Official Xbox Live Arcade Thread

Y mode was kind of fun, and how I played X' when I didn't know what I was doing. Z is just plain garbage. They need to make a patch to make you switch 2 instead of 4. It just isn't fun.

Apologies if it has already been mentioned in the thread, but when did Geometry Wars Evolved change it's name to Geometry Wars - you can even see it say Evolved for a split second as it scans for arcade games, before it is overwritten with the new name.

Do you think, perchance, it may serve as a single launch icon for future expansions, such as Geometry Wars Waves, etc?

Am I the only who actually likes Centipede & Millipede? Even the Evolved versions of it?

No, you aren't. 170/200 for now IIRC, including both of the Throttle Monkey variants. Still haven't gone for 125,000 Millipede and clear all shrooms Millipede and something else.

:O :O :O

Probably played it on the 1up system? :P

Yeah, that's most likely. What I really wanted to check was the 10 million points in the Tutorial Achievement. If someone has that, you know the game clicked with them and that they understand the depth of the game's mechanics.

BUT, I think I jumped to conclusions. I re-read it and took that one statement too literally and misinterpreted it. I now realize the crux of his argument is the fact that it was hard for him to discern what was what. He claims that this is always the case, and I disagree with that. He thinks it hurts the gameplay. I think it helps because in the levels where it is hard to discern stuff, it adds an element of challenge.

I have to completely agree on the point he made about the enemies being largely the same colour as the rest of the playfield. The green and red streamers that come down to warn you as far as enemy placement goes, are extremely clear and easy to see. That same sort of saturated colour could have been used on enemies and their shots.

So my disagreement is based on what degree these sorts of visuals hinder the gameplay. Which would end up being a futile argument, he thinks it totally kills the gameplay (on all levels), and I think it adds challenge (and that it isn't so hard to discern stuff on the majority of levels). What I don't think is arguable is the depth as far as gameplay is concerned. I misinterpreted his one statement as a slag on what the game offered as far as gameplay is concerned, and I think any reviewer attempting to argue that simply hasn't played the game to the extent they should have, to review it.

He posts on this forum. If you complain loud enough maybe he'll reply

Like I said, I misinterpreted that one statement. Taken in the context of the article, he has beef with the visuals interfering with his ability to play the game. While I (and many others) have no problem, it's hard to make an argument since he is right about the enemies being the same colours as pretty much everything else.

I think the challenge in games should come from making decisions and/or controller dexterity, not from trying to distinguish screen elements (this game) or master a poorly designed control scheme (Lair).

Just because something adds challenge doesn't make it a good addition, especially for people who play games for entertainment more than accomplishment.

any chance to have rare n64 games?

I read this, and I was wondering why not in XBLA :S

Rare Confirms Banjo possibility for the Virtual Console

Banjo Kazooie on the VC one day?

Banjo Kazooie on the VC one day?
Some interesting news for those who fear that some of the jewels in the N64 crown may never get released on the VC. Our friends at RareWare have now stated "it's ultimately Nintendo's decision what gets released" on their own official website.

It would appear from this statement that Nintendo does indeed own the publishing rights to the Rare games published on the Nintendo 64 so we might eventually start to see Banjo and gang on the VC.

In direct response to a question about Banjo Kazooie coming to the VC the reply was given "Banjo team: Maybe, but not up to us". In addition to this in an example of l33t spk from people who really should know better Rare said: "Beyond the DKC games we don't have anything in the pipeline at the moment, but that doesn't mean it won't happen in future. OMG CORPERATE ANSER#!1".

Perhaps for the first time we now have a glimmer of hope that the Banjo games and ultimately maybe all the classic Rare games may one day be available for download in the Wii Shop. Let's hope so anyway!

What the fuck!

Hopefully, Minter & co are doing that because they realized how dumb it is to have the "super ox" and "space" (normal) modes share a leaderboard since they yield insanely different scores. It's no fun having an awesome space score, only to be crushed to pieces by players in super ox. :(

This is also good because a buddy of mine bet me I couldn't get the #1 spot in the game. I'm gonna be on that leaderboard reset like a hawk. :D

By the way, I'm the proud first owner -- who isn't Jeff Minter or a script kiddie hacker -- of the Long-Neck Long March achievement. :D

Oh, so you are Sufoor?

