Yeah this launch is getting crazy.

I've never seen anything like it.

There have been campers starting to line up later in the day before, but not a couple days ahead of time.

Even at my local best buy there were over 30 people waiting outside last night. In the 20 degree cold and windy weather overnight. I dunno, can't see it being worth it to hang outside in blankets and hats for two days to buy a PS3.

You know, this is going to be an interesting insight to how well ebay can be saturated by a product that cost minimum from $500 to $600 MSRP. That by itself seems like the likely pricerange for making money on something if it was around $300-400 to begin with.

It really seems that for Japanese and US users the systems are completely interchangeable. I can see some people turning to importers once the reality of the stock situation hits in the US.

Warranty is probably only good if you send it to Sony Japan.

But that and what you just listed seem to be the only differences. Don't forget it doesn't play US R1 DVDs as well.

You need a regional credit card for the PlayStation store. You can import 50$ PlayStations cards I guess though.

This isn't really an Japan PS3 specific issue though. Since you can use the US store and use a US CC, and US PS3 users will have the same problem trying to buy stuff from the Japanese store.

Its quite difficult to stand the PS3 up and still have it look good. Without cables IMO it looks way nicer standing up. But once you plug all the cables in, they all stick out the side if you have it standing up so it spoils the aesthetic.

Still haven't turned mine on - got to have dinner first.

Well my local Best Buy has close to 100+ folks that started camping as of 11/15 @ 4pm.

The Target nearby only had 3 folks in line; TRU, Microcenter, CompUSA and Wal-Mart had no one as of 11:30am today.

I got it from a store here in Houston that imported. A friend of mine got his with me and said it works perfectly. ****.

I talked to the store and they said I could return it but that I would have to wait until either some US shipments come in to them or they get some more Japanese consoles.

There are lots of dumb rich people in the U.S. However, I doubt there'll be enough of them to bid that much CONSTANTLY for all the PS3s that are going to be up on eBay in the coming weeks. eBay will be saturated with PS3 scalpers and the price will eventually taper off. Then it'll go back up again a week or so before Christmas.

So a lot is riding on the PlayStation 3 (PS3), the latest incarnation of Sony's industry-leading games console, which was launched with much fanfare in Japan on November 11th. In Akihabara, Tokyo's neon-lit electronics district, stores drafted in extra workers to cope with easily the biggest product launch of the year. At the Yurakucho flagship store of Bic Camera, one of Japan's largest electronics retailers, hundreds of gamers queued through a cold, damp night. Ken Kutaragi, who runs Sony's gaming division, was there to welcome them in the morning.

Sony needs the PS3 to succeed for three reasons: to maintain its lucrative dominance of the games industry; to seed the market for Blu-ray and establish Sony in the emerging market for internet video downloads; and to demonstrate that the turnaround being led by Howard Stringer, who took over as chief executive in 2005, is working and that Sony's gaming, electronics and content divisions really can work together. Despite the enthusiasm of the PS3's early buyers, success in each of these areas is far from assured.

Finally, the PS3 is a litmus test for Sir Howard's turnaround effort, one of the aims of which is to get Sony's various divisions to co-operate more fully. (A spat between its electronics and content units left the field open for Apple's iPod.) The company insists that despite recent problems such as the battery recall, the turnaround is going well behind the scenes.
