Let me see if I understand this. Microsoft admits that they have communication issues with its fanbase regarding XBLA. They make a big announcement saying how the gates have been opened and we will start getting good original games starting sometime in February. It is February 20th and we have gotten Rootbeer Tapper and Paperboy. To top it all off, an officially sanctioned Microsoft blog releases a smug video that is the equivalent of a huge kick in the balls to people who are waiting for certain games. Those douchebags on the video took the three games that the hardcore gamers are waiting for and taunted us with them.

I was at Walmart this week and I saw 5 Wiis in the display case. Between this crap and my previously broken Xbox 360 I am sorry I did not pick up one. Everyone here says that the Wii VC is a ROM dump. I'll take a ROM dump with games like Castlevania IV and Super Mario World any day of the week over this 2 month lineup of mindblowing titles any day of the week;

(nothing)
Ms.Pac Man
Lumines add on
(nothing)
Tapper
Paperboy
(nothing)

Microsoft has to realize that with similar services on the Wii and the PS3, they are now competing for gamer's dollars and they are doing nothing to help themselves. As a consumer, having a company's arrogant employees release a blog that mocks, taunts, and disappoints their hardcore fans has got to be one the most deplorable and stupidest things I have ever seen. I hope their new strategy works out for them...whatever the hell it may be.

Microsoft has to have a pulse on the general consensus about their service. Every blog, every news site, every messageboard overwhelmingly has NOTHING good to say about XBLA at all. That is pretty sad. It is sad because it is the same thing that people have been saying (vocally) for months. Judging by this video blog, it is now pretty obvious Microsoft does not really give a damn what people think or want.

Nice work.

You couldn't have said it any better.

That's not the reasoning at all, though. The game would have sold about 10x as much as Motorstorm in Japan. There seems to be a plan to shift to digital downloads for a lot of games on PSN. I just think Sony and MS have very different goals for PSN and XBLA so the comparisons are about as relevant as XBLA vs VC.

This is what I was trying to say, yes.

It's funny to go back and read the beginning of this thread which is full of optimisim and excitement and compare it to now, 16 months later, where the bitter reality has set in.

XBLA is a colossal bomb.

I think New Rally X was the straw that broke the XBLA back, the game that showed us the XBLA people didn't know what they were doing. A game where you're running around on a track collecting flags? How did a game with such crazy outdated gameplay get accepted and developed when everyone is clamoring for relatively new arcade releases and original games?

Thank you, I agree completely.

Here is a random sampling of what your fellow gamers are saying about XBLA. If you listen to MS they will have us believe that we are just the "hardcore" gamers that do not matter and they will marginalize us saying how everything is great with the majority of players. I happen to disagree. For every positive comment I see, I can get you 20 negative ones like the comments below.

Are the people who typed these comments across the internet wrong? If so, why is it that they feel this way? I think if you have so many consumers spewing this amount of consistant disdain for your service, I'd say you have a problem.

The Internets said:
-Oh where is the QUALITY like Root Beer Tapper this week?

-XBLA you suck

-MS shits the bed again! What a shock.

-Pathetic.

-Microsoft does seem like they are falling behind with their XBLA, especially considering all the games that come out for Virtual Console constantly. I already have a page full of VC games compared to maybe 5 XBLA titles. The fact that 360 owners are waiting on Alien Hominid when Wii and PS3 owners can play the game through backwards compatibility just adds insult to injury.

-Virtual Console Mondays > Inconsistent XBLA Wednesdays...

-Live Arcade was so cool when I first got the 360 and there were all these titles already available for trial... but the number of titles being released that aren't old arcade games (i.e. boring)is disappointing. I mean Castle Crasher is the only original XBLA game I think I'm looking forward to and I'm only interested in 2 or 3 others...

-I mean the Virtual Console seems to be gaining steam so Microsoft should pick up the pace.

-Am I really going to brag that I have leaderboards on Pac Man when Wii owners are playing Streets of Rage!?

