Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Heres a n00b question...

Can you play Import PS2 games on the PS3? Considering most games are region free now I was curious if it unlocked the PS2 ones?

Anyone know about this? I thought region lock remained for PS2 games?

All legacy content is still region locked.

My Japanese PS3 says "This disc cannot be started due to region restrictions" when I pop U.S. PS2 games into it. Vice versa is probably the same, I'd think.

so apparantly some UK credit/debit cards work on the store (don't know but I assume its the US one). Mastercard seems fairly successful.

Any UK Gaffers tried this out and if so would they mind sharing which cards they used? It seems to vary by bank.

Yes. It's as good as bought. Perfect movie to show off HD to my friends who have no idea what HD is.

I watched Ice Age 2: Meltdown on my PS3 on Blu-ray and OH MY GOD!!! O_O

The clarity is amazing. I swear to god people please rent or buy this movie. Even my mom was amazed.

Never saw it, never was interested in the movie, but I heard CG movies look OMG-great on Blu-ray. Guess I'll add it to my Netflix queue then.

Umm...why isn't this thread stickied anymore but the Wii thread is still up there? No fanboyism here, just curious...

I'm thinking of getting a Japanese PS3. Quick questions (I know these have been answered, but the thread is just too big):

- Can I play US Blu-Ray movies and US PS3 games?
- Can I play online with anyone in the world?
- Can I set the device language to English?
- Can I buy stuff from the Store?
- Can I register an username?

Chittagong said:

Yes and Yes. All PS3 games are region free. US and JPN share the same region on the blu-ray spec.

Chittagong said:

Depends if the developer allows it.

Chittagong said:

If you're referring to setting the language for the menus, you can change it to English.

Chittagong said:

I think the Playstation store for JPN and US are different... but not sure.

Chittagong said:

You can select the country where the username is from... so, I guess you can register a US account with a JPN PS3.

- Can I play US Blu-Ray movies and US PS3 games?

Definite yes on US PS3 games, yes on US Blu-Ray movies as well. Japan and US are in the same region for Blu-Ray movies.

- Can I play online with anyone in the world?

For some games yes, like RR7. For Resistance, Insomniac is trying to work out the servers so that you can play online worldwide. They have tested for WW play though...

Just got some blu-ray movies from Netflix. Mi3 looks FANTASTIC. I hope this is a sign of things to come. The PS3 is a friggin' QUALITY player. Holy shit!

Some Blu-ray movies, such as MI:3, may look good on PS3 -- but the fact still remains that PlayStation 3 outputs a 1080i signal on 720p native displays... and that f*cking sucks.

I got some from Netflix today too. Terminator 2, House of Flying Daggers, and Unforgiven. Heard that HOFD isn't the best transfer or something, but I hope it still looks pretty nice.

I have a 720p Samsung DLP and I have no issues with Blu-ray quality. Also, I get several 1080i channels via Dish Network, and I can tell no difference between them and the 720p channels. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones with a good scaler or I'm just not very picky.

Looking at Larry Fishburne's complexion in MI3 on Blu-ray is an interesting experience.

I was at a Target making a delivery ( I work for a magazine company). As I was having the receiver sign the delivery invoices, I happened to glance at a box on the floor, and lo and behold, it had two 60gigs in it. The receiver told me they had just got in their third shipment as I was making the delivery (the UPS driver was still parked outside :lol . Needless to say, I snatched one up with the quickness
and the wickedness :p
. Ran up front to the checkstand and paid for it. Picked up Resistance @ Bestbuy on my way home from work and started downloading stuff from the PS Store :D

HOFD is one of the worst transfers in history.

I have a 50" 720p Samsung DLP and have a Dish Networks satellite and I'm the same as you. Does HD channels look better when you set the picture in 1080i for you, because it does for me.

And Blu-ray movies look great even though they play in 1080i. My 32" 720p Samsung LCD will be coming to my house next week so I'll see how the quality with that tv will be.

I have my satellite receiver set to 720p, primarily because ESPN and ESPN2 are in 720p and before both the Ole Miss football team and Eli Manning destroyed my will to watch televised sports, those channels were 90% of my viewing. I will test out the 1080i though since we have the same TV and I won't be watching sports until next September.

The best HD I have seen outside of the PS3's Blu-ray capability is my local HD PBS station via antenna, which is also in 1080i.

Good thing I didn't buy it then. Which movies look the best so far on Blu-ray?

Black Hawk down is really good, but the movie has alot of intentional grain and oversaturation going on. Mission Imposible 3 and Kingdom of Heaven are supposed to be really good transfers too, but I haven't seen them.

Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut, Black Hawk Down, most likely X-men 3, Mission Impossible 3, Ice Age and a few more. 5th Element, HOFD and Talladega Nights do not look that good, as do some earlier BD movies.

That doesn't look like a 60.

Is anyone else worried about PS3 production numbers? It seems like that pesky blue diode laser is really screwing the ramping up of all products (PS3s, bluray players, and hddvd players) containing blue laser driven devices (bluray and hddvd drives).

