Uhhh...

report from Chicago radio station, 3 way trade in the works...

To Toronto : Joe Thorton
To Boston : Eric Daze
To Chicago : Ed Belfour

This was on the message board on Eklund's site, anyone from chicago know what this is about lol?
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

*wipes away tear*

Unless there were sacks FULL of gold coins going by the carload to Chicago and Boston in that deal it would be the worst trade in sports history.

I know

I know you know, you added your own lol and were smart enough to mention the laughable source... I just still found it hilarious. :D

Hey guys. I just realized something.
We haven't really talked about the new shoot-out format!

Great breakaway players are gonna be a pretty big asset in the 'new nhl'!
I think most goalies' breakaway stopping skills are in line with their overall skills...

Wow! It should be really fun!
Goalies will start studying players' moves...and players will, as a result, have to stay creative. Who knows, maybe that creativity will filter down to the regulation time play too. Whoo!

I think almost all of the new rules are ass. If they would just call the game as it is written, the game's speed, flow and scoring would right itsself.

Shootout are the equivalent of settling a football game with field goals, or baseball with a HR derby. That said, I don't see the shootout being a big asset. Goalies are gonna stop 9/10. Having elite players will help, but goalies rule the roost.

Tagup offsides will hurt the dumb hockey fan, too confusing for them. The 2 line pass is a good idea, but it hasn't helped in other leagues with 2 line passes.

I agree about the shootout thing... I'm not thrilled.

But how exactly are the new rules "ass"?

Eklunds latest blog says Belfour might be getting shopped...

so who knows

I explained my thoughts on 2 lines and tag up offsides.

The goaltending changes (where the goalie can play it) just hurts teams that can spring offensive plays via a goalie a la Brodeur. Think about how much(in theory assume he doesn't play for the devils) more he can spring players for breakaways.

Goalie equipment size has been getting smaller for years and scoring has been going down steadily. It's not the gear, it's the guy.

The instigator rule is pretty subjective-open to huge issues.

Penalizing a goalie for " if they "freeze" the puck unnecessarily." What does that mean?

Changing zone size might only make a modicum, if any, of a difference.

I do think the flipping the puck over the boards rule is a good change though.

I think the Raptors have something to say about that...

Disallowing the goalies to play the puck like they did before is a stupid rule, and pretty counterproductive in terms of what they want to achieve. But otherwise, I'm fine with the others. Penalty shootouts in the regular season don't bother me at all...they're no more gimmicky then four on four, and ties fucking suck unless a team's getting three points for a victory like they do in soccer. Since that isn't gonna happen, I'm fine with shootouts.

Well I'm happy the Sabres finally signed someone. Numminen is a pretty old guy, but looking at his stats, they compare favorably to Zhitnik. Numminen was -5 last year, that that's the only year in the last 7 that he was in the minus range...and he was +13 with 13 goals and 48 pts in 2001-2002. If he can recreate those numbers, this will be a great signing. Zhitnik has been in the minus each of the last 6 years, with a high of 37 pts.
Sabres got a great dman. Numminen is one of the smartest players in NHL. And he was the best dman in World Cup 2004. He's old but still a great player. :)

I'll add that there was no lamer rule in the NHL than the "overtime loss." If they want to make OT exciting, this is a better way of going about it than rewarding teams for losing.

The only thing I'm really questioning is the goalie rule (puck play). I'd much rather have seen a goalie explicitly become fair game behind the red line while he's playing the puck, but that would never happen and could lead to all sorts of ugliness. Still, it would get rid of the "I'm a goalie, so I'm not going to get out of your way, but don't even think of touching me" attitude.

I also would have rather seen them wait on eliminating the red line until after they proved an intent to have, for the first time in the last decade, an actual zero-tolerance of obstruction. I think in itself, that could have made a difference.

Finally, I think tag-up offside's return is awesome. I've never liked the recent version of the offside rule.

