“Wolverine’s” impressive bow came despite a working copy of the movie being pirated a month before the film’s opening. Studio isn’t sure how much the piracy ate into the box office, but some insiders suggest it could be as much as $20 million.

AHH SHUT THE FUCK UP! JUST SHUT UP. Fucking MPAA.

Watchmen was $150m too.

And every single buck was used to awesome use including the CGI. For wolverine however, it looks like it was spend on shooting and reshooting and reshooting and reshooting.

Really? I'm surprised that a lot of you are surprised that Wolverine did so well. It's X-Men. The general population gets off on that shit.

So much for the wild GAF speculation that it would have an enormous drop. :lol :lol Seriously, everyone I know not on the teh internets who has seen it enjoyed it.

Er, wait until next weekend before saying it hasnt had a huge drop. When it drops 65% next weekend, you'll see.

A very poorly reviewed movie makes almost 90 mil during a recession and they attribute 20 mil to piracy?

Lol.

Looks like being leaked didn't hurt Wolverine in the slightest this weekend. It was completely sold out at my theater at over 740 people between the two screens it was showing on for every show.

People really are sheep. They flock to nearly anything. I can't belive such a suck ass movie is still doing so well despite having so many odds stacked against it.

I mean seriously after it leaked a month early and got such massivly bad word of mouth I thought it was a mistake to have it on more then one screen at my theater but it turns out it was a brillant move to keep it to two screens.... hell we could have afforded a third screen and made even more cash at the rate tickets where selling.

*sigh* I hate the lowest common dinominator

How about considering other multiple things. Like how it's a spinoff, has really negative fan word of mouth, got leaked online a month before it opened, doesn't continue the story from the first 3 X-men movies, has a shit RT score, etc.

87 million is a really good opening. I don't think anyone can deny that. Star Trek isn't getting anything close to that next week. Cry.

Haha considering I'm not even a star trek fan, I really couldn't care less:lol :lol :lol

relax man, it's gunna drop hard next week that's all I'm saying. Bitter Tears? I can't tell.

people having no taste CONFIRMED.

How is that having no taste? Because they don't go to RottenTomatoes.com? You realize the general public doesn't have a fucking clue what goes on on the internet right? And that they don't care what Fox did to Deadpool because they don't even know who Deadpool is?

Tons of people in the GAF thread who DO look at RottenTomatoes went and saw it.

Wolverine was going to open big no matter if it was rubbish or not, it's a critic proof movie that opened with no competition.

Shame as it validates the 'care' and 'respect' that Fox takes over it's genre movies and that if you throw shit against a wall sometimes a piece will stick. :lol

just because people went to see it doesn't mean the movie isn't fucking awful. most of the gaffers who KNEW it was bad, went and saw it, and then agreed it sucked. bad movies are usually in the top 5 and the most popular. that means the general public has BAD TASTE. capiche? guess what? CSI Miami gets 10x the ratings The Wire ever got. Popularity doesn't mean shit, in fact it usually means something is pretty casual/accessible to the general public.

It's great that Jackman will very likely get to play the character again, but if such a mess of a film is this successful it gives Fox zero incentive to make the next X-men movie accurate/good.

Though really, they're right not to care, 'cos I'm gunna fucking pay to see the next one aswell. :lol

Lack of reading comprehension much? Way to put words in my mouth.

Nowhere in what you quoted did I even hint at the movie not being awful. I replied to someone who said people have bad taste because the movie did well, not because people liked it.

Capiche?

From what I hear from my cousin, the movie wasn't good regardless of Deadpool. He's the most casual X-men fan out there (probably doesn't even know who deadpool is), and he thought the movie was just too disjointed to work.

The biggest problem with bad superhero movies is that they try to cram way too many characters in one movie.

Don't ignore the fact a lot of people just want to turn off their brain for 90 minutes. The film does its job as a mindless popcorn flick.

Yeah, my friend saw it last night, and she's pretty casual, and she said the CGI REALLY bothered her.

Sad times. Hopefully it has no legs.

This post is the epitome of hating.

If YOU don't like it, than YOU don't see it.

I would NEVER see a Sex in the City movie, but I'd also never call foul on it doing well.

And no, I didn't see Wolverine this weekend and don't plan on seeing it either.

"...B-b-b-but they messed up Deadpool!"

By the way, who the fuck is DeadPool?

It'll see a pretty big drop next weekend, and will probably finish around 150 mil. It could potentially make it the lowest grossing x-men movie (but it'll probably beat the first one's take of 157). Hopefully they'll listen to the reviews and make the next one good.

edit: Oh and cut out the x-men prequel bullshit.

Well, gaf is the epitome of hate and negativity towards most movies.

Glad to see Wolverine do well. It was an ok action flick.
And the general public doesnt give a crap about "the critics" and their reviews. "if the critics dont like it, it must be pretty good" is a pretty common saying.

It wont last, there's a whole crapload of movies coming out this summer.

wtf happened to Crank? Not even $15 million yet.

Domestic: $13,275,000 48.5%
+ Foreign: $14,114,016 51.5%
= Worldwide: $27,389,016

Cost under $20 mil to make.

Add in the inevitable big DVD sales, and it's done well.

I always found these comments stupid...If I turn off any actual thought, any movie could be enjoyable. :lol Anytime we get a crappy movie, Its always the same excuse. Well its just supposed to be a mindless popcorn flick! You shouldn't think while watching it.

Audiences will forgive gaps in logic and contrived plot exposition as long as they get their action fix, is what I meant. Wolverine is a poor film, especially when judged against the first two. But it has action, humour, Jackman's sweaty pecs and a 90 minute runtime. It's not hard to see why the film has done well.

Let's go Bub.

I'm happy for Jackman, not fox or any of the corporate goons, just Jackman.
That's pretty much where I am on this. Don't care about the movie at all. Just wish Jackman success.

I wonder if Taken will still make the top 20 in 2 weeks after it's DVD is out. That's some crazy legs.

Are people really that shocked that Wolverine did well despite it being a not that great film?

I bet all you people who are upset went and saw it too along with all us unenlightened masses. You're part of the problem! Either that or you're a pirate.

Of course it made that much money, it's the big release right now and most people aren't going to know it sucks until they see it. You also can't expect randoms to know or care that they fucked up a beloved character. Honestly, what I want to know is - If regular people don't know who deadpool is or how they fucked he character, then why not just make the character (deadpool) a NEW character and call him something else? They already changed him enough that it basically a new character, why even use the name? I don't believe it's purely name recognition; people who know deadpool won't buy it, and people who don't wouldn't care anyway.

I agree with this.

I'd like to know when the Fox deal with Marvel runs out for making X-men movies.

If I were Jackman, I'd refuse to do any more until a competent studio gets the franchise.
Why? He's a producer for this one. He gets paid %wise on the profits no?
Unlike Catwoman Jackman knows this is shit and is taking the cash.
