It's an excellent game but I assume most have already played it on DS.

Nobody wants unbalanced Madballs.
Playbrains, developer of the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade game Madballs in Babo Invasion, says that it will roll out tweaks and updates to the multiplayer game behind the scenes every time a player loads it. This will let the developer balance out the combat as much as it wants to. With any luck, this will keep the game fresh and encourage players to stick around.
Madballs is a 16-player arena shooter that features the classic foam balls in gross shapes that children of the 80s all probably remember. Only now, theyre rolling around with machine guns shooting each other.
Playbrains president and CEO Scott Simpson, speaking to Wired.com on Wednesday, said that everything in the game that is related to the different characters abilities in battle is stored in a small data file that the game loads each time it starts up. By using an Xbox Live feature called Title Managed Updates, the developer can make tweaks to this file and roll it out to players in the background, without asking them to download the customary title update.
What sort of things can the developers tweak? Simpson gave the example of one Madballs special ability, a healing bubble that can be tossed onto the battlefield. By making small changes to the file, the developers can change anything about the bubble: How far does it get thrown? How much health does it heal? How long does it remain on the battlefield? How long does it take the ability to recharge?
You also unlock new weapons and abilities by playing the game. If the developers decide that certain things take too long or too much effort to unlock, they can tweak that, too.
In this way, Playbrains hopes to keep the game from becoming stagnant. In multiplayer games, players often gravitate to the characters and weapons that are the most powerful, thus making matches endless repetitions of the same few moves. If, for example, players end up not using the healing bubble because it takes too long to recharge, Playbrains can make a small tweak and have it roll out whenever they like, without having to wait for Microsoft to certify the title update.
So whats the rationale for going to all this trouble? Simpson said that in part, its to keep players from getting too happy, dominating online matches with a few characters and keeping the rest of the charming Madball characters on the bench.
But in a broader sense, its to help Madballs stand out from the hundreds of other games on Xbox Live Arcade. Simpson seemed concerned that the companys hard work on the game would go to waste if players decided to mess around with the game for a week, then jump ship to the next big thing once they get bored.
To get this flexibility, this ability to change whatever they like whenever they like, Simpson said that Playbrains had to apply for a special exemption from Microsoft to use the Title Managed Updates feature in this way.
In fact, Microsoft granted Madballs several exceptions to the rules. Instead of a Madball, you can choose as your rolling death ball the head of an Avatar, which ordinarily arent allowed to be used in gun combat situations. (Or be decapitated, for that matter.)
Also, said Simpson, the game has an extensive trial mode youll be able to play the multiplayer for three sessions of up to 30 minutes each before you have to buy the full version.
What do you think? Is the idea of constantly tweaking multiplayer to balance out the game a good one, or will it be jarring to see the characters youve practiced with get nerfed?
Got the code around 11am, points went through and now i'm ready to spend, spend, spend!DCX said:I just did the same...crossing my fingers

Seriously, this summer is insane for XBLA. Rocket Riot dropped last week, Worms 2 is next week, with BF1943 not far behind. Then we're getting Madballs, Shadow Complex, Splosion Man, Serious Sam, and Trials HD.

So what Arcade games aren't dead online?Sectus said:If you're getting it for multiplayer, don't bother. No one is playing anymore. On the other hand, it is a good version of chess with a neat "dark chess" variant and fun minigames. But I dunno if it can really be recommended with the multiplayer being dead.
From what I recall, these are the XBLA games I've played recently (days or weeks ago) which still had players online:radjago said:So what Arcade games aren't dead online?
The solution is to let demo players have the full online version of the game on a limited time basis. The churn will keep the community solvent. I think Madballs is doing this.Sectus said:From what I recall, these are the XBLA games I've played recently (days or weeks ago) which still had players online:
Worms
Bomberman Live
UNO
Texas Hold'em
Aegis Wing
Besides that, I don't know of any games. I really wish it was easy to find players in a game like Death Tank, but unfortunately I can't find anyone. It doesn't help that most XBLA games still have that stupid player/ranked split which makes it even harder to find players.

Rocket Riot is still doing okay, but it's a new title. I'm hoping join-in-progress and host migration will lengthen its online lifespan.radjago said:So what Arcade games aren't dead online?

Peggle! Play it online all the time, mainly just the Ranked Peg Party mode. There's dudes playing all modes though, very popular online.radjago said:So what Arcade games aren't dead online?
