Oh man, it is painful to watch Dopey get himself all worked up about pie in the sky deals for the Leafs. :lol Going to be a looong winter for Leaf fans I think - unless some miraculous signings or amazing trades come through (trades where the other team basically gives JFJ everything while asking for nothing but overpaid players in return) your team is just not going to be very good.

If it's any consolation though, the Sens still have 57 year old Hasek in net. :lol Except for the Flyers, every pre season "top" team in the East has serious roster holes to work out... who are the Bolts going to get to replace Khabby? Can the Devils survive losing Stevens and Niedermayer? And even the Flyers aren't a sure bet, they have great players with injury histories and they loaded up on big, strong dmen that may or may not match up well against other clubs depending on how the new rules change the game.

worked up? pie in the sky?

Dude, I just theorize all day. And it's not just about Leafs it's about everything.

I just thought posting the best way out in my opinion would be a good idea :s

Adding stuff like "kiss his shoes" is obligitory, it's part of othe contract of being a leaf fan

Calder since you seem to be the resident Sens expert, who does Ottawa have in place as their back-up goalie? After Hasek's injury plagued "return" in 03-04, it seems like Ottawa's managment is taking a double the gamble by letting Prusek walk.

Can the Devils survive losing Stevens and Niedermayer?

Tough to take Nieds' defection, especially since NJ offered the $7.8M max contract over 5 years. Most of the Devils beat writters are convinced that Stevens will return for a farewell season and play sparingly like Ken Daneyko did in his last season here. Lou did good to bring back Rafalski and to quickly add Malakov and McGillis but the later are depth players/stop gaps. Luckily they're only 2 year deals so the Devils will have cap flexiility in the future as the age for free agency drops.

And even the Flyers aren't a sure bet, they have great players with injury histories and they loaded up on big, strong dmen that may or may match up well against other clubs depending on how the new rules change the game.

Agreed. Their defense looks intimidating on paper (are any of them shorter than 6'5"?) but Hatcher's had some injury problems and they are all on the older side. Plus they handed Rathje a 5 year deal which I'm positive they'll have to buy-out after 3.

Prusek is a good backup goalie, but there's no doubt Emery is the Sens #1 of the future - he's had two excellent years in the AHL and he's still only 22. I bet the Sens want Hasek to have one more solid year left (I doubt it, but I've never exactly been a Hasek fan so my opinion may be clouded ;)) and have Emery as the backup before taking over as the #1 next season. It wouldn't shock me if the Sens signed a cheap veteran backup goalie and let Emery get another years experience playing the bulk of the games in Binghamton.

Either way, I half-expect the Sens to have Emery in goal by the end of the season... I also think the Sens will be a top 4 team in the East this season but they don't have enough especially in goal to make too much noise in the playoffs.

Lindros is a Leaf. Conference on Monday. Zettaberg (SP?), Thornton (from trade) and Cujo might be going to leafs too according to a website ! :D

say what?

There are murmurs that the Leafs will sign him within the next couple days, but Zetterberg (for antropov?!) and thornton (for belfour?!) and cujo signing are all pretty big stretches.

I'd say the almost sure fire bet is leafs/lindros, everything else will take some work. but then again it's all hope too, because players can drop out and sign elsewhere within a matter of minutes.

I think we may need to see this website to confirm this...

Lindros becoming a Leaf was probably one of the few sure bets of this off-season...hopefully he'll avoid another bone-jarring hit while his head is down. Gotta think his jersey will sell like ten dollar Porsches if he has a decent season.

On the other hand, those rumoured Leaf trades make no sense whatsoever. Then again not much has made sense this past week, so who knows. But I'll believe it when I see it.

Eklund's message board quoting an unamed chicago radio station lol, as far as the 3 way between boston, chicago and toronto lol

But the Zetterberg rumours are all over the place

I think that's way too much for Ziggy...but hey, another solid addition to the Pens.

Oates rules! As far as I know he didn't do much in Edmonton as far as points go, but didn't he help improve their faceoffs? Because for the last 2 years, it seemed as if Edmonton couldn't even win 1/3 of faceoffs in a game :lol

Anyways, mark me down as a Detroit, Pheonix, Edmonton and Pittsburgh fanboy. I think they have a combined total of 8 balls, so there is a decent chance one of them will get Crosby. :)

The funny thing is that the only traditionally strong team (Detroit) looks to be the weakest of the bunch. :P

Shit, I (and everyone else) wanted Palffy. 4.5 is a bit steep but it would have been nice to have him...

Still, my favourite UFA signing so far is the Domi resigning. Having that ass-clown back in TO will entertain the shit out of me all year! :D
Domi flays Leaf foes

Tie Domi wants the media to go easy on the Maple Leafs.

He just doesn't appear to be ready to go easy on the media.

Shortly after using a press conference announcing his re-signing with the Leafs as a forum to implore the Toronto media to start "talking more hockey for a change, instead of knocking who we're talking to, or who we want to sign," Domi walked out on a live radio interview.

The Leafs tough guy was an in-studio guest on the Leafs Lunch program on 640 Toronto and was upset by comments made earlier in the day by former Leafs assistant GM Bill Watters who usually co-hosts the show with Jeff Marek but was not present for Domi.

"I've got to tell you Jeff, your other host Bill Watters was on John Oakley this morning and was quite disrupting to me and my family," Domi said.

Asked how Watters had offended him, Domi said that "he said that we've manipulated the Leafs again for the second time."

According to 640 Toronto, Watters had said that Domi's agent, Pat Morris, should be commended for getting such a deal for Domi.

