Official Sony E3 2005 press conference thread

Yeah I don't know how to compare 360 and PS3 when all Sony does is show renders.

Exactly what they did when revealing PS2 against Dreamcast.

Fuck yes to 1080p games and HDMI cable right on the back of the console. I'm worried that if MS releases a HDMI cable at all, they'll want a ton of money for it (Radio Shack sells HDMI cables for $100, when you can get good quality cables for $30 online).

The general design is pretty ugly (fuck the Spiderman font for the PS3 logo), and the controller looks insane, but I'm crossing my fingers it'll be good.

All real time.

Don't be fooled, the PS3 was sick. It was all real-time. They even did this crazy rubber duck demo. Yikes. It works off a new EyeToy. They had a tub with a lot of water and a rubber ducky in it. Then the EyeToy inventor came out holding a green cup and a blue cup. Wherever he moved the cups, two digital glasses on the screen would move around the gameworld. So he has two real glasses and they are translated into two digital cups that he could dip into the bath tub (which was governed by real physics) and then realistically pour water into each of the cups. The bathtub water even waved realistically. It helped that everything being shown was running in 720p."

I'm not going to defend the PS3 controller until we see some more photos, but I will say it looks strikingly like the Apex PS1 controller, which tried to sell itself off of absolutely huge (and some say comfortable) shoulder grips.

PS3 Demo Showcase

I imagine this is just pulled from the press conference video, but it's easier for people this way if they don't want to watch the entire thing.

Holy crap!

Killzone 2 footage is.. just... oh my.

Colour me impressed.

I just watched this. BEAUTIFUL. I hope it really can be done in real time and we'll see the same quality for first-gen PS3 games. :D

I think I'll skip the conference though, everything is already out and it's 2 hours. Thanks for those that posted the link though!

Same with microsoft too. I'll see whatever surprise they have posted here instead of watching the whole thing.

that killzone video was simply awesome, realtime or not

Agreed, My jaws on the floor.

I was waiting for the CGI to Gameplay transition and it just didn't happen, at ALL.

It has to be a pre-rendered "sim" of gameplay, if thats all realtime then oh my, oh my oh my oh my.

Sony Press Conference.. ok.. real nice.. interesting.. ps3 unbeatable.. ok..

.. but.. oh God.. what a horrible/ugly Powerpoint presentation.. looks like done by primary school students!!!

Dylan Cuthbert and the rubber duckies strike again!!!!

AMAZING! THanks for that, man!

I think all of those look possible sometime or other in the future, with the exception of the F1 demo, which I found very hard to believe.

DMC4, Killzone(OMG at the potential experience) and GT5 look very possible now, but that Tekken demo? I dunno...three, four years later?

and GTA!! Have Rockstar gone artistic?(with the music and all) very hyped about where they might be taking the game...

Honestly, I don't know what Nintendo's going to have to do to contend with this. I mean, we were all pretty confident that Sony was going to pull out all the stops, but Nintendo? Nobody has a clue what they've got up their sleeves.... could be awesome, but it could also be horrible.

Holy Shit @ that video, I thought that F1 footage was real life, and damn on Killzone.

i find the likelyhood that demo reel was realtime to be extremely low

Hey keep up the good fight :lol

this is very useless unless you are using very small monitors because the cost of getting HD big screens is still much more then most gamers would spend. DUAL HDMI is worthless but the idea rocks.

The tekken shots are realtime? The DMC shot is realtime? Someone else here said the killzone shots were renders.

That's the stuff I'm talking about. Showing a face and some lighting tricks when there is no complex background graphic or AI to worry about doesn't really tell me much about how a game will work. Same with the rubber ducky thing - add game code and environments and all the things that make a game a game and you probably can't do what is done in those demos to the level of detail that they acheive.

The only way to really understand the console's power is to show it running some actual games. Did they do that?

Edit: haven't watched the vid yet - using a mac with firefox so nothing like that works.

Also from Anandtech :

One thing we noticed in most of the PS3 demos was that there was still varying amounts of aliasing in the demos; some demos were better than others, but none were perfect. At the same time, a lot can change between now and the PS3's release.

