Ok credit goes out to everyone who was in the Spring 05 thread, as well as bloke who posted this list in there. I figured since the Summer season has OFFICIALLY started with a BANG, it's time for a new thread.

Kamichu has aired and OH MY GOD is it awesome (apparently). I'm getting the raw as we speak but I expect to be really impressed. The 2ch word right now is that ep1 was a Ghibli anime movie quality episode. The 2nd unit key frame animators on ep1 are ALL animation directors from Ghibli and Production IG having worked on Howl's, Mononoke, Spirited Away, Spriggan, etc.

Spring dissapointed with the slow pace of the subs :(

Eureka 7 - Honey and Clover - Speed Grapher will still be shown during summer right?

Yup.

Eureka 7 = 50eps
Honey and Clover = 26eps
Speed Grapher = 24eps

I'm still watching all three, so they'll continue into the Summer and we can still talk about them here. This is largely to introduce the conversations of the new anime that will also be starting so people are aware of what's popping up. :D

Stuff I'm interested in;

06/28 Kamichu!
Haven't read manga but heard good stuff about it and main character is super-moe, will watch it out natch.

07/02 D.C.S.S. Da Capo Second Season
First D.C. was bit of Kanon ripoff (both as game and anime) but it was pretty good for bishoujo anime and... I liked it, so will be watching this too.

07/02 Hiyoko Brand (Okusama Wa Joshi Kousei)
Faaanserviceee...will watch, unless it turns into Ichigo 100% anime debacle. It seems studio behind Elfen Lied is producing it.

07/03 Okusama Wa Mahou Shoujo
Mahou Shoujo with/for twentysomethings...we'll see.

07/03 Pani Poni Dash!
Manga seems like Sensei No Ojikan ripoff, but since Shinbo Akiyuki is directing it (if I'm not wrong), it'll be awesome, double check.

07/04 GUNxSWORD
Samurai SF western? We haven't had that in a while...guy directing it is bit overrated if you ask me but...checking anyway.

07/04 Akahori Gedou
Moe, double loli kikku, will be checking. Though I have no idea what is this really about :P

07/08 PetoPeto-san
More moe, and animation from trailer seem nice, has to be truly boring to prevent me from watching.

07/14 Ichigo Mashimaro
Loli overload, I thought manga was uber-cute though boring, but little prologue for anime was great, and Niea Under 7 director is doing it so bring it on.

Overall like I stated in other topic, summer season pretty much ruled by fanservice/harem/bishoujo/moe/loli stuff, liked it or not.

Oooh, back when I was into reading scanlations, Hiyoko Brand was a definite guilty pleasure. Jesus can that guy draw. :o

Ok I just watched Kamichu! Ep1..........

That was fucking unbelievable. While it should be expected from the director Masunari's previous efforts (Kokoro Library, Risky Safety, ROD TV) that it would have a slice of life element in the show, what was actually featured I really couldn't believe.

The episode started off slow and confusing because they introduce a few characters and just show interactions and standard stuff, the kind of stuff they killed my interest in Kokoro Library. I'm not a HUGE slice of life fan, although I really like Azumanga and Honey and Clover. What struck me as impressive was the highly detailed character animation and excellent backgrounds. Every detail was painstakingly drawn from shadows on the character's clothing, to animated hair, to facial expressions and lip flaps that were unique and realistic. It was really almost movie-quality and even better than Futakoi Alternative.

Then after the halfway point the show just blew me away. I won't spoil because obviously they've been keeping what the series is "really about" a secret at least visually. But if you're a fan of Ghibli's movie intepretations of fantasy in a realistic world, you won't be remotely disappointed. The show is very impressive and the writing, animation and music come together just perfectly because the director so effortlessly pulls it off. The slow pace of the first half was obviously orchestrated because he had complete confidence in hooking the audience with the latter half. A decision that I really applaud.

