Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

That's cool. Thanks Crazymoogle. Gonna try to get them all on my third play-through on the very same difficulty level (Extreme). BTW, do you know if there are consequences for not killing anyone in the
confrontation with The Sorrow
? I mean
there should be no spirits to avoid since I didn't kill anybody right?

Just arrived at the mountain top last night and got marauded and had to finally sleep (for real).
can't wait to go home and get back to Operation Snake Eater. haven't been this possessed by a game since CV: SotN..

None that I know of beside the camo, and I haven't really played around with that so maybe you get the camo from that battle anyway.
I'm not sure it you see just the guys you killed or what, but even bosses you used the Mk22 on do appear (since they did explode and all

Well this sucks I'm at
The Boss Fight
and I can't play the game intil Dec 15 at the earliest. Damn school... I have a question, maybe I missed something.
Why do all the bosses blow up?
I don't remember that happening in the previous two.

I got the sorrow camo even though I had killed quite a number of enemies. Didn't notice I actually had it until I was about to change camo.

How did you get it? Can you be more precice abou what you did to get it?
I just walked till the end of the "sorrows" and then died + rev.

anybody find a way to play with Snake minus the headband throughout the rest of the game? I don't know, I kind of like his natural look..

and I am a sucker, but I still LOVE the intro movie where Snake lands from his drop and looks up with the mask on and then throws it off.
DerRAMA!!!

does anyone know about
killing the end early?

i'm pretty sure i sniped him, but then i zoom in and i swear i see his
wheelchair blowing up? then something hits me and there is just smoke everywhere and i can't see what happened. but the door closes. did that old son of a bitch get away on me?

i dont mind either way because im going to definitely play through this game time and again, but i'm just wondering for my own peace of mind!

also, did anyone find the
osaka mask or whatever? the one where snake has womens lipstick and makeup on? that shit is funny.... and HOT!

thanks fellas

also, who else loves.. (minor spoiler)
.

that one full auto machine gun where when you fire it, Snake yells like a madman.
LOVE IT! there are SO many beautiful details to behold. GOTY.

I haven't read past the 1st page of this thread (I'm only 7 hours in the game), but something's bothering me about the game. I'm playing on hard, and didn't have any problems defeating the first two bosses. What I am having trouble with is getting past an area without being detected, because of the open spaces and large number of guards (compared to MGS2). Fortunately (or unfortunately), the game's easy enough (even on hard) that I can just run past them.

It doesn't really even matter if I play on normal (I tried), as the main problem is that lack of radar, and the restrictive camera system. Still, I'm having a lot of fun. But why did they remove the option of setting the triggers to either switch between weapons/items or equip/unequip weapons and items? It was in MGS1, MGS2 and even in the demo of MGS3.

I'm not going to check this thread until I finish the game, to avoid any spoilers, so no point in anyone replying to my post. :)

oh...dunno if this has been posted, but I saw a commercial for MGS3 over the weekend. Can't remember what channel, but atleast its good that Konami is avertising this game. It was pretty much a collage of cutscenes, and looked pretty good, I think.

That scene where :

Snake gets the living bejesus beat out of him by Volgin - has such a great piece of music that just ties that whole sequence together.

Watching it brutal as it is, but that music that played in the background as he's being beaten to a pulp just turned it into one of those holy shit moments.

Wha...? It's still in there...and it's still the best way to reload a weapon...

It's still in there man. Since L2 and R2 are analog, you just have to tap it to unequip/reload a weapon or item and hold it down to bring up the menus :)
They took out the L1 and R1 equip/unequip from MGS1 though... i think its better this way on L2 and R2.

I'm pretty sure that I still press R1 and L1 to quickly equip/unequip when I play MGS3. Maybe because I picked I like MGS1 in the beginning (though I recall it being the same for MGS2 as well)?

SPOILERS!

Jack: EVA, I wanted to ask you about Ocelot…
EVA: Yeah, I know. He’s pretty infatuated with you, isn’t he?
Jack: That’s not what I meant. Aren’t the Ocelots an elite unit?
EVA: Yeah.
Jack: So how’d he get to be their commander? He can’t be any older than 18 or 19. I can’t believe he’s already a major…
EVA: I heard from the Colonel that he’s been given…special treatment.
Jack: Special treatment?
EVA: Yeah. He’s the son of some legendary hero or something.
Jack: No wonder he seems to have the right stuff… So who is this legendary hero, anyway?
EVA: Beats me.
Jack: …
EVA: The Colonel never told me. All I heard was that his mother was supposedly shot in the gut during battle and that he was born right there, with bullets whizzing past them.
Jack: A pregnant woman in the middle of a battle?
EVA: That’s what I heard. They say that when they stitched her up, the scar was shaped like a snake.
Jack: Well, that’s battlefield medicine for you. What about his father, this legendary hero?
EVA: He didn’t tell me. I don’t think Ocelot’s ever met his parents.
Jack: Are they dead?
EVA: Maybe, I don’t know. There were a lot of MIAs back then, during the last days of the war. Ocelot probably would have ended up the same way. But he was taken in and raised by GRU and Volgin.
Jack: Because he was special?
EVA: That’s my guess.

