Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

Eh...I just started a new game on hard mode and I didn't get shit, man. I had the spirit camo on when I finished the game, cause it's just so damn cool looking. I've read that the
sneaking suit
is lying around in the game. I NEED to get my hands on that.

Hrm. It's possible that the game doesn't keep track of the change, so maybe it has to be while the PS2 is still on after beating the game? Kinda halfassed implementation, especially since I don't relish the idea of trying to beat the final boss again to test this out.

The suit you're looking for is found in
Major Raiden's locker when you come back to take out the fuel tanks. Black version of The Boss's gear with 50% damage and reduced stamina use.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Spirit camo supposedly cuts out footstep sounds, because I can certainly hear it...maybe I'm missing some other catch about it.
You can still hear your own footsteps, but guards can't. So they say - I haven't tried it that much.

If you want to hear about Ocelot from Eva, call her right after the fight with him. If she starts repeating directions call someone else then call her again and she should say it (You may have to it repeat this alot if you never talked to her before as its one of the last things she talks about).
Listen for when Snake asks how Ocelot made Major of a elite unit so quickly, as thats the one that mentions his parents.

Just finished the game. Took me a bit over 26 hours. Whew. Now I can sleep again.

I had an awesome time with the game. Definetly one of the best games I've played.

But.... I'm a little surprised by all the gushing I've been reading here....

I guess I really have only one gripe though, one very big gripe. Ok. Almost everyone here has commented on the awesome boss battles. All the reviews I've read have gone on and on about them. And yes the majority of them were very good. But I absolutely could NOT stand having to go into the sub-menu all the freakin time to cure myself. Having that in the boss battles was a horrible idea. No, it did not ruin any of the boss battles, but it sure slowed down a couple of them. In the battle with Volgin I might have spent more time in the menu than I did fighting him (it took me several times to figure out how to beat him, so I'm combining all the time I spent in that battle). But it just broke up the flow way too much for my liking.
I would get rolling and having a great time in the battle and then I would have to stop and go into a menu screen. Menu screens are not exciting.

But other than that I really liked the game. An amazing experience for sure. The camo turned out way cooler than I thought it was going to. The hunting part of the game was cool. It could have been utilized better though. I only had to actually look for food at one part of the game. The boss battles were pretty outstanding. And yes, I do agree that "The End" was pretty cool. I don't know why anyone would need two hours to finish it though. I rolled through that one pretty quick.

But yeah. Awesome game. Now I only have 20 more to complete. :D

You might not need to heal the moment you're injured unless poisoned or you have a tranq in you. I never really used cure much in battle except the beginning of The Fear and The End battle, just wait until the fights over or your injuries are so numerous you're life is mostly red and can't heal (and by that time you would probably be dead anyway).

Shit (More The End tales for me)! :lol

Ok I'm heading back to fight him again! I have him almost dead. I was crawling and looking around using my direction microphone. I keep crawling and hear his voice, so I bust out the directional microphone again putting me in first person. IT'S REALLY LOUD and I can't see him so I'm like wtf. I take it off and it goes back to third person HE IS BEHIND ME AND HOLDS ME UP! :lol :( :( He shoots me from behind and I get thrown back in the cell! :lol

Yup that's it. It was so obvious from that codec conversation I kept waiting for it to be brought up in a cinematic. Then during the finale, I was like "okay here's the revelation...okay maybe not," then in the traditional epilogue voiceover- "okay maybe now they'll mention it, nope still no go." Pretty bizarre omission unless its something Kojima ultimately had second thoughts on but forgot to remove all of the references.

Re: SIGINIT (Finale Spoiler):
It mentions that SIGINT went on to join DARPA. I'm guessing it turns out that he's the DARPA chief from MGS 1.
.

Woo, victory is mine! One good blast deserves another! :lol

On my way back I ran into him by accident. I think he was trying to sneak up on me again! :lol Nailed him with my shotgun which left him with like a tiny sliver of health. He threw a flashbang grenade to try and blind me and took off! Turned on my thermal goggles, and followed him up the cliff he went to try and snipe me! Went into the prone position at the top and snuck right behind him, dealing a killing blow to his back with my shotgun!

