Also, try to do it before October 26th, but you can change your mind, I know I won't...

We'll measure with 3 months of data, Oct-Nov-Dec '04.

All you have to do is respond either "San Andreas" or "Halo 2", but you can expand on your reasoning if you want.

I say: Halo 2.

More hype, more anticipation by fans, XBox sales up/PS2 sales down, more retail push, more marketing by Microsoft.

Vice City sold 4 million copies in 2002. Halo 2 is already 1/4 of the way there with pre-orders. The "LE" edition for Halo 2 will also help. Heck, even I'm thinking of getting it so I'll have the "cool" version of the game once I do get an XBox.

My prediction:

Halo 2 - 4 million
San Andreas - 3.75 million.

SA: PS2 consoles sales up or down will have no effect on the fact that there is a huge userbase already waiting to pick this title up.

San Andreas - I say most of the people hyped for this game are not online enmass and that's why you see less online hype compared to Halo 2.

I'm going with the safe bet and saying GTA:SA. I honestly don't think Halo 2 will become the best selling game of this generation...GTA:SA is pretty much going to sell more than Vice City, that much we know. So for Halo 2 has to beat not only GTA:SA, but Vice City and GTA 3, I just can't see that happening. I don't even know if I think Halo 2 will sell more than Vice City did.

I'm going to go with the dark horse and vote Halo 2.

The sales ranks at Amazon.com is interesting:

GTA:SA is #1, Halo 2:LE is #2 and Halo 2 regular edition is #3.

I think Turkeys will sell more this Christmas.

I always thought Ham was more of a Xmas food. Turkeys are strictly for Thanksgiving.

...I'll take Halo 2. Two weeks left until SA launches, and I'm not feeling any hype. 4 weeks until Halo 2 launches, and people are already getting excited.

Microsoft marketing wins this time.

You must not work at a gamestore,

I've said October 26th too many damn times in the last week.

GTA:SA easily.

More interesting will be: Who will win November NPD? With only 5 days of sales in Oct, I don't think you can count out GTA:SA.

I think a better thread would be: "Which will score higher at Gamerankings?" :p

Or maybe. "What site will scream for attention to get hits by scoring GTA:SA/Halo 2 below a 9? first?"

BTW: i think GTA will sell more but it wont be by alot.

SA.

Because it isn't "unhip" to own a GTA title. (Not that it's unhip to own Halo 2... just that the US in it's entirety is more open to GTA).

Not in Europe, or more specifically the UK where we slaughter millions of the buggers ready for Xmas day (and boxing day and the day after that all the way to the new year to be honest). All in the aid of that afternoon sleep in front of the TV when the Only Fools and Horses Xmas special is being aired. Anyway its still turkeys to win for me.

If the two games were shipping the same day, then I might would go with the underdog Halo 2. But, with a two week headstart and a much larger user base, its silly not to pick SA.

The real question that should be asked is which game will people still be playing in March? ;)

I think we all know the answer to that.

San Andreas. All the Xdudes will be dropping Halo 2 to pick up the Xbox port around that time. ;)

GTA easily but that doesn't mean it won't suck again. That series is pure garbage, and I relate all its sales to the same phenomina as Barbie and Dear Hunter selling so well for all those years.

Halo 2 GOTY. :)

Well GTA gives replay value like no other single player game. The single player game of any fps is usually only good for 1 or 2 plays, after that you know pretty much know the when, were, and how, and it gets stale.

Multiplayer is the key to Halo2's long life and it'll be up to Bungie how long Halo2 stays fresh. Hopefully they will release new maps, modes, etc on a regular basis. But i doubt they will, there's just no incentive for console devs to make their succesful games last longer. So hopefully there's a lot to Halo2's mutiplayer out of the box. And i hope i can get a xbox mouse/kb adapter to work with halo2.

edit

oh and I think San Andreas will sell more

I still think Halo2 will out sell GTA. I know it's a stupid thought. But the buzz surrounding this game is incredible.
We shall see.
I do know that all other games this Christmas are D00m3d. If Ubisoft thought that Prince of Persia sold poorly last Christmas. I hate to see how it's going to do when it's up against these two games.
It is not gonna be pretty at all.

XBox sales up/PS2 sales down

What do you think will sell more once the new redesigned PS2 hits and the shortages are over? By a huge amount? Holiday hardware sales will definitely affect the sales of these two games. They will both me the "must get" games for people buying the hardware.

Would you be surprised to know that you're wrong? :D

1) Vice City sold 4.5 million copies in 2002 not 4 million.
2) Vice City sold 4 million preorders to retailers, not 1 million.
3) Microsoft clarified the preorder number as being 750k, not 1 million. It will probably make it to 1 million easily, but it's not there yet, and you seem to be insinuating that preorders would be substantially higher than 1 million.

Also, the percentage of LE games that are sold with the regular edition will be insignificant as a percentage. It will, however, be a very nice windfall for Microsoft. Guaranteed another couple of million $ profit.

ok, I was talking about customer pre-orders, not store pre-orders.

I mean, if 4 million people had pre-ordered Vice City, does that mean only 500,000 were sold in November and December?

Halo 2 has more or less 1 million CUSTOMER pre-orders, with more piling up every day.

Ok, I was a little off on the 4.5 figure for Vice City in '02. Either way, it's facing much more competition than it did back in 2002.

I also forgot to mention that both of these titles need to watch out for NFS: Underground 2. It was a Christmas hit last year and I'm sure it's almost as anticipated as either San Andreas or Halo 2.

I would have GTA:SA, I don't think Halo2 gonna have much of an affect that it would keep PS2 gamers from picking up the game. Halo2 may sell more consoles, but in the end userbase will be the catalyst.

Still way too early to guess. If MS keeps pouring on the advertisements, Halo 2 could squeak by GTA. Still think that GTA will take it though.