?

Wouldn't pressing R1 bring you into 1st person mode in MGS3 and MGS2... And L1 bring your gun to a better aiming view when in 1st person mode?

I beat The End and now I'm in the mountains - holy shit, The Fear and The End were such an amazing boss fights. It's as if the authors took respective scenes from some of the greatest movies, and let you be the main character. I swear, during the fight with The End, my wife and I, all tense from trying to spot the old bastard, were whispering to each other whenever we thought we've seen something suspicious... I can't remember that a game brought such an atmosphere in a gameplay sessiong since, well, Ico. Just pure unfiltered awesomeness. I'm seriously splooging over this game, and can't even imagine what the last few hours everyone is talking about will be like.

This would be a good time to post all the camoflage patterns that I submitted to Konami back then when they were running the competition. None of them were chosen to be in the game (there was a total of four patterns from four guys chosen), but here's hoping some of them will be available for download one day :P

This one is supposed to look like some digitized autumn leaves or something:

Two Russian Kilim patterns:

Stylized Night Sky - the idea was to have blue dots glowing in the dark.

Stylized tangled Snakes:

Snake Skin:

Russian Communist Star with some funky flowery patterns.

Good ole hippie trippy 60s

Stylized grass (this one's not really a pattern, as it does not repeat, but they said it was OK to send non-repeating stuff like this)

Oh crap, I haven't been playing the games for a couple of few days (yes, shame on me). I guess I'm still just a bit too used to MGS1... or currently high on crack. In any case, I need to start playing again soon (damn myself for slacking off for the last 5 weeks and with exams coming up soon). :lol

Ok, is this thread safe for game ending discussion? Or should we create a new one. The ending of MGS3 answers a ton of questions but at the same time there a couple I still have. Oh man after beatin MGS3, I badly want a remake of the original Metal Gear. Metal Gear Solid was the first Metal Gear game I played. Here is one end game spoiler so don't read it unless you beat the game:

I know they go through a timeline from what happens from 1964 to the birth of Solid and Liquid Snake in 1972, but I'd love to see more details of what happened in that interim time in more detail! For example more detail on the creation of FOXHOUND.

There are really so many pths they can go with in the next MG game that it makes me wonder just how long it'll be before Solid Snake becomes the main character again. It'd kind of be weird going back to him now since he wouldn't have everything that Big Boss had, one of which would be the knife since Solid Snake doesn't use blades.

I was surprised there was actually a time when you could use the mask to your advantage too. But with fear of it ruining the cutscenes that followed, I chose not to. :P

I just walked till the end of the "sorrows" and then died + rev.

OK, let's see. I played on normal, I killed quite a lot of guards (maybe 200-250 total at the end). When "fighting" The Sorrow I kept walking like you're supposed to. I got injured a few times by the undead soldiers. I was also hit by The Sorrow's attack a couple of times. I did hit him 2-3 times too (by punching and shooting), as well as some of the zombies walking around. I was never hit by the dead Cobras. At the end I used the fake death pill. Once I could move again and was about to change camo, I noticed I had The Sorrow's camo in there too, but I never actually picked it up as far as I know.

And BTW, I remember hearing something about the place where The Sorrow died, near a bridge or something. Is it possible to find his remains in MGS3, assuming he died in the same area as MGS3 takes place in?

TTP said:

Well, it's nothing dramatic...but when playing against the Boss, it raises your camo index since everything there is white. I thought it would just be some funny extra, but it was actually useful. I still don't know what to use the monkey mask for though. :lol

Thanks Kiriku.

As to
where to find Sorrow's body, I dunno how to reach it but it is shown in the "orange" environment Snake gets to after having been ass-kicked by The Boss on the rope bridge (u know, when he is laying on the ground and Para-Medic explains how to use the Cure functions for the first time). If you look closely during that cutscene, you can spot the corpse behind a rock.

Ah ok, too bad it's not possible to move around in the area though. But hopefully there's some kind of trick to that...:P

I just realized if you eat spoiled food, and then make yourself throw up using the survival viewer, it "cleans" your stomach. This game is awesome.