IGN says everything is realtime.

That Killzone demo rocked me, the sense of scale and people dropping like flies... wow just wow... Its how I would imagine a next gen Halo to be like. Hopefully MS will show off some stunning demos tonight aswell, as well as Nintendo tomorrow. Next Gen looks fucking unreal!

If the PS3 is launching less than 6 months after 360, there's no excuse for them not to have something playable on the floor.

Or at least videos of actual gameplay footage (ala Killzone2). Seeing Jin from Tekken sweating and flexing with nothing but a black background does NOTHING for me and it's something the 360 could pull off easily.

Considering people have only had kits for about 2 months, the chances of anyone actually having anything realtime worth showing is close to nil.

If you were sony, do you:
A) Show wallguy-ps3 edition because your kit and games arent far enough along yet.
B) Show render targets and not sell your machine short.

Obvious answer is A.

Also, I know the guy who makes the rubber ducky demos (since ps2) and it certainly isnt anywhere near to using the power of the machine. (EDIT: This is speculation based on the fact Q Games has alot on their plate, and I cant imagine Dylan spending a huge amount of time on the demo)

Controller looks unique and it's about time to see them do something different. I think it will be fine.

Agreed.

It looks like crap but I think it'll be comfortable. Just look at how the gamecube controller looks in pics, it certainly does not feel that way .

Hey guys,i have just seen the real-time FFVII tech demo..
Now i believe EVERY other demos shown on the conference...
Damn i will just get the three consoles but the PS3..Oh my god..I'm speechless..Just see the Squenix tech demo..just see it and come back...Realtime quasi movie-like CG is here and Square just owned us all.

Does any site have downloadable videos of the PS3 demos? All I know of are Gamespot's streaming ones.

Anyway, after seeing those first few screenshots of DMC, Killzone, and Warhawk, I was slightly underwhelmed. But after watching the demo reel on Gamespot: Holy shit. Now THAT is next-gen. Way to go, Sony. And not only did the PS3 games look better than 360's, they were all running at smooth framerates (hint, hint, MS).

Anandtech's article has a shot of the front panel - you can see the four USB ports lined up like controller ports, and the smooth top piece slides back to reveal the memory card slots (hopefully one is PS1/2 compatible?)

GT5 20+ cars on track :rock
Killzone :jawdrop
T5 :wow
FFVII :wow :jawdrop
F1 might actually be fun again next gen :rock

WELCOME NEXT GENERATION GAMING>

i started watching those demo's and then cut it off.... i want to watch a higher res downloadable version of this shit... if i can't watch it live i might as well see it high quality.

what i saw was impressive... if the xbox stuff is really on unfinished hardware, MS should have done the same thing and shown target stuff for what it will all look like. it seems much more impressive than the mtv stuff.

Killzone footage has to be CG...Games just don't move like that. And am I the only person who didn't see MGS4 in there? Was it even there? The UT2K7 demo was nice though.

Wow the system looks really good, and those demos really seem like next-gen.

Seeing the PS3 makes me happy, but not as happy as knowing that ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT GOT A FULL 3RD SEASON RENEWAL. (yes this is my way of spreading this joyous news since the OT's down. :D)

Same here :D Really opened my eyes as to the possibilities of next-gen.

Just saw the demos. Killzone looked awesome.

After seeing Tekken I doubted it was realtime. But then I remembered the Dreamcast Shenmue Face demos which was like 6 years ago and I thought, yeah in that amount of time I would expect this to be the next level of improvement. I can only hope it's true.

The Tekken demo looked like FFX: TSW.

Fight Night is by EA, so you can attibute the stuttering to many possibilities...

1. EA is not as close with Sony (mainy geographically) so they may have not had their dev kits for as much time as Namco (Tekken) and Square (FFVII)

2. EAs programmers are not as good

I just hope they make them available to the consumer later on(I've always wanted demos for my consoles)... suffice it to say I'm blown away. Me = very very happy :D

I just realised no one mentioned the Gundam demo....my self included.

Giant mechs tearing down cities!!! Whoo hoo!! AWESOME!

Namdai, you'd better deliver!!