Another note should be that the first episode was 23mins long with no opening or ending animations, instead the opening credits faded in and out with the opening song playing in the background while the episode just continued on normally, and the ending credits scrolled horizontally at the bottom of the screen towards the end of the episode with no actual interruption to the animation itself. The series is obviously VERY high budget but the main difference comes in how it actually strived to be different from everything else and succeeded. The DVD release schedule says 8 volumes total and 2 eps per disc, so I guess this TV series is going to be 16 episodes. An unsual format, but with Kamichu, nothing is normal. :D

hrm still occupied with my nice spring lineup:

Basilisk, Eureka 7, Futakoi Alternative, Gundam Seed Destiny, Honey & Clover, He is my Master, Sousei no Aquarion, Tsubasa Chronicle

kinda meh.. ones I'm still following
Naruto, Ichigo 100%

talk about lots of plate spinning.

Watched Kamichu. Unlike Duckroll I didn't think it was "fucking unbelievable", but it was pretty nice. Reminded me a lot of the directors other shows: nice looking, good pacing, good entertainment, but a little on the fluff side. Definitely a show to watch out for, but don't necessarily expect to be blown away by ep1; it's no Eureka 7 ep1 :P

I'll second the recommendation of Paranoia Agent. It's great stuff.

I started watching Elfen Lied and Gilgamesh recently and they're both pretty cool so far. Gilgamesh has great gritty atmosphere. Elfen Lied goes a bit overboard on the fan service sometimes, but it's genuinely affecting and disturbing, and looks great.

Looking forward to Ganketsuou (sp?): The Count of Monte Cristo later this summer.

...

Man, I'm not feeling any of those shows. I'll download a bunch of first episodes and see if they grab me, but...yeah.

FnordChan

Hmm.. Might have to watch Kamichu. And I'll probably go ahead and watch the second season of Da Capo. I did watch the first season afterall.

Ok, guys. What would I like besides Kamichu? (I'm gonna keep an eye out for that based on Duck's impressions)

Only animes I will be watching this summer...Samurai Champloo, and Cowboy Bebop reruns.

Way to close yourself off from alot of good anime.

What is the holdup on Eureka 7 and Emma? It almost hurts to watch the "new" eps cos I know I won't see what happens next for like 3 weeks >_<

Himuro said:
Isn't Emma the show that's full of yaoi?

No, that's Loveless >_<

PS: Eyeshield 21 is a pretty good sports anime I just found. Not as good as Major but it's pretty funny :D

I really like Eyeshield 21 but I get tired of how scared this kid gets, I hope he just plays without fear soon. ep 13 seems like he is trying to deal with it.

I will not watch Major now maybe on DVDs later.

Himuro said:
Eyeshield 21 didn't look like sports to me lol

I remember that someone had a photoshopped pic of one of the main characters and it looked like he had a vacuum hand.

I just watched the first ep and it was pretty good.

I will not watch Major now maybe on DVDs later.

Watch one ep and you won't stop till you catch up. It's that good and addictive. Best sports/drama/comedy anime I've ever seen :D

Another random show I'm enjoying is Gakuen Alice. Don't ask me why :p

you got me very tempted to look for major ep 1.

I will try to dl a few eps overnight and watch over the weekend since nothing is coming right
now.

edit: Major ep 1-10 is missing from the main team... too bad

I just checked and 1-10 are there but the groups merged after a few eps so the recent eps are a combo effort, I guess. Watch a few eps and you'll be waiting for 22 like me in a few days :lol

Started watching the new Glass Mask TV series.. (Original anime was in 1984 or so I believe while the manga had been running since 1974 with like 45? or so volumes out..) It's pretty good so far. :) They seemed to have "toned" a few things down with the dramaticness but overall, I like it so far. =o Weird to see some of the characters looking so different though.

New Glass Mask is pretty good, definitely on my tracked anime list.

Still haven't seen Major.. probably because I read H2 and that does it for me with baseball.

Kamichu looks and sounds very promising.

So very true.

