Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

Just wanted to say something I figured early on but forgot to say - the Logitec wireless 'Precision' controller is not really usable with MGS3. The analog button sensitivity works different on this controller than it does on the original DS2, and it makes it nigh impossible to put the weapon down without firing from it.

that's good to know as I indeed found difficult to release the trigger w/o shooting in MGS3 as compared to MGS2. That's 'cos I've been using the Logitech controller this time.

Holy shit I'm owned again . This game rocks! I was pretty much fed up with MGS games and the stealth genre in general, but MGS3 really kicked it up a few notches! Even the graphics wowed me. Not the textures so much, but the overall level of detail was impressive. The game play additions were quite welcome as well. It took me a few tries to get some of the CQC moves down, but it feels pretty intuitive now. I really wasn't at all used to analog sensitivity functions, aside from aiming in MGS2. The boss battles rock!
Just when you think the game is going to end BAM!
Also love the new
sneaking suit
. ;)

GOTY contender, easily

Anyone else
kill The End's parrot?
:lol

So what did Liquid mean when, at the end of MGS2 he says and I quote "Why do you think I choose Ocelot as my host?". How can a dead guy "choose" a host!? And why would he keep Liquids arm knowing that he could be taken over?

Also, there are 12 new Philosphers by the time of MGS2, correct? If so, do they all reside in the U.S, or are they all in different countrys? And what was the whole deal, with the "200 years ago a kind of "consciouness" formed in the White House" Speach?

Either Kojima will explain all that shit in the next Metal Gear game or he realized that it was all very fucking retarded in the first place and decided to throw it out of the window. :P

I think the first part was just Liquid's ego speaking through with a healthy dose of insanity.

As to the second (are spoilers even required for MGS 2?):
As Jett said I'm assuming Kojima will explain it in the next MGS. If not, my theory is that the "conciousness" is specifically referring to a computer AI. Likely created by GW or an earlier program but it probably had already spread to elsewhere on the net so it remained active even after the virus went after GW.

The AI likely analyzed America's history in determining its idea of how the country shouldl be run and would use that as the guideline for the future. The AI is probably a rogue entity out of control of the Patriots or any remaining Philosophers (with obvious shades of Terminator and Matrix). I seriously doubt that Kojima meant that stuff literally- remember it was all told from GW's point of view.

Finished getting best times for all the Snake vs Monkey stages...man the monkey mask kinda sucks. You cant see anything in 1st person mode with it on hehe.

Sigh. I've just finished the game for the 3rd time having meticolously hit each of those 60+ green frogs and I got nothing. I'm afraid I've missed one or two but heck I'd I know which ones? Damn, I have to replay it again. On Extreme, that is :/

Gimme my stealth camo already! >_<

I just beat the game a second time on Friday. I nailed all of the frogs up until the
Shagohod chase sequence
which seems like it's more trouble than it's worth, especially since I wouldn't be able to carry the stealth camo to any other difficulty levels.

Has anyone else played around with spinning the Single Action Army (pressing the right anolgue stick in FP view)? It seemed like after messing around with that a few times, Snake will randomly twirl it when I go into first person view with it equiped. Pretty cool. :)

I've also rattled off 3 of the Snake vs. Monkey missions, these things are no small accomplishment. :D

Obviously the motorcycle scenes are the toughest ones, so just save before every bike area and if you're positive you hit the frog, get to the next bike area and save again. I replayed when I wasn't 100% sure I hit it...if you replay those scenes enough you start to be able to snipe a frog like 4 times while riding by ;)

Stealth camo is nice, it's so easy to CQC guards when they can't see you :D

Beat the game Saturday night and I'm still buzzing from it. This game was completely off my radar until I bought it in a hazy-game-buying-splurge over Thanksgiving break.

So now that Kojima has confirmed that the European version will contain more extras, I'm already getting pumped for the inevitable MGS3: Integral / Substance / ? version. But I'm wondering what consoles (if any) will get it besides PS2 simply because of the Ape Escape mini-game. Konami would have to strip it from the Xbox version for sure, and maybe even the PC version because the characters are Sony property. But if they pack enough goodies into the game, maybe cutting Snake Vs Monkey won't be a big deal.

What do you guys think?

-rp

I'd also like to say how the A.I is MUCH smarter. Try using Stealth Camo and they're smart, in that in the last MGS games you could just be shooting in one direction and the guards would just line up to get killed. Now even though they can't see you they will shoot in whatever direction you're shooting from. So even with the Stealth Camo equipped it's best to keep moving around.

