Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Sales estimates for the OG Oblivion put it at about 10m copies sold between PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Do you think the Remastered version will top that?

For context, Skyrim sold about 60m copies on all systems to date, so it only needs to sell about 1/6th as well as Skyrim to meet this goal. Also keep in mind that the combined install base for PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5 is significantly higher than twenty years ago when Oblivion was originally released.

What do you think GAF? Will lifetime sales top the original?

Over its lifetime, probably yes. A lot of Skyrim curious folks will want to check it out on top of the old timers.

Let's just say if it does that's telling of what state gaming is in these days. Remasters are greatly outselling a lot of new games.

Yes, and a Skyrim remaster would move 30-40 million units...and all of you know goddamn well that it's going to happen in the next 5-10 years.

My only problem with that is Morrowind is just being abandoned to time. :(

I think it will easily break 5m copies, 10m active players too, but 10m copies? Hard to say, its a gamepass title day1 after all so it has to affect sales negatively, and not by lil bit.
Ofc i wish it the best, not only 10m copies but 20m copies sold :P

10mil is a lot but I won't be at all surprised.

Quality doesn't need to be a factor, it's simple maths.

The TES fan base is larger than it was 20 years ago, so a larger percentage of the total audience will likely buy it.

The total audience of platforms it's available on is much bigger than it was 20 years ago.

A bigger percentage of a bigger number.

It probably will.

Lots of gamers never played the original and with how massive Skyrim is, chances are a chunk of the people who played that game, will play the Oblivion remake.

I mean, shit, a few here even admitted they never played it and bought the remake. So I think its an easy bet to say yes it will.

It's the next entry in the TES series following the timeless Skyrim. Many didn't experience the original 20 years ago, and even for those who did, two decades is more than enough time to revisit a classic.

Depends. Will it come to Switch 2?
tbh, no it doesn't lol

I think it will move more units, even without a Switch 2 version, a Switch 2 version will help yes, but will not be the determining factor.

1. Lots didn't play Oblivion, that may have played Skyrim, even those here in this forum, so its still new to them.

2. The continued popularity of Skyrim, those fans will buy this regardless if they played the original or not, so I think you can count a massive amount of the existing people that bought the original.

3. Many might play this that are new to Elder Scrolls IN GENERAL, as in never played Skyrim, never played anything prior etc

We have more gamers now, then any other time in the industry, it is not unusual btw for the remake, to outsell the original

So I want to be clear...Resident Evil 2 sold 5 million units.....its remake sold 15 million units, we are not going to fucking sit here and pretend as if it MUST HAVE BEEN the PS and XB combo that must have got those sales, RE2 released on PS1, GC, N64, Dreamcast, PC and finally PSN on PS3.

So the remake will sell better, based on it getting the old install base, getting new fans of the IP, existing fans of the IP that never played it etc.

Probably if that 10mil number is true but i have a hrd time believing Oblivion 'only' sold 10mil. I mean i know Elder Scrolls was fairly niche until Oblivion which blew up, but still i would of thought it sold more than 10mil copies over every platform.
I mean Skyrim 60mil, Fallout 4 40mil, Oblivion 10mil?. It just seems off to me.

Refardless i do feel the remaster will sell more than 10mil, and i dont feel Gamepass will have that much effect as i feel this is the kind of game that most people are going to want to own, especially Oblivion fans.

That's the big break where a game somehow suddenly sells way more than any of their pervious titles by a huge amount. Skyrim was Elder Scroll's big break, Fallout 4 for the Fallout series, Witcher 3 for the Witcher series, BOTW for Zelda, Monster Hunter World for the Monster Hunters series, GTA V for the GTA series etc. Besides the pervious game getting people interested, it'll also need other things like the good word and leg plus the stars and dimensional rift being in the correct path and timing, and some luck in the mix for a series to get a big break.

The Remaster should definitely go beyond 10 million but won't be anywhere close to a New Elder Scroll game since people would either see it's not a gigantic budget AAA game, just a remaster of the same game, or waiting for Skyblivion, among other reasons. I predict the Oblivion Remaster eventually being around the 20 million copies sold range while Elder Scrolls VI should go towards the 70 million range.

The Switch 2 is poised to be another 100 million+ selling console. The Xbox console space is rapidly shrinking, and PS is simply eating into Xbox share. It's essentially stagnant/ even with PS4.

I fully understand your argument, but It absolutely matters whether or not this game launches on Switch 2, whether it reaches a certain level of success. It absolutely does. It's essential that this game launches on Switch 2 if they want this game to hit those kinds of numbers.

I don't know about that bud

What did Switch 1 sell regarding Skyrim?

Having 100 million doesn't mean they give a shit about those games btw...so I would maybe relax those expectations..