Also, Dokuro-chan ep 3+4 is out. :D

Dokuro-chan_dai-02-wa.jpg

Pi Piru Piru Pipiru Pi, If you ever wondered what's the connection between Gregor Samsa and 'morning wood', well new Dokuro-chan eps will let you know. :lol
Out of new shows, PaniPoni Dash was awesome as expected, even though I was ?!? most of the time, hope it will get fansubbed soon. And seems like most of Tsukuyomi crew is back on PPD aswell, including Shinbo and Chiwa Saito (Hazuki's seiyuu).
Kamichu! was good too, some spectacular animation (not in flashy sense of the word) for a tv anime I agree. And I don't think it's inferior ot superior to Windy Tales, I got different vibes from those two shows anyway.

Ok I just watched Gun x Sword.

Oh man.

Goro Taniguchi is BACK!

Gun x Sword ep 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> sCRYed ep1

If he keeps this up, Bebpo's going to get multiple orgasms every week. :lol

Nice. Gun x Sword is the most promising for me just because of Goro.

I watched Kamichu! with my girlfriend, she loved it to death and I thought it was insanely cool, especially the last half. I'd recommend everyone to at least watch the first ep and see how you like it.

I thought I would summarize Gun x Sword for those not following what it is...

It's basically Trigun x sCRYed with 100% Taniguchi style. The show is set in a far off time and space that's neither past nor present and far off from Earth. Basically Trigun-ish sci-fi western except with a bunch of unique Taniguchi-ism twists which I won't spoil because half the fun of ep1 was going O_O!!!! :lol

When Taniguchi said that Gun x Sword was supposed to be "simple and stylish" I guess what he really meant was "I'm not going to tell you jack shit about the show so stfu and plz tune in yourself" because I'll be damned if the story doesn't end up being fucking epic and dramatic. :D

Well, at least that's a start. Mostly cause Scryed sucks.

As the self-proclaimed biggest Taniguchi Goro fan in the west, I thought I'd give my take on ep1.

For a start there are three big differences between this and his previous three works (Ryvius, s.CRY.ed, Planetes):

--One is the animation style. This is his first non-Sunrise production and the difference is incredibly apparent. The budget is much lower and the art is not as good. Ryvius and s.CRY.ed had really refreshing original character designs by the guy who went on to become repetitive and boring while doing SEED/SEED-D, and then Planetes had an even better character designer that made everyone look very human, realistic, and believable. The character designs in Gun x Sword for the most part (meaning beyond the main 2-3 people) look almost like standard AIC stuff; the bad guys look slightly better than the random bad guys in Trigun but not by that much. Overall the animation is still fine, but it's a step down from when he was at Sunrise.

--Two is the music. The composer for Gun x Sword is the same guy who s.CRY.ed and Planetes. Also the ending song is sung by the same guy who did the EDs for those two anime. In Goro's previous three works music has played a huge part of the overall production. In fact, the reason I fell in love with Goro's style is that he was the first anime director I'd seen who knew how to synch music to the animation in order to make the scene/show much more vibrant and alive. Straight from the opening 5 mins in Ryvius, the hip-hop beats mixed with the fast hopping around cutting mixed with the voice narration grabbed me straight from the start. The music in s.CRY.ed was almost like a waltz and the characters danced around in ep1 to it, and as anyone whose watched the entire show knows by the end the music makes for the most powerful scenes. Planetes used a very strong array of music to keep the show full of energy. The fast circus like music would play as the characters would jumble around running lines off each other. Music has always been at the core of a Taniguchi Goro show...

...Until now. While the music is fine and good. It's used more like in a western film where during most of the scenes there is no music at all. Or if there is music, it's just quiet in the background. During action bits it plays up, but otherwise the music in the show is designed around what is happening in the show rather than the show being edited around the music. Overall it's fine, but the lack of strong music carrying the animation does make it feel a bit less Goro-ish.