After watching some MGS3 trailers, I've noticed something:

The game is actually lip-synched(not perfectly, like Jak3, but much much better than what you get in the american version) to the japanese dialogue(unlike MGS2 which was lip-synched to nothing). Kojima should've made that effort on the english release too, considering it always outsells the japanese verison by a hue margin. :\

Also, The Boss's and Snake's japanese voice actors are much better. :P

I just went out and picked up Snake Eater...That means at the moment, I'm playing...

Halo 2
Half-Life 2
Metroid Prime 2
Baten Kaitos
MGS3: Snake Eater

Quite a list, with more games to review on their way...Lots of gaming for me.

Huh? I thought it just said he want on to develop ARPANET (which is basically the first version of the internet) Does it really say he joined DARPA? I don't remember it saying that.

Ohh nevermind...

I understand where you're coming from, it is cumbersome to have to go into the survival viewer to access the Cure menu. But personally it seemed to me that most of the game's "critical" wounds didn't do all that much damage and there wasn't that much urgency to patch them up immediately. The End's tranqualizer bullet, The Fear's Poison arrows, and The Pain's bullet bees ( :lol ) are the only wounds I can think off that needed urgent attention.

I don't know how you fought Volgin but after the first couple of times he wailed on me I learned to keep my distance. :)

Also, The Boss's and Snake's japanese voice actors are much better. :P

But based on the trailers I doubt most of the other characters would've sounded better in Japanese. Volgin and EVA's japanese voices in particular were really starting to irritate me (Volgin's actor sounded like he had marbles in his mouth!).

It's interesting to hear the differences between the US and JPN releases but I don't think I'd make a trade.

So you didnt really need to cure right away??? :lol I'm an idiot. I was so stressed that I had to do it right away. Well that changes things a bit then.

I'm going up the mountain right now, cool little sequence occured. Little touches like these are what make Kojima games great!

Ok, so I taket he first turn around the mountain and take out the first soldier with my knife! I then proceed to snipe the next two soliders in view. I did this 'cause I saw a little hole behind me in the mountain I can crawl through. So the area is on alert right now and the enemy soldiers can't find me. I take that opening through the mountain and I crawl up higher. Right next to the opening on top looking down is a solider iwth a rocket launcher (!!!). So I take out the soldier with my gun and go in hiding. All of a sudden an eagle flies down and starts eating the dead soldiers body! I'm gonna crawl out and see if I can get some eagle food to eat! :D

It's something I always thought would make sense to do for an american title (reanimating the lip sync) but every good example I can think of sticks to the anime road of adjusting spoken dialogue so it has similar spacing (ie: if they say something long there, make sure the english isn't two words).

The process doesn't always work (there are a few bits where Snake keeps talking and no voice comes out), but on the whole it's a fast way to get things done. Proper sync may become more of an option in the future, though, as polycounts continue to rise and the facial details can't be overlooked so easily.

Mrbob:
Eagle? Are you sure that wasn't a Vulture?

Truelize: Yeah, no point in curing stuff right away unless you need to hide for awhile, since generally all it does is lock off a portion of your current/max health. Hell, cuts tend to heal themselves given enough time. The only fight I needed to cure during was the last one, mainly because of the cheap-shot tactics being used on me over and over...-_-;

Finally, spinning Snake around is the best food poisoning cure ever :lol

Just got done fighting an actual boss instead of letting cgi do it. I actually ran out of pistol bullets
during the duel with ocelot so i finished him off with an ak. Even though it wasn't honorary does it matter?

This is so odd!

So I'm in this Japanese supermarket and I come across "Calorie Mate"!

Yeah, it's awesome too, I downloaded it yesterday, along with the Snake Eater single. Man, when
the instrumental version starts during The Boss fight, I got such an awesome "feeling". That was genius of Kojima to use Snake Eater as the countdown.
This truly is one of the best games ever made. Fuck Halo 2, Half Life 2 and San Andreas.

There's also an Alert version of the Snake Eater theme. I noticed it once i'd finnaly gotten hidden and started listening to the music a bit more. That definetly needs to be on the soundtrack.

Another cool time it plays:
When you're climbing up the big ladder and the acapella version of it comes on. It seems Kojima realised how good the song was because he never used the other 2 vocal themes in the previous games as much as he used this one.

Hah! Looks like there is one big benefit to choosing "I love MGS2" at the beginning!