"My wife was very taken (aback) by that and so was I," said Domi.

Marek asked him why.

"You've got a guy like Bill (Watters) ... (He's) been knocking me since he left this team. I don't know why. I just felt enough is enough, I'm sick of listening to that guy."

When Marek attempted to ask another question, Domi interrupted him.

"Jeff, I don't know you. I've never seen you before. I've never been on your show before, and there's a reason for it," Domi said. "Because you guys have your opinions and sometimes they're strong, and they're wrong. And I'm telling you my opinion and that's the way I stand.

"I've been here a long time and I don't need guys throwing stones at me and other people telling me what you guys are saying."
[wtf? and, :lol]

He then thanked co-host Dennis Beyak, who was filling in for Watters, took off his headphones and left the studio.

"Tie Domi has now left," Marek said.

Earlier in the day, Domi was beseeching the media to join a "partnership" that the new collective bargaining agreement has created between the players and the National Hockey League.

"Cut to the chase," Domi told journalists. "We need your guys' help, too, and the more you knock our team, the less it's helping us."

He was reacting to criticism of GM John Ferguson after Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk and Brian Leetch signed with other teams and the Leafs lost out on signing top-tier free agents like Scott Niedermayer, Peter Forsberg and Markus Naslund.

"I just hope that whatever John does, we'll be behind it," he said. "Let's not try and get so negative on the guys we're trying to bring here. Because we want to win and if those guys do come here we need a positive start."

Tie's unique personality - I'd say equal parts overbearing tough-guy, shameless fan suckup, clueless idiot, and oversensitive whiny little bitch - will truly be missed when he retires... of course, I fully expect him to try to leverage his baffling popularity into some sort of cushy Leaf front office gig. :D If nothing else he'll morph into the most annoying and hypocritical ex-Leaf player turned fanboy media scrub around, and damn that'll be pretty fun too.

Wasn't Domi giving Fergie the gears a few days ago when contract talks stalled? :lol

Domi's a wierd guy...as much as he ticks me off, there's a lot about him that I like as well. I've always admired the way he went after bigger guys (and let's face it, at his size everyone's a bigger guy to him), and few athletes have had a more positive impact in the community in terms of charitable causes, and making himself approachable for kids. So it's hard for me to hate the guy. At the same time he really can be full of shit, and he clearly orchestrated the PR to get himself resigned here. But hell, good for him I guess.

The thought of Tie Domi having a 5 minute segment between periods of HNIC fills me with dread and disgust, but the mental image of Coach Domi in an ugly suit with a confused and angry look as his Leafs end the 2010 season 29 and 53 makes me giggle. ;) Just imagine the post game pressers!

:lol :lol :lol No doubt. God I've always hated Domi as a player. Selfish fucker.

P.S. Shinobi makes some good points in that Domi does great charity work and that he doesn't back down (he does now but once didn't) when it comes to fighting bigger dudes. That stupid spin shit move he does has been milked to death already when he fights.

Don Cherry and Tie Domi are both idiots.

So, the Penguins are adding these players to their roster this year:

Mario Lemieux
Evgeni Malkin
Sydney Crosby
Sergei Gonchar
Zigmund Palffy

....dang. Thank God they had little to begin with or I might be afraid!

You forgot the biggest signing....Andre Roy. :D

Zetterberg for Antropov?

No thanks....

Got any links for this one?

Edit: wait, I just read this a page back:

just did some more research

zetterberg is apparently asking for 2.5 million and datsyuk is asking for 4.5 million

so basically there's no way the leafs would be able to bag both
Are you a joke character? You actually thought the wings were looking to get rid of their 2 best young players? Dream on. One if they absolutely have to, but not both.

Oh shit, I didn't see that one coming at all. I would have rather had Kovy, but Ziggy is younger, so it seems to be a better move. I wish they would have locked him up for 4 years instead of 3.

Damn, get Malkin over here now and we got a nice team!

Anyone want Morozov? We can say goodbye to him!

Shit, my NHL2k5 team just got 2 times better!

ESPN reports that the Columbus Blue Jackets have signed restricted free agent forward Rick Nash to a five-year contract worth $27 million US.

Wow

Wow

The Jackets will make the playoffs this year, believe it!

Not until now. It's about to change though.
Who would have predicted teams like Chicago getting players like Khabibulin, Aucoin and Lapointe a few seasons ago? Or the Jackets to land Foote and Berard? Or the Pens to get Palffy and Gonchar?

The NHL is about to change and it'll change for the best.

You say not until now but they just increased the number of teams that can make the playoffs. 20 teams will be playoff teams this year....That's a lot. Doesn't hurt to get excited though. What else is he supposed to say? "We're going to win the cup?" "We're going to get to the second round?" I think his goal is reasonable.

I don't like the idea of 20 teams making the playoffs. It cheapens the sense of accomplishment in actually making the playoffs.
Yes, but more teams in the playoffs and more playoff games means more $$$$$$ and bling and fur coats for their hoes.

I'm excited because the Jackets have never been to the playoffs. You'd be excited too if you weren't dead inside.

And more playoff games means more hockey to watch, which means less dead baseball time between hockey and football!

no.

Dude....this city (especially the media) has been waiting for THE BIG E for years now....If he's officially signed, there will be flares above lake ontario and a giant E-signal will light up the night sky.

I expect nothing less :)

It looks like Pete LaCroix is signing everyone who ever did something against the avs. The Avs just signed Andrew Brunette. Darren McCarty sogned with Calgary a little to quickly I think, must have been what got Holland on the ball on Yzerman. Guess we're gonna go for Zetterberg and Datsyuk next.
