This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Haha. It's really gonna be even more satisfying when the Bruins run away with the Northeast again this year. ;)

I can't believe the season starts in two days, though. Holy crap, summer flew by. I'm bummed that the Habs/Leafs game is on at the same time as Caps/B's, since I'm sure it's going to be wholly entertaining.

Mats Sundin has scheduled a press-conference for about 2 1/2 hours from now.

Chances are pretty good that it's to announce his retirement.

This is the last day of the off-season thread. It has served us well. On to bigger and better things, including game 1 tomorrow, and my big screen TV that I'm getting today in preparation. :D

Not really, to be honest. Pierre Maguire slurping over anyone is annoying. Right now his favourite boy is Mike Richards, but he's also been known to slobber all over Crosby, which got annoying. CBC is guilty of it too, but they need the Canadian angle.

Whats the book on Martin Skoula? He just got signed as the pens 7th d-men. I remember he was sort of promising as a rook in Colorado, but I lost track of him over the years.

Can any Wild fans give the lowdown?

He was a giveaway machine in Colorado.

I dunno, but the Pensblog called the move a head-scratcher.

Not sure why this was even done. We already have 3 very good offensive minded guys, and Skoula was touted as being more offensive back in the day.... I think they should have given the spot to one of the rooks and saved the money for tinkering with deadline deals.

i'm still thinking shero has a few trades up his sleaves this year, Dupuis is on the bubble for sure...

SK = Grabovski attitude, lesser puckhandler, better overall player

Get rid of him for all I care. And trade Andrei too if it means we're getting anything close to a 3rd or 2nd liner.

We should probably ship him to Toronto, in fact. They seem to like the traitors and team breakers.

While I wish we had shipped out the K Bros, I am glad Plekanec is still around. He had just as awful of a year as those two did, but I think hes going to bounce back nicely.

He has the work ethic to do so, but I'm not sure he's as talented as both the K Bros...

This is very likely the last chance I'll ever have to post this picture of Mats with any relevance.

Have a happy retirement.

I just saw some loser in a #28 Habs jersey with a random name "Chipchura" on his back:lol

Is that a type of cake?

Gotta love the great "chemistry" on the Habs...Andrei Markov refuses the "C" because he doesn't want the pressure and then that AK loser wants out....

So many leaders on that team!:lol

First, the rumor about Markov not wanting to be captain is false. He never reject the offer, and he's more vocal on and off the ice this pre-season. He was a A last season, and I think while he wouldn't make a great captain, nobody can deny his on-ice leadership for the team.

Second, It's Sergei Kostitsyn, not Andrei, that was suspend for missing his rendez-vous in Hamilton. He was never considered a leader, just a good young player with attitude problem...

Damn ignorant hater. smh.

Baum rejected both Balsillie and the NHL's bids...

Yotes to KC for chump change?

The official Judge Report is pretty interesting.

Coyotes losses since 2004 (operating loss / total loss):
2004: 49m / 75m
2005: 26m / 50m
2006: 31m / 75m
2007: 107m / 117m
2008: 54m / 72m

From what I'm reading, it sounds like the Judge is saying:

To the NHL: You can step up and buy the Coyotes ONLY if you agree to pay off Gretzky and Moyes too (something they clearly wouldn't want to do due to the Balsillie thing.)

To PSE (Balsillie): Can't take your money unless you work something out with the NHL first.

Basically, the NHL can win the game now, but to do so they're going to have to do something they really didn't want to do.

No need to lump Andrei in with his borther. He had a bad year, but he does have the talent. Sergei on the other hand is immature and has a major sense of entitlement despite how terrible he played last year.

Judge Baum is a clown. He wasted all that time and made a decision that he could have made weeks, or even months ago, and to that all I have to say is L.O.fucking.L.

Not that I necessarily disagree with his final decision though, the NHL should be allowed to sell teams that play in their league. But I think the NHL now knows that the team is probably not gonna rebound in Phoenix without a playoff appearence this season, there was way too much damage done this summer.

Canes just extended Cam Ward - 37.8mil over 6 years. Even though he's one of the best in the league, the cost seems a little steep.

Eh. He's good but that does seem a bit too steep. It could be worth it in the long run.

It is steep.
Ward will make $3.5M this year.
He's had 1 mvp playoffs and 1 excellent season (last year).
He would have been a restricted free agent after this year.
With that said, if he continues to play like last year, it'll be worth it.

:lol Coyotes. All that time in court and we're back to square 1. For what it's worth, I think the judge made a rational decision. But damn did it take long. Now what? :lol I guess the NHL will reluctantly buy the team and then pawn it. It'll obviously be interesting to see where the team ends up - Phoenix (unlikely but possible), Hamilton (unlikely but a little more likely than before), or some other market like Kansas City (possible).

Settle down man, it's just hockey. No need to yell at Forza cause he pointed out the Habs have nobody willing to lead.

I dunno...I think he came up with the only realistic decision that didn't involve setting hotly contested precident. He did really underestimate how unwilling the NHL was to go to mediation, though, didn't he? :lol

Balsillie's deal always had merit in the judge's eyes because of those losses; they were so bad that even the NHL was forced to indirectly say they couldn't guarantee the team stayed past this season. It got further credibility because the NHL's deal was basically never in consideration - Baum would rather fold the franchise than let the NHL pick-and-choose what creditors to pay back.

In fact, if the NHL can't swallow the idea of paying back Moyes and Gretzky, the Coyotes are going to fold and we'll have an exciting supplemental draft and/or expansion team to look forward to. Gretzky definitely won't be involved in the league again until somebody pays up.

The only options seem to be:

a) Swallow the bitter pill and sell to Balsillie anyway
b) Swallow the bitter pill and payoff Moyes/Gretzky, then buy the team and pawn it
c) Never give in and put a positive spin on folding the team :lol

If any of you have DirecTV and like hockey, read on.

Call up and do the "I want to cancel" option. You will be redirected to customer retention. Tell them you are a huge hockey fan and that you want to switch to Dish Network as they have Versus and offered to give you NHL Center Ice for free as an incentive to switch. DirecTV will offer to give you Center Ice for free to stay as a customer. Profit.

Both my dad and I did this, and theres a big post on HFBoards about it working as well. I guess DirecTV is really under orders to keep customers through this whole Versus thing.