After you take down Raikov, you can use the Raiden mask and you look just like him! All the soldiers stopping and saluting me! :lol

ocelot

There are some cool, little changes during a second playthrough, like new semi-cutscenes:
When you first get to the bridge area in Virtuous Mission, a little scene plays out where Snake notices that there's a beehive above the soldiers. He looks into the camera and smirks.
Funny shit. :P

That's not a new cutscene, at least not for me. It happened during my first playthrough...and it happened again when I started a new game (without even finishing my first playthrough).

Oh no :(
During the fight with The End i accidentally
killed his parrot. I don't know if anyone did this, but I felt so bad...he went on saying "oh no, look what have you done ! you killed her ! you went too far, i'll get you for this! ". Now, i have a macaw (you know, the blue and yellow one) myself and i can imagine how it feels; i wanted to go up to him and say i'm sorry, and hug him, and cry with him. But apparently you cannot do that, so, even if we had been fighting for around 40 mins and i had menaged to lower his health to less than half, i just had to suicide and restart the fight.
Yeah, i know it's a friggin' videogame, but the thought of having killed someone's beloved pet would have haunted me down.
Does The End death cutscene involve his parrot ? if so it would be interesting to see how it would have changed

Oh well.

The End's parrot lands on him when he dies. If you killed his parrot then the parrot's spirit/ghost lands on him instead. :lol
Anyway, I killed his parrot too... and then I ate him/her. :lol

Nah, you get the mask in your backpack when you choose "I like MGS1" too. So far the only difference I've noticed is the intro with Snake disguised. That was awesome, and kind of made sense. :P

Got a bit farther in the game, after defeating the pain, the game is really starting to pick up imo, the graphics for the water is awesome aswell :D

Btw, there's supposedly a torch in the caves? I've searched everywhere and never found it, its a cool touch that snake's eyes get used to the darkness and you start to see, i stopped the cigar after a while since i could see pretty clearly, nice touch on kojima's part.

There's a section in the caves where you come up to 2 small waterfalls and that's where the torch is.

Best a place as any to post this but according to Variety, Kojima is now actually open to the idea of a Hollywood made MGS movie:
From ComingSoon.Net
Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is finally thinking about bringing the popular game series to the big screen, reports Variety.

Hollywood studios have been looking to pick up film rights to the testosterone-filled espionage title for some time, says the trade. But Kojima, a movie buff and occasional film critic, has held off on selling film rights until now.

The sophisticated gameplay of the "Metal Game Solid" series has revolutionized the gaming world, and the third installment of the PS2 title offers new 3-D twists and extra components available online. The first two installments were gigantic sellers for Japan's Konami, moving 14.63 million units worldwide (6.64 million in the U.S.) in the past six years.

Meanwhile, a rumor hit the net recently that producers Ronald Shusett ("Alien" franchise) and Daniel Alter have approached Bungie about adapting the "Halo" games into a movie.

Alter confirmed this to ComingSoon.net, adding that they have indeed talked to director Ridley Scott about a possible film. Apparently Bungie will only license the rights if both Scott and Shusett are involved with the project.

You can punch 'em in the face too and they beg for forgiveness. :lol

"Metal Game Solid" series

:lol :lol :lol

Anyway two questions, as I'm about to take on "the end"

01. Food with a fly icon on it means it's rancid and I should ditch it, right?
02. Is there a way to manually change the network settings on your memory card? It lists my account as being AT&T broadband but that was sold to Comcast a while ago. I don't remember what I did with that damn setup disc either...

I want me some downloadable camo...

Mrbob: Remember
with that particular camo, you can salute with triangle
. Some of the other camo's also have triangle button maneuvers, for example,
the scientist camo lets you fidget with your glasses
.

1 Fly: 50% chance of food poisoning
2 Flies: 100%

Nope, its basically just a custom data file, so you need a setup disc, FFXI, or something to edit the settings, I think.

Haha, I actually thought that my eyes were the ones that were getting used to the darkness. :P

And regarding a MGS movie...unless Kojima directs it himself, I don't want one.

Just finished the fight with Fear last night, and holy shit what an awesome fight that was!
I was desperately hoping something like this would make it into the game, as I'm a fan of Predator, and the whole camoflage gameplay / jungle setting in MGS3 was just begging for a Predator homage.
And man, did they make it perfect! It has to be one of the best boss fights that I've ever had a pleasure playing.