Thats like saying Assassins Creed or Call Of Duty or GTA MUST RELEASE on Switch to be successful more move massive units or something weird like this

Yet those are IP that broke records minus all their releases on Switch or Nintendo systems, look at Monster Hunter World 2, its breaking those records WITHOUT SWITCH

So...this IP has moved massive units without Switch, the idea it would need Switch 2 to this figure is odd as nothing historically supports that. PS eating XB Share, doesn't mean those that stop buying XB in favor of PS HATE games, they simply buy the same things they love on PS or PC etc.

That doesn't mean Switch will fill that void as clearly, is has not become the home of Madden, Fifa, Call Of Duty and many more with a requirement of a release on Nintendo to be successful, so maybe lets relax with all that as I don't see anything even near that happening to make it seem as if Oblivion hitting that number is solely based on as Switch release

Well the Skyrim comparison really isn't helpful though, in this context. It had released and had its full sales cycle many years before Switch came out. And had been ported and re-ported to multiple console generations. Whereas this situation now is entirely different.

I'm sure you see the difference, prolly doesn't need anymore explaining.

Probably not but it would be awesome if it did.
I wonder if more people are looking at it from a nostalgia perspective or playing it for the first time and seeing it as a fresh new elder scrolls game...

It's prolly pretty much even. Console space is so much bigger than it was in 2006 Xbox 360 era. As for me, it's been so long since i played it might as well be a brand new game. 🤷‍♂️

lol stop man, that install base didn't buy that game to a degree where the IP now MUST release on Switch in order to hit solid figures.

This is the same situation.

Its a install base that mainly plays Nintendo's own IP and I don't see that changing..

The console space being bigger doesn't mean Nintendo fans are now the install base to carry Elder Scrolls... that 100 million doesn't even give much of a shit about 3rd party games for what you are claiming to ever make sense..

Well you've added a bunch of stuff. I'm not talking about the ES IP, I'm talking specifically about this game's remake. That's originally what we were talking about. My point stands. The game really needs to be ported to Switch 2 in order to reach a broader audience. The Switch platform will grow like crazy once 2 launches. Xbox console audience is extremely limited. PS and Steam don't cover it all anymore. Nintendo's platform is no longer just this weird other audience that only buy Nintendo games. That ended with the Switch's introduction. It's not the Wii and DS era anymore. The Switch audience is essential.

Sure, it doesn't need to be ported to Switch 2 to move more units then Oblivion original. We have already seen many, many remakes outsell their originals with zero Switch version to know this is not needed sir...

The Switch platform will grow like crazy once 2 launches
Sure, that doesn't mean its install base will magically start carrying about different IP, where is this base right now with 3rd party releases like Elder Scrolls, Call Of Duty, Madden, Fifa? I say this to point out, if it is going to grow and replace some audience, we would already see that right now with Switch 1, why the fuck would you need ALSO Switch 2 to make this claim when Switch 1 gives you all the data to even support if it can happen? What would make Switch 2 different in this regard?

So Nintendo's platform is still the house that Mario built man, they put Doom on that system, WWF, Resident Evil and all sorts of shit and it didn't change that those install bases bought them the least

Unless you can prove that magically that has changed, I do not see that Switch 2 will be any different then Switch 1 in terms of how that install base buys games.

nah Skyrim remake will move monster units sir

You have GOG and mods and shit on Oblivion too and clearly the remake is moving monster units lol

Having mods or the original version doesn't mean people will ignore a remake, we are seeing that right now with Oblivion, not sure why you think we wouldn't see that same thing with Skyrim, the bigger of the 2 lol

Keep in mind, I have nothing against mods or anything like that, simply that millions upon millions do not care about what you posted, the will get the Skyrim remake and have fun, even those that mod like myself will buy the remake of Skyrim. Modding a game doesn't mean I won't buy its remake lol

Open mw isn't a mod really. It's basically a huge patch

Easy yes. Skyrim created alot of TES fans, and alot of oldschool TES players will still buy it for nostalgia. Oblivion is my least favorite TES game, but i might still buy it in a few years for a nostalgia run. I think Morrowind would have been a better game to remaster/ Remake.

I know, my point still stands

None of that replaces a remake and I don't see that millions even care about that for it to ever get in a the way of a remake, majority will favor a ground up remake, just like you are seeing with Oblivion.

So if mods, patches, update etc were so fucking good, you would not see Oblivion remaster moving those monster units. None of that will ever be in place of a full on remake and I've yet to see that ever happen in this industry for that myth to ever make sense

It must be put to rest man, MODS, UPDATES, PATCHES etc are not fucking remakes and zero mod or patch has ever outsold a remake...
