Cover of the ESPN mag NHL preview issue. I'm amazed ESPN is even discussing the NHL, let alone devoting a cover of its magazine to it. Toews' face is hilarious though. I wonder what he's so pissed about. :lol
I heard that they're predicting the Finals match-up to be Blackhawks/Bruins. I'd be happy with that.

I like how Huet doesn't belong in the same league as the other guys on that cover.

Versteeg or Seabrook should be there.

I'm picking Canucks or Blackhawks for the final. I'll be happy with the Ducks if they go another 2nd round loss, but I'm not too confident on their Ds ability to clear the crease lately.

Versteeg isn't going to be with the 'Hawks longer than this season. Huet shouldn't be with them long term but no one is going to take him. Seabrook or Keith would both have been better picks for the cover.

I'm watching this NHL on the Fly Eastern Conference preview on the NHL Network, and in the first ten minutes, they have shown the clip of Crosby hoisting the Cup five times. Christ.

Better get used to it. During the preseason I've seen the Penguins Stanley Cup DVD commercial maybe 50 times, and in last season's NHL commercials it already seemed as if the Pens had won the cup, so this year they'll probably just show Crosby lifting the cup and add a tagline like "Crosby. Watch him on [insert channel]. Crosby. Crosby, Sidney, Crosby. "

Try listening to the NHL channel on satiellite, litterally every commercial break has a pens cup DVD commercial, it's beyond annoying

I think you should buy it; it's a quality purchase.

This is just a friendly reminder that the last time meaningful hockey was played, this team was hoisting the Stanley Cup. Feels good, man.

I'm sure Ovechkin will tear it up this year and he'll get more attention as the season goes on.

If the rangers had won the cup and that was their DVD I still wouldn't have bought it because the marketing was so godamn annoying
Of course, I wouldn't have to worry about that because they wouldn't be shoving the rangers down everybodies throats like they do with the pens, like they didn't do last year with Detroit

From a marketing standpoint, it makes sense. The Pens are one of the most popular NHL brands out there, and in the top ten sports brands of any of the professional leagues. I get annoyed with the overexposure too, but I understand why they do it.

Robbie Schremp is no longer an Edmonton Oiler :(
After 5 years of stumbling around the Oilers' system, while fanboys masturbated to his YouTube shootout goals at home, he's been claimed off waivers by the Islanders.

Farewell sweet prince.
I'm secretly hoping he'll surprise playing with Tavares on the Islanders' PP

My last draft was today

C - Getzlaf
C - Savard
LW - Hartnell
LW - Kunitz
RW - Semin
RW - Langenbrunner
D - Dan Boyle
D - Tomas Kaberle
D - Braydon Coburn
D - Jaroslav Spacek
Bench - Lupul, Briere, Cole, Schenn
G - Huet
G - Emery

If my goaltending is decent I'll be good

Can't believe Hawks lost to cup....this game last year was amazing with Callahan dekeing the goaltender of some Russian team out of his shorties with 10 seconds left in the game to win it

The only predictions I read that predicted a Cup winner was The Hockey News, and they picked Philadelphia.
Also, the Canucks sent Hodgson back to Brampton. I guess the Canucks are kinda deep even without him, but it would have been nice to see what he could do, since he doesn't really have anything to prove or much to grow or learn from in junior.

Based on his play in the pre-season, he wasn't going to do much. He's still 19 and another year in Junior won't hurt him, whereas rushing him into the NHL could.

No, it isn't. That ranking you posted is bullshit and has nothing to do with popularity or KingHenrik's post. The Pens are not even in the top 10 NHL brands.

And everyone picked the Wings to win last year.

I think the Pens have a good chance of repeating, they haven't lost anything vital and Malkin and Crosby aren't exactly on the decline. But the year after winning it seems like many teams don't even make the playoffs, and the ones that do have early exits. There's a reason no one has repeated in 12 years. It's hard as fuck to do. If the Pens stay injury free like last year they'll be one of the top contenders for sure, but I'm hoping Washington and Philly have made enough additions to become serious threats for them in the East. No more easy rides to the final for the Pens please. The Pens need a team that beats them up on the way to the SCF, like Anaheim did with the Wings.

I hardly think the Pens had an easy ride last season. They beat their two biggest rivals, the Flyers and Caps, in the first two rounds, admittedly breezed by Carolina, and then took seven games to defeat Detroit. They had an easier time the year before, though.

Crosby already injured himself in the pre-season and had to sit out a game, so I'm worried about his health as the season progresses. We'll see.

I guess it depends what you're measuring.

Makes you wonder what kind of an impact he would have had if he didn't have a back injury that sidelined him for a month.

I guess we'll find out next preseason. I guess he'll have to wait until 2010-2011 season to hoist the cup.

I guess you're right, I didn't watch much of the preseason. I thought worse case scenario he'd have a year like Stamkos did, who despite an awful start picked it up towards the latter half of the season and now has a year of experience. Hopefully his back will be better a year from now.

He looked really slow. They kept saying that his back was fine, but it seemed like he may not have been over his injury. On a lot of other teams, he probably would have had a shot at sticking with the team, but the Canucks have so much depth and so many bubble players that it was just easier to send him down. It's a little surprising that they didn't keep him around for 9 games, though.

It's lame that he had to go back to Brampton and couldn't make the jump to the AHL, though.

From what I hear, he still has some nerve damage that keeps him from using the full power of his right leg. That will slow him down. I mean, he can't seriously be that slow all the time. I didn't see him win one race for the puck.

All I have to say is wow, speaking of which, I just played as those guys today in NHL 10 I believe, not a bad team.

speaking of which, I tried a rookie, casual game as the 100th season Canadians vs Great Britain with only 5 minute periods, final score was 47-0
:lol

I wouldn't worry about Crosby, lots of players have groin issues during pre-season.

As for the easy rides, yeah I think the Pens have had two fairly easy rides (up to the finals). I'm not taking anything away from the Pens, the Wings had a very easy ride in 2008.
Even in the Washington series that went to 7 games, it was never that physical, never very long OT's, and game 7 was over before it started. As someone who watched every game of both that series and the Wings-Ducks series, I can tell you they were as different as two series can be (though both very, very entertaining in their own ways).
The Pens need a team in the East that doesn't try to beat them on skill, but just tries to beat them the fuck up, like the Ducks did against the Wings in 2007 and last year.

and I'm guessing that Philly REALLY wants to be that team this year
