Official Metal Gear Solid 4 TGS Thread

I love the trailer. There is something that I can't help but think about everytime I see some MGS4 news. Is Snake the villian in this game?

I know Kojima said Snake dies in this game but he never says how. It would be some hot shit if a perfected big boss clone is sent on a mission to stop snake and the others. We, the gamers, would play through the game as snake up to the final battle. In the final battle they could surprise the gamer by putting you in the prespective of the third generation big boss and then you would have to kill snake. That would be a real mind****.

Well it's certainly not bad. It could play exactly like MGS3 and it would still kick ass. But yea, they really need to go away from canned animations...

actually I am kind of hoping that it doesn't play like MGS3.

I am very concerned that MGS4 will basically be prettier game different setting, but the same gameplay.

We have had the same gameplay for a while now, and the series needs to change a little. I have faith in Kojima :D

Graphically, this game looks awesome, but...

not as good as the "omg realtime this is ps3 not cg" trailer stuff shown months ago.

Yes, slight downgrade*. :lol

*to reality, where a great looking game is a great looking game, and showing "enhanced" footage only sets viewers up for a jarring dose of reality.

Have you played them? MGS3 had many new gameplay elements.

So what's been downgraded?

I want to know what's been downgraded.

The awesome animation from the trailers?
Those first trailers were CUTSCENES. Every MGS games has featured plenty of cutscenes with animation beyond what you see in game.

There are NO games on the market or on the horizon with animation on par with those cutscenes. That doesn't mean they weren't generated in realtime nor is it even a statement about the hardware itself. Creating a game where the animations are of THAT quality is beyond the realm of possibility right now (IMO).

The actual level of detail on everything is the same, though. There is no downgrade here, it's just the difference between gameplay and cinema. It has NOTHING at all to do with the power of the machine at this point.

Does every thread have to be ruined?

Yeah. At least every thread about Metal Gear. Which just goes to truly show the talent of Kojima Productions -- when things about very early animations are the only things people can find to bitch about, I think that's saying quite a bit about Kojima and his team.

Ok, maybe the animations can look a little bit "old", but this is a thing that only Xbots can say... What I have to say after seeing that screenfloor video is... WOW, Holy Shit :) I Just have to play this! I wanna play it, there will be a lots of new skills and things to do in MGS4.

Those were cutscenes, they will animate just as well in the final game. Gameplay will never have animation like that.

I would suggest waiting before saying that with certainty. Gekko's and MKII's animations look very similar (if not the same) to the cutscenes which means the the soldiers' stiff animation can be fixed.

Oh, my bad, from reading and hearing all the responses to the original "cutscene" trailers I was (mis?)informed that a.) they were representative of gameplay b.) the actual gameplay would look like that, but with a playable camera angle. I didn't know then that everyone was getting excited about the graphics in cutscenes. I thought the game(play) was gonna look like that. I intimated nothing about hardware, by the way.
I'm half-expecting to get a death threat in my PM now.

EDIT: I said the game looks great, damnit.

The way that animates is pretty awesome, you can see the way his feet move to knock it, in which it bounces slightly, down from the inside and how he shifts himself by getting himself out slight to rebalance the barrel up right over him.

EDIT

What program did you use to make this GIF gek54?

I cant believe anyone would claim downgrade on this, animation be damned, this game looks completely amazing and to me is still the most impressive next gen display ive seen.

Discussion on the graphics are OVER, they have matched if not surpassed the teasers ingame no less.

Gameplay/Animation etc is very much open for debate, think if we are to compare this showing to anything its MGS3, and from the looks of it the animation is not above and beyond like we expected. I wonder also how much of it was new but in fact lifted from MGS3 because of time constraints perhaps.

besides that the new camera rocks, some of those new moves by snake were just great to watch and I cant wait to see more.

Did that actually LOOK like gameplay to you, though? Use your head, man.

If this were the first showing of a Metal Gear title, I could understand, but we've been through this several times and it should be obvious what is cutscene and what is intended to be gameplay.

It's somewhat funny to hear the animation take heat at this point, though, as it is still far beyond what we are likely to see in the final version of the 360 holy grail, Gears of War. Now THAT game has some animation problems. Even with the improvements they've made, it's still pretty terrible in comparison to this...yet many people have no problems suggesting that GoW might just be the single best looking game on the horizon.

I, personally, find most of the animation to be top-notch...surpassing most anything I've seen in the past. Certain walking/running animations may have been recycled to get the game together for the time being...but with the direction this game is heading in and in a year's time when the game is finally released, I'm almost certain that all animation in the game will be absolutely amazing.

Actually im pretty sure GOW has taken massive heat for animation and framerate issues in the past, plus, we haven't really seen the game since E3, and it probably has improved by then. I really think its pretty harsh to use the word terrible when describing GoW next to anything, the game looks good, and hopefully next week they'll show it looking even better......enough shit talking though, this is about MGS, which looks amazing.

Looks the same to me. The Gekko in the scan is one without weapons (they all carry different weapons in the trailers, some don't even have guns for some reason) and it's in a brighter place then the E3 Gekko (that and the IGN E3 trailer is very dark), but those are the only differences I can see. I wonder if it uses the same animation for its stomp?

Gears of War HAS taken massive heat (as it should have) for those issues...but not necessarily by the people slamming MGS4's animation. That's my point. Everyone is biased to a degree, but it shocks me that some are so willing to give Epic the benefit of the doubt with something like GoW while giving Kojima Productions so much heat. The platform of release DOES have a significant impact on most opinions.

MGS4's animation is certianly not perfect at this point, but it does present a wide variety of movements in a very smooth fashion. Some are better than others, but none of it is "choppy" or poor looking.

GoW DOES look great, but there is no denying that the framerate was awful in the past. I'm hoping they at least get it up to "decent" level by release.

Damn that looks fine.

Why can't I have this with my Wiimote :(

Because it has only Three axis, compared to the Sixaxis of the PS3 controller :lol

Seriously, I am glad KojiPro used the tilt function in such a good way... Rolling while shooting FTW!

talent? Besides the story what can you really say the franchise has going for it?

Camera? no
Graphics? no
Animations? no
Gameplay? no
AI? no
Stealth Elements? no

etc etc...

And granted, these are all things that plagued the ps2 versions but still... People give too much credit to a team who really has yet to prove anything... (again, besides a story which I've heard is amazing. I can't get by the crappy gameplay to enjoy it though)

Maybe they will finally resolve everything and make a killer total package... but I'm not holding my breath.

That was one of the most retarded things I have read on here ever. Ever.
