Just bought a 360. I've had my Wii since launch and enjoyed it. But needed something more meaty.. For lack of a better word. I really enjoy the fact that 360 has arcade games, as opposed to console ports of arcade games such as on the Wii. Last weekend was the first time I'd got my hands on a 360 with a bunch of friends. I was instantly sold.

Anyway. Is there anything on xblah that I should have my eye on? I already have a number of xblah games on my list to buy (Double Dragon, SF2 Turbo, Geometry Wars, Smash TV). But is there anything else that I might not know about that I should at least consider?

I would stay away from Smash TV and SF2 Turbo. The D-Pad makes the game unplayable and you can play Smash TV for free (when the "You must buy this game to continue" screen pops up, just hit start). You could also pick up Doom, unless you want to wait until Marathon.

Double Dragon was awfull. ID replace that with TMNT instead.

DD is pretty terrible and Robotron is much, much better than Smash.

Almost all of the non-classic games are pretty good. Catan, Marble Blast Ultra, Pac-Man CE, Lumines, and Eets are probably the best. Just grab some demos and try the stuff out.

my personal top 10:

Cloning Clyde
Pac-Man CE
Marble Blast Ultra
Prince of Persia Classic
Eets: Chowdown
3D Ultra Minigolf (lots of fun with 4 players online)
Assault Heroes
Heavy Weapon
Alien Hominid HD
Jetpac Refuelled
UNO

Oh and pick up Aegis Wing too, it's free. Don't bother with Double Dragon IMO. It's not as good as you might be remembering it, it doesn't hold up well at all. There are downloadable trials for every game though which is great for seeing what you like.

SH5 announcement sell ya? Seems like IIRC you were holding out for that or maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

Oh yea, my 1 suggestion for an XBLA title would be SOTN.

That's me alright. But it wasn't SH5 that got me (it's being done by different devs and I'm not completely sold on it yet for that reason). I had always planned to get a 360 but I was waiting on two things:

1. A price drop.

2. Hardware failure rate addressed.

The extended warranty helped number 2 not be such an issue (even though it still is I guess). As for the price drop... It sort of became a non factor.

Last weekend my friends and I got together for another one of our drunken gaming nights. This was the first time one of them brought along a 360. While the Wii is still the ultimate party machine and it never saw rest the entire night. I realised with some of the stuff we were playing on 360 that it was just a more meaningful experience, at least in a... Just sit and play games sort of way. I was missing out on incredible games and I didn't want to wait for a price drop anymore. So here I am with my new purchase.

Someone suggested DOOM. I think I'll get that too.

Worms, Alien Hominid, Jetpac Refuelled and Prince of Persia: Classic are good fun. Get Bomberman Live! this week too, while you're at it. Eets: Chowdown is excellent if you're looking for a puzzle game that doesn't involve falling blocks. Pac-Man: Championship Edition is the only good XBLA game Namco made up to this point, so you might consider that one too.

Don't own the game myself, but I'd stay away from DOOM if I were you. Heard the game was pretty buggy or very laggy when playing it through Xbox Live. Marathon seems like a valid replacement, with 8 player co-op among other things.

They both play just fine with an analog stick. It's the shoddy netcode that made SF2: Hyper Fighting unplayable.

Is anyone else totally not caring about Bomberman?

Granted Ive never played it - but those videos dont make it seem too appealing.

I am wondering if anybody here has played the PC version of Switchball?

It's actually a very nice Game. Looks great and the Marbel Madness meets Physics Gameplay is awsome. It started out pretty easy but the last World should be pretty challenging for everybody. Just a great. You should look forward to it on 360, i highly recommend it.

TMNT.

Get it now.

Smash TV is fun, but ridiculously hard in co-op.
Assault heroes is worth getting, and online co-op has finally been fixed (so it works now)

Streets of Rage 2 cant come soon enough. I pray it isnt a shoddy port.

Plus Bomberman this week should be good.

Sonic 2 is coming too! Wow! Sonic 1 was already awesome, and now Sonic 2 too? That's great. But will Sonic 2 include the Super Sonic cheat? I loved that.
I doubt you will be able to access the sound test options, like how the game skips to act one instantly in sonic 1 xbla. Though there are more then 7 posts in the first two stages giving you the ability to be supersonic by the first boss :D

It is one of those nostalgia games. I always hated bomberman but I'm going to buy it early as I assume when gowans gets back from his tour of denmark we'll have a lot of XBLAing to do as he almost certainly "played it on the amiga back in '93" :lol

I bought it a while ago. Camera Control is a bitch, but it shouldn't be a problem if you are able to control the camera with the left analog stick. Graphics are beautiful, and the Gameplay is a LOT more puzzle-based than Marble Blast Ultra.

How do you not care about online, multiplayer Bomberman?

