The england rugby team have reached two finals in two consectutive world cups.

The england football team reached a world cup final over 40 years ago

I would have posted in this thread more often if I had remembered it was here. I don't usually watch rugby, but during the world cups I really get into it.

Congrats to England, it was a totally deserved victory, although the match itself wasn't that great (but maybe I've been spoilt by the excellent quarterfinals of the previous weeks).

Habana. Game over, Argentina.

South Africa V England final. It definitely won't be one-sided - Wilkinson and their recent victories still fresh in the mind will ensure this - but I can't help believing that the Cup is going back to SA after 12 years. :D

Yay! South Africa Won! :D

Well we know how the previous match between England and SA ended but there have been alot of surprises this World Cup so I wouldn't underestimate them yet(although it would be a major upset if they did win as they don't deserve it).

:lol and our expectations weren't that great from the start either the EXACT opposite of what would happen to the England football team before the world cup.

England v SA eh at least it won't be a whitewash like last time.

I'm still trying to figure out how England beat the Aussies, nevermind the hosts France in a titanic struggle. Had a great day yesterday watching both the England/Estonia and England/France games at seperate bars. Can't wait to see the final...pretty certain SA will do us over again, but it's great just seeing them get this far against all the odds.

I think England will win again. They weren't expected to beat Australia, they did. Neither France, they did. Now South Africa (probably) are going to stop them?
South Africa have already played England in the pool stages though, and won 36-0. England have definitely improved since then, but that much? We'll see.

SA are nothing compared to Aussies and hosts.
This is bullshit.

They got to the Australians in tactical mastery of the scrum and rucks. Australian Rugby Union boss is now saying that instead of paying $$$ for wingers/centres, it's time we start focusing on our scrums and forwards. Some people will say it's due to Stephen Larkham not playing but they can bite it as far as I'm concerned - he's not a forward and each time we got into a ruck phase we were demolished.

Anyway, good on the dark horses Springboks. Sad about Argentina going but what can you do? Won't be surprised in the least if South Africa claim it as I considered them in the top 3 of teams to win the Cup.

Will be a very interesting final considering the group stage clash the two teams had.

People underestimate how good England actually are in getting to the breakdowns, and actually doing something when they get there. Too many teams still struggle with over/under-committing, even at this level, and they get punished against a side like England.

Also, our defense has been solid for the past couple of games - France very rarely looked scary in attack (except for that tiny chip in the middle of the 2nd half) and England were unlucky on a couple of penalties.

I cant see us going down hard to South Africa - S.A actually have to get the ball to Habana before he can score with it!

That is quite hilarious as England were complete and utter poke at the breakdown against SA in the pool games. I had never seen a team get so dominated in international rugby. Eng were committing 5 players to SA 2 and were still getting out-muscled and blown-off.
They weren't even that convincing against Aus there either despite the Australian forward pack being a joke. Okay it's mainly their frontrow but they had seagulls in Sharp and Elsom.

South Africa should by all means destroy the Eng forward pack at the ruck. They're too slow to get there and over commit when they do. The only thing that will stand England have a chance in this match is if South Africa revert to 10 man rugby of old. Once you start spreading the ball and speeding up the game England have no chance.
It's going to be a repeat of the '99 WC final where one side was lucky to be there in the end and over-performed by all expectations but comes up short.

I don't really understand Rugby yet, but I must say that Bryan Habana could be starting at something for any American Football team I've ever seen. That dude is amazing and I hope he raises the level of awareness of Rugby in the US.

God bless the Pumas for making the French weep even more. They had the glory chance of being able to play in a Final on their home ground but fucked it up. The only thing they can take back from this is that they kept up the hoodoo of All Blacks not winning a World Cup since it first started.

I'm contemplating on staying up for the Final but it's broadcast here live at 4am :(

Yep, the Pumas have been pretty awesome all through this competition. I really hope they get included in the Tri-Nations soon. We're all getting sick of it anyway, so they extend it to three games between each team?!

I think that brings the pumas up to 5th in the world. Hopefully that shows they have what it takes tom join the tri nations. Once they start playing some more internationals watch out all blacks:D .