-Nintendo gets my money again this week

-the video was a bit harsh to those who do look forward to new releases on Wednesday. Especially since the only people who are going to see that video are people checking gamerscoreblog.com looking for new XBLA content.

-The video just made the certification guys seem cocky.

-Utter rubbish. We're starved of full-price games to play - this is the time of year when Arcade should be making an absolute killing, and we're getting Paperboy? Paperboy was rubbish the day it was released and it's rubbish now.

-"keep your subscribers happy or call it quits!"No that's what microsoft are not doing.

-How bout you just make the midway collections backwards compatible? or does that not make MS collect enough money from dopes who buy a game they already had that doesnt have a true online mode anyway. I got smash TV, but that was because I could play it online with people and its alot of fun...Rootbeer tapper and paperboy I can get the same experience by myself on my regular xbox. Unless Super Offroad or Super Sprint aint coming to the XBLA, count me out.

I myself want to just grab my 360 and ram it down the throat of the commercial, cash-guzzling, big-wigs who keep force-feeding me these re-hashed games at a disgustingly over-inflated price. Yes - I have a choice, and yes I don't have to buy them - but I'm a gamer-score whore, and if I don't get my 200 points on XBLA games I cry.

-sounds like its not just us who are sick of this crap. how did scramble sell anyway?

-I played this on the C64 as a kid but I cant help but feel that 50 megabytes for a 256KB arcade ROM was a waste of my time and bandwidth.

-I can think of tens of 1980's games I'd rather play, like ghosts n goblins or bubble bobble.

-It strikes me as a bit rich to keep calling these old games 'HD', when the only HD elements are a border around the game and the front end menu.

-another crap release, another reason still not to plug my ethernet cable into the back of my Xbox.

The sheer amount of unadulterated suck that is XBLA can neither be overstated nor stated enough times.

Here is my last question of the night (before I go to pick up Crackdown).

WHY THE **** ARE THE DOOM LEADERBOARDS STILL ****ED UP? Why is it that I am LAST on my friends list when I have the most points? Why IS the dude who played this game once #1 on my list? FIX THIS SHIT!

I'm not trying to make excuses for them, they are definitely dropping the ball...but I think there's reasons that XBLA games take longer for certification:

1) The TCRs for XBLA games are very strict. Basically this means that they are trying extra hard to make sure that publishers don't try to give them crap in name of cheap games (aka shovelware), and they also probably enforce there be things like good network code and working co-op play, which are both difficult to test.
2) Companies are probably devoting smaller teams to XBLA efforts, so the turnaround to respond to Microsoft's punting the game back saying "this still sucks" is probably slower than gamers would like.

I think Microsoft saying "This sucks" is fine, I mean, Street Fighter 2 was pushed back for lack of good network code several times and it still was patched post release. That is not at all Microsoft's fault. However, having a pipeline of "backup" games is sort of something they obviously need to work on, as the video shows they seem to have this idea but it's not working out

(Worms, Castlevania, and Alien Hominid are obviously all close to release though, which are all three games worth buying)

XBLA hasn't been complete shit. we have gotten classics such as hexic, geometry wars, and heavy weapon. then there are some pretty fun "party" games like uno and texas hold 'em. the problem is the release schedule. where is castle crashers? where is sotn? where is alien hominid? why does this shit take forever?

i know all of those questions have already been asked but the only answer that ever comes with it is "it take work boy! not easy like a rom dump!" well ****ing maybe MS needs to devote a "rom-only" section to XBLA so we can have SOMETHING to play while they are playing grab ass deciding when to get the killer app stuff out.

I just completed the game, every single level but for some reason it failed to record my scores for the majority of the levels.

And I tried playing it again yesterday and I had to download a patch. Wonder what it's for? Pretty unusual to get patches for a XBLA game

Man, that dude has a total logical disconnect. Hopefully there are not to many of his kind propogating the status quo.

Hahaha, that video is awesomely horrible.

MS has had nearly 18 months to fix things and have not. Don't expect changes any time soon. Only disappointment.