As for The End call me weaksauce, but I got fed up and saved and messed with the PS2 internal clock. But one thing is for sure, MGS3>>>MGS>>>>>>>>>>MGS2!

Oh, those are the sure ones. I got them all using the technique you described. :/

I'm really clueless about which I missed really.

it's not random. You do actually control the spinning (and its speed) with the right analogue stick.

the game carries over the ones you hit already. put on the ga-ko camo and after you exit the menu you'll hear a frog noise if you missed it in that area. there's a gamefaqs guide with all the locations and you can use this pic for the motorcycle area

You aren't worthy of MGS3.

I understand that much
I spent plenty of time playing around with it in the prison cell
. What I mean is that it sometimes it seems like Snake will twirl the gun at times even when I'm not pushing the right stick. I've seen it happen a few times that I was reasonably sure I did not tap the right stick.

A couple of them don't make locational sense (ie: if you're on a cliffside in area X and have to snipe something that's technically in area Y, that doesn't mean you can go to area Y and shoot it from close up)

A couple of the ones that tripped me up for awhile:

1.
On the cliff edge overlooking grozyj grad, you can snipe one from the tower in the distance, and then there is a frog when you go back inside the house.

2.
In the room overlooking the Shagohod hanger, you hear the ribbit trigger for the frog hidden beside the Shagohod. But if you go through the door to the west (into the short hallway where you have to salute to the guards), there is another frog - the moment you enter the west hall, look south through the window for a frog on the spotlight tower.

I'm assuming that's the one you're hearing, the one next to the Shagohod even though technically it's in a different area. Pretty weird.

You mean the house where u meet with EVA? The frog just "appears" there after u come back from the cliff?

Got this during the first section of the chase (while you are still inside the walls of the base) :)

Well when you go into the house you go into a cutscene with EVA right away, and after the cut scene you are outside on the cliffs. So it didn't just reappear since you coudn't examine the house until after the cutscene was over and you go back in.

Most faqs list those as 2 different frogs though. The one you shoot from the bridge inside, and the one during the first part of the chase.

Yeah, it's weird that you hear the frog while looking through the window at the shagohod. I thought for a moment it might be the game tripping me up, but the DPL2 confirms the location.

And I think the tower frogs alternate towers, don't they? Right side for the west hall, left side for the motorcycle chase? They're definitely different ones from what I can tell, anyway.

Just finished the game.. Have a question, might be stupid, but

Are there 2 endings? When I was running in the jungle with Eva, ParaMedic said that if she fell behind, then go on ahead. Is there an ending where Eva doesn't make it?

Sorry if this is already been addressed or if I'm just an idiot.

I haven't tried it yet, but I read there is a "bad ending" if you don't kill the Boss within the 10 minute limit.

I don't really call that an ending though, it's basically just an extended game over screen

heh, like said ealier, just another example of how fantastic Konami is with that. Again something a portion of people likely won't see and it still was very well down

anyone know where i can get the general's uniform? I see him in the east wing inside the stalls.

Follow him till he reaches the lockers, then knock him down and grab the body towards the lockers

i just beat MGS3...wow. I was trying to hold off till after finals, but I decided to just finish it so it wouldnt keep tempting me (damn Snake).

My favorite part about the ending was
The Boss's slight smile while talking to Snake. I think it was after you beat her, but it also might have been just before.

I have some questions about the ending, I tried looking earlier in the thread, and didn't see them answer/asked, so sorry if they end up being repeats.

What was the significance to Snake telling Ocelot his name was John? Did I miss something? Also, what happens if you choose the wrong gun in the end? Was the guy who Snake refused to shake his hand anyone important? How do you unlock the monkey mask?

Re: The ending -

depending on your interpretation, Snake was either lying to Ocelot or telling the truth -

In the beginning Snake was goofing around with Para Medic and told her his name was John Doe when she asked (yeah I know what John Doe is and so forth)

But to some folks, John is just another name for Jack (John/Jack Kennedy, etc..etc..)

Personally, I think Snake was just fucking with Ocelot, cus when he said John he had this weird grin on his face.

There's actually several variations of the end "duel" with Ocelot, depending on if you pick the loaded gun or not, and depending on whether or not if you miss Ocelot with the one bullet.

Pick the loaded gun, and shoot Ocelot with it - the bullet will be a blank

Pick the loaded gun, and miss Ocelot with it - the bullet will be real, ocelot will say something about his luck

Pick the empty gun and Ocelot shoots you - the bullet will be a blank and he'll give you the SAA for use in your next run through the game (SAA with infinite ammo I think).

