What the heck? I think Zapages infected Deepthroat. I didn't know it was a communicable disease!

Hell I just realised that I am now incapable of viewing anyone who like PoP2 as anything other than a Ubisoft plant. Thanks a lot Za, you suck.

Did they stay true to the whole Arabian Nights type setting?

I understand the art was changed, hopefully that doesnt mean they took out the wonderful enchanting arab environments. One of the high points of the original PoP

is there a big difference between the ps2 and xbox version? cause the my ps2 version umm seems lacking in the graphics department.

The game is really good so far except for the prince's damn one liners.

Compared to first PoP?
I've heard the GC and XBox versions have smoother framerate. They porbably look about as much better from the PS2 version as the PoP 1 looked better on them. Does the game support prog scan for all three versions (like the first one did)? Does it have any hidden emulated games (again like first one)?

as much as i dislike warrior within's "direction," i really want to like the game. partly because i liked sands of time so much. but partly because the sequel addresses a question in my mind. some gamers are obsessively focused on a game's intention, or on its purity. they roundly despise any connections to the culture at large, they mistrust "mature content," and in cases they're even wary of narrative. they often speak vaguely of games as art. they tend to fixate on hype, and they tend to like nintendo. i actually share some of their preferences, but i'm not as conservative, i hesitate to speak of games as art, and i think talent is more important than intention. warrior within's intentions are all wrong. it cynically abandons the tone and indeed genre of its predecessors, it's gratuitously "dark," and it's got a nu metal soundtrack. but it's still the work of the talent that brought us sands of time. and i'd like to see talent win out. that's part of why i like jak II. it's so wrong, and yet it's pretty good. forum meta-discussion! it's fantastic! i'll pick up my gamerush preorder this friday. even if i hate it, at least i paid no real money for it.

8.7ed by Gamespot as well!

glitches in Xbox and PS2 versions:
Some technical flaws in the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions of the game also mar the experience somewhat. The Xbox version is prone to audio glitches. Certain sound effects get stuck, and, at other times, scenes that should have voice in them are cut off completely. This is a shame, because the sound effects in the game, aside from some ham-handed voice acting from the prince, are excellent and impactful. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 2 version's flaws are graphical. As a result, the game has a slightly choppier frame rate than the other versions. While it's not enough to hinder gameplay or combat, it does detract a bit from an otherwise beautiful-looking game. We didn't notice any sound or frame rate issues with the GameCube version of Warrior Within, however.

GLITCHES? GC version is the most glitch free?! No wonder this game sucks UBI priorities are on the wrong console. :P

actually the Ps2 version does look worse then than POP1 ps2 version for some reason. I dont mean itnerms of art i mean graphically its jaggier and seems to have slow down and lots of fog. Its just doesnt look as polished.

Okay, you've swung me over to at least give it a rental, you have a point there, it is an undervalued component of the industry.

My impressions from the Gamespot review thread:

I played the game for a few hours last night. Here are some thoughts on it:

1. Graphics are very nice. Level design architecture is very good as well. Art... well, so far I'm not liking it much.

2. Music is AWFUL. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. Just when you get to a fighting scene, a rock riff will kick in and will REPEAT ITSELF TIME AFTER TIME. Loud, obnoxious and unimaginative music. Did I mention how AWFUL it was?

3. Fighting engine is not good at all, so far. It might be that in the few hours that I played I still haven't gotten it, but to me it seems they tried to somewhat copy Ninja Gaiden's fighting engine and failed miserably. First of all, it's unreliable. You are in these buildings with cliffs and ledges and, well, the Free Fighting Form becomes the Freaking Falling Form when you try to use the available moves. Not only that, but it's just plain unreliable as many moves are context sensitive and in the midst of a hectic battle trying to pull a move can take the form of another move and cause you heavy damage. I am just dreading these fighting scenes as I don't really feel in control. Hopefully this will improve as I play more.