Blue laser diodes might screw things up big time for many in the industry if things don't get straightened out soon.

I've had a helluva first 24 hours with my PS3. I haven't even got to try it out that much.

4 different retail stores and 4 different component cables later, and I've finally found one that's not causing interference on my TV.

I had a cheap $5 component cable I used for my PS2. It was causing massive interference so I went to Wal-Mart - no component cables at all there. Next stop - Gamestop and bought a $15 universal component cable because it was all they had - still massive interference. Next stop was Best Buy and I bought a $25 cable -don't remember the brand name but it said designed for PS3 on it and STILL had interference on my TV.

At this point I'm thinking its something with the system so I head back to Best Buy and decide to try the Official PS2 component cable and that seems to be working so far. I think this is one of those cases where you almost need a high quality component cable. I don't know if its because they need extra shielding with the multi-out being so close to the power supply or what. I've always been firmly against overpaying for Monster cables or that $65 Psyclone cable they had at Best Buy, but it looks like its either the official cable or one of these overpriced cables.

Has anyone else had these problems? What kind of component cables are you using?

And can anyone recommend me a good mid-range or even cheap headset and mic to use for PS3 online?

i've always had interference problems with the official ps2 component cable. i solve them by looping the cable around the far side of my entertainment center. i've found that component looks better than hdmi on my tv, so i've just ordered a set of these: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=2039&sku=40579

i think they'll improve on the official cables without being monster cable bullshit expensive.

What kind of interference are you talking about? I had a weird thing happen yesterday. My TV started losing the signal from the PS3, causing a blank/red screen. I completely lost picture for about 30 seconds, but everything is back to normal. Is that the kind of interference you're talking about? I'm using PS2 component cables, btw.

No, its the kind of interference that causes faint, but noticeable wavy rippled lines to float up and down the screen. I haven't fully lost the image, yet.

This type of interference can occur from a cable television signal. I recommend disconnecting your cable and trying out the PS3 again. It is highly likely that this is the problem from the way that you describe it.

Ice Age 2...Seriously.

Another vote, I guess I'll definitely add it to my queue then. Is Part 1 on BD as well? Never saw it, so I don't want to watch Part 2 first.

I guess I'll watch MI3 again. Not interested in watching Xmen 3 or Kingdom of Heaven again though.

Where's Spiderman 1 and 2 on BD? Seriously, Sony's using the damn font on the PS3--you'd think they'd time the movie release to coincide.

Seriously. It sounds stupid, but this is legit, and I'm tempted to sticky the thread this little nugget was discovered within.

Officially confirmed now that flOw creators thatgamecompany have signed to a deal with SCE to create three PSN titles. Interestingly, IGN also states Sony has been so impressed with them that they given them their own development space on the SCE Santa Monica lot, and full access to their internal resources.

The other two titles are still unannounced, so keep your fingers crossed for Cloud!

sweet, PSN would definitely benefit from more original downloadable games.... i've got my wallet ready for the microrapements.

Thanks for the tips.

The interference seems like its completely gone away since I tried the official PS2 component cables, but I've got coax inputs and outputs on my surge protector, so I'll run my cable through that tomorrow just to make sure.

Also, I'm sure its been asked a million times, but I haven"t kept up with this thread and i just got my PS3 yesterday...

Does anyone know about the 1080i scaling issue? My 48" Mitsu rear-projection is 480i/480p/1080i only. It doesn't do anything with a 720p signal. I noticed today while browsing the PS3 games at Best Buy, it seems most 3rd party games support 1080i, but the PS3 first party games from Sony studios don't support 1080i. This makes no sense at all. Does anyone know why? I'm having to play Resistance and the Motorstorm demo in 480p and it really sucks. They seriously don't look much better than Xbox 1 games in 480p. I'm going to be extremely pissed if Sony first party games do not ever plan on supporting 1080i. Its looking now like Motorstorm may not support 1080i, unless they add it on later. We should be getting word from Japan in a couple of weeks when the game releases.

I went to Wal Mart today to get the Zelda strategy guide and they actually had two PS3s in stock. Unfortunately they were both the 60GB model and I'm one of the few who actually want the 20GB model. I thought about buying it, and in the five minutes I was there contemplating one of them was already sold. I decided to leave the other one there for someone who really wanted a 60 gigger.

impressive. i would have not been able to do what you just did if i didn't have a PS3 already.

You're not allowed to have one, actually.

That's awesome, I'm glad Sony recognize the talent, hopefully they'll be churning out some memorable games I can download at the Playstation Store. :)

If Sony's going to chintz on basic IR remote support then the least they could do is justify going Bluetooth only by pushing it's merits as a TWO-WAY communication protocol that doesn't require line of sight. What I'd really like is a BT remote with a small display that lets me at least navigate and play music from the PS3 without having to turn on the TV in order to see what I'm doing.
