Apparently Smyth is about to sign a 4 yr deal with the Oilers.

It'd be pretty cool if Smyth was the next Yzerman- not in skill/talent level of course, but in staying the course of his career with his first team and leading them most of that time.

Well, since the majority of the players on the teams on NHL94 are retired, they are not part of the individual Players association pool. So in this emulation of the game on 06, they made rosters full of fake players and fake numbers (sometimes)

For the pens for instance, the top line features some misnamed center with the number 56, a winger named something streak or slick (number 58) and another winger misnamed with the number 15.

If you know your teams, it isn't hard to know that that line is Kevin Stevens, Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr.

The emulation plays good. It is a better job then NHL 2002 did for the GBA a few years ago. It controls good.

I dunno, I see Smyth as much more of an Yzerman than a Sakic. Smyth and Yzerman are more highly skilled grinders who lead their teams with both skill and grit, whereas I see Sakic as more of a purely skilled player who leads his teams with his potent offensive power and overall sound play.

Smyth has the best celebrations...ever.

Whenever Canada meets success in the International stage, you know you need that obligatory shot of Smyth going crazy.

Re-watching the boston montreal series has been amazing...so many highs and lows in that series.

Seeing Kyle fucking chump Mclaren take out Zednick with his elbow in game 4 still gets me going. For those who dont remeber, Zednick was flying into the offensive zone at full stride when Kyle skated right up to him and threw up his elbow a second before impact with enough force that im surprised Zedniks head wasn't decapitated right then and there. Zednick ended up missing the rest of the playoffs.

The intent to injure was all over that elbow despite Kyle saying it was an accident.

And man Theodore was on FIRE in game 5. 43 saves, 1 goal. The saves he was making were breathtaking. I had to read his jersey just to make sure it didn't have number 33 on it.

I'd say Theodore's biggest weapon when he's at the top of his game is his focus. No hesitation, just pure focus and reaction.

As long as he comes ready to play this year I see no reason why he cant have a stellar year and even take Loungo's spot as backup come olympic time.

Smyth is more of a leader and hard worker than a pure talented guy. I like him for his character and all that he brings on the ice but I don't see him as a top talent at all.

Man, I still feel for Zednick...the guy was basically on fire and then he goes down so hard you could almost feel it shake his career.

I noticed that too.

That's gonna change in less than a week. I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on all the pre-season games.

Hockey's not only back...but it should be better. I couldn't stand a lot of the clutching and grabbing in the NHL for the past few years. Even reducing the size of goalie pads, however small a change it may seem, is gonna make the game more exciting in my eyes. I'm pumped!

I'd like to even watch the preseason game between Calgary and Edmonton...but unfortunately I'm still in Dallas. Pronger, McCarty, Peca, and Amonte...in addition to the great (in my eyes) rosters of both teams...it would be a treat to watch.

A treat to watch the Flames finally get called for their garbage style of play that is! AHHAHAHAHAHA the trash talking has already begun

Did anyone bother setting up a sportingnews gaf league? If not... i did :D

league: gafhockey
pw: smyth

I might like the sportingnews fantasy hockey better than yahoo. I like watching my franchise value grow! =P

More ppl need to sign up. It's a great little fantasy hockey game - it's easy and a very low time commitment. 30mil dollar salary cap, and you pick 7 players to fill a team. Player value goes up and down based on performance and popularity, and you get 2 trades a week to (hopefully) trade up to get more effective players as the guys you picked (hopefully) go up in value. Since it's a small team size and you can only make 2 roster moves a week, it's not something you have to check very often which is nice if, like me, you are already in 4 other much more time consuming (and costly) hockey pools.

One thing though is that the salary values of the players on TSN seem *much* better than, for example, the player rankings on Yahoo. Which sucks, because I was hoping to abuse the system and score young players for cheap only to find that highly touted young guys are valued much closer to what I think they'll probably be worth. ;) Compare that to Yahoo, who's player rankings don't take the lockout, trades, aging, injuries or anything else into account.

leafs have officially signed czerkawski (successful physical! he's guaranteed for at least 1 period before he fails one! woo!)

Damn,I hope you guys don't forget the name Guillaume Latendresse. I just saw him knock the fuck out of a 6 foot 4, 200 pounds defenceman with a huge hit. I also read that this guy's idol is Todd Bertuzzi. :lol He can score and hit like his idol.

Hope he makes the team soon.

Latendresse is quite a steal so far, He impressed at the junior world cup camp and now is stealing the show at the Habs rookie camp. You can't compare him with Price though, Price is an 18 years old goaltender and for that age, he's very advanced and VERY mature.

Our draft this year s far is looking very good. Price did well in his first game in the rookie camp and Melanson (our goalie instructor) is very impressed with him so far, Latendresse is dominating, even against the older leafs rookie camp and Mikus is showing some flashes of talent, he looks like a Zednik so far with more upside.