4. I can't help but feel the game has just completely lost the 'fantastical setting' of the first one. It looks great technically, but also very generic. I am very very disappointed in the game, so far, which is a shame considering I loved PoP: SoT.

5. Platforming so far has been great. No issues here. It has been quite faithful to the first one, with a couple of moves having been added (swinging ropes from side to side on a wall, falling off a curtain while being able to jump from it.)

6. The game tries WAY TOO HARD to be mature. The dialogue is pretty generic and has some really awkward phrases ("YOU BITCH!") that have made me put my WTF/cringe face. Also, whenever you die, the screen is splattered with blood before Game Over comes. I just don't get it. Again, they seem to be going after the audience that rejected the previous version and definitely not the ones that supported it.

As for which version I got, it's the Xbox one. So far I haven't encountered any glitches, sound or otherwise.

I'm really enjoying this so far...

It starts out a bit slow, but the game REALLY picks up. Also, I have the XBOX version now and I can safely say that the difference between the GC and XBOX version is like night and day. Some areas look so much better to the point where you'd swear you were actually in a different area. The awful dithering is not present, there is a lot more in the way of lighting effects, and the framerate is better.

dark: How's the platforming? :)

Won't have my copy until monday.. Deep am cry :<

The platforming is GREAT actually! Possibly even better than the original!

Not only that, there has been MORE platforming and exploration than combat. There is less combat than the original game! You probably encounter battles more often, but they often consist of as few as one or two enemies. PoP1 always had you stuck in those massive fights with respawning enemies that would last for a long time. Nothing like that here...

Also, I really like the combat this time around. There is a LOT more variety per battle now. IJoel was complaining about fighting near ledges, but I love that! If you do it right, you can basically throw most of your enemies right off the ledge. If you happen to flip off along with them, Prince grabs the ledge automatically. I also love disarming enemies. It feels very nice!

One final thing...

The actual castle feels more like an actual "whole" this time. I felt that the original game felt a bit too segmented and "designed". This area really feels like a singular castle (kind like ICO, though certainly not THAT good :P).

Yeah im convinced, im gonna pick this up. I was in the gym when i saw the PoP advert, looked awesome. And the comments about the awesome platforming sealed it.

I just hope that the Xbox version is region free like PoP1, i cant be bothered to import the Xbox version. theres no way im buying it for my PAL PS2 either.

thast what im talking about :D

Im gonna set it to easy so i can breeze through the fighting bits and concentrate on the wonderfull platforming

I've played a few hours and yeah, Dark10x is right. There isn't really any difference between the amount of combat in WW than in SOT. In WW you just frequently fight 1 to 3 baddies at once instead of the huge waves in SOT. It seems a lot more natural. And yeah, fighting on a cliff is pretty cool. The platforming is like exactly the same and there's still more platforming than combat.

So I bought this in a moment of weakness today. The first game was in my top 5 for last year and despite my reservations about the changes I couldn't help myself.

I really hate the opening tutorial level. From what people have said, I assume this is the same as the demo? If that's true, bad idea. It's not very interesting though it does throw some of the obvious changes out at you. Darker prince. Enemy with metal-thonged ass. Rock guitar. When their fighting at the end of this entry to the game, and he stops after she cuts him in the face to yell, "You Bitch!" --- I almost stopped cold and returned the game right there. It seemed such a betrayl of the simple yet well-pitched emotion of the first. It was everything I had feared about the re-working of the game.

So...I stuck with it...and I'm glad I did. I'm only an hour or so beyond that part and though the style has indeed changed they seemed to have given the opening moments the bucketful of angsty material and concentrated more on the dark but engaging world of platforming for the parts I'm at now.