OTL was worse, no doubt. I'd sooner take shootouts. Still, neither is the best solution. 5-on-5 overtimes were dumped since they were frequent and rarely resolved. But that was a result of fewer goals. Now, if they've created a system that would see more goals as the rules seem to imply (meaning less OTs, less ties), I'd rather they bring back 5-on-5 overtime and ties. It's traditional hockey from start to finish and if the teams are even after 65 minutes, so be it. Split the two points between them.

BUT FOR THE SAKE OF ENTERTAINMENT AND AMERICANS WITH SHORT ATTENTION SPANS, BRING ON THE SHOOTOUTS!

Tag Up offsides is the best rule ever, it keeps the game moving longer, with less unneccesary whistles. Basically they've changed the rules to be almost exactly like the AHL was last year, and having gone to a few AHL games, that was awesome hockey. Lots of flow and very few play stoppages.

In other news, Montreal will acquire Crosby and Malkin for Bouillon and Dagenais

PITTSBURGH AM DOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

On a serious note, they BETTER fucking sign Malkin and that kid better get his ass over here from Russia. He's got a dynasty to help build.

I have to hand it to Eklund, the bigger the lie the more it gets reported on all sorts of internet sites. I've seen this same trade over at the ESPN Leaf board...the guy who is Eklund must have no life to start up all this shit for his amusement. Doesn't he ever get tired of it? :lol

That Eklund dude is a genious.
He's apparently setting up some hockey fan site and charging $20 for membership.
During this frenzy, I'm sure a lot of people are signing up, thinking he's actually privy to insider info - when in fact he mainly just posts obvious rumors (reported from other sources) mixed in with some interesting made-up rumors. Since the obvious rumors usually turn out true, people overlook the made-up ones that don't turn out true.

btw: Canucks resign Morrison for 3 years.

I wonder if he could sued for the stuff he's doing? If someone proves he's not an insider and is scamming people?

LOL -- I just checked his site, apparently the Leafs signed someone named "Tomi" -- I have to find more info on who this up and coming star "Tomi" is.

He also has articles on there by Howard Berger from the fan590 -- now THAT'S something that's verifiable...I think I'll email Berger on the fan and ask if he's actually contributing articles to this blog.

Time to stir up shit... LOL

No, it will go to 20 minute repeating overtime in playoffs like normal :)

Domi just went on Toronto radio and started trashing the media personalities including Bill Watters and Jeff Marek. Then he hung up. :lol

Everyone so far got overpaid minus Iginla and forsberg (imo)

Looks like the CBA wasnt so anti-players after all. More like anti-utility players

It's gonna be weird. Alot of teams will have 3-4 guys making big money, then a bunch of scrubs.

Igor Ulanov seems to have signed in Edmonton...

For some reason Igor rocks in Edmonton.. then plays like complete shit everywhere else. =P

1999-00 MONT, NHL 43gp 1g 5a 6pts -11
2000-01 EDMO, NHL 67gp 3g 20a 23pts +15
2001-02 FLOR, NHL 14gp 0g 4a 4pts -3

2002-03 FLOR, NHL 56gp 1g 1a 2pts +7
2002-03 SAN, AHL 5gp 1g 0a 1pts -2
2003-04 EDMO, NHL 42gp 5g 13a 18pts +19

:lol

In Edmonton hes a warrior! :D I like him almost asmuch as BOBO.
Its the "If i wasnt a hockey player Id be a homeless drunk in Russia" factor

I'd be shocked if Kariya didn't go to Chicago now. Edmonton's offering only a 1-year @ 3 million, Vancouver's roughly the same.

Not Naslund - he could have commanded the max and everybody knew it. Hometown discount to stay with God's Team™ - how could he go wrong? :D

Why would Chicago sign Khabibulin when they almost had the Belfour trade in the bag? ;)

someone from the hawks this morning discredited that rumor followed by "After that trade i would have lost my job"

or something like that

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms on contracts with goaltender Jussi Markkanen and defenceman Igor Ulanov. Markkanen has agreed to a two-year contract with the Oilers, while Ulanov has come to terms on a one-year deal.

*LOL* Awesome. I still hate the guy though.

Rocket9 and Manics: I agree! I just hope it's just the phase where owners are getting used to this cap and over time things will balance itself out.
