Some info:

# Rapunzel – Mandy Moore
# Flynn Ryder – Zachary Levi

The movie's visual style will be based on the painting "The Swing", by the French Rococo artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard.[4] Because director Glen Keane wanted this to be an animated movie that looked and felt like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic in 3D, he first had a seminar called "The Best of Both Worlds", where he, with 50 Disney animators (CGI artists and traditional artists), focused on the pluses and minuses of each style.[5] Because of advancements in computer technology, many basic principles of animation used in traditional animated movies but which have been absent in CGI films due to technical limitations are now becoming possible also in this field of animation, where they will be used together with the potential offered by CGI. Keane has stated numerous times that he is trying to make the computer "bend its knee to the artist" instead of having the computer dictate the artistic style and look of the film. By making the computer become as "pliable as the pencil," Keane's vision of a "three dimensional drawing" seems within reach, with the artist controlling the technology. Because many of the techniques and tools that were required to give the film the quality Keane demanded of it didn't exist when the project was started, WDFA had to make them on their own.[4]

To create the impression of a drawing, Non-photorealistic rendering is going to be used, making the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions.

I love the look of this movie. The characters look exactly like Glen Keane's 2D art.

I've been anticipating this thing for so many years. I remember back in 2004 thinking how far away its original 2007 release date was.

I lol'd at myself.

:/

edit: not really glad at the fact that Keane was booted off the director's chair. hopefully disney can still churn out a decent flick.

Not to burst the bubble, but most of the groundbreaking stuff they were attempting towards the start, like making it feel like a painting or getting it to feel more hand drawn was abandoned. It's a very traditional CG feature right now, and isn't exactly looking great from what people around the picture are saying. It's been going through revisions like crazy, and Glen Keane even took an absence from the film at one point - when he stepped down as director.

That said, Disney isn't happy about how Princess and The Frog is performing I can't imagine, so they'll probably be interested in how this performs in determining their future. It's a good time for them to get something out there garnering interest for this movie.

Well, there's a 2D Winnie the Pooh movie which will probably do pretty well, I would think.

The Pooh films always do well for them. I'm sure this next one will be no exception. It probably won't match 'Princess and the Frog', but it won't have a 100 million dollar budget, either...

I'm hopeful, but it seems like it's always been a bit of a troubled project.
As far as the "painterly" look, Bolt had a lot of that, and it looks pretty great, so I can see them at least going that far.

They only have themselves to blame for the performance of that movie.

It´s all about bearing yourself right, girls.

This looks interesting and I really want to support real animation, but I still don´t know if I can get anybody to see The Princess and the Frog with me. But I´ll buy it on blu-ray, I swear!

I saw it in theaters 3 times, and I've managed to get 8 different people to come along in total. And every last person enjoyed it immensely. I'm sure you could find somebody who'd be willing to go.

You know, it's amazing. The people that absolutely refuse to see the movie always say something like, "Oh. That princess thing? I think I'll pass".

I wonder if the film would have done better if they had called it "The Marvelous Frog Adventure" or something ambigious like that. It's really not a "Ew, girly cooties!" kind of film at all. But because it has 'princess' in the title, I have noticed a lot of people who immediately dismiss it without knowing a single thing about it.

It's a shame.

Saw this on another site earlier. Prince is cute. Love the murals.

Does anyone know a forum/site/community/blog that's highly active and organized that posts animated movie news/info? I've been googling all morning and haven't found anything I really like (though IMDB was close, as it had it's own animated movie forum, but it was really messy). I always feel like I'm behind. :(

Looks rather interesting.

I am still waiting for them to adapt Rumpelstiltskin though. That would be a fantastic movie.

Damn. Wanted this to be 2D. But still..it might be good I guess.

Cartoon Brew, maybe?

Saw this on Slashfilm. Seeing this shot makes me excited about the project again.

They had these interesting details as well . . .

Previous director Glen Keane developed a new look for this computer animated film, which is said to look and feel more like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic, but in 3D. Apparently the film uses a non-photorealistic rendering technique which will make the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions. The movie’s visual style is being based on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”.

This could be really interesting, helping distinguish Walt Disney Animation Studio CG from Pixar CG. I would LOVE to have the two different flavors to look forward to from the Mouse House. No more waiting for WDAS to catch up tech wise. This looks like the project that might do it.

First Sanders, now Keane. Damn Disney and its hate of "too quirky", "uniquely expensive" directors.

I feel you on Sanders, hated to see him go. Although, when I watch "Meet the Robinsons," there is a point in that movie where everything is COMPLETELY DERAILED with quirk overload, namely when they're introducing all the family member. The whole movie went off on a complete tangent. I can't help but think that this is what scared off Lasseter from all things quirky.