--Finally...the characters. Like Bones's best works; Goro Taniguchi shows have been known for having huge casts of well-developed and interesting characters. Ryvius's cast is sprawling and development is always happening, even in the background with smaller characters as the main characters have their spotlight. s.CRY.ed also had a very large cast of really great characters split amongst two sides. The main two characters were excellent at playing off each other and together they carried the entire show. Planetes is the pinnacle of Goro's character work as the cast is even bigger than his previous works and each and every character is believable, likeable, and very interesting. Watching these characters grow, change, and play off each other was one of the greatest joys of that show. So in short, a Goro piece is a character piece. But again...not here :\ The main guy in Gun x Sword is interesting in a Vash, Alucard kind of way; but he's not the same type of really interesting original character that Koji, Kazuma, and Hachimaki were. The secondary character is even worse as she comes off as just a stock anime girl. And the main problem is that from ep1...that's it. The sub-characters have no real personality and are just typical anime people made for the 1ep, and the villian had about as much depth as an early enemy from Trigun. So unlike his previous shows which from ep1 had casts of 5-10 interesting characters introduced to the audience; Gun x Sword has 2 and they're not even as interesting as previous ones. That being said the characters are still good, they just are closer to the characters of an action anime like Trigun, than a Goro Taniguchi anime.

So what does this all add up to? Well as a long time fan of Goro Taniguchi...it's a bit of a disappointment and was less enjoyable than the ep1s of his previous works. This isn't at all because it was a bad show; it was still very good. But rather this is because the show is missing a lot of what makes up Goro Taniguchi and his style. Personally I think he did this on purpose; like the quote Duckroll gave I think he's not trying to make something like his previous works. Basically not a character piece; but rather a Japanese take on the old western genre with a little twist. Also I won't give away the twist; but the one twist in ep1 is really what saves my respect for Goro. If there's one thing that I would never want to see him do, it would be to do the same thing twice. He's done a psychological horror space drama; a shounen extreme show, and a love story/human drama in space. At first glance with the s.CRY.ed style music and the solo action hero it would almost seem like Goro is cashing and copying s.CRY.ed by doing another shounen action show. Well...maybe it still is a shounen action show but as you'll see in ep1 it's a sub-genre of action that Goro personally has never really done though he has touched on it in past works. So despite my slight disappointment in ep1, I'm very interested to see Goro's take on this genre and see what he can do with it. I'm hoping Goro hasn't lost his edge, and he has the next few eps to show it.

I did some name checking and it seems like most of the Gun x Sword art and animation people are from Godanner. And the writer is the guy who wrote RoD manga/OAV/TV/Brigadoon/Now&Then Here&There. The character designer did Betterman and Gaogaigar designs though you can't really tell from appearance.

Definitely a very different group of people than he's worked with before, so I guess it explains the different feel to it. I'm not a fan of the writer at all; Brigadoon aside all his shows started off great and dwindled down into a weak end. Hopefully Goro beats the shit out of him and turns him into a good writer.

I watched Kamichu.
It would have been a great show if the main character actually wasn't a god, and was just looney. As it is, it's just going to turn out to be like another magical girl show, and I've long gone past my tolerance on those (I love himechan no ribbon and fancy lala but that's it). If every ep is just going to end up being Yurie causing some disaster with her powers and then figuring out how to fix it later, then it's going to become redundant and annoying.

Going to watch Major 1-12 today I have been busy over the weekend...
So I launched the first ep... what a bad aweful song, okay I'm hating let me give it a chance :D

I'm eager to see Solty Rei , which includes a mammoth all-star anime cast from the creators/artists of Vandread Second Stage, Mai-Hime, Gunsmith Cats, Samurai 7, Last Exile, and Spy Fiction.

Major is really impressive thanks Cloudy man it is really cool I think I'm hooked :)

edit: Okay I got my ass handed to me during Major ep 6 its been a while since an anime did that. damn

Yes please. After you, of all people Bebpo, seemed to be disappointed in ep 1 of Gun X Sword, I hope it turns out for the better.

To me, the first 5-15 episodes define an anime. Evangelion did it. Cowboy Bebop did it. Planetes did it. All of those anime had decent to mullish openings.. but it wasn't until the first half to midway section that they really brought the big guns out.

Just finished Ep 6 of Major. While the dramatic effect of the episode is awesome, they pulled one of those things that I really despise in anime. Ep 6 made me totally not care about the show. Back to Yakatite and OP, I guess.
