Official "Which will sell more this Christmas, San Andreas or Halo 2?" thread.

GTA:SA easily. I'm just not buying that Halo 2 is going to sell some crazy 4 million type figure. The first Halo is just topping the 3.5 million sold mark at this point..

I think we should draw a line in the sand.

Those that say it will anywhere near 4 million on one side + those that say it will sell less than 2 million on the other.

When the December NPD comes in, the winners get to throw tomatoes at the losers and choose the losers tags :D

GTA should sell more just because there are so many more PS2's on the market but Halo is like the Goldeneye of the N64, just about everybody bought a copy. I'm quite sure Halo 2's sales will surpass Halo 1.

It's really a tough call.

SA without a doubt (especially if the commercial is anything like that last trailer). Don't be surprised to see Halo 2 get outsold 2:1.

An extremely popular game series on a console with a very large install base versus an extremely popular game series on another console with a much smaller install base. San Andreas easily.

GTA:SA... Halo 2 will probably end up being the better game, though I thought the level design was weak, Bungie knows how to make a solid, cohesive engine... which is definitely more than I can say for Rockstar.

Funny you should mention that, since Comedy Central and MTV have started showing the commercial featuring the Guns 'N Roses song. It looks like it has a bit of footage replaced from the trailer version that's been available for download for a few weeks now.

Nice to see it on high quality TV though.

GTA easily but that doesn't mean it won't suck again. That series is pure garbage, and I relate all its sales to the same phenomina as Barbie and Dear Hunter selling so well for all those years.

Halo 2 GOTY. :)

WTF! mate

I don't understand this thread. You'd have to be completely blinded by Xbox love not to say GTA SA, which will obviously sell a lot more.

GTA:SA will sell more. Halo 2 will sell between 2 and 2.5 million copies before christmas. GTA will sell 3 million+. But both will be great games, no need to bicker there.

GTASA is becoming more of a rental for me. then theres the fact that all those people went out and REPURCHASED double pack for xbox even after already owning the ps2 version. those same people will no doubt wait for the xbox version this time.

What's the advantage of waiting for the Xbox version? It's not like it's gonna be playable on Live..if I were gonna wait for some reason to buy GTA:SA (which I wont) it would be for the PC version.

Oh and GTA:SA to the original topic.

oh come on. dont act like the xbox version wasnt enhanced over the ps2 versions. PC version? i'll take console comfort. thanks. the Xbox version is rumored for feb-march 2005. one could also say hmmmm...i only have $50 to spend, i'll get halo 2 now and wait for the better version of GTA in a few months.

as said in the other thread:

Why do you even need to ask?

Vice City outsold the original Halo's total within two months. Grand Theft Auto is simply the bigger series.

Yeah Xbox version was a little nicer, but 6 months wait nicer? I know you'd rather have a console version, but for me if I'm gonna wait 6 months I want a version that blows it away graphically, and controls better.

GTAIII/GTAVC graphically PC>>>>>>>>>>Xbox>PS2

Meh, after the PC version, it wasn't a big upgrade. It did look and run a bit nicer, but it was nowhere near as smooth as the PC version. 60 fps + 4x AA and 8x AF at 1024x768? I was VERY suprised that it ran so smoothly, but it did...

I think I'll wait to play this until it hits the PC.

I won't be suprised by any number that these two games end up putting up, but there's a very significant chance that Halo 2 won't even be the number 2 seller.

Madden PS2 (both versions) have already sold 1.5 million in one month. If they can sell as well as they did last year through the holidays, it could easily be over 3 million.

Also, Pokemon Fire/Leaf Green, was reported by Nintendo to have already sold a million copies in September (released Sept 7th). Whether that was shipped or sell through is unknown, but I could easily see these games topping 3 million as well.

It seems unfair to count multiple skus, but Halo 2 will have 2, Madden (PS2) will have 2, and so will Pokemon (GBA). The Pokemon has the most differential between the 2 skus, with Madden being next, and Halo 2 having absolutely no differential in gameplay.

Uhm not to disappoint you, but the PC version wil be released on 30th September 2005!!. Thats little more then 6 months. Besides i like to play it on PS2 since i have gotten used to it playing with the controller and all. I have a USB adapter so i can use the controller on the PC, but me aint no waitin 11 months!!!.

And its not like i dont have the right system to run it on (3.0 ghz 1,5 gb ram, Radeon 9800).

"All those people"? You really think it's that many? GTA double pack sold 1.1 million on Xbox. How many of those do you think were repurchases vs. Xbox owners without PS2? Being generous, say 20% of the 1.1 million was repurchases. Again being generous, say half of the repurchases decide to wait for the (unanounced) Xbox version to be released who knows when. Wow, we're talking 110,000 sales affected out of the 6.1+ the game has the potential to sell. This repurchased issue is beyond moot.

BTW, GTA double pack sold 609,000 on PS2, even though both games had long been available on the system and had already sold an astronomical amount.

How are you guys going to count this? GTA: SA is going to have a month lead. Halo 2 is going to need to make up at least 1 mil.

I think for the month of Nov. though Halo 2 will easily be the biggest. The initial shipment is just insane. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it does exceed 2 million for November. The thing is will it hold up in Dec. to stay a head of GTA: SA? I have no idea.

I'm getting the PS2 version (said that before). What I said was if I was going to wait, it would be for the PC version not for the Xbox version.

And actually I didn't know the PC version was far off.

GTA:SA 10/25
Halo2 11/08
I'm talking about how we can track it. GTA:SA will have a month lead by the NPD numbers most of us hear follow. In that week it can easily sell 1 mil.

Yes, and a large portion of Halo 2's sales for November, perhaps half, will be in the first week it is available. I think total sales up to the end of December is a fair comparison of sales for the two games, as January sales will be way down from those months.

As for me, GTA:SA +1 Halo 2 +1 Winner? Me.

I've yet to do the math, but there's not much in it.

It's a bit unfair with the time span seeing as GTA will have an extra two weeks on sale compared to Halo 2.

GTA:SA sold more no matter how you look at it. 2 weeks != extra 1 million in sales. And although this is only considering the "up until Christmas" sales, GTA:SA still has incredible sales while Halo 2's drops off considerably.

Because, well, there are simply way, way more PS2 owners to sell GTA:SA to :P

Where is the thread that had like 50 prediction questions. I got the top seller and top game on game rankings prediction right...

Actually Halo 2 has sold more copies per day, thus far. It's not a 2 million difference, go back to summer school.

It's near 1 million, first of all. Second of all, 2 weeks does NOT make the difference in this case. Had Halo 2 and GTA:SA been released simulateously, GTA:SA would still have sold more. But that's pointless to speculate. Halo 2 simply has NOT sold more by Christmas, it's that simple. Sales back this up. Not to mention GTA:SA still has momentum while Halo 2 is dropping dramatically every day.

Well of course, 2 years from now, a 2 week difference isn't going to matter in LTD. I never said on this forum that Halo 2 would outsell GTA:SA. I stated the fact that it has sold more on average in the "Christmas timespan" as stated by the topic title. Nothing more.