It was funny, because at one point, in my 2nd or 3rd. attempt at him, Fear's AI got bugged, he kinda got stuck in a loop after he said "Now get this!" and I could keep firing at him for a long time, he wouldn't move even when I reloaded the gun - that lasted until he was maybe with 1/4 energy left, and then he all of a sugged started his more furious attack pattern, and from that point on, I could not hit him one SINGLE time. That was the first time I lowered his energy below 50% so I never saw his second pattern, and I was like "oh man, if I couldn't kill him now that I had this AI bug to help me this much, I'm DOOMED"! It took me a long while to kill this bastard
(it's worth noting that playing at hard I did not even have a thermal googles at this point!)
but it was SO worth it. Btw, that AI bug never appeared again, and I had to strategize and think (and look closely) a lot. Damn, what a fight!

Another thing that wasn't even mentioned in the strategy guide - after you get back to the warehouse,
(after the fight with Fear)
- instead of going through that door where you need a card - you can exit back to the same outside dock area where you first entered warehouse from - only this time it's the daytime, and the whole location is again re-created for the new setting. Dear God, the water there looks just the f'n best ever - it's worth going there for a sight alone, but you can also find an NVG there (again, I'm playing on Hard, maybe they won't be there on Normal) You won't be able to get past that area, though as the passage is now closed.

I'm thinking, man, they could have just made that door locked this time around, and skipped creating that whole area during the daytime - but no - they made it, for those maybe 10% of players who will ever see it (it's *really* not that obvious a route...), and they made it one of the prettiest locations in the whole game so far... It's the things like this that just keep me in awe about the whole series, and respect people who make it that much more.

Kojima should just direct the movie if it gets made. Its obvious that he knows enough about Western pop culture to do it and his game is as cinematic as they come. I still don't see how the transition would be that hard and as big a movie buff as he is, I'm sure he has actors/actresses in mind.

Hehe, I got the NVGs in the cave while playing in normal and in hard. I think if you don't get an item in "its" first area it becomes available later on. On my first time I found the choco chip camo really late into the game, but on hard I just found them before the
Ocelot
. Its good that Kojima did this, considering you really can't backtrack.

Yeah, Kojima's team did that in MGS2 as well for some items; if you can miss it, there's another opportunity later on. I missed the SVD and found it later (in MGS3).

And you can backtrack to a certain extent, thanks to the cardboard box.

Damn, I just realized that the MGS3 version of the Metal Gear Solid main theme actually included the song I loved from the TGS 2004 trailer, at least the first part of the song, which can also be heard when you fight
the Shagohod
. I was hoping it would appear during an action-intense and dramatic cutscene. Very cool song all-around btw, best version of the MGS theme ever. :)

Hot damn this game is so good. Keeps on getting better. Some of the cutscenes I've seen lately are amazing!

Just completed my "battle" with The Sorrow. Very intriguing! Took my two times to figure out what to do though! :lol

Going back to play some more! :D

Damn, I just realized that the MGS3 version of the Metal Gear Solid main theme actually inluded the song I loved from the TGS 2004 trailer, at least the first part of the song,
Hellz yeah! I was so happy when I found that out myself. What an awesome beat in that music segment! You're talking about that upbeat/dynamic but sneaky sounding piece, right?

Hehe, I got the NVGs in the cave while playing in normal and in hard.
Damn, I completely missed them in the cave, and I thought I searched it high and low. I'd still use the torch in the cave though, it just looks so nice :)

Just finished off "the end."

Are you supposed to get some type of new camoflauge when you beat him? I didn't see any. And the way you get an acapella version of the theme song while you climb up that ladder in the tunnel is hilarious.

Awesome game. The mountain section is very cool so far.

I actually got the NVG
from Eva, up in the mountains. I thought it was kind of story-related, 'cause you fight the Fury after that part. And they kept telling me over radio to use NVG's because it was so dark, but it wasn't very dark for me which was somewhat disappointing. The cave part was a LOT darker. :/

you're supposed to sneak up on him and hold him up by pointing a powerful weapon at him to get his camo...you have to do it 3 times.

to get The Ends camo, you need to hold him up, and force him to drop it.

I agree with the Mountain area, that was one of my favorite areas. Well, who am i kinding, every area was one of my favorite areas :D