Re: Sorrow
Isn't that the same area you end up in immediately after the Sorrow boss fight (the really beautiful area)? I seem to recall that the cutscene shows Sorrows spirit leaving his body or something. I wandered over to the left side of the area and IIRC found a corpse over there.

Really? You sure? I looked for it in that area but didn't find shit.

Not positive- its what I remember but I don't have any saves from that area to go back and verify (and I'm replaying SOL prior to replaying MGS 3 so it will be a little while until I get back there). They were both really pretty areas though....

After completing the game and thinking back...

You know, when Snake was tortured and lost one of his eyes I really felt like the game would develop into a rather depressing and sad story (in a good way, so to speak) about how Snake became the feared and "evil" Big Boss. Well, it kind of did in a way but...
...as it turns out, the saddest story of them all was about the Boss. When the truth about the Boss' situation was revealed, and her unavoidable death, she became one of the most intriguing characters ever in the MGS series for me. Even though Snake/Big Boss was a damn good character as well.

The tragic part of Big Boss' story comes in by you knowing how his life ended. He died by his own sons hands without Solid even really knowing why Big Boss turned out the way he did. It's hard not to feel sorry for the guy knowing exactly what he went through. Basically sent in to kill the only person he ever trusted, and being convinced she's turned evil only to find out that you have to kill her because your own government f'cked up.

At some point Solid's going to have to find out about Big Boss' past, so it'll be cool to see how his character develops after that.

Yeah, that's true...I agree it definitely added a good amount of personality to the previously rather mysterious character Big Boss. But when is Solid supposed to find out about it? In a "sequel" to MGS2? But couldn't he have found out already, just that it hasn't been presented in a game yet? I haven't been keeping up with the storyline enough to know if that's "possible" so to speak.

I finally beat all the Snake vs Monkey stages last night, and with the best times on each. Got an Ape Escape mask and a banana pattern camo.

:lol @
monkey Big Boss and Mesal Gear. The little guy even tries to kick and punch like Snake.

If he's found out they haven't revealed it. I think that'd be a big event though. It's not easy to trust a country knowing how fast they'll turn on you.

I agree with your original post though, the saddest story of all is The Boss'. Even though she beat Snake really badly alot, I never hated her. There was always something about her that didn't seem evil like Volgin and the others. You could tell there was alot more to her than we were told at the start. So in the end you feel like Snake, even though you don't want to kill her there's no other choice. Even Snake Eater kicking in during the fight makes it sad for some reason. :P

While it certainly wasn't addressed in the original MG 1 & 2, I think it would be hard for Snake to know about the reasons for Outer Heaven without being told of the existance of the Patriots at that time too. MGS 2 established that Snake had never heard of the Patriots prior to the Tanker incident. I *guess* that could be retconned by BB having used the term Philosophers vice Patriots but it still feels like a cheat.

What's interesting to me is that Big Boss and all of his sons except for Solid Snake have embraced the idea for an Outer Heaven-like state although all for different reasons (both good and bad). I'd love to see Solid Snake also come around to seeing the merits of an Outer Heaven in a MGS 4.

The difficulty is structuring a game around it- the easiest way to do it is have Snake effectively play Big Boss's role from the original Metal Gear with a new agent having to infiltrate it. But unlike the original MG, the new agent would end up allied with Snake. It would also play strongly off of the mentor relationships at the heart of MGS 2 and 3.

The big problem- the protagonist is someone other than Snake which pretty effectively kills the idea after MGS 2.

Its also interesting that Snake and Otacon formed Philantrophy, then there's the Patriots, and in MGS 3
another P-word, the Philosophers
. I wonder if Philanthropy had the potential to ultimately travel down the same road as the other two.

The big problem- the protagonist is someone other than Snake which pretty effectively kills the idea after MGS 2.

I still think a new protagonist can be accepted - just that the Raiden design and character alienated a lot of players.

Not that there's anything wrong with being an effeminate ninja, but that's about as far out from left field as you can get from the Snake design as you can get.

So will this MGS game tell how or transform Big Boss into an evil character as the game progesses or do you have to play the MG games?

AssMan said:

You get an idea at the end of the game, when you find out you were lied to, betrayed, forced to kill your mentor/mother figure for an elaborate hoax, plus the fact that during the game he's tortured, beaten, and gets his eye shot out.

The Boss and Eva set the stage for Big Boss's heel turn, they brief him, and let him know of the evils of the world and how countries use their own people as chess pawns to carry out their biding in order to gain riches and power.
