Official Sony E3 2005 press conference thread

This is GAF. We'll see a 180 turnaround once people get the controller in their hands.

Nah, I dislike the dual shock so I can say that this controller sucks, even if the handles aren't as uncomfortable as they appear. :P No triggers and the left analog stick is still in the wrong place...the Xbox 360 controller seems far superior, at least for me.

The "big surprise" at the end of the show is the announcement that the next installment of Grand Theft Auto is exclusive to PlayStation 3. Expect PS3 in Spring of 2006.

As expected. Lame.

Next presser!

Ah shit. GTA must have now. Spring 2006, hmm, Xbox's launch window will be small.

Hope that's a painting and not real time. The landscape doesn't look very detailed.

The landscape looks like fractals. Randomly generated?

Still reporting live from the Sony pre-E3 conference, we can confirm that Metal Gear Solid 4 has been officially announced for the PlayStation 3. SCEA president Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai delivered the good news today, just moments after Sony confirmed and revealed the PlayStation 3 console, scheduled to debut in spring of 2006.

While we've known for a while now that MGS4 was in development, this is the first official confirmation that the game is for the PS3.

Very few details are known yet, apart from Hideo Kojima taking a slightly more-distant role in development, and that the game uses a theme of "No Place to Hide!" Given the series' stealthy focus, this could indicate a fundamental change in direction for the franchise, or at the very least, some tasty gameplay enhancements.

We'll be back with more as soon as we have it.

At the Sony E3 2005 press conference Square-Enix just showed a Final Fantasy VII trailer running on PS3.

The demo depicted the introduction sequence to the original Final Fantasy VII, but was titled "Technical Demo for PS3." This means that it may or may not turn into an actual game. The PS3 can finally deliver Final Fantasy the way it was meant to be delivered -- just like the CG cutscenes.

The demonstration was a complete recreation of the beginning to Final Fantasy VII using some "awesome, awesome" graphics. It's an exact duplicate of the original game. It could even be a full recreation.

UPDATE: There will not be a Final Fantasy VII remake for PS3. Repeat, there will not be a remake. But, there will be a new Final Fantasy game. We'll have info on that as it happens.

Sony has mentioned in the past that its new handheld and its upcoming console would get along together, but it wasn't until the big unveiling of the PS3 that concrete details have been available on how this will come together.

In its PS3 unveiling, SCE announced that the PlayStation 3 would have support for USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and online networking. Those first two are the biggest concerns for PSP owners, as Sony officially confirmed that the Wi-Fi configuration of the PS3 would allow the PSP to wirelessly connect with the home console. No wires, no connectors, no muss, no fuss. Of course, the PSP also has outlets for the USB 2.0, which might allow for corded connections as well as wireless, if necessary.

PSP won't just be used for wireless file transfers -- according to the official specs for the system, the PSP can be used as a controller for the console. Whether PSP will be used as a PS3 controller much is up to developers -- the GBA and GameCube got along great together, and the PSP obviously has a lot more capable hardware to do interesting things than that duo. Whether PS3 developers enjoy that gimmick of a system with a full-color screen or else decide to stick to the more complicated PS3 controller configuration is a matter we will find out in time.

You'll get no arguments from me comparing the PS3 controller to the 360 since I prefer the layout of the 360 as well.

I think people are going overboard on the controller issue right now. That is all. :)

Did the Sony press conference have video of Killzone, MGS4, etc?? I'm wondering if I should bother watching it if I get the chance

Man, its fucking Warhawk. You ever play the original? You fight enemies OUT THE ASS. Tons of enemies > environments.

Plus Incog probably doesn't even have 100% final dev kits, plus a whole year to release, I agree with their choice to make sure the sheer quantity of enemies be the focus of their early efforts.

I don't like that controller. I wanted the analog sticks like the MS S and 360 controllers with R1/L1 buttons and analog triggers to boot. Racing games and FPS still will feel more natural on the MS console. SONY really needed to address these issues and I'm disappointed they didn't.

Overall the ps3 looks fantastic minus the controller, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna get excited for nothing but sequels...where is the original content??

After all of this, it doesnt look like much will change next gen. Regardless of what Nintendo does. Seriously, what CAN they do?

Yup. Launching with GTA? Everyone has been owned, big time. The war is already over people, nothing to see here. BUT WTF is up with that controller...it does look comfortable though. I'll wait for impressions *sigh*

Very strong showing from Sony I think. Last year was rubbish, but they've really gone to town here. By announcing massive titles like MGS4, GT5 and GTA they've already started a big fat hype machine rolling. The console looks cool, a spring launch is earlier than I expected.

Don't see the big hullabaloo about the controller either. Looks fine.

I'm really excited to see what Nintendo have cooking now.

What an exciting thread.

The specs look good (I never believed 4GHz cell - 3.2 is pretty impressive), the console itself looks good (best looking console since Dreamcast IMHO). It's got Blu-ray but wont be slow-loading. The controllers are wireless (do they rumble?). It has plenty of memory. Awesome stuff.

On the down-side, the controller looks like it was designed by a secret agent from MS sent to sabotage the PS3. Maybe it's a rush-job because they were going to stick with the dual-shock and then they got hit with that law-suit? The hard drive is not included so it will probably be ignored and undersupported, not like 360's standard HD. I'll have to buy a memory stick or card or hard drive with the machine since it has no way of storing data otherwise. The graphics don't actually look any better than 360's so far.

But on the whole, not bad! Backwards compatibility makes the machine a must-buy for me, since I never got a PS2 and can now pick up a heap of awesome games super cheap.

Jeez can we limit the unfunny photoshops, and random images, the board is loading slow enough as is. Ok that IGN one was pretty funny though :)

Anyone get those screens Meier posted (or tried to)? Need rehosting if anyone can.

EDIT: Oh I can see some of them now.

BTW what months do they mean by "Spring" (here it means September-November)? And was that just to launch in Japan? What about everywhere else?

OMG...

So peculiar plp made fun about PDZ and Wall Guy.. and now Ps3 boome-pad is the center of all attention.. how could it be Sony made such the same mistake Ms made with Xbox pad last gen??

Pls Nintendo.. do some real revolution tomorrow :D

uh i think that was a given anyway, I really don't think MS counted on anything less.

Am I the only one that noticed this?

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/16/news_6124681.html

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer," which is based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. The RSX also has 512MB of graphics render memory and is capable of 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. It also has more than 300 million transistors, larger than any processor commercially available today. It will be manufactured using the 90nm process, with eight layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which would cost roughly $1,000 total if purchased today.

In addition to this earlier:

The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2GHz, giving the whole system 2.18 teraflops of overall performance. It will sport 256MB XDR main RAM at 3.2GHz, and it will have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700MHz.

Unless my math is mistaken, that's 1GB of RAM. Unfortunately I don't see it in the press release earlier in the thread. Did Gamesport mess up?

P.S. That controller is ass. I'll use the DS2, thanks.