It really can both be overstated and stated enough times. I understand a weekly rant each time the Live Arcade team personally comes to each one of your homes and rapes you withen an inch of your life. But to say the same thing over and over again over the course of the same day by the same posters is just kind of creepy.

I think it just well displays the overall displeasure of 360 owners towards a service they really, really want to like. There are people in here literally begging to spend money on Live arcade games, and they are getting tired of unfulfilled promises/potential.

I'm getting sick of it as well, and it's one of my favorite features of the system.

I think it is good that people complain, it can only help the service. It is taking them way to long to get things running smoothly over there, and the development time on some of these ports is just kind of mindblowing.

The talking point about MAC not being BC due to some shadow conspiracy has *got* to ****ing stop.

As for this video...I guess they were trying to be funny? I dunno, I wouldn't mind Chris coming into this thread and explaining how he thought that was a good idea at all. It's bad enough to have no new release, but that video really rubbed the salt in.

Arne shouldn't have to deal with the bullshit this video has stirred up. If I was him, I'd call in sick or just ignore the boards or something. People are pissed about this one.

Kind of unrelated, but I'm kind of upset that MS would announce Geometry Wars for the PC and then not deliver. There isn't even a release date.

The only silver-lining I can find in that video is that at least Microsoft is aware of the content we actually want. Deep down I'm still in denial that they were bastards enough to make the video in the first place. All is forgiven if this was all a ruse to mess with our expectations and they will simultaneously release Worms, Sotn, and AH tomorrow.
Not Happening

It's not like I have a hard on for this crap. I WANT to like XBLA and I think it has a ton of potential but I'm seeing that potential go to waste every freakin' week and it's extremely frustrating. We're almost a year and a half into the system's life and we're still seeing this shit. And take a look at that video! MS staff reads GAF and I want them to know that this doesn't fly. I won't put my head down and make some quip about how I'm looking forward to their next piece of 1981 arcade shovelware. This shit angers me and I hope it angers you too. I'm not going to push over a magazine rack but I will complain (incessantly) much to the chagrin of some around here that are seemingly too willing to make excuses for this garbage.

I think we all want to like/love XBLA. We're customers with cash in hand screaming "give me good games and we'll pay you!", and we've been doing that for coming up on a year and a half now. I've gone pretty easy on XBLA because the games I have picked up were amazing, and MS is trying to figure out a new space for games with the service. But even I have my breaking point, and the sad list of releases above is pretty much it. **** the QUALITY of the releases at this piont. Some CONTENT would be nice this year.

The gamerscore blog thing was actually pretty funny. What are you people bitching about? Play SOTN on PSX, play Worms on the PC, play Alien Hominid on the web (it was a flash game, right?), play any of the existing Xbox 360, PS3, Ps2, Gamecube, Wii, etc. games out there. If you don't like XBLA then play the Wii's VC or the PS3's PSN. (The real way to get MS to do better is to spend money on their competitors) Get a new hobby. If the fact that a $10 game isn't being released this week is really taking up a lot of your time and energy then you might want to re-evaluate some things. The primary audience of XBLA is casuals anyway, who don't spend their time arguing about sales numbers on the internet and don't complain incessantly when they have to wait another 7 days for a game release. So just LIGHTEN UP!

Being smug or insensitive is not what we were intending to do with the video. It also wasn't trying to rub salt in any one's wounds. I want Worms, Castlevania and (my personal favorite) Settlers of Catan just as badly as everyone else wants them.

We have the unfortunate job of breaking the bad news that there would be no XBLA title this coming Wednesday. Rather than simply post "No title this week - sorry" and getting hate-mail and negative comments, we tried to poke fun at ourselves and let the community know that we hear the things folks are pissed about (namely retro titles, and weeks with no game releases).

The video was to be accompanied by a post explaining the fact that there wouldn't be a release this week, and setting the stage for the video's poking-fun at ourselves. The post (and the video) weren't ready to be published yet, but they got out there in the wild.

I wanted to jump in here and clarify. Hopefully it helped a little.

