Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Yeah this launch is getting crazy.

I've never seen anything like it.

There have been campers starting to line up later in the day before, but not a couple days ahead of time.

Even at my local best buy there were over 30 people waiting outside last night. In the 20 degree cold and windy weather overnight. I dunno, can't see it being worth it to hang outside in blankets and hats for two days to buy a PS3.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I will be across the street from one of the big launch centers on PS3DAY to witness the chaos. Its going to be funny seeing soccer moms get soccer kicked when they try to BS there way to a PS3.

Soccer Mom: Can any of you give your spot up to help me make my son happy on christmas.

Ebayers: STFU and mop the floor bitch!

Regarding the BB drive-by mentioned earlier in this thread, there's already a joke at the TXB forums about the getaway car used...

Bebpo, can you try out the U.S. PS Store with your Japanese PS3? I just heard the US store launched this morning...
He did earlier in the thread. Downloaded a few of the PS3 US Store demos without a problem.

I bet Ken Kutaragi and Kaz are having a good laugh out of those stupid campers.....i wonder what it would be like for the Playstation 4 :)

You know, this is going to be an interesting insight to how well ebay can be saturated by a product that cost minimum from $500 to $600 MSRP. That by itself seems like the likely pricerange for making money on something if it was around $300-400 to begin with.

I've been busy screwing around with the registration stuff and the store also.
Some basic impressions here (still changing some things).

But, the most important part. I scribbled the notes down pretty quickly before work, so it may not be 100% accurate. I'll update it later.

Besides not being able to play PS1/2 US games, is there any reason not to get the import system instead ?

Warranty is probably only good if you send it to Sony Japan.

But that and what you just listed seem to be the only differences. Don't forget it doesn't play US R1 DVDs as well.

You need a regional credit card for the PlayStation store. You can import 50$ PlayStations cards I guess though.

This isn't really an Japan PS3 specific issue though. Since you can use the US store and use a US CC, and US PS3 users will have the same problem trying to buy stuff from the Japanese store.

Fox News has been doing segments on NYC PS3 camping this whole morning... at least 1-2 times per hour. This is too funny.
:lol :lol :lol

My local radio did a bit where they got a guy from the office to go to Wal-Mart and try to swindle an employee for a PS3. The employee wasn't having any of this nonsense.. :lol

Its quite difficult to stand the PS3 up and still have it look good. Without cables IMO it looks way nicer standing up. But once you plug all the cables in, they all stick out the side if you have it standing up so it spoils the aesthetic.

Still haven't turned mine on - got to have dinner first.

Well my local Best Buy has close to 100+ folks that started camping as of 11/15 @ 4pm.

The Target nearby only had 3 folks in line; TRU, Microcenter, CompUSA and Wal-Mart had no one as of 11:30am today.

Did you import? or can you send it straight back?
I got it from a store here in Houston that imported. A friend of mine got his with me and said it works perfectly. ****.

I talked to the store and they said I could return it but that I would have to wait until either some US shipments come in to them or they get some more Japanese consoles.

I WANT MY RESISTANCE!

:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO where did you get it? Well, not like it matters, doesn't work. :|
A little mom and pop store here in Houston.

Oh shit dude. :(

Thats sad.

I guess its the first really problematic PS3... isnt it ?
No one else has reported any problems? I haven't had a chance to read through all the stuff.

My PS3 is just sitting here staring at me. so bootyful. :(

That's why I'm going to have mine lay on it's side. Most people will probably do the same.

Mine's going to be vertical, just because I literally don't have the room for it to be horizontial right now.

I am really confused here, what kind of people will buy these $2000 PS3's off Ebay?

Rich ones with no sense of money?

There are lots of dumb rich people in the U.S. However, I doubt there'll be enough of them to bid that much CONSTANTLY for all the PS3s that are going to be up on eBay in the coming weeks. eBay will be saturated with PS3 scalpers and the price will eventually taper off. Then it'll go back up again a week or so before Christmas.

Will Shane get his PS3? STAY TUNED.

I hope he doesn't. Everybody else in the office got up and waited and he was all, "meeeh, I'm Sony ALly #1, they will probably come to ME."

**** 'em. Enjoy your 360 that you bitch about nonstop!

Wow, listening to talk radio today they are talking about a scene from a wal mart about an hour away from me regarding the PS3. They had 50 people waiting for the system in the morning, and the assistant manager didn't want them lingering around since they only have 10 systems. Instead of doing first come first serve or a raffle, he set up a "game" where he placed 10 lawn chairs down in the distance and the first 10 people who rushed into a chair got a system. In the process one kid hit a pole and had to be rushed away to the hospital. Sounds like he is ok but they are talking abou the ramifications now and if Wal Mart is liable for the damages. WTF was this assistant manager thinking?!

I'm guaranteed a ps3 tonight yes...and I may in fact be able to get two.

If I can get another one I will gladly put it up here for somebody to buy off of me at cost plus shipping.

An economist article on the PS3, nothing new to say really. Doom and Gloom

So a lot is riding on the PlayStation 3 (PS3), the latest incarnation of Sony's industry-leading games console, which was launched with much fanfare in Japan on November 11th. In Akihabara, Tokyo's neon-lit electronics district, stores drafted in extra workers to cope with easily the biggest product launch of the year. At the Yurakucho flagship store of Bic Camera, one of Japan's largest electronics retailers, hundreds of gamers queued through a cold, damp night. Ken Kutaragi, who runs Sony's gaming division, was there to welcome them in the morning.

Sony needs the PS3 to succeed for three reasons: to maintain its lucrative dominance of the games industry; to seed the market for Blu-ray and establish Sony in the emerging market for internet video downloads; and to demonstrate that the turnaround being led by Howard Stringer, who took over as chief executive in 2005, is working and that Sony's gaming, electronics and content divisions really can work together. Despite the enthusiasm of the PS3's early buyers, success in each of these areas is far from assured.

Finally, the PS3 is a litmus test for Sir Howard's turnaround effort, one of the aims of which is to get Sony's various divisions to co-operate more fully. (A spat between its electronics and content units left the field open for Apple's iPod.) The company insists that despite recent problems such as the battery recall, the turnaround is going well behind the scenes. Sony has improved margins in its electronics business and reduced headcount by 10,000 ahead of schedule. It is also on track with factory closures, asset disposals and winnowing its product line-up to focus on “champions” such as Cyber-shot digital cameras, Bravia televisions and, of course, the PS3. Sir Howard even suggested this week that the battery fiasco had helped by making it easier for him to convince doubters within Sony of the need to change.
