it's not the same. at all. OTL points exist and teams play appropriately (i.e., more recklessly). not to mention that the existence of a shootout loss replaces the possibility of points from ties, so it's only fair that teams receive a point.

granted, the points are skewed to some extent and don't completely reflect a team's quality. but that's generally the case with records. the teams that win games, in whatever fashion, are the ones that are rewarded. the same argument goes for teams that make it past three periods tied. that's an accomplishment and in the nhl teams are rewarded a point. deal with it.

points matter. winning % doesn't. end of discussion

btw, the canucks are screwed right now in the standings because of OTL and i actually prefer the habs to the leafs. but i still think you're being ridiculous

Getzlaf started out really slow. I ended up trading him off my fantasy team for Spezza, who was almost a point per game at the time. Then Getzlaf ends up scoring 20 points in his next 10 games, while Spezza has had like 2.