Glad you did. I can see the intentions, but man-oh-man is this backfiring, and the day is young.

I just want my Settlers, Chris. Help a man out. ; ;

Here is how I see the whole thing going down, and why these delays maybe do not bug me as much as they do some people.

I think Live Arcade was kind of a tacked on service to begin with, which was probably championed by a very small group of people on the 360 team. I think they planned it to be very simplistic, old school arcade ports with a few pc ports and that was pretty much it. It was also probably an extremely small team working on it.

It was only months later that they realized the potential of the service and I just think it is taking them a long time to get the infrastructure built to support a much more massive experience that was not originally envisioned. So they have a bunch of near complete games, but not the resources yet to push them through. I think it will start happening soon though. I am very excited about the list of announced games, and someday we will be playing them. If a couple of months from now, they are still dicking around that is about the time I will start worrying that Microsoft just really is not all that interested in devoting the time and money the service needs to thrive.

How about telling us earlier in advance and maybe giving us an explanation why there won't be a game this week? I mean does the group have only one title that they work on and if something goes wrong, the release that week is screwed? We know that you guys have communication troubles within the organization but now it's extended to the consumers and when word gets out from angry consumers, you know what happens.

So they thought this was a better way to relay the information to the consumers?

I'm done with this nonsense. It really is not worth bothering with XBLA and all of the bitching at this point anymore.

XBLA is a letdown over and over and over again. It has not been anything worth getting excited about for 18 months and I doubt that is going to change. I am going to speak with my wallet on this one. I seriously hope that anyone else ticked off in this thread will do the same and not reward companies for promising the world and putting out absolute garbage.

Seriously, don't sweat it. The legions of sexless freaks on message boards calling for your head just like being dramatic. There are plenty of people who love XBLA and we are all looking forward to the next few weeks. Should be good.

Take care man.

I don't think so. Live Arcade existed on the first Xbox for a while. They knew the potential way before 360 came out. That's why there were so many games at launch. Sadly, third parties did NOT know the potential, and that's why we're having to wait. It's the third parties that don't have the infrastructure ready, not MS. As others have suggested, it's likely companies have really small teams for XBLA games and the feedback MS gives them takes a long time to be implemented.

That still doesn't explain why the **** we haven't got Lumines, UMK3, SF2, Tapper, and so on, in Japan yet. I'm assuming licensing issues for Lumines and ratings issues for UMK3, but wtf is up with the others?

Sorry, they're putting out ABSOLTELY NOTHING, not garbage.

And Heavy Weapon certainly wasn't garbage.

I think everyone needs to stop throwing their toys out the pram. Yes, it sucks. And MS can't use the excuse "we didn't realise how successful it was" and re games coming out "talk to the publishers, it's up to them" because it's also up to the publishers what RETAIL games come out and it's up to MS to incentivise them to make specific games for their platform to help them compete against Sony and Nintendo.

But the fact is, that you guys are all way to impatient. There's a ton of great retail games out there, no doubt you've still got stuff to complete. So why are you all getting so damn impatient about some XBLA games when it seems you spend more time on here bitching about them than you do playing them anyway.

/ends rant

EDIT: It wouldn't be so bad if you guys were moaning because SOTN or Alien Hominid aren't out this week, but you're moaning because 'nothing' is coming out. If SOMETHING had of come out, it could have been something you didn't have any interest in anyway. Like Gyruss etc. Everyone moans when something does come out. Everyone moans when nothing comes out.

TOPIC CHANGE!

For those of you who picked up the Lumines packs, worth it or very worth it? I hardly play my 360 anymore, but was wondering if it's worth grabbing em now when I've got points laying about (AND NOTHING TO USE THEM ON, HUR HUR HUR) and they are cheap.

No one would compalin about New Rally X if it had a friend or two to hold its hand rather than it being the sole release for a week. It saddens me to thing that we may only see another 25 to 30 games released this year on XBLA because it means that titles that I'm hoping for may never appear at this rate.