What should the lines be like for the Leafs?

Antropov/Sundin/Czerkawski
Stajan/Allison/ONeill
Tucker/Lindros/Ponikarovski or Steen
and the rest...

What do you think? I still think Lindros' line need a better winger.

What were the lines like last year for them?

Actually Lindros doesnt need a better winger he needs to be a winger. IMO, he's a big waste on the 3rd line and Stajan, the rookie, shouldnt be on the 2nd for the start of the season.

Fuck, Yahoo is pissing me off with it's shitty player list. Everyone who glances at it knows their rankings sucked 2 years ago and because they haven't been updated since they're almost useless now. But I'm talking about not having players at all, there's been at least 4 or 5 young NHLers I've searched for that aren't listed. Rookies generally aren't available until they've played at least one game, but the guys I'm looking for have all played at least part of one season - and I just spent a couple of minutes futilely searching for 2 dmen who have played the full 03-04 season. How the hell can they just lose players? One example I don't mind sharing is Jean-Sebastian Aubin. I was just going to put him on a watch list thinking he might win the #2 spot over Tellqvist and the Leafs backup should log some serious minutes, and he's not on Yahoo at all despite playing in the NHL for at least a few years before the lockout.

It feels like half the younger players I've looked for expecting them to be greatly improved since the last NHL season are just missing. It's mainly a problem for me because my "real" yahoo league drafts next week - and we have 16 teams in that fucker. We're all going to be fighting over fantasy scrubs like Trent Klatt, Garth Snow and Saprykin, and not having x number of quality players available is going to suck.

Rocket9, Pat Quinn says Allison and Lindros will play Center so he can't be a winger.

Also, Steve Thomas and Mike Keane will be at the training camp. I don't know what to think of it.

As well, Deadmarsh has stated that he wants to play alongside Allison... hmmmm :D

If I had it my way, i would have:

Lindros/ Sundin / Oneill
Deadmarsh/ Allison / Czerkawski

Holy SHIT!

Ouch. Thanks Quinn, this should make our job easier as a division rival ;)

Didnt Steve Thomas just signed with Detroit? (too lazy to look...) Also, I hear Marchment will also be at training camp. Oh and let's not forget that you guys just signed Brad Brown. What's with all the ex-habs?

And then three weeks into the season the lines would look like this:

Czerkawski / Sundin / Oneill

Oh come now, you can't just post pics of Tie Domi crying and expect to prove a point. That hypocritical little bitch has literally bawled his eyes out dozens of times in his career, it means nothing! Suspensions, brawls, mean old Daniel Alfredsson being a big meanie, getting eliminated, not getting a contract extension in a timely fashion... that pic could be from any of the many many times Tie has felt the need to blubber for the cameras.

Tie Domi is an idiot and Pat Quinn is not that far behind. He annoys the hell out of me with his "geezer" stance and not going with younger players:

KIDS ARE always welcome at the Air Canada Centre, except on the ice with the Maple Leafs.

Cracking another veteran-laden Pat Quinn team remains a challenge for prospects in the Leafs system, even though this year's list of training camp hopefuls is among the most promising in years. The youngsters' choices are clear: Either burn their post-1980 birth certificates, apply fake whiskers or just knock the coaching staff's socks off when camp begins on Monday. :lol

"We have kids this year that we want to watch closely," Quinn said yesterday. "I'm getting good reports from the rookie camp on Alex Steen and the big Swedish kid (6-foot-3, 209-pound defenceman Staffan Kronvall).

"But it's a fact that guaranteed contracts set up the roster you're going to have. If (kids) do make it, the decision becomes whether you eat one of those big contracts."

Suck a dick Quinn.

Leafs sign Brad Brown, invite Mike Keane to camp, invite Steve Thomas to camp, and also invite Bryan Marchment to camp.....

Wow..just wow..

:lol :lol :lol

Im downloading as soon as my Internet stop screwing up (so sometime next year). It better have the Komisarek hit on Thornton or else i'll be pissed :D

Did Chistov sign a deal for the upcoming season in Russia? I thought I had read that somewhere, but it's not listed on TSN. I'm pretty sure I read that he's got a 1 year no-escape deal with his old Russian team, and it was as much to get his game together as anything since he'd been very disappointing for the Ducks in 04 and he was average at best last year in the AHL. I guess the Ducks could trade his rights as a RFA, right?

Even ignoring that, it's a weird rumour. It seems like it could happen... but why? Klee and Carney are pretty much the same player to my mind, and why trade Antropov and a pick for a former first rounder like Chistov who may never become a full-time NHLer? Maybe it'd make sense if you broke down the salaries, but I'm too lazy to do that.