I guess SapientWolf pointed out the problem is I just havent been exposed to Bomberman before. Ill most certainly try it out though as Im a huge supporter of XBLA. I guess I just imagined something different in my head when everyone started going on about this game called "Bomberman" coming to arcade:lol

I guess everybdoy forgot about Marble Blast Ultra. ANyway, Marble Madness would be a nice fit for the XBLA not that I think about it.

Not only that, but isnt it 8 player online? whacking it on with a bunch of friends cant fail at being fun. hopefully

*waits for the trial version*

Problem with marble blast is once you beat the single player modes and get the online achievements theres not much reason to play it again unless a friend wants to go online with it.

I love the game and the original on xbox arcade but yeah.

Marble Blast was a lot of fun when you had some friends over and you tried to beat each other's times. I guess I'm just a nut when it comes to Marble games. I love to roll around.

Eh. Won't be getting any of those games after all. E68 error on boot, straight out of the box.

Sigh.
lol. go get another box, pronto!
but right before that, just for statistics, try if your 360 runs ok without the hdd.

Are you from Australia, perhaps? IIRC that's the HDD error code and there's athread about a batch of faulty 360 HDDs in Australia.

Edit:
Thread in question:

Which you've found yourself, I see.

Yeah, posted in there before I even bought the thing. There was nothing really concrete about all systems, so I took a leap and bought anyway. Boy, is my face red
(lit up by the red rings amirite)

I've never played it and I think this may be my 2nd game that I will blind purchase (purchasing without playing the trial version)

I'm one of the few defenders of Double Dragon on here. I say if it interests you, download the trial. I think it's a fun game and well worth the $5 price of admission, particularly if you grew up on the arcade game or have an HDTV.

A trio of hands-on previews via Joystick.

Battlestar Galatica

Don't expect deep gameplay with this title based on the popular science fiction series. Battlestar Galactica, for Xbox Live Arcade and PC, is 3D space shooter played on a 2D plane. The controls are quick to grasp -- turning, shooting, activating shields and locking on for missiles -- although we had a bit of trouble initially with chasing enemies.

We only had a chance to try out a couple of levels. There are four ships to choose from each side, humans and Cylons, each with various offensive, defensive and speed ratings. Death triggers a respawn, and the only penalty is lost time (beating levels is generally dependent upon time).

There are 10 single-player missions based on battles from the show. Multiplayer has its own set of ten maps and two gameplay types: deathmatch and domination, where you capture turrets that destroy the opponent's base ship.

According to producer Connie Brammeier, the game is intended for mass appeal. We get the feeling that hardcore Battlestar Galactica fans are going to be disappointed by the lack of depth in the title. The game is expected out in the third quarter of this year.

Commanders: Attack!

The first thing to came to our minds when we saw Commanders: Attack! is Nintendo's turn-based strategy series Advance Wars. It's not a bad comparison, but it does give you an accurate description of how the game is played: two sides taking turns, moving troops, capturing buildings and entering attack / counter-attack combat with other troops.

Where it differs from the game, most obviously, is the high-definition visuals. Also, while each Commanding Officer has special stat bonuses and abilities, troops cannot enjoy the bonus unless they are within the officer's sphere of influence. The art style of the troops is inspired by what people in the 1930s thought the future might look like.

A fog of war is set for all maps. All in all, there are 15 campaign missions and six maps for the four-player multiplayer modes. Alongside the currently-available Band of Bugs, it's good to see quality strategy titles invade the Xbox Live Arcade. Commanders: Attack! is due out by the end of this year for both the XBLA and the PC.

Switchball
It's the age-old story of a ball trying to find its home, retold in high-definition visuals for the Xbox 360 and PC. Our two-level demo for Switchball had us traversing over wooden planks, building bridges out of crates, and plowing into metal boxes with our metalball upgrade. It's a simple "get from point A to point B" title with simple controls but still a fun, casual game.

What impressed us most is the physics of the game, particularly in one area where we had to roll on a hanging piece of cloth. There are six levels spanning five worlds, for a total of 30. We were told there will be multiplayer options for up to 8 players, both co-op and competitive modes. Switchball is already out on PC and due out in August for Xbox Live Arcade.

I think that is about it for IGN, I'll deal with Gamespot in due time.

Right here is the collection of Gamespot's E3 XBLA coverage, which to say the least is rather lacking.

Shard, are you going to make a separate Bomberman Live thread tonight or tomorrow? I think the game will be popular enough to need one, and well, you're the XBLA master ninja around here. :)

Could have sworn Wario 64 covered that on Friday, but if you want one from me, I can do it. First, I gotta round up the 1UP XBLA coverage.

Shard, I really appreciate all the work you've done for the XBLA threads. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't know about 95% of the news regarding XBLA releases. I think I speak for everyone here that you've done a great job and thank you.

This probably hit the official Puzzle Fighter thread but it has not here so let it be mentioned that the Capcom blog has a preview of their upcoming dashboard theme for said game.
