Couldn't help but notice there are no recommendations for Puzzle Quest, I thought it was quite good. What's the GAF hivemind opinion on it?

It's an excellent game but I assume most have already played it on DS.

If collective GAF is like me, it is still irritated by the price hike on the sequel, but yeah, the original is a good deal, especially now that it is down to 800 points. The "storyline" is so blah that it isn't even interesting in a bad way, but the combat is fun.

Those "Paypal" links leads to plimus site instead of the paypal. Looks fishy to me.
And try googling for "Plimus scam". you'll find some interesting stuff to read.

I agree, I bought it for 800 points and thought it was great value. I never bought the additional DLC though, is it worth it?

On a different note, I started playing Geometry Wars 2 again recently and am having great fun with it. I also finally managed to break the 10 million barrier in Waves and the 200 million barrier in Pacifism, my two favourite game modes.

Well worth the points as well. I thumb-up the game (in spite of some bugs).

Madballs Dev: We’ll Tweak Game Balance In Real Time

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/06/madballs/

Nobody wants unbalanced Madballs.

Playbrains, developer of the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade game Madballs in Babo Invasion, says that it will roll out tweaks and updates to the multiplayer game behind the scenes every time a player loads it. This will let the developer balance out the combat as much as it wants to. With any luck, this will keep the game fresh and encourage players to stick around.

Madballs is a 16-player arena shooter that features the classic foam balls in gross shapes that children of the 80’s all probably remember. Only now, they’re rolling around with machine guns shooting each other.

Playbrains president and CEO Scott Simpson, speaking to Wired.com on Wednesday, said that everything in the game that is related to the different characters’ abilities in battle is stored in a small data file that the game loads each time it starts up. By using an Xbox Live feature called “Title Managed Updates,” the developer can make tweaks to this file and roll it out to players in the background, without asking them to download the customary title update.

What sort of things can the developers tweak? Simpson gave the example of one Madball’s special ability, a “healing bubble” that can be tossed onto the battlefield. By making small changes to the file, the developers can change anything about the bubble: How far does it get thrown? How much health does it heal? How long does it remain on the battlefield? How long does it take the ability to recharge?

You also unlock new weapons and abilities by playing the game. If the developers decide that certain things take too long or too much effort to unlock, they can tweak that, too.

In this way, Playbrains hopes to keep the game from becoming stagnant. In multiplayer games, players often gravitate to the characters and weapons that are the most powerful, thus making matches endless repetitions of the same few moves. If, for example, players end up not using the “healing bubble” because it takes too long to recharge, Playbrains can make a small tweak and have it roll out whenever they like, without having to wait for Microsoft to certify the title update.

So what’s the rationale for going to all this trouble? Simpson said that in part, it’s to keep players from getting “too happy,” dominating online matches with a few characters and keeping the rest of the charming Madball characters on the bench.

But in a broader sense, it’s to help Madballs stand out from the hundreds of other games on Xbox Live Arcade. Simpson seemed concerned that the company’s hard work on the game would go to waste if players decided to mess around with the game for a week, then jump ship to the next big thing once they get bored.

To get this flexibility, this ability to change whatever they like whenever they like, Simpson said that Playbrains had to apply for a special exemption from Microsoft to use the Title Managed Updates feature in this way.

In fact, Microsoft granted Madballs several exceptions to the rules. Instead of a Madball, you can choose as your rolling death ball the head of an Avatar, which ordinarily aren’t allowed to be used in gun combat situations. (Or be decapitated, for that matter.)

Also, said Simpson, the game has an extensive trial mode — you’ll be able to play the multiplayer for three sessions of up to 30 minutes each before you have to buy the full version.

What do you think? Is the idea of constantly tweaking multiplayer to balance out the game a good one, or will it be jarring to see the characters you’ve practiced with get nerfed?

Islands of Wakfu

I don't know about other countries but this is big in France among kids.

What is that Community game where you find buried treasure or something... collect treasures or items... kind of RPGish I think... people were talking about it on here, and they liked it. Can't remember the name.

Well, it's either that or sucking dicks behind the Olive Garden.

Seriously, this summer is insane for XBLA. Rocket Riot dropped last week, Worms 2 is next week, with BF1943 not far behind. Then we're getting Madballs, Shadow Complex, Splosion Man, Serious Sam, and Trials HD.

KoF98 and MvsC2 too. Monkey Island soon as well.

I need points for Kodu anyway.

German ? Here is the name of the guy you'd send money to : Yang JiangQiao.

Chinese people not allowed to live in Germany confirmed. I have a Chinese name and I live in the Netherlands. Shocking, I know.

I've been hooked (HA!) on Feeding Frenzy 2 the last couple days. I'm enjoying it a lot. Graphics are like twice as good as the first game... and it is so crisp and clean looking in HD. Very cute game.

If you're getting it for multiplayer, don't bother. No one is playing anymore. On the other hand, it is a good version of chess with a neat "dark chess" variant and fun minigames. But I dunno if it can really be recommended with the multiplayer being dead.
So what Arcade games aren't dead online?

From what I recall, these are the XBLA games I've played recently (days or weeks ago) which still had players online:
Worms
Bomberman Live
UNO
Texas Hold'em
Aegis Wing

Besides that, I don't know of any games. I really wish it was easy to find players in a game like Death Tank, but unfortunately I can't find anyone. It doesn't help that most XBLA games still have that stupid player/ranked split which makes it even harder to find players.

The solution is to let demo players have the full online version of the game on a limited time basis. The churn will keep the community solvent. I think Madballs is doing this.

Death Tank also does this and you can get plenty of people online.

Age Of Booty still goes quite well too.

Age of Booty (which I still play with friends) does this too.

Edit: doh, beaten. that'll teach me to reply before clicking the last page of the thread. :(

Rocket Riot is still doing okay, but it's a new title. I'm hoping join-in-progress and host migration will lengthen its online lifespan.

STHD still has a full screen of players at peak times.

Bomberman, Worms, Castle Crashers, Rocket Riot, Street Fighter, and N+ are the only arcade games I've ever been able to find matches for online. All others seem effectively dead.

Summer will be hot, though I wonder how they choose their games for "Summer of Arcade" since all the games around this period are interesting.

Actually, listening to the Major Nelson Podcast:

"The next week arcade titles which will hit July 1st, brand new month "e", King Of Fighters Ultimate Match 98 and then of course Worms 2 Armageddon which you just heard a few minutes ago, so that's kind of cool."

Of course, he HAS been wrong before :)

Someone told me MvC 2 has been delayed to the end of July? D:
DATELINE: NEARLY A MONTH AGO DURING E3

MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES SUMMER OF ARCADE LINEUP, WHICH BEGINS ON JULY 22ND. MVC2 IS PART OF THIS LINEUP.

PEOPLE OF LOGIC DISCERN THAT JULY 22ND IS THE EARLIEST DATE IT WILL BE RELEASED.

AGAINST ALL RATIONAL THOUGHT, SOME MORONS PERSIST IN PERPETUATING ODD CONTRARIAN BELIEF THAT IT IS COMING EARLIER.

OH MY!