I actually don't mind the guitar with the Arabic vocals mixed in. It works. And the environments and enemy design have greatly improved from the beginning. The early evil bird boss is beautiful. I'm intrigued by the idea of the Prince's fate hunting him and it goes some way to appeasing the decision to make him so much more immediately dark and haggard. It's as if some of the dark effects of his actions from the first tale took hold of him shortly after it ended. Of course, if the developers aren't as successful in integrating the narrative in this game (as reviews have said) then I'm just making excuses for what will be a wasted opportunity.

That said, the combat is much improved and the platforming is balls out and clever and I can be satisfied with that.

About glitches: I'm playing the GameCube version and have encountered LOTS of audio glitches so far. Music will cut out, voice acting will cut out, music will skip. And once -- oh, this is precious -- I locked swords with Time Bitch the second time you fight her, and her HEAD DISAPPEARED. Just DISAPPEARED.

I'm wondering if I should add this stuff into my review or what.

EDIT: Fighting on ledges... I like being able to toss enemies into the drink, but I really really hate when the Prince is near a wall and you just press B but instead of swinging his sword OOPS he decides to jump off the wall and PROPEL HIMSELF OFF THE LEDGE TO HIS SWIFT DEATH.

I haven't gotten any glitches yet, though it has the same strange thing as the first with the voice levels being too low compared to the music by default. Wouldn't you use the GC equivalent buttons of X or Y to attack? Why would that launch him from the ledge?

Got the game today. No glitches so far (about 2-3 hours in) Xbox.

Seriously, this game outblows Sands of Time by a mile. So much better in every regard. And the platforming rocks!

The Dahaka is pretty cool too. I like the moments you have with him :D

I'm almost done with PoP2 (I think,
I just got the wall-breaking sword
) in preparation for KotOR2 to take over my life.

The game gets a lot better after the first couple of hours, but I still hate the frequent combat (it seems like a chore before the fantastic platforming challenges.)

I have to give props to the level designers. FANTASTIC platforming, and level architecture/design. It's really impressive and beats the original in that respect. One thing I wish there was more of, is smaller puzzles that require more thought (smaller in the sense that they aren't really a platfoming puzzle, but a switch/lever one for instance.)

The story did disappoint me (again, so far as I'm not quite done yet) with the SUPER EXPECTED outcoming. I saw it coming during the first couple of hours.

All things said, the game deserves to be played for the fantastic platforming and level design. A true Prince of Persia sequel (with none of that "hey look at me, I'm mature and hardcore" bs) would've been a true GOTY contender, but as it stands, it's just another good game released this year.

A quick background note- Azhi Dahaka was a demonic fiend from Persian mythology created by Ahriman, the Great Evil. Azhi Dahaka was depicted as either a huge dragon with three heads each with three sets of eyes and fangs or also as a human with serpentine qualities.

Final Fantasy Legend III had a boss (Dahak) based on him which was surprisingly accurate for a character taken from mythology in a game.

is it just me or is this game a lot more frustrating than the last?

i have just come to the first Daiblarg (or whater it is called) chase and the game is really a lot of trial and error.

They Splinter Cellified POP :(

I beat the game on Normal just one minute ago. It was indeed awesome. I was even amazed over how cool they made the Dahaka :)

Anyway..

Did anyone else not get the ending? I mean, what happened to Babylon? :S

I've only been able to put in a half hour so far, so I'm barely out of the tutorial portions of the game, and obviously have not been challenged in any way shape or form.

Very early impressions?

I hate the character art.
I hate the music.
I miss the classic PoP look and sound the first one surprisingly succeeded in capturing.
I love the environments, despite the dramatic mood shift.
I still loathe the combat.

If the environments and the environmental puzzles pan out well, I will probably like this game almost as much as the original. (Which I thought was very good, but FAR, FAR, FAR from anything even remotely close to GotY.)

PS - Artbook sucks kok. At least it was free.

The platforming is great Meijlan. You'll be amazed how wrong the haters are :P

The battle is still a little dull though, but much MUCH better than in SoT. And just wait till the Dahaka gets near you. Awesome, just awesome sequenses!
