Official Suikoden IV thread!

So it's coming out in a couple days. So I thought I should make an official thread along with the questions I have.

So three questions...

1) Does the game do any save importing at all? Cause I'm playing Suikoden 3 now and need to know if I need to master it like I did S1 and S2 (10xDouble-Beat runes!)

2) Is there still a skill-based system like S3 had. I know they got rid of the buddy system (thank god!), but I actually quite liked the skill system of S3.

3) Did they get rid of that "magic can hit your own allies" bs. Cause that was probabaly the thing I hated the most out of the changes from S2 to S3 (I still loved S3 though).

Oh, if anyone has any questions about anything related to Suikoden 1 to 3, I'm the person to ask. I know Suikoden so well I can play back the entire first game in my head. So ask away if you have any questions.

I know Suikoden is an RPG, but do you need the previous 3 to get into this? Also, what systems were the old ones for?
And one more question, what kind of RPG is this? Final Fantasy type? or something more like KOTOR?

So... according to IGN, the music is good, the voice acting is good, the graphics are decent and it has loads of mini-games... it's just short, not very pretty and not very original.

I think I can live with that. However, he failed to address the problems reported earlier (long loading times in cut scenes, problematic auto-sailing).

Oh well, I'll still have the game in a few days and even if it sucks, it's a new Suikoden to play.

Suikos 1 and 2 came out for the PSOne, and Suiko 3 was also a PS2 game. Your save file from 1 could be used in 2, and 2 could be used in 3. Suiko 4, unless I'm mistaken, is the first that won't take a prior save file.

I'm expecting my game and art book to arrive any day. Perhaps even before I get back home from vacation overseas...

No. But you do need the previous 3 anyway. 1 and 2 are for PSX (and may be tricky to get hold of), 3 is for PS2.

I can't wait. I'm so biased, and engrossed in the Suiko universe that this game is gonna have to suck really bad for me not to enjoy it.

It's HD loader compatible, so loading doesn't bother me. I always found the Suikoden games charming, so even with flaws, I'm sure I'll find something to enjoy about Suikoden IV.

I'm the same way. I loved Suikoden III despite it's flaws, and in some ways, respect it even more for what it did...
Luc being the actual "hero" and all

That's respectable?

Suikoden 3 was the very definition of an utterly mediocre RPG. Well, okay, the Thomas stuff was oddly cute, and Lulu's death was the best LOL I've had in ages, but as far as gameplay goes it was pretty much pure, pointless tedium.

Says the man being molested by World of Warcraft. :lol

I agree on the gameplay aspect. Infact, here are all my complaints...

- The buddy system sucked, and the battle system was completly slowed down from the previous games. (one of the big appeals of previous Suikoden games)
- The 3d models were decent at best, and the character animation was horrible.
- The magic system was annoying as hell, well at least in the case of "area magic" (since you need Jeane + A in a magic to get off one of those high level Fire spells before the monsters moving).
- The music was absolutely horrid save the greatest opening song ever, two of the field songs, one song near the end and the Alma Kinen song.
- The Flame Champion
Hugo
rarely grew as a character, he infact stayed very static even after the end. (well minor growth, but not much).
- I absolutely HATED the fact it took so long to get teleport/mirror.
- The castle didn't upgrade much, would have liked more upgrading to it like the previous games.
- Too much running around in the Thomas chapters.

With all that against it, I still loved Suikoden III. It still had that Suikoden goodness. Plus what game has you, the player, playing multiple characters who are unknowingly watching the actual hero's story from different perspectives. The whole
Luc being the hero
thing definitely pulls it up.

Suikoden 3 was flawed but I still loved it since its....suikoden.

But S4...the demo was awful...and all these reviews....not looking good ;_;

You know, its been well over a year since I played it, but I didn't get that at all out of the story, and I got all 108 Stars, his quest, and whatnot. I might as well replay it anyway since I played 3 the first time before 1 and 2 anyway.

WoW *is* tedious at times. But it also has random drops, great art direction, a massive non-linear world, and running commentary by MAF and Tre. You can't say the same for Suikoden 3.

I can also say Suikoden III never let me fall off the world and get stuck on the side, or get smacked by a boat into the ocean, but fuck, who am I kidding, I love them both!

I don't love them both.

Suikoden trounces any MMORPG (including the one I'm currently addicted to) for addictive-ness.

My copy's on the way, but it takes the best part of a week for games to arrive from Canadia. :(

The same goes for me.
I hope my PS2 arrives at the weekend so I can play Growlanser Gen. until Suiko IV arrives.

ROFL please leave your fisher price mmorpgs out this! he

Didn't the original creator leave midway through the development of Suikoden III? That would explain everything (why Suikoden II > Suikoden III > Suikoden IV).

Is it a fact that S3 > S4? I heard the creator of the original Suikoden came back and did part 4. Most of the reviews I read said it was as good or better than S3, but it didnt really stand up to todays standard for RPGs.

IGN and EGM certainly think so (that S3 was a better game than S4). And I don't think the creator came back, because someone was posting pics of a game from another developer headed by the creator of Suikoden after S4 was released in Japan. IIRC, Suikoden IV was headed by the same lady that was in charge of Shaodw of Destiny (which I really enjoyed).

I still don't get how Suikoden II is considered better than III. Or the original even. I didn't care for it at all.

Bumping up for release date. Anyone get their copy yet?

I will at 2 o'clock, woo. But I have to finish Shadow Hearts II (still on disc I, but I just got Anastasia, I've got a feeling the disc ends soon) and my Suikoden III replay before I even touch this.

And I don't get how you don't get the majesty of Suikoden II. Yeah, it starts off rather slow, but 20% through it picks-up and becomes one of the best PS1 RPGs. Beautiful music, touching scenes, engaging gameplay, etc. I don't see how anyone can prefer S1 or S3 over it.

I would put it like this:

Suikoden II >>>> Suikoden III >> Suikoden

Really? The whole game felt really sloppy, the story was really, really bad. Touching? Not at all to me. As annoying as fuck Lulu was, his death was still much more emotional than than most of Suikoden II. It's plot seem really predictable, and more than a bit asinine at times.
I really agreed with Riou's sister when she was saying "Why are we doing this?"
I understood Tir's struggle, and I saw reason in what Chris, Hugo and Geddoe were doing, but Riou and Jowy's whole bit just did nothing for me.
And as far as music, I can't recall a single tune from the whole damn series other than Suikoden III's opener. Konami's series usually have great music, but Suikoden really drops that ball.

Suikoden 2 was amazing, probably my second favourite game ever.

That said, I got Suikoden 4 today. I've been playing for
5 hours
and just got the castle with a fairly direct request to go collect people again.

Gameplay-wise, it feels pretty much like Suikoden 1 with a simple battle system, coupled with some of the later additions like trading, lotteries, LOTS of mini-games, optional "bad" endings and so on. I also got to choose two companions early on (from a choice of four) and I've been stuck with them ever since, so choose wisely.

The graphics are a step up from Suiko 3 and really do justice to the character designs. Most characters so far seem interesting and have good dialogue and even decent voices (even the cat-kobold!).

I didn't find the ship travel too annoying, except that sometimes the wind doesn't blow your way. Don't bother with auto-pilot, just check the map, set your course and speed and have a snack while it goes, just taking care of the battles.

Load times are fairly long and often appear in the middle of scenes, but it's not as extreme as someone said. Annoying, but not game-breaking.

Depending on how the remaining 75 or so characters turn out, this might be at least as good as Suikoden 1, but I doubt it will reach the other two.
