I'm thinking of getting a Japanese PS3. Quick questions (I know these have been answered, but the thread is just too big):
- Can I play US Blu-Ray movies and US PS3 games?
- Can I play online with anyone in the world?
- Can I set the device language to English?
- Can I buy stuff from the Store?
- Can I register an username?

Definite yes on US PS3 games, yes on US Blu-Ray movies as well. Japan and US are in the same region for Blu-Ray movies.
- Can I play online with anyone in the world?
For some games yes, like RR7. For Resistance, Insomniac is trying to work out the servers so that you can play online worldwide. They have tested for WW play though...

I have a 720p Samsung DLP and I have no issues with Blu-ray quality. Also, I get several 1080i channels via Dish Network, and I can tell no difference between them and the 720p channels. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones with a good scaler or I'm just not very picky.

I was at a Target making a delivery ( I work for a magazine company). As I was having the receiver sign the delivery invoices, I happened to glance at a box on the floor, and lo and behold, it had two 60gigs in it. The receiver told me they had just got in their third shipment as I was making the delivery (the UPS driver was still parked outside :lol . Needless to say, I snatched one up with the quickness
. Ran up front to the checkstand and paid for it. Picked up Resistance @ Bestbuy on my way home from work and started downloading stuff from the PS Store

And Blu-ray movies look great even though they play in 1080i. My 32" 720p Samsung LCD will be coming to my house next week so I'll see how the quality with that tv will be.
I wonder if all Targets got some today.

I will test out the 1080i though since we have the same TV and I won't be watching sports until next September.
The best HD I have seen outside of the PS3's Blu-ray capability is my local HD PBS station via antenna, which is also in 1080i.

Is anyone else worried about PS3 production numbers? It seems like that pesky blue diode laser is really screwing the ramping up of all products (PS3s, bluray players, and hddvd players) containing blue laser driven devices (bluray and hddvd drives).
Blue laser diodes might screw things up big time for many in the industry if things don't get straightened out soon.

I've had a helluva first 24 hours with my PS3. I haven't even got to try it out that much.
4 different retail stores and 4 different component cables later, and I've finally found one that's not causing interference on my TV.
I had a cheap $5 component cable I used for my PS2. It was causing massive interference so I went to Wal-Mart - no component cables at all there. Next stop - Gamestop and bought a $15 universal component cable because it was all they had - still massive interference. Next stop was Best Buy and I bought a $25 cable -don't remember the brand name but it said designed for PS3 on it and STILL had interference on my TV.
At this point I'm thinking its something with the system so I head back to Best Buy and decide to try the Official PS2 component cable and that seems to be working so far. I think this is one of those cases where you almost need a high quality component cable. I don't know if its because they need extra shielding with the multi-out being so close to the power supply or what. I've always been firmly against overpaying for Monster cables or that $65 Psyclone cable they had at Best Buy, but it looks like its either the official cable or one of these overpriced cables.
Has anyone else had these problems? What kind of component cables are you using?
And can anyone recommend me a good mid-range or even cheap headset and mic to use for PS3 online?

i've always had interference problems with the official ps2 component cable. i solve them by looping the cable around the far side of my entertainment center. i've found that component looks better than hdmi on my tv, so i've just ordered a set of these: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=2039&sku=40579

I completely lost picture for about 30 seconds, but everything is back to normal. Is that the kind of interference you're talking about? I'm using PS2 component cables, btw.

The interference seems like its completely gone away since I tried the official PS2 component cables, but I've got coax inputs and outputs on my surge protector, so I'll run my cable through that tomorrow just to make sure.

Does anyone know about the 1080i scaling issue? My 48" Mitsu rear-projection is 480i/480p/1080i only. It doesn't do anything with a 720p signal. I noticed today while browsing the PS3 games at Best Buy, it seems most 3rd party games support 1080i, but the PS3 first party games from Sony studios don't support 1080i. This makes no sense at all. Does anyone know why? I'm having to play Resistance and the Motorstorm demo in 480p and it really sucks. They seriously don't look much better than Xbox 1 games in 480p. I'm going to be extremely pissed if Sony first party games do not ever plan on supporting 1080i. Its looking now like Motorstorm may not support 1080i, unless they add it on later. We should be getting word from Japan in a couple of weeks when the game releases.
I went to Wal Mart today to get the Zelda strategy guide and they actually had two PS3s in stock. Unfortunately they were both the 60GB model and I'm one of the few who actually want the 20GB model. I thought about buying it, and in the five minutes I was there contemplating one of them was already sold. I decided to leave the other one there for someone who really wanted a 60 gigger.

If Sony's going to chintz on basic IR remote support then the least they could do is justify going Bluetooth only by pushing it's merits as a TWO-WAY communication protocol that doesn't require line of sight. What I'd really like is a BT remote with a small display that lets me at least navigate and play music from the PS3 without having to turn on the TV in order to see what I'm doing.