If that does happen, it just won't feel the same. I mean, Quad-Nations? :lol Besides the name thing (I'm sure they'll work out a less awkward name than that... hopefully) it'd be great to have Argentina recognized in the Southern Hemisphere for the quality they've shown in the World Cup this year. There's no excuse really, outside of stolid inertia. But it never pays to underestimate how strong the allure of the status quo can be to so many people.

The main issue tonight though, is the big game. My prediction: South Africa should win. They've been the in-form team of the tournament. Not quite early-tournament New Zealand, but that wasn't against the toughest of competition in any case. But overall, they definitely deserve the victory from an objective point of view and the statistics on tries, points, etc. show it that way. However, England have shown the mental toughness to win it. They're the defending champions, and the fact that they're at the stage to win it again, well, that should be something to remember not just for their opposition, but for everyone else, too. They can win this, but only if South Africa collapse or decide to play the game on England's terms, and not their own.

Therefore, England will need all their passion to overcome a truly stellar South African side in my mind. In the end though, it'll be a great game to watch. Eight and a half hours left... :D

Well there are probably four very good reasons
1) Argentina rugby is still an Old Boy's Club that hasn't changed in decades
2) Their professional players play in Europe and the clubs would have to willingly let them play (and not exert outside pressure on them)
3) The 3N teams are heavily dependent on the broadcasting contract and it would have to make financial sense for Argentina to be let in (i.e. Argentina would basically have to pay for itself and not be of adverse effect to the others)
4) Travel. It's bad enough going from NZ to South Africa. How much worse is it to Argentina?

Personally I would love to see them join in to the 3N and I would love for the S14 to be expanded to include two Argentinian teams (and split the competition into two pools with 1/8s played). But it would have to make sense for all of SANZAR as it only takes one country to veto it for them not to be included.

4) Travel. It's bad enough going from NZ to South Africa. How much worse is it to Argentina?
It's closer I think, but yeah it would mean a lot more travel for the players.

Imagine a quad-nations, two games against each team, followed by a grand final between the two best. I would love that, and it might get us used to playing the important games.

Back to the World Cup, I think SA will take it, but I actually want England to win. I hate their media as much as anyone, but the actual players have shown such grit and balls to get this far when absolutely nobody rated them that I'll be happy to see them take it out. It'd also ensure heaps of English fans coming over here for the next WC, and they are a lot of fun.

:lol France

To be fair the English media haven't been hyping the Rugby WC much till we beat Australia, but for the love of god if we Win the WC and Luis Hamilton wins the F1 grand prix this weekend, I'm going to suffocate in british media smugness. :/

Man! I didn't know rugby was so popular. 5 minutes before the match and this thread has gone mental.

I really don't think we have any hope, but....ENGLAND!

I especially want us to win as I hate the South African accent. There, maybe that'll spark the thread.

This should be a good game, its certainly going to be a lot closer than the SA vs england game earlier in the competition.

Oh God, I know! I'm gonna cringe if I have to see that grinning chimp (ITV presenter Jim Rosenthal) with a big smirk on his face once more in this RWC. It'll be even worse considering I'm Welsh - we won't hear the end of it...

C'MON SOUTH AFRICA!

Might as well rip your balls being Welsh it'd be less painful.

C'MON KIMI RAIKONEN & FERNANDO ALONSO.

Thats a big decision. From the replays it looked like the try should have counted. Its really difficult to tell though. If you see the replay from behind the players, it looks like Cueto just lifted his left foot before it got to the touchline.

I don't know all the rules, but my understanding is if any part of you touches the line in rugby, it's out of touch. The commentators here kept saying he lifted his foot in time, but I thought his toe touched the line before he lifted it.

Its difficult to tell if his foot did or didnt touch the touchline. To me it looked like he just lifted his toe before it reached the touchline,

I can't see exactly, but I think his knee touched the line before the ball went down. That's why the TMO couldn't award the try.

goddamn it. It's on channel 445 here which apparently is part of some BS sports package I don't have. Is there a live webcast anywhere?

What an asshole, the ball was always going to dead and he pushes him.

edit -

Still too close to call. SA needs another try to put this out of reach.

I have a site with links to loads of webcasts, though I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post it here due to licensing laws and all that.