I've also heard something happens if you pick the loaded gun, but don't fire at him.

Don't know why but I can't stop laughing at
The Boss doing Ocelot's hand motion to him as Ocelot leaves after the Torture sequence
.

EekTheKat said:

Yeah, he asks Snake why he didn't pull the trigger but Snake just looks at him and doesn't say shit

I have a question...I beat MGS3 last week, but this just popped in my head...
Are we to assume that Sokolov died from being shot in both knees?

No, he died from being tortured. Right after you're captured in the West Wing of Groznyj Grad, while the screen is black, you hear Volgin torturing Sokolov first. It seems like Volgin went a bit overboard on the old man...

Just finished and i almost kicked my self in the ass trying to beat it before 8 this morning. Its been a crazy few hours (started playing at 5am at the prison) This game is freaking great. So worth the rental. And i'm glad to have scene a real love story built into the series. And i'm also glad that Kojima didnt dumb down the plot, i loved being confused by MGS2 for months on end.

The Birth of the SONS will happen next i hope.

Damn what a good game. I didnt hate one thing about the game thus far either. Which is kind of odd since i usually complain about anything and everything about a game.

Wow, wow, wow! I finally beat the game (too bad I had finals that disrupted my playing, and on top of that I had to go to Toronto for the weekend), and the whole final part was amazing. I had a hard time against The Boss at first, especially since I tried following Zero's advice at first (hide in the bushes, sneaking up on her, etc.). But I finally started just countering her CQC and punching and kicking her to knock her down and then administer a shotgun shot to her head. It took 16 of those to finish her off. But too bad the cut-scene afterwards had a different camo than the one I was wearing.

The phone call got me a bit confused though, especially since I had subtitles set to off.

BTW, you can't leave Eva behind. The action button doesn't work anymore, so you can't get over any obstacles, and if she dies, it's game over. I would like to know, though, what choosing the wrong weapon at the end does (I heard you get an extra weapon for your next playthrough?).

Think there's a glitch. I was at the area in the beginning of the game where you go around those electric fences, and a dog spotted me and I pulled out the .45 supressor and after I killed the dog my silencer was gone. WTF happened? I tried pressing O or triangle in the menu and nothing.

The silencer deteriorates after extended use. There's a counter to know how many more times you can use it.

I just rented the game, it looks pretty cool, but whats up with Snake's voice? The voice actor just didnt care much for this one :(

AssMan said:
You mean like the sensors that recover when you put them away or does the silencer dissappear once you've worn it out?

The silencer deteriorates after use and there is nothing you can do about that (it disappears). Other silencers are to be found during the game. In order to equip them, just hit Square (IIRC) when highlighting the gun in the inventory.

I suggest you unequip the silencer if you don't need to be silent (ie: during boss fights)

For those of you having trouble with frogs you can also get
stealth camo
by going through the game without getting any alerts. Much easier then trying to get all the frogs IMO.

BTW, it took me 26 hours, 17 minutes, and 46 seconds to get through the game, and I killed 244 enemies on the way! So much for being stealthy. :lol

Choose weapon on the right: Get bonus item: Single Action Army. It doesn't have unlimited ammo, but you can get some ammo for it early and often. The SAA stays in inventory as a bonus just like the Patriot.

Suppressors: Keep R2 held, move to the weapon with a suppressor, and press Circle to equip/unequip. A meter above the weapon indicates how many shots can be fired til the suppressor literally falls off, and the "x00" number indicates how many suppressors you have in inventory.

There is no way to replace a weakened suppressor with a fresh one; you just have to be on the ball and switch as soon as it falls off.

FYI: The latest issue of PSM contains every MGS3 trailer. Its good to have a hard copy of every MGS3 trailers just in case a MGS3 document DVD doesn't materialize.

That does sound easier than getting all the frogs. But I've already messed that up. I'm at the base right before the first Ocelot fight and I've had like 3 brief alerts. Two when Snake is surrounded by the Ocelot Unit and one was some lame guard who was at Alert for less than 2 seconds...It's my fault though, I should have done CQC faster. I guess my current game is just to get more camos, better rating, and fewer kills.

Oooo, I gotta pick that up. What's on the cover?

God Damn, the encounter with Sorrow was freaky. Freaky as hell. I had to stop playing mid-chase scene becasue it was way too late last night, and I was left with so little energy
at the part where Shagohod starts firing missiles
that I kept dying anyways. Now I hope that by leaving the game alone for a day, the energy will replenish, like it did one other time I did that.
