the way MGS1 handled that, and I don't like it in MGS3. I understand the reasoning though.
The Patriot turns Snake into a motherfucking tank. Wouldn't be too fair to get while playing easy and then blow through extreme with it.
There are some cool, little changes during a second playthrough, like new semi-cutscenes:
When you first get to the bridge area in Virtuous Mission, a little scene plays out where Snake notices that there's a beehive above the soldiers. He looks into the camera and smirks.
Funny shit. :P

Did anyone else notice that in the title screen
Snake's wearing an eyepatch when
you have a finished game in your memory card?

The only "disappointment" I have with the game is that I read somewhere(here or IGN) that there would be "Snake Tales"-like extra missions in MGS3. What a bunch of bullshit. :P

First post here (God Help Me) but re: Boss and Ocelot:

Am I the only person who got the codec conversation from either SIGINT or EVA (can't remember) that described how Ocelot was born on battlefield and afterward his mother had a scar shaped like a snake. Considering what happens in the finale I can't imagine why Boss and Ocelot's relationship is even speculation- those two pieces of the game confirmed it without a doubt in my mind.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned in the thread, I have been carefully reading it to avoid spoilers...

Anyways, about The End
Once when I was fighting him the perspective changed and I was looking through his scope at Snake? What causes that? Is it just one of his moves?

edit: and I am really liking the gameplay-cutscenes ratio so far (just got to Grozny Grad or whatever). I am glad they kept the cutscene nubmers down, but whenever a cutscene does happen, they seem to go on forever. Atleast they are entertaining and not codec chatter. The motion capture stuff is really cool. Lipsynchs could have been better....but not many games get that to look natural.

I never got that codec conversation, nor have i heard that anyone has gotten it. However if it is true that does proof it. Do you remember when you got the conversation? Like after what event?

I'd love to hear where in the game you found that conversation, because it obviously never happened for me. I don't recall Eva or Sigint ever talking about Ocelot.

Jett: Actually, the MGS3 does replays kind of weird:
-Continue from clear file: stuck at same difficulty but with all camo returning
-Start a new game after clear: difficulty selection, but you only start with the last camo you had equipped from the previous complete game (in addition to whatever default camo's you normally get)

I'm still trying to figure out how the Spirit camo supposedly cuts out footstep sounds, because I can certainly hear it...maybe I'm missing some other catch about it.

It was probably a conversation you had with Sigint. I only spoke with him twice the entire game, so I never heard it.

Didn't happen to me, and I fought him for nearly two hours. Pretty freaking cool, though.

Just
a warning that The End can see you and is very nearly ready to shoot. You still have complete character control and can back out of range (or hide behind something). It generally only happens when The End needs some time to aim (ie: he sees you, but your camo index is high).

Happened to me twice.
The first time, he sniped me and I woke up in the cell. The second time I managed to dodge his shot and ran to cover. I think this happens when you try to be sneaky and wait for his Z's.

Eh...I just started a new game on hard mode and I didn't get shit, man. I had the spirit camo on when I finished the game, cause it's just so damn cool looking. I've read that the
sneaking suit
is lying around in the game. I NEED to get my hands on that.