There are actually 3 more people besides Minter to have the LNLM achievement now. I went for my first play through from level 1 last night, after having completed level 100 a few nights before. I surprised myself and got to level 77 my first go. So I now no longer think that achievement out of reach. A few more marathons and I might be able to do it too.

The trouble is finding the time. As it is, I went to bed at 1am last night, only to get up 5 hours later to go to the gym, then work. Needless to say, I'm falling asleep right about now.

you know, people who keep clamoring for banjo wii ports might be barking up a stupid tree. Why would nintendo want to basically get people to DL a game that they cant get the sequel to? Its like saying hey buy a 360 now.

At least so far its been portable games which is different.

Where the hell is Castle Crushers?

Ahy the hell does nobody play old XBLA games I want to play anymore? Where are all the SF2 and Texas Hold 'Em players?

Review Round-Up: 1up.com on Space Giraffe (Average)

Not a bad review actually. At least he's not like most and automatically canned the game for being difficult to grasp.

Sure, he complains that it's hard to see what's going on a bit. That's understandable. Even though once you really get into the game you realise that listening for sound effects is about 30% of the game. There's a reason the sound effects are jarring and obvious. Because you need to hear them, they are what you rely on when your eyes can't give you all the information you need. It's what makes the game so great.

But over all, not a bad review of the game at all.

Fatal Fury ain't bad - not played it before and the graphics hold up well for a '93 game, especially the background environments, and the music too. Probably because it's NeoGeo!

Cyberball is a joke and an insult to XBLA. Get that shit off there stat!

Not really. I just think they realized that the Evolved wasn't really necessary as most people hadn't heard of GW when it was a PGR pack-in. Less catchy with a longer name and all that.

Hopefully, they realized that the game sucks and cancelled it.

It looks great, doesn't it? Too bad it actually plays the exact opposite. Disappointment total.

I disagree. Pretty much the only enemies that get lost in the mix are the feedbackers (the rainbow-y little "sparks" that can jump off the rim and fire backwards, and also distort the screen if you shoot them). If you're running into shots -- which are easily missable -- you're not paying attention and playing carefully enough. That's a mistake all of us, including myself, did at first I think -- ran across the rim like we were on fire. To succeed in SG, one needs to make small careful movements and make sure to keep track of the playfield as much as possible (so as to know when a bull run can be done).

The visibility is incredibly low at first, but as much of a doubter as I've been for a while, I have to say Minter was right in the end. You do learn to see pretty much everything in the chaos. Like how I used to fucking despire those ball enemies that shoot shots that can travel along the rim -- I used to think that was the most unfair thing ever, then I realized that I had subconsciously learned to keep track of ball enemies general directions to see if a shot was coming at me, and that aimed hoofshots can take them out.

Point is that there's an incredible amount of depth in the game and it takes time to learn countermeasures and to even see through the thick graphical wall that stands between you and a high score, but once you do, it's all good. (With that said, there are things that truly do need criticizing that no reviewer, so far, has even seen.)

Oh, hell no! He's the kid using hacks -- note how he even has 200 in Smash TV. He also had 200 in Hold 'Em before that was possible.

And I literally beat Kelora to the punch by mere hours. It was a good fight.

Thanks. I understand the game better now. I still need the quarter miser achievement, so will using Donovan on X mode help steer the odds in my favor?

Still, any help on the "break a gem larger than 25" achievement?

Last two achievements for me are the 7-chain and the Y/Z one. Haven't really sought out either, though. I'm sure I'll eventually get the 7 just through normal play, but I don't know if I can stomach Y or Z mode long enough to get that one.
The Y/Z one wasn't that bad, really. I was able to beat Y mode on hard in about a half-hour.

That OXM review really, really got to Minter.

http://www.xblarcade.com/node/1112
Minter's being a pretty big asshat about this game. Every time someone brings up a bug on his own forums, he completely disregards it and says it can't be possible. He dismissed the friends leaderboard glitch when it was first brought up as impossible as the game had passed cert, but now I believe he knows it exists. He acts like that every time someone brings up a glitch. Kinda ruins the image of him as a cool dude. :(

That shirt is pretty hilarious! I kind of want to order one based on the description alone:

Show your support for OXM Dan and your contempt for Space Giraffe with this lovely Space Giraffe Is Rubbish shirt!

Agreed.

Seriously, Cyberball with no competitive play? Who the hell thought that was a good idea?
