Has it occured to some folks that many or most of the people working at bigger developers might like to make small quirky shit as well, if they had an outlet to sell it within the reality of the market?

That's a great point. Many developers play it safe because they feel they need to in order to survive. With XBLA proving itself a viable outlet for unique and innovative ideas, I'm sure we'll eventually see new teams/divisions being formed at many developers specifically for that kind of content.

My problem is basically that a distribution channel that should be bubbling with creativity and ideas is producing maybe one original title a month, despite supposed "dozens" of applications a week. Meanwhile, about a third of the current Arcade lineup is composed of rehashed arcade games from the 80's.

Even MS was caught off guard by the tremendous response to XBLA. 360 is still less than a year old, and I don't think anyone wants them to resort to just flooding the Marketplace with quick-and-dirty garage games for the sake of having more games to list. Besides, many people are really eating up the classic arcade games, and for a feature that's still in its infancy, a 2:3 ratio for new, unique IP is really not bad at all.

I think people should stop pretending that 'indie devs' are better than professional devs. It's truely only once in a while that an indie dev comes out with an interesting concept. Sometimes you have some 'ok' titles, and the rest is complete pure trash.

They may not be 'better' developers, but at least they aren't largely confined to sequels and proven genres, as the marketing-suit-driven big guys are.

Sorry for the bump... I didn't know that we had already discussed that Texas Hold 'em was no longer free... everyone move along....

I cannot imagine it will be "perfect." Especially not if Frogger and Smash TV's ridiculous netcode can get past Microsoft approvals. :'(

Damnit, I guess Major Nelson was ****ing around with his RSS feed. This popped up but now it's gone:

Arcade: Street Fighter II
Xbox Live members can now download the highly anticipated Arcade title 'Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting' from the Marketplace. This arcade title is 800 points and is available in all Xbox Live regions except Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore or Taiwan. You can review a complete list of features for this game at Xbox.com.

Guess Japan isn't the only territory that's screwed on SFII.

Haha, what a tease, we still wait for it to pop up in the dead of night. Dawn Street Fighting ftw! Though I'm not gonna purchase till after I get some impressions.

800 points is how many dollars? And is there a 800 point block purchase, or am I stuck with like 1200, or something?

I think it'll be $10, which is $5 too much. Still, I'll probably end up getting it if the impressions are good enough.

800 points is $10, but I think that you have to buy points in increments of 500, so you'll need 1000 points ($12.50).

Never really got why they did it like that.

The same reason Gameworks wants to sell you point cards that end up giving you an uneven balance at the end -- so you'll buy more than you need and when you're left with a balance you can't use on anything you'll buy more instead of just throwing it away at the end of the night.

Clever marketing tactic that works quite well, I'm sure.

That's what I just assumed. Gamerpics and themes probably wouldn't sell as well if people didn't have left over points.

I don't really understand this concept of "left over points." It's not like the Points go away if you don't use them soon enough. I have 1200 points now and do not plan on just throwing them at lame pictures or an XBLA game I don't want so I can use them up. There will be plenty of stuff to download in the future. If nothing piques my interest until Castle Crashers, so be it.

You can always use those crappy left over points to purchase gamer pics, themes, etc if you're that desperate to get rid of them.

You're probably one of the few. Just like there are few people who pay off the whole balance on their credit card every month. Yeah it might be the "sensible" thing to do, but that's not what the majority does.

Would it shock you if I said that I've had a credit card for about a decade and have paid it off, in full, every month? :D

Hey, if I wasn't a cheap bastard I wouldn't be able to afford all the toys I want.

Here's to hoarding Marketplace Points!

I'm the same, but some people would rather save those dollars until they need them.

Doesn't shock me one bit with your frugal 'tude towards Microsoft Points. But then you aren't the customer that credit card companies and Microsoft like. Credit card debt is big, big business. And so is making you buy more points than you need. You better believe that Sony is going to have something exactly like Microsoft's points setup with their online marketplace (maybe Nintendo, too).

So true. So very, very true. Though I don't think they do that anymore; I bought hot dogs last week and it was 8/8.

Can't believe the "Summer of Arcade" is almost over. Let's hope they announce the next batch of weekly Arcade releases soon. :)

Am I the only person who buys enough points so its divisible by 400 points? No left over picture pack bullshit for me... though the Street Fighter II Pack I does have some nice pics... damn you MS!

The head guy for XBLA did an interview with Joystiq last week and stated that "very soon" they would announce the next batch of games. So hopefully by weeks end we'll know.

Here is the quote:

When can we expect an announcement about the next batch of games coming to XBLA?

In the next week or so we will make that announcement.

Most likely 4AM EST like the past three new games.

I really hope lumines is in that "next bunch"

It's basically done.

From the latest issue of OXM...

"Before Labor Day, four more Arcade games will come out- Texas Hold'em, Time Pilot, Scramble, and Lumines Live!"

Just got back from Best Buy with my 1600 points (they still have it for $19.99) so I'm officially ready for SFII and Pac-Man.

I consulted my magic 8-Ball this morning and it confirmed that SFII will become the best selling Arcade game by months end.

I cannot wait the bloody, murderous backlash after SFII's netcode still sucks.
Here's to hoping. If the netcode is good that means I need to buy it. If I need to buy it that means I need to get a stick. If I need to get a stick that means I'll have to get good at using the stick.

Plus I need to learn how to be good at SFII. Sure I'm a 3rd Strike addict, but I only played SFII as a kid, figuring combos by playing the computer. Now I gotta read up on it and learn some re-dizzy combos, being the cheap bastard I am.

ill be a new xbox 360 owner in a few days. do i have to be a live user to download arcade games (i don't really have any intention of playing games online.)

I will be downloading the demo tomorrow morning, but I'm not buying until I read some impressions of how well the online works. If I wanted to play SFII offline I'd hook up my SNES.

No. You'll need to create an account, but you don't need to be a paying Live member to access the marketplace.
